Me too been working on battle tech minis lately as a break from my space wolves; just to break up the monotony of batch painting. Just did a smoke plume almost exactly like this a week ago, wish I had seen this first though. But have been doing a lot of molten and hot metal on the mechs exhausts and what not.

So first off that looks awesome and is better than anything I can paint. I wonder how well it would have worked for that last grey highlight to be done with bad dry brushing techniques (no dampening wiping off excess paint on paper towel), I think that could work really well for the literal ash you were depicting, also maybe bring some of the blacks and greys up higher into the yellow flame for even more contrast. Maybe do some recess washes with white oils then go over those(once dry) with florescent acrylic paints/inks, maybe bring in some reds to the higher points of the orange area and the recesses of the just smoke area.
Awesome! This is a great method and I’m excited to try it out. Do you think using some blues instead of yellows/oranges would work similarly as fusion exhaust?
