That is indeed good news. It does suck however that it's only available for the US market to purchase, as digital downloads. Hopefully we'll get a Bluray or physical release as well as digital for the International market.
You know a show is one of the greats when you love it more at 45 than you did at 20. It's a show that stands the test of time. It's just a damn shame that so many people from this show are gone. I didn't realize until very recently that Jerry Doyle and Stephen Furst had died in addition to all of the others.
Clark thought Sheridan was a staunch Loyalist. He was right. Unfortunately, Sheridan wasn't loyal to Clark, he was loyal to the Constitution that Clark was violating.
In the aftermath of the Trump regime, we're discovering that bureaucrats and career military generals, grey men with uninteresting jobs, quietly worked behind the scenes to prevent a coup which could have overthrown the world's oldest democracy. Babylon 5 was very good about showing the ugly reality of both war and politics, and how destiny often balances on the actions of ordinary men and women who are willing to put principle ahead of ambition.
James: Forward guns are down, we can't fire! Worf, watching show at home: Say it. James: Particle beams coming online for the nearest platform, ready to fire! Worf: SAY IT. Shreidan: Target? James: North America. It'll wipe out most of the eastern seaboard. John, there's no one else close enough to stop it. Worf: SAY IT! Sheridan: All power to engines. Give me RAMMING SPEED. Worf: *single tear*
I wonder just how many times Worf, has watched the *last FIFTEEN MINUTES of "Animal House!"?* ( *"D-Day: driving the Death Mobile as it's headed for the reviewing stand!"* ) *"RAMMING SPEEEED!"*
I'm so glad to find these videos and to see all the comments. I missed it when it came out and only discovered it a few years ago, and to see that its community is still remembering and cherishing the show is just wonderful. Thank you so much for this video, for giving fans a place to gather and talk about their favorite scenes. It's the best scifi series (and one of the very best series period) I've ever seen. I couldn't believe how quickly it shot past all my other favorites and took first place. Just an amazing, unforgettable journey to take with remarkable characters.
@@nuanil It is more sad but I think for the best. With Principles passed on, for example, NO ONE can replace Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulan (G'Khar), Tim Choate (Zathras) and a host of others, there is no way today's Hollywood can recreate B5 in any way or form and ruining it with "woke". Many say the acting was "bad" overall throughout the series. I beg to differ. Compared to today's BS ham jobs, these guys were A listers who carried their characters, gave these characters life and then some.
In terms of realism this show was unmatched until the expanse. If ever there was a show that deserved a remake of it's still glorious CGI, it was this show.
I wouldn't be so sure, since the reimagined Battlestar Galactica also tried very hard to implement things like Newtonian physics, and went a step further by avoiding weird pseudoscientific directed energy weapons. The Expanse handily stomps them both flat by comparison, though.
@@lylejames965 Nah, I think it could do with a remake. The story was almost bar none with its foreshadowing..shadowing..shadows...anyhoo... As long as JMS is behind it (which it would be because he has full control of the property) I have no doubt it would turn out amazing.
@@ML-yn9yu I would've loved to see the story play out as it was intended. The network cancelled the last season so they had to cram all their plot into the penultimate season. Then the network decided they wanted that last season after all. As you said, the plot was well planned out far in advance and I'd like to have seen it without that meddling.
"This is not the voice of treason. These are your sons, your daughters, whose loyalties have never wavered, whose beliefs in this alliance has forced us to take extraordinary means. For justice, for peace, for the future . . . we have come home."
@@davidcurr6221 bruh, the first presidential election race he ran in didn't even happen when the comment was made. I haven't watched all of Babylon 5 (for shame, especially as the close family friends who love it so much who I grew up with, have all of it on DVD), but I'm fairly sure that seems like a quote from a character in the show, regarding the war.
3:20 is a wonderfully human touch. You can see a fleeting moment of hesitation from the XO has he processes what Sherriden is asking from him, the ship and it's crew, and then his professionalism kicks in. Without hesitation he confirms the order, knowing full well what it entails. Babylon 5 always managed to humanize the cost of war in those small moments.
Matt they both realized what had to be done, tho they knew that the aggie and crew would likely die (or at least a large section at least) it's something that people that have taken the oath understand,
The Earthforce ships, particularly this class, are some of the coolest designs ever seen on a screen, up there with imperial star destroyers and the mercury and Jupiter class battlestars. Such a badass name too.
Ever look into the battle between the British destroyer HMS Glowworm and the German cruiser Admiral Hipper? When all seemed lost, the captain of the Glowworm (terrifying name, right?) rammed the German cruiser, sinking his ship and doing minor damage to the Hipper... Whose captain got a letter through to the Admiralty in London describing the gallant battle Glowworm put up and recommended that his British counterpart receive the Victoria Cross for his courage, a request the Admiralty saw was fulfilled... Lt. Commander Gerard Broadmead Roope, VC (posthumously)
I never realised it before but Sinclairs last act in the Earth-Mimbari war was to attempt to ram the Mimbari grey councils ship and end the war only to be saved by Delenn and Sheredins last act of the Shadow War was to ram a weapons platform to save millions of lives. Very nice detail.
I don't think the starfury would have done a lot of damage to the Gray council ship, more so "I won't die without taking out someone" Not that I am underrating the scene, still a great section of the battle
I'll see your 25 and raise you another 25! Part of the reason B5 stands so far and above nearly every other show is 1- consistently portrayed characters. They don't pick up the idiot ball for the week's plot episode. 2- they were meant to be more 'modern' characters who were flawed rather than idealized future/romanticized past characters.
It has competition. Severed Dreams comes to mind, of course, but for the life of me, it will always be one moment from Babylon 5. "Why? Why all of this? Pride? Duty? You've been trained well, but you must have known you couldn't win. So why do it?" "For her. We live for the one. We die for the one."
I think what is so telling here is the level of commitment we see from the crews of the ships around Sheridan. We know that in many battles the forces fighting for Clark did so largely only from fear. That when put into a pinched position they would surrender, sometimes without even firing a shot. Many of the crews arrested their own Captains rather than carry on. Yet here in this fight we see the Earth Force loyalists led by Sheridan simply throwing themselves on the defenses. Pilots flying into the paths of missiles to screen the capital ships, the capital ship charging forwards to engage the platforms. When faced with a death or glory moment, Captain Hall's crew surrendered in seconds. When the crew of the Agamemnon was put in the same situation, there was a grime acceptance followed by a rapid response to carry out the order. A great arc of examples that shows the difference between those fighting for their own gains vs those fighting to save others.
Not out of fear but out of loyalty to the idea of the nation they were fighting for you don’t step foot in a space ship if fear is in your vocabulary this isn’t a plain or a boat one wrong move and your dead what your seeing are people forced to fight and people choosing to
I'm man enough to admit that B5 made me tear up more than a few times...thoughtful writing, solid acting, and the music was perfect. They also knew how to shut up and have some great moments, and not ruin it with filler dialogue.
