The designs of each mob are compelling and unique in their own way. But the pair of pixels I think shines the most is the cricket, since the grasshopper looks like a footstep particle from grass, and the fly is just grey and annoying irl. Thus the winner is Cricket!

Among the three, while the fly adds a degree of difficulty to the game, and the crickets color scheme is the most unique, I would feel like the grasshopper is the best choice, as you get a grass hopper along side a grasshopper.
Plus we don't kow what kind of fly would be implemented. It could be a housefly. It could be a horsefly. Hell, it could even be a botfly.

I think a fly as a particle effect in certain biomes (and around zombies) would be neat. I think Crickets would be a great addition though, simply for nighttime ambiance when there's no hostile mobs. Maybe even introduce blood moons for crazy hostile mob nights, and blue moons for peaceful nights to shake things up a bit too.

I know this is a joke but I think there's lots of potential for atmospheric mobs like this in the game. The cricket sound effect alone would be great if it played at night in certain biomes probably based on proximity to grass blocks with sky access
This! Minecraft need more ambience, whether that be mobs or sounds, it sorely needs it. Especially now with the new terrain and a few new biomes (caves included.)

It is the ONLY one who isn't absolutely the most anoying thing ever, but it also adds a new block into the game.
And don't get me started about the design. The contrast between the shades of green creates a really nice and vivid atmosphere almost any player can appreciate.

honestly, would love the grass hopper in the game. tiny 2 pixel thing hopping around the long grass and flowers in a field. unironically would love to see it almost similar to nether biome particles, but ground level in the overworld. fireflies/flies for the swamp, termites/small bugs in deserts, stuff like that. almost like those small grey particles in old mc water that I always thought were lil fish

I really feel the fly has an inmense potential, not only being able to probably distract the warden with its sound, but also adding new possible effects like fly poisoning, also could have interesting interactions with the spider mob.

The fly, though it looks useless, it has a lot of lore and gameplay potential. However i do see the appeal for the cricket and the grass hopper, as they both can increase gameplay drastically. Each one is good. But personally, I’m in love with the color pallet for the fly, grey and dark grey really fit the whole game.

The thing with these (and the firefly itself) is that it seems like arthropods in general grow quite big in minecraft. I think it is an interesting bit of implied lore and I kinda hope they never add a pixel bug mob in the game for this reason.
This. With spiders, bees and silverfish being so big it doesn't make sense for any other insect to be just two pixels. Even if we say they are only for ambience purposes you could just as much have insect sounds playing in the background and the firefly would have had to be more detailed (something similar to experience points, not just two pixels) to actually look good as part of the ambience.
Spiders are big enough to ride on Bees are larger than your head, and silverfish are as long as your arm.

Sorry, the mob vote has been cancelled. Concept art isn't commitment after all. Adding in flies is dangerous, as flies carry diseases and we don't want kids playing with flies. Crickets are also toxic probably we don't know. Finally, grasshoppers were too difficult to implement because we were too busy adding the newest security feature: The ability to automatically delete someone's profile by typing /delete [username] in chat. We received a lot of feedback about our chat reporting system and how players didn't like it, so we cut out the middleman and allowed all players to simply delete their harasser's profile - no report necessary!

I've seen some comments about how flys could be used to see where players/ mobs died or that they fly around zombies. I think while that's cool and all, they don't really dive into the true potential flies have.
As flies are scavengers who break down decaying matter, perhaps the player could use flies to compost items. While, yes, there is already a composter, it is limited in it's use and very unrealistic (not saying minecraft has to be super realistic).
What if the player could put more than just plants into a composter; (more) foods, tools, eggs, etc. and after a few in game days it will become "fertile soil", nutrient rich dirt that when farmed on yields faster crop growth.
Along with that, any item, that required some sort of mineral to make (such as tools), that were put into the composter, will drop 1 of whatever the mineral required was to make it (ex: 1 iron pick > 1 iron). This would be helpful to recycle any unwanted items without completely loosing everything (I know this is already possible with furnaces however they only work with iron and gold tools, and only give a single nugget, either they could remove this feature or make it actually useful and return all of the iron/gold).
How does this tie into flies? Perhaps flies could be used to speed up this process, making them not just for atmosphere, but an actually useful mob. If flies detect a composter that is filled, they will gather around it and begin speeding up the process of composting; also mating, but we ignore that part.

Fly:
They should spawn en masse in swamps and sometimes in plains biomes. Rarely in taigas and never in cold/snow biomes. They die if you take them into a snow biome.
They occasionally land on your food if you're holding it, and when that happens, eating the food will cause you to get nausea. If food is stacked, then the food with the fly will move to a different part of the inventory.
They can occasionally also bite, dealing ⅕ of a heart of damage. Also there's a 1 in 100000 chance for the fly to spread a virus status effect that deals half a heart of damage per second for a random time between 5 and 45 seconds. However, eating a golden apple cures you and eating a notch apple gives you a status effect that lasts for 20 minutes that prevents you from ever getting bitten or infected by flies.
You can spread the infection by getting within 2 blocks of a player, so social distancing makes it into the game.
You can put them in a furnace and get edible flies, which are supposedly a delicacy in certain countries.

