I was working for TWA in Paris, 101 Champs Elysee. We would sneak to the lobby once in a while to watch the Olympics on TV monitors set up by TWA. Great memories of Killy & Peggy Fleming who won gold in skating.
Incredible skier and Champion one of the GOATS! How could he ski so fantastic in those little leather Lange boots? Amazing. Wish he didn't retire at 25, would have loved to see him race Thoeni in 1970.
Lange never made leather boots. Killy was wearing custom Le Trappeurs, made in the same village as his Dynamic VR17 skis. Canadian skier Nancy Greene was the first Lange convert, starting in 1966,; she won a gold and a silver in them at Grenoble. Killy went to work for Lange (as well as Head) after the 1968 season, and was equipped with Lange Comp IIs and Head Killy 800 skis in the 1972 film "Snow Job." But it's quite clear that none of the boots available in '68 were especially helpful for the technique that Killy pioneered. Truly functional high back boots started coming around in 1971.
@@monkmchorning Thanks! I found a 1966 Le Trappeur poster ad on eBay... features a cutaway view of their FIS boot. Very cool. Met Jean Claude and Nancy at a 1970 ski show in Toronto. Spider Sabich did a carpet-ramp demo session too. Also, I still have my 1972 Lange Comp II high back boots! JCK's extreme glacier skiing in Snowjob was amazing, glad it's on film and DVD.
I don't know much about skiing but I do love footage like this and when it was shot on 16mm film. Clearly, Jean Claude Killy was ahead of his game. I do know that he was a lucky man because he married one of France's most stunning actresses, Danielle Gaubert. Though she was taken from this world at such an early age (42), they had a child together. Rest in peace Danielle.
Killy, un immense français qui nous a rendu si fiers d'être français! Grenoble 68, c'était Killy et de Gaulle, une immense France. Malheureusement, Mai 68 est arrivé et ce fut le début de la descente de la France.
I'm always amazed to see how far we've came over the years, from todays digitally designed composite equipment which has changed alpine ski racing technique profusely.. hats off to racers like Killy, he blazed the path..
Imagine skiing that course in that flat light. Killy looked barely in control, losing edges, waving his arms, upper body all over the place, yet he held on to win.
Every year, the reviews in Skiing said this was the ski for going fast on ice. Back then, all the best ice skis were wet-wrap construction, but Dynamic and Volkl were the only ones doing it around a laminated wood core.
Killy started the ski racing craze. The sport took off. The equipment and racers improved very rapidly after that.

a great guy, had him as a coach in 1970 at the Lange-Dynamic Summer camp at Mammoth Mt , Calif. He was a fabulous teacher and very kind.
Yes, a great guy and Champion! I met him and Nancy Green at a ski show in 1970 (Toronto).
Apparently he's friends with Putin