More the cosmic radiation protection any ship in Babylon 5 must have, as they have neither deflectors or shields in that universe. The danger from the platform for the ship was mostly scrapnels and high radiation. We always forget when we see space scenes (and also often the producers forget it, gladly not JMS) that space is a vacuum. The heat of the explosion is not a danger for a ship.
I think my favorite Delenn moment was her arrival in "Severed Dreams" making the comanders of the enemy EA ships likely crap their underoos LOL! "If you value your lives...be somewhere else!"...*on EA ships*...."retreating to jumpgate sir"...."NO! No need....fire up the jump engines....we're making our OWN jump points!"
Although to be clear: It was secure. That's vacuum of space. Delenn was just shocked, because she thought that the Agamemnon had ramped the platform and was exploding too. But at the moment when the Agamemnon passed the turret platform, the platform was already gone. And the shielding against cosmic radiation, especially during Hyperspace, is big enough to avoid anything from the exploding platform to hurt the Agamemnon, like scrapnells.
This is *true* heroism. A hero is someone who sees something that needs to be done and does it because to do anything else is totally unthinkable. Either that or someone who is just so cold/tired/hungry that they just don't give a damn anymore. For Sheridan not to give that order would be totally unthinkable to him.
A Vietnam vet friend said to me once, "sometimes valor is just another word for too damn tired to care." He was awarded a Bronze star with V for that too damn tired moment.
"Courage isn't just a matter of not being frightened, you know. It's being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway." --The Doctor, Planet of the Daleks
"How do you know a hero? It is one who would lay down his life for another. Alone. In the dark. Where nobody could hear it. Not for glory. Not for fame. But for love of another fellow being." -The Inquisitor
As Captain of the ship, to give the order to ram knowing what it meant is heroic. But the ships crew have to comply to that order equally knowing the cost. So the Captain cannot bear that accolade alone. But the measure of the man is that the crew are willing to follow him into fire.
Loved the way the "Apollo" Captain, quickly updated Sheridan. Telling him they were monitoring the situation. "Hold on to your hats!" Now that briefing update.
Well to be fair if they said nothing they ran the risk of being fired upon since they were considered an enemy vessel. In any case it was nice of them to redeem the Apollo, most of the time we saw Sheridan manage to recruit ships that were initially uneasy with following Clark. But the Apollo and its crew were intended to be 100% loyal to Earth it was only when it was revealed that Clark was prepared to destroy earth and its "enemies" were willing to risk their lives to save it that he chose to act. Not because he supported Sheridan's rebellion, but because his duty was to protect the planet.
@@ReaverLordTonus They stayed 100% loyal to earth until the end. They SAVED earth from being destroyed. They weren't sworn in for President Clark, the argument of the captain of the Apollo was just, that the military has not to decide who rules the civil government and therefore he deemed Sheridans run towards earth as honourless. It's the typical dilemma of a military person: Do I stick to my government, even if I KNOW it is illegimate (although the Clark Regime was still legimate in power, as the last election was only three years beforehand, Clark was in his legal tenureship, he just went straight towards dictator when he came into power) - or do I start a rebellion. it's the dilemma people like George Washington had: To they stick to their oath to the King of England - or do they help the upcoming rebellion in the colonies. When Washington joined the rebels, he knew that it meant that if the british troped capture him it means death for high treason. And of course the communication is short between them: They are in a combat situation. Any unnecessary communication can be futile. The captain of the Apollo really did a great manouevre there, don't forget, he even managed to come out of hyperspace exactly in the angle he needed to hit that specific platform. If they even would have come out in a different angle, they wouldn't had enough time to turn correctly and shot the platform before the Agamemnon hits it.
@@ReaverLordTonus General Lefcourt, in command of the Apollo, was Sheridan's mentor; he said earlier in the episode he wished to God he'd never lived to see the day he would have to fire on Sheridan.
4:16 Love the part where the Agamemnon goes through the flaming wreckage of the defense platform, and the music just makes the shot so much better, going from high stakes mood to a sigh of relief.
At 3:41, you can see Sheridan is desperately trying not to cry because he knows what he'll be leaving behind, and the sacrifice he must make, and the sacrifice of everyone on board. This was so heartbreaking.
i just wonder why he didnt order the crew to abandon ship. no need for all of them to die too, its not like they needed to go and push the ship or smth. I guess writing oversight. i mean some ppl are needed to man the controls but i dont think the cooks and cleaners marines and most of the engineers needed to be there for the bang.
@@SandsOfArrakis Well they took quite some time to talk about it, had a dramatic silence and then it still took a while for the ship to actually reach the platform. He could just have yelled "we're going to ram! Everybody who can, get out NOW, i guess you have about 20 seconds!" i mean some people could have been right next to an escape pod, or in a space suit doing repairs and able to just jump out an airlock... sure there wasnt time to wait for everyone to orderly leave, but if the whole ship is going "boom" even 2 people who managed to get out would be better than 0...
And events come full circle. The last time Delenn brought a Minbari fleet to Earth it was to burn the planet. Now she brings that fleet to help save Earth from being burned.
also Sheridan was placed in command of B5 because he was supposed to be a anti aliens hardliner, somebody to piss off especially the Minbary. and with an earth first mentality. but ultimately it was Sheridan, who came back with a massive alien fleet, mostly Minbari, with a Minabri gf to save earth
lol me too, had a 500+ and a 1200 later on, so much fun but I was a kind of pariah as almost all of my friends had either console or Atari ST, had so much fun with the amiga though, some great games. (was a speccy fan before that, 2 colour best colour)
I think JMS made a point that this is the second time the Minbari Fleet approached Earth. The first time was at the battle of the line with the intent to destroy the Earth. Now this time, it was to save it.
"Hey, remember when we fought you guys and you blew up all our stuff?" "Yes." "Wanna do it again, but with our permission this time?" "...Very well." "You think this is weird, I know. Just trust me, okay?"
The Minbari didn’t do crap in this battle they instead got a few of their ships blown up by the EA missiles. Maybe just low budget and not able to show the full battle? As shown with the last platform Minbari and Dellen couldn’t do anything, instead Sheridan nearly died trying to Ram it. Another Earth ship saved the day. Minbari being present in this battle (along with almost all the other races) was pointless as none of them where capable of helping or attacking the final platform aimed at Earth... oh well
@@avenger4cats72 It was deliberate in the storyline that the Minbari and other alien races held back. The mission to liberate Earth had to be done by human ships so that the civil war wasn't just considered an alien invasion by the other side. When Clark turned the defence grid against Earth and he received a call for help Sheridan called the others in to help destroy the platforms as quickly as possible. In terms of how much use they were, maybe not too much as they joined late. But we do see them help destroy some platforms so if they weren't there then maybe there wouldn't only have been that one final platform ready to fire.
Christopher's music really ties things together. Not only does it show how far Sheridan will go to save his home but also conveys of how much danger he is in. And then when General Leftcourt jumped in on the EAS Apollo created a sense of relief that Sheridan is ok but even after we see the defense platform blow up from plasma pulse fire, it felt like the Agamemnon may have been destroyed in the process. It's not only until after a few seconds we see her emerge from the flames battered and beaten, we see that she makes it through. All of this would not have been possible thanks to Christopher Franke's amazing musical talents that really bundled the show together. Would alway love to watch this scene with remastered CGI.