Ah man, the striking neon green pixel followed by the dark green pixel shade is beautiful. And the addition of the grass-hopper along with it would be great too.
At first I was legitimately thinking Mojang “leaked” it to take attention off Microsoft forcing their hand. That being said, something like a cricket and firefly would be a VERY nice touch. There’s not a mandatory relationship with the frog and firefly and the game needs ambience. Genuinely, I feel like Minecraft could become so much more if Mojang offered the ability to load custom mods from a server and remove the technical barrier of installing them. Obviously RCE is a concern but Mojang could vet the mods/alert a player it’s not verified if not vetted, and offer their own service like Forge/Fabric. It would benefit the modding community so much to have those so as to not need so much work per update.
Mojang made those decisions on their own.
I agree Minecraft needs ambience and the firefly would've been cool.
I also agree that Mojang needs to make their own moding API though who knows what they'd do to it (what limitations, how bad/good it'd work etc)

i would love to see the cricket because it could be a mob found in almost every biome AND crickets would be frog food *AND* they would be one of the first ambient mobs because they could make a very quiet cricket noise that would be clear enough when you are 3 blocks away or so and when you sleep next to a bunch of crickets without a roof over your bed you get an achievement either called "Just like the real outdoors" or "Camping under the stars" and you could even put them in a bottle and put it in an item frame and you could still hear the crickets cricketing

It’s hard to pick they are so different and extremely detailed
I say the fly. It would add some more food for the frogs. It also opens up a whole new gameplay experience. It could bring in the pteronarcophobia (fear of flies) mode, which would give you nausea and speed when in their vicinity and force you to store your food in places inaccessible to flies (flynets, a new item crafted using string and paper). This could be a fun challenge for minecraft veterans looking for a new mode to grind out.
Actual gameplay aside, the fly model itself is so much more vibrant than the cricket and the grasshopper, especially considering the environment they will be seen in. The grasshopper will most likely be seen in the green grass, making it much harder to see. It would add no real change, unless you were going up a hill and just managed to see one. Crickets would most likely be a nuisance to players merely trying to appreciate the beauty of minecraft. For example, having a friend hide a cricket under your floorboards would be a minor inconvenience, as you would then have to burn your house down and hopefully save your computer from the ashes.
On the other hand, flies will also be seen everywhere. However, they will be much more visible compared to the cricket. A cricket would blend into dirt, podzol, and tree trunks. Flies would only be hard to see in caves, but this would not be a problem due to the spider. The spider, being a natural predator to the fly, guarantees that the fly is unable to find camouflage in the stone. This would make it easier for players to avoid, or seek out, flies rather than running from them after being snuck up upon.
In conclusion, the fly would provide a much higher quality gameplay experience. They would provide an optional challenge for those wanting to live life on the edge, while allowing those wanting a safer game to, well, stay away from the flies. On an unrelated note help there's a fly in my room I can't sleep

All jokes aside I think adding a cricket would be a cool mob, they could have cricket noises during the night, you could cook them for food, and you could maybe use them to tame frogs.

Cricket only because it would add alot of ambiance to the night time world. Additionally, Fireflies that actually produce light around them. I feel like the additions of other sounds would really help set the tone of the game aswell, making it more - fantasyesc.

Cricket sounds would get anoying REALLY FAST. Have you never went home late at night and found out that a cricket somehow entered your home. You can not sleep, you can not find it, all you can do is wait around while listening to the laughter of the cricket, almost tormenting you, knowing that it's too late to find it.
Anywayyy, grasshopper is just the best out of the 3. Flies are also horrible for obvious reasons. Therefore the only option left has to be the logical one which should be voted into the game.

@@tre_._ that's exactly the problem, actually. beds already had a purpose, it was to skip the night. the tradeoff for not using a bed was not skipping the night and having to work around nighttime mobs. by adding the phantom, they made it so by not skipping the night for too long you get these extra annoying mobs that are a pain to hit and just slap you around occasionally (not to mention how loud they are.)
what if you want to do things during the night? like, y'know, kill mobs or something? well, what you can do to get around this is get in a bed and instantly leave it without sleeping. what this means is that phantoms don't even serve their intended purpose: to make you sleep. you have to go find a bed and right click it (which might be annoying if phantoms are around you because monsters are nearby) and then instantly leave and they suddenly stop spawning.
i can't see how this in any way makes the game better. this doesn't make it more difficult, doesn't fix any pre-existing problems, doesn't add more atmosphere... it's just annoying. whether or not they serve their intended purpose (which, in their current state, phantoms do not,) all that's added to the game is an inconvenience.