One of the most badass scenes in the entire series. Minbari fighting with humans to save Earth. And back in the day I thought Delenn was pretty cute with her modified bone crown.
think how much more awesome it would have been if they had the budget to use the Reds missile hatches on Long each side if you look on the blueprints for an Omega class destroyer that are 72 missile launchers as well as all the other Weaponry you see
+jpowell180 Yes, because politicans aren't know to spin things. Like to say that letter was made-up by minbari sympathizers to serve their boney masters' plans. It's not like humanity is known for being racist, classist, xenophobic and all around assholes.
There were and still are people who defend Hitler and Stalin. Their are people who still revere Mao. No matter how twisted and evil a leader might be there will always be someone out there who will say and worse believe that they are worth defending.
I know right?? And after Sheridan made the choice to lay down his life for Earth (by ramming the defense platform)! Granted, he didn't have to go through with it, but he accepted his duty with self-sacrificial courage. What more do they want from him?!
Sheridan, while on White Star, headed to Jupiter to attempt to stop recovery of 'dormant' shadow vessel: "This is the closest I have been to Earth in..4 years..who would have thought I'd return in a Minbari Ship?"
Only one human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else.
Notice how, unlike on Star Trek, when things start exploding on the bridge of a starship it's because they've just taken a *real* serious hit, and not just because the shields dropping to 42% causes the control consoles to start blowing up in the crew's faces?
Exactly. And notice how there are real heavy metal bars coming down, not some tiny crumbs debris from the paper like Duranium Alloy. These ships are real "Heavy Metal" and i love how the CGI even shows damaged ships armor with pieces of the ship missing. In addition are all the ships in B5 not blowing up into invisible dust like in ST, but some burned out highly damaged ship hull remnants which then still keep floating in space with debris flying away everywhere from the internal explosions. Only Star Trek Enterprise in the Azati Prime episode showed some comparable nice damage effects. Yet again, this old enterprise was sturdier than any other following more modern tougher Enterprise, which got knocked out already by a single disruptor shot.
G. Thomás Hart It was those darned wars starting with the Eugenics Wars and continuing to the Post-Atomic Horror. Email, smartphones and computer consoles that don't have enough electricity running through them to send a DeLorean through time to the 1950's all became lost technologies!
Larn Regis I allways laughted my ass off at how many "redshirt" characters/extras died in Star Trek just of exploding consoles while the shields were still up..i would think someone in Starfleet made a huge safety mistake there... Also B5 universe has no shields... more advanced races like Vorlons do have some kind of shield technology but the rest of the races dont... at best they have stuff like the EA E-Web system wich is similar to Enterprise "polarize the hull" ... and depend on thick hulls and point-defense systems. In the infamous first contact between earth and mimbar the human fleet (a couple of Hyperion cruisers and Nova Dreadnoughts) destroyed a couple of mimbari ships and seriously damaged 2 Sharlins ... some fans asked JMS how that could happen if the Minbari had so advanced ships and JMS response was "at that close range nothing can survive intact a barrage from even inferior ships.. they just cant".. Minbari superiority were principally about they having stealth tech, more accurate weapons, hugely strong ECM warfare systems, faster and more maneovrable ships with far superior navigation ... but if you could hit them they would fall... like everything else
sparrowlt Early on, when they first started taking the White Star out, Lennier rather pedantically explained that it used the "Vorlon Defense System", which deflected most incoming energy away from the hull. In contrast, Starfleet ships appear to try to channel the incoming energy into massive banks of capacitors which they have opted to install directly behind the control consoles on the main bridge. Hence, when incoming attacks hit the shields, the excess energy causes fireworks on the bridge. Presumably they could not think of a better way to design this.
"The only human to have ever survived battle with a Minbari fleet stands behind me. You stand in front of me. If you value your lives, be. somewhere. else." .... Delenn was just awesome.
Sheridan was Clark's ace in the Hole so to speak since Clark was pretty sure if anyone was a son of Earth and one that didn't take too well to Aliens, it would be him. Clark banked on the hope that if anyone would take a hard stand against any alien and do what is best for humanity even at the expense of said aliens, it would be Sheridan. Then Delenn happened, who is rather cute for a space elf. Ya ya, no pointy ears but a space elf is a space elf damnit!
Actually; it wasn't Delenn. Sheridan wasn't blinded by loyalty or xenophobia. His decision to lay a trap for the Dark Star was out of desperation. I may be mistaken; but he was up for consideration to be the XO to the captain that led the botched first encounter with the.Minbari. He turned it down due to his dislike of the captain.
@@geoffreyprior8931 -- You gotta wonder how often Sheridan would lie awake at night thinking about if he could have prevented the entire war if he'd taken that stupid posting. Probably nearly as often as Delenn wonders how things might have been different if she's yelled "destroy that ship" rather than "kill them all".
@@Grizabeebles wonder how many nights Londo would stay awake during and after the Minbari war; thinking that he could of saved so many lives if only he told the earth generals to translate their message to the Minbari in Centauri along with english.
missiles impacting on all sides I don't know how much more she can take goes to show they never simulated the omega vs the earth defense grid battery's by how they sound like there in uncharted territory fighting against it
This show is a masterpiece of arc writing, special effects, acting and direction not in specific order, its a slow build over nearly 3 series but one that absoloutely rocks when it comes to the conclusions of the multiple plot points.
The brr zap zap brr zap zap of the Agamemnon in this episode, or that earlier one where the pulse aft cannons are firing at fighters with more bass than a Chemical Brothers album...
And to think in the Show we never see it's TRUE Firepower. Those are its "Light" Weapons. The Omega Class could actually lock on to a Sharlin Class Warcrusier and hit it accurately thanks to its sensor package.
I have loved many ships in my time, but there is nothing like the Omega Class Destroyer. Born out of the ashes of the Minbari War, it was humanity's finest ever middle finger to the universe; not only was it obscenely powerful, but it seemed like it was directly mocking the Minbari. You've got gravity? Well, so do we! Your ships are ridiculously well-armored? Well, so are ours! In striving to defeat one of the most powerful younger races, Earth accidentally created something so blisteringly forceful that it could overwhelm, or at least stand up to, virtually anything with less than a million-year head start in technological development. No ship has ever looked or felt more lumbering, mean and dedicated to its mission, and nothing else has ever looked or felt so capable of cleaving a singular star from the rest of the heavens and removing it from the fabric of reality. It is ethereal. And I *love* it.
What made this show great was the music. Either with the Agamemnon on its suicide run, or when marines were invading B5 during 'shattered dream', the directors knew there was no need to needless dialogue when the music score could make it much more powerful!
Yeah, was sad when he passed. The thing is, I don't think that they can reboot the series with the Original cast. Age has caught up with many so new younger actors will have to step in, which is why I would prefer if they would not "Baywatch" or Jersey Shore" the cast. Assuming that there will be a reboot. Sci-fi is on the down trend with crap shows filling in the airwaves.
They could have if maybe Richard Biggs(who played Franklin) and Gerry Doyle(Garibaldi) hadn't passed away G'Kar(Katsulas) had gone off exploring with Lyta Alexander( I never got how both she and Lennier ending up being killed on Earth during the Telepath War(according to JMS) and it was never specified that G'kar returned with her though. I suppose you could explain Garibaldi not being there due to his running Edgar Corp with his wife, but due to how Lorien brought Sherridan back from the dead at Zahaduum you'd think Franklin would go wherever Sherridan goes. its ironic really because Boxlightner is about the right age now that Sherridan was during his time as President of the IA and later Ranger One so it could have been set in that time period. But yes they'd have to do a new series with pretty much a all new cast but then they'd have to retcon Zack Allen because the actor who played him also passed away. But unfortunately WB owns the rights to any TV series based on the medium and they've been stalling on doing a Blu-Ray remaster( to bring the CGI to the same level as The 3 Lost Tales Episodes) even though there is a lot of demand for it. JMS does still hold the rights to movies and he did say back in 2015 that he was looking at doing a movie or series of movies and if needed he could self fund it but all has gone quiet since then.
Wasn't always the best cinematography and graphics, but it didn't stop B 5 from being one of the most awesome shows of it's time. Nail biters like that scene are one of the reasons fans raced home on Saturdays after work for the next installment.
Agreed. But it was also made at a time where men were allowed to be men, women were feminine and yet strong (Ivanova's "I am the right hand of God" speech / Delen's "Be somewhere else" speech) and story was more important then what skin colour the actor and actresses had.
Exactly, men were men , women were feminine but could and often were just as bad ass as the guys, outstanding battle scenes that not even star trek or star wars combined could compare to. B5 was a series made the way a series should be made. And your right, (D'lenn) if you value your lives and wish to live, be somewhere else. Epic line.
There were no better lines in the whole series than the verbal dance between Morden and Vir ... and the ending of that was ... epic (smiling and waving).
Sorry, it aired on Thursdays if I recall correctly. NASA Houston would put out a Code 7R over the PA on the day before so fans of the show could gather to watch early after NASA had pirated the ep off satellite.
Wish I could see a scene where the Captain of the Apollo heard that his boss is trying to kill billions of his own people, and the guy he's been sent to fight is about to give up his life to save 800million innocents.
It came close earlier in the episode where the Apollo captain commented how he'd trained with Sheridan at Earthforce Academy, and that he really didn't want to be fighting against him.
@@Oi1Suzy When the Confederates fired on Ft. Sumter the Union commander was an officer who, at West Point, had trained artillery students. The younger Confederate officer who commanded their artillery had be the other dudes star pupil
Did anyone notice that the actress playing the senator also played a Romulan commander ST: Next Gen of a Romulan warbird. In that episode, Troi was surgically altered to appear Romulan and impersonate a Tal Shiar and operative and was put on that warbird in order to do some "cowboy diplomacy" by transporting a high ranking Romulan official and I believe two of his aides to the Enterprise.
You see a lot of Trek crossover with B5, for various reasons. Which is all the more impressive when the lawsuit against B5 was presented by Trek producers...
@Mike DeMarco Originally they were going to design the Excalibur to be an actual destroyer version of the Whitestars - complete with the purple bio-armor. No idea why they didn't do it though and it's a shame - it would have been amazing
James: Missiles are impacting on all sides! Sheridan: Continue firing! James: I don`t know how much more she can take! Sheridan: Continue firing! The next scene the Aggie is attacking those satellites full speed ahead. Oh, I loved that scene. Would have loved to see such a battle scene in actual space combat. In all those other scenes the EA capital ships seemed to be so slow. Way to go, Aggie!
The Omegas are pretty fast. In Call to arms you can watch them haul ass with some major speed. The EA Warlocks where even faster. When Sheridan told Dellen "we need you" and she replied we are there, it showed Omegas/Sharlins side by side along with Starfuries and Nial fighters side by side. For some reason, the Omegas and Starfuries fired way before (and much more often) then the Minbari ships did, even though Dellen said they where helping; and especially considering the EA defense grid would destroy 40% of the planet in one shot -- well - every allied ship (and EA ship) would obviously open fire the second they got within range... Yet most of the allied ships never fired which means they werent within firing range, yet the Omegas where side by side the allied ships and Sharlins, so I'm not sure why. Unless the Omegas have better range than the allied ships including the Sharlin, or maybe just where able to move faster toward the platform putting them in firing range quicker (and the Sharlins DID fire multiple times, but they never hit anything). Or maybe it was another overlooked error. Considering JMS never told us much, we'll never know.
ThatRebel 17 That is partially correct: The scene you describe is the extraction from the Death Cloud. There the Omegas are awfully fast - which seems very unusual. But I meant the actual combat situations - for example the battle of Proxima III, where most of the destroyers were shown almost "standing still" or the slow movements in most of the other engagement scenes. Even during the beginning of the Call to Arms battle, those Destroyers seem more floating than actual flying through space. At least very slow. That is what I was referring to. Concerning the Minbari in the Battle for Earth: If I remember correctly, the writers idea for this scene was, that Minbari and other alien nations provide support to the EA warships, but held themselves back in order to prevent the idea from spreading that their actions are an alien invasion.
Michael Minden the ships at Proxima III were "defending" the planet.. they had to keep position and fight-off the "enemy" fleet.. thats why they barelly move.. they are holding ground.. the ships in a Call to arms are actually escaping the planet killer so they are at max aceleration and they keep up with the Warlocks and even the Excalibur .... In the first episode of Crusade we can see an Omega (EAS Persephone) keeping up with a Drakh cruiser on the run... and in season 3 the Agammenon could keep up with the WhiteStar (yes the WS was in Jupiter's outer atmosphere but the Aggie was very close to it and not much far above...
That scene was a masterstroke. What was the enemy captain a few hours ago, became an ally of necessity when their oaths to Protect Earth was put to the test. And it puts a light onto those in service. It is a hard place to be when you have to decide your orders to kill the enemy or to defend what you swore to defend is put to the test.
: I remember watching this when it was first on tv, and when the Apollo came out of the blue to save the day everyone in the room lost their minds. Talk about an epic save.
The Agamemnon was probably decommissioned after this, but she's definitely enough of a hero ship to have an Agamemnon-A to continue her legacy 😉 Maybe one of those nice shiny warlock class destroyers
@@Revkor They were still building her class of ship, hence the advanced model destroyers that the White Star fleet had to fight, those were half built Omega's with Shadow enhancements. EarthForce was rapidly upgrading ships immediately after this, they didn't want any of their fleet (a chunk of which had just been destroyed in the Civil War) to require moving parts to create gravity, a massive weakness in combat. Sadly I think Agamemnon would have been one of the first decommissioned due to it's battle damage, she is no longer a ship of the line with the Warlock and Victory classes being rushed to production.
I used to watch this with my mum before she passed away . . . . . . Babylon 5 will ALWAYS be a special memory for me, but i can't watch it alone, it hurts too much.