The grasshopper is easily the best one. Flys can be defeated with a bug zapper (coming in 1.20) and crickets can be defeated by turning off mob noises. The grasshopper has an extremely great idea and should 100% be added into the game.
tbf a cricket would be pretty cool. You could replicate those cool summer nights when it's just you and your thoughts, and all you can hear is the wind and crickets. Really calming stuff.
I think you have got a lot of potential as a designer for Mojang.
I'd vote for the fly since it can probably fulfill the fireflies original purpose in the game without being in controversy. Also since flies are attracted by rotting food they would probably be attracted to rotten flesh in a way similar to how the allay is attracted to music but instead of using sound it uses smell thus you can theoretically make a fly farm using rotten flesh to feed the frogs.

Cricket and Grasshopper look the same to me, they should've at least have different colours or something to distinguish between the two. I'd pick the Fly then, at least the colours different

The fly would be an interesting feature since they could add a lot in swamp biomes or around horses/cows/pigs, but they are kinda gross and annoying
Crickets would be a pretty cool addition, especially during nighttime and we can have some cricket sounds, but other than that they wouldn't have much use.
Grasshoppers don't do anything
I would vote crickets, mostly because flies would just make the game more gross

They own minecraft, they have always been against userfeedback on any of their products in the past. Crickets have so much potential but im personally a grasshoper fan. The way it looks is just beautiful. The texture great and i think it would improve a lot of aspects in the game.

Honestly, crickets would be actually pretty neat ambience for the game! As the day fades into night, you start to hear the crickets chirping in forest biomes. If you go near them they stop chirping and start hopping away
Not currently that many biomes it would fit.
Now if they went through implementing a bunch of BOP mod biomes and blocks first, it'd be a lot cooler.
I think fireflies should’ve been added as a biome particle effect, like warped and crimson forests

I relate so much to looking for crickets via sound, used to do that all the time as a kid
You know, the fly is pretty cool, but if it had some brighter more vibrant colors, maybe even one bright color and one dark so they contrast eachother, that would make the fly so much cooler
tbh crickets sound like a nice idea, but instead of an entity it'll be a block state
they'd effect tall grass, make noises, and when you run through the grass it'd "hop off" returning the grass to normal state and emitting particles
maybe you could harvest them using a net item, an edible item for those who wanna freak people out
cicadas for logs on trees might work using the same way
It should take a lot of them to fill half of hunger, that way there is really no reason to eat them because of being the worst food in the game

the fly would add a harmless pest you could keep an eye on if you have cake or food on item frames left out for a few days
The cricket can be a nice addition to the night ambience but also creates an annoying constant sound you might loose your sanity over
And the grasshopper could be a neat little bug you find everywhere. Everywhere. It's in your empty chests, by your house, in the caves. And if uou kill it, you get an effect called "karma" it's like bad omen.
I'm 99% sure if you kill a grasshopper it's like Hella bad luck. I'm probably swapping it with a cricket but they'd be meh mobs obviously. Annoying but there

I think they'll add the fly because the previous "light bug" would have the same movement--they just have to do a recolor and add the buzzing. The cricket is nice because it adds atmosphere. The grasshopper adds the motion of the fly AND cricket without the noises. I WANT THE GRASSHOPPER. No really a green hopper would be interesting!
Even if they are voted in if Mojang finds out that 1 random species of the inscent can kill 1 random animal it will be removed instead of it just being an ambient mob.
The cricket is the most important. If you're bored you can listen and try to figure out where the cricket sounds are coming from
Honestly the cricket has my vote, it's actually some noise other than the less than regular piano music that plays, plus they really did a good job with the details of how crickets look. Also, you could feed spiders crickets like scorpions, which could be a way to tame spiders! Very interesting indeed, still not sure why they went with the realistic approach.

In my opinion, the cricket would add the most to Minecraft since it adds ambience and atmosphere to biomes. That's what the firefly was meant to do originally, and I think the cricket would be as good, if not better.

I wonder where they got the design idea from, it's just so innovative.. we've never seen anything this atmospheric in minecraft before, just think of how much atmosphere these mobs will contribute.
I sure hope none of these insects are poisonous to any real life animal if eaten, because that would be horrible! An animal dying because it ate something that's poisonous to it?? I know we blame humans for drinking poison on purpose..
But the animals are DUMB! And THEY don't know! So to stop kids from feeding these poisonous insects to animals or from persuading them into a new diet consisting solely of insects that they saw in a voxel-based sandbox video game where g-force doesn't exist, I hope that they complete remove any chance of them being added to the game, because god forbid some 5 year old somehow catches a fast flying insect that only comes out at night and then somehow finds and gets the aformentioned animal to eat said insect which it probably knows is poisonous or will at the very least avoid eating due to it's adaptions e.g: grasshoppers scare off animals by making spooky dubstep.
Because we all know that everything people do in video games, they do in real life as well! I've commit countless warcrimes and atrocities myself! It's so disappointing to see that these insects can't be added because video games and gamers just can't be trusted to not commit genocides...
I miss when gamers just commit grand theft auto and drive-bys.. those were the days.. before nuclear killstreaks and feeding insects to animals...
They did also change the parrots not to eat cookies, because of the chocolate they depict.
The thing is, they could have added the mob anyway, just without making it part of the diet of any other mob.