In the final season, instead of a monologue, TNT decided to attempt a montage of the last four seasons for the opening credits. The final scene of that montage before the title graphics was the Aggy flying out of those flames.
@@actionsub It did work rather well, as TNT not only used iconic lines from previous seasons, it also altered those lines across the season. Every episode puts an emphasis on different lines. Plus the epic Chris Franke intro music made it memorable in its own right.
Such a powerful and amazing scene, among the best (if not the best) in the Babylon 5 series. Humans, Minbari, Brakiri and other reaces working together the save Earth. The powerful background music, Delenn's "We are there", Earth and Minbari ships flying in formation together, Omega Destroyers firing, Sheridan willing to sacrifice himself, the feeling of disbelief when the Defense Grid is targeting Earth. Really amazing scenes.
Sheridan has to be one of the best cast characters in Sci find history. On par with picard (tng), kirk (tos) comander adama (bsg reboot) and Malcolm Reynolds (firefly)
+Paul Beaney I'm honestly not a fan of Kirk (the character, not those that play him). He's just a playboy cowboy with a starship. Han and Malcolm pulled that off far better. Hell even Picard got more alien sex (granted, TNG had a longer life) and did it with class. Maybe Kirk fit the times better, I wasn't around so I can't say but I think it's just... Bad. Now Dr. McCoy was well cast/written.
ghfun1 Did he ever actually die? That 1 guy, I forget his name, used, shall we say the Force, to keep him alive. I mean he definitely saw the light but he never actually died.
+David Kelly he died in zahdum in the season 3 ending then Lorien revived him so he died and came back to life something that neither Kirk or Picard did.. In the end of the show season 5 ending he joined the 1st ones ..
That rapid fire barrage the agamemnon was dishing out is so epic to see, imagine if you had the whole fleet at mars unleashing that kind of firepower, sheridan would've been wiped out.
It would take too long (remember Earth ships are incredibly slow at turning because they rotate to create gravity, which is why Delenn offered Earth the artificial gravity technology to get them involved in the Alliance since this alone would significantly improve their ships), and wouldn't necessarily work anyway since the platform would be firing at them while they were are stationary target, which may well have disabled the rear guns as well. At which point they'd have no guns and be facing the wrong way for ramming speed.
Even if there were no working guns left, that 180 should still have been on the table: an _Expanse_ style flip and burn would have given them a chance to incinerate the satellite...
@@ericssmith2014 Earth force destroyers are 1714 meters long using rotating sections to create a gravity field internally and to a slight extent externally. Bound by Newtonian physics the flip you suggest is simply impossible in the time they had. Even the White Stars had some bounds to Newtonian Physics.
What actor wouldn't LOVE to give that line about ramming speed. Also, his aide, with no words, giving that little gulp and stiffening his back in agreement. A great little piece of acting,
1:40 That guy has to be the most decorated pilot in Earth Force. Has been in practically every battle since season 1 of Babylon 5 involving Star Fury's, and does the same exact movements every time. lol, love stock footage.
One of the best moments of drama & action in science fiction EVER! When D' lenn says "We are there!" It gives chills- in a great way. Still WAY too under- appreciated by too many people. As for a reboot- Oh, please! I really don't care for another failed re-do starring whoever is "hot right now" [ esp. with actors too young for the roles they're playing].
Wow a less than five minute clip elicits more emotion and excitement in me than any series in the last twenty years! They just don't make 'em how they used to!!!
They can't. Not with today's "Hollywood Standards". B5 is a remarkable piece of TV Sci-Fi / TV Series that has coherent arcs all connected from the Pilot to the Last Episode when Humanity finally watches the End of Sol and join the other Elder races out Beyond the Black.
I would hate to see such a groundbreaking and historically significant show cheapened by a bad reboot. Maybe if it was done properly yes but reboots and re imaginings have such a bad record. BSG was the only one that was any good but even that went off the rails in it's final season.
True that. Or worse reboot with a political / social agenda as with all the recent movie reboots. I would like a reboot that stays true to the spirit and story with updated tech and CG but not at the expanse to the show's character.
+Steven Lim In this episode of Babylon 5, Telepaths demand their own bathrooms, while earth gov orders them to use the public restrooms. Sheridan must race against the clock to find a compromise before the shit hits the fan.
A Reboot of B5 you say? How about no. The only thing they could improve is all the CGI sections of the series. That's it. Do not mess up the rest by retreading it.
+Makrokosmos the CGI was good for what it was back in the day...remastering it, yes, I can agree...totally redoing it...its not going to add to it because B5 was the show that started to change how CGI was done in most space sci-fi going forward...BSG took heavily from the stuff done in B5...
Francis Herrera I disagree. in B5, The Battle Scenes shown rarely match what is being said by the characters, they also lack consistency. Take the fight to liberate the Proxima Colony. Its is chaoticly shot and makes little sense, how the ships position themselves and appear to be warping around the battlefield. Its the actors performances that elevated this FX cluserfuck into a memorable scene. Later on in the series, the FX crew got their shit togther and delivered a lot more coherent battlescapes. That beign said: a little edit ofthe fight coreography and an update to the FX would not ADD much in the form of groundbreakling new things, but it WOULD BE DAMN FREAKING AWESOME to look at. ^^
+Makrokosmos I agree to a point, but if the CGI is improved too much, it could take away from the rest of the episodes. Just look at the Remastered episodes of Star Trek, or the Star Wars prequel trilogy. They overloaded on CGI so much that it took away from the stories themselves. Redo CGI? Sure, why not. Over-done? No thanks.
Alex Palmer I do not see how the Remastered Star Trek episodes have suffered from the FX not being shit. In fact they are much less cringeworthy ti watch now. As for Star wars: Erm well, it was not the CGI that doomed those films.... it did not help, sure... but izt was not the cause....
Perfect ramming order. Not done with bravado and with a big yell because he knows he's ending the lives of his crew, but you also know from the conviction in his voice that he's going to save the damned planet.
The end part always gets me, The Apollo was "the enemy" then became the ally Sheridan needed the most. Like Sheridan said, they were people who loved Earth, just didn't know they were fighting for the wrong person.
It's weird how little we see of clark but from his actions we how deeply rotten he was to the very core of his being. All that power in the hands of a deceased mind.

Oh, that's a great connection. Considering, originally it was all planned to be one character, I suspect it was a detail decided from the start

"For her.
How much of it is Captain Hall's crew knowing deep down they were in the wrong vs the loyalists knowing deep down they were right.
@@catprog Likely a strong connection there as well.
Not out of fear but out of loyalty to the idea of the nation they were fighting for you don’t step foot in a space ship if fear is in your vocabulary this isn’t a plain or a boat one wrong move and your dead what your seeing are people forced to fight and people choosing to
I suspect JMS had to end it this way; it left little room for moral ambiguity who was right.
If you cried a little watching this you are ok with me :)
I'm man enough to admit that B5 made me tear up more than a few times...thoughtful writing, solid acting, and the music was perfect. They also knew how to shut up and have some great moments, and not ruin it with filler dialogue.
I never cried at this scene, but I was in awe watching it.
Manly tears and B5 are not uncommon. Though usually they involve G'Kar giving a speech. Or Sleeping in Light.

"We're clear of the explosion. Commander Sheridan's balls protected us from the blast."
*Sheridan dusting ash off his public hair*
More the cosmic radiation protection any ship in Babylon 5 must have, as they have neither deflectors or shields in that universe. The danger from the platform for the ship was mostly scrapnels and high radiation. We always forget when we see space scenes (and also often the producers forget it, gladly not JMS) that space is a vacuum. The heat of the explosion is not a danger for a ship.
No kidding!!!!! What in the name of Galaxy are they made from?
"Delenn, we need you."
"We are there!"
My kinda gal!
I think my favorite Delenn moment was her arrival in "Severed Dreams" making the comanders of the enemy EA ships likely crap their underoos LOL! "If you value your lives...be somewhere else!"...*on EA ships*...."retreating to jumpgate sir"...."NO! No need....fire up the jump engines....we're making our OWN jump points!"
they intentionally make some shadows and legroom to stride around on minbari ships bridges to be able to have scenes like that...
That scene of Agamemnon flying through the fireball has been seared into my mind for a good decade or two.
It doesn't hurt that they used in in the opening credits of Season 5, I suspect.

Yea. But the explosion was so over the top, still not sure how they had not all died or at least been even more severely damaged.
"Will you follow me into fire? Will you follow me into darkness? Will you follow me into death?"
i just wonder why he didnt order the crew to abandon ship. no need for all of them to die too, its not like they needed to go and push the ship or smth. I guess writing oversight. i mean some ppl are needed to man the controls but i dont think the cooks and cleaners marines and most of the engineers needed to be there for the bang.
@@Kira-zy2ro Pretty sure the platform was about to fire. So getting the non essential people of the ship would take far too much time.
No need for a reboot. Just tidy up some of the visual effects like they did with Star Trek TOS.
iirc the effects were originally done on a Commodore Amiga, which is amazing if you think about it.

dakariszulu I had a 1200 😂
I think JMS made a point that this is the second time the Minbari Fleet approached Earth. The first time was at the battle of the line with the intent to destroy the Earth. Now this time, it was to save it.
Attacking a defense system designed to make their fleets bleed worse than last time
"Hey, remember when we fought you guys and you blew up all our stuff?"
"Yes."
"Wanna do it again, but with our permission this time?"
"...Very well."
"You think this is weird, I know. Just trust me, okay?"
The truth points to itself. Again.
Can watch the Agamemnon charge in like that at like 2:10 a hundred times and it will still be one of the most bad ass moments in sci-fi.
Oh, heck yeah it is! I wonder how that would've gone down on the big screen with a bigger budget for even greater FX.
think how much more awesome it would have been if they had the budget to use the Reds missile hatches on Long each side if you look on the blueprints for an Omega class destroyer that are 72 missile launchers as well as all the other Weaponry you see
I still wish we see the Omega use those two big-f**king-gun below the launch bay.

There were and still are people who defend Hitler and Stalin. Their are people who still revere Mao. No matter how twisted and evil a leader might be there will always be someone out there who will say and worse believe that they are worth defending.

Yet again, this old enterprise was sturdier than any other following more modern tougher Enterprise, which got knocked out already by a single disruptor shot.
everybody knows - fuses don't REALLY exist in the Star Trek universe ;-)

It was those darned wars starting with the Eugenics Wars and continuing to the Post-Atomic Horror.
Minbari superiority were principally about they having stealth tech, more accurate weapons, hugely strong ECM warfare systems, faster and more maneovrable ships with far superior navigation ... but if you could hit them they would fall... like everything else
sparrowlt
Early on, when they first started taking the White Star out, Lennier rather pedantically explained that it used the "Vorlon Defense System", which deflected most incoming energy away from the hull.
Man I *LOVED* this show... "Delenn, we need you"... "We are there". Goose bumps !

@@Dhalin Nice.
The Volkans may be elven in appearance
But the Minbari are elven in sperit
Actually; it wasn't Delenn. Sheridan wasn't blinded by loyalty or xenophobia. His decision to lay a trap for the Dark Star was out of desperation.
I may be mistaken; but he was up for consideration to be the XO to the captain that led the botched first encounter with the.Minbari. He turned it down due to his dislike of the captain.
@@geoffreyprior8931 -- You gotta wonder how often Sheridan would lie awake at night thinking about if he could have prevented the entire war if he'd taken that stupid posting.

ME TOO!!!

Sorry, folks. The whole reboot thing, without Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar, just can't go there with you.
James Brand
Also without Jerry Doyle and Stephen Furst and Richard Biggs and Tim Choate.
Don't forget Jeff Conaway, aka "Zack Allen", Garibaldi's right hand man, later Security Chief, and the last of the core crew to leave B5.
Epic line.

I love watching the Omega class destroyers in action, and that Minbari cruiser in the background was going ham with her neutron cannons.
He could have easily made it a Warlock class too, as that was the cutting edge Earthforce ship at that time, _and_ it had a huge beam cannon.

Veritech Girl They did nothing besides get a few of their own ships destroyed by the EA defense missiles
ThatRebel 17 2:20 that’s Minbari weaponry taking out that orbital platform pal
ThatRebel 17 we can assume they’ve been destroying other defense satellites off screen . . .
Agamemnon heroic charge forever! working them beams and pulses!
In season 2 its said that the Agamemnon is one of the faster ships.
"Apollo to Agamemnon - Appears we got here just in the nick of time! What does that make us?"
"Big Damn Heroes, Sir!"
"Ain't we just?"
The Agamemnon was probably decommissioned after this, but she's definitely enough of a hero ship to have an Agamemnon-A to continue her legacy 😉
Maybe one of those nice shiny warlock class destroyers
I like to think after this she was given a permanent dry sock slip to preserve her as a legacy ship like Missouri.
doubt it. she is hurt but not crippled and still top of the line. she spent a few years in drydock
Not gonna lie, the title 'Agamemnon's Last Charge' is pretty awsome

Yes it is. Pretty sure I'd buy a Blue-Ray release
..... yet !
Earthforce capital ships seem to be able to take unbelievable punishment.
StevieWasp They are build for that... Specially after the Minbari war
In a universe with no shields, it has to be that way
They learned a lot from the Minbari war. That is one of the lessons, as the only way they could take out Minbari cruisers was by ramming them.
The ships can take as much as the writers say they can and no more
They're basically the Toyota Hilux of space cruisers. 😁
"Forward guns are down, we can't fire!"
"OK, turn the ship 180 degrees and use the REAR GUNS"
I was thinking that! Alexander's rear guns one-shot a heavy cruiser that was chasing her down.
@@richardcrooks6713 the time it took for them to close to ram they could angle the ship to have the rear guns fire
I would hate to see such a groundbreaking and historically significant show cheapened by a bad reboot. Maybe if it was done properly yes but reboots and re imaginings have such a bad record. BSG was the only one that was any good but even that went off the rails in it's final season.

How about no.
The only thing they could improve is all the CGI sections of the series. That's it. Do not mess up the rest by retreading it.
+Makrokosmos Aye, agreed with ya.
+Makrokosmos the CGI was good for what it was back in the day...remastering it, yes, I can agree...totally redoing it...its not going to add to it because B5 was the show that started to change how CGI was done in most space sci-fi going forward...BSG took heavily from the stuff done in B5...
Francis Herrera
I disagree. in B5, The Battle Scenes shown rarely match what is being said by the characters, they also lack consistency.
Over-done? No thanks.
Alex Palmer
I do not see how the Remastered Star Trek episodes have suffered from the FX not being shit. In fact they are much less cringeworthy ti watch now.
