Amen Matt! The problem with these ‘self help’ books for a Christian is that they are building up the flesh, focusing on self, rather than dying to self. It’s the biggest problem with motivational preachers like Joel Osteen, just building up the self, rather than the spirit, which is appealing to most people.

    Hi Matt
Amen. 🙏 I have what most people want. A nice house, money, new cars, But when I get out of my nice car I walk off it’s gone, leave my house to go out, I’m not in my nice house, buy what I want with my money, then put it aside. all these things are temporary, worldly possessions that I can go without.
The only thing that I have to have, that brings permanent, peace and happiness, is the knowledge of the Bible the Gospel, and fulfilment of a relationship with Jesus on earth and the knowledge of eternal peace in Heaven with Our Loving Father.
And these things are a blessing and a gift that we don’t deserve but are freely available when we accept Jesus Christ into our lives.
    Great message. 🙏🙏❤️ ❤

I was given "How to Win Friends and Influence People" as a teenager and it was 0% effective. Years later I tried some cognitive behavioral strategies and it immediately went laughably wrong.
What helped me were the affirmations from Jesus and John that the world is evil, hates me, and is not for me. That knowledge defeated the gaslighting and struggle I had so long been suffering. God's children are foreigners in this wicked world and have a perfect kingdom we are part of -- the affairs of this world are no concern of ours. What a relief!
In fact it's a blessing and an honor to be universally hated and outcast by the god and people of this wicked world.

I was told in self help groups that I needed to truly feel and embody that I deserved my good, with problem after problem the only answer I ever got was that I wasn't feeling deserving. Upon coming to Jesus Christ I am free from that, he is the deserving one, through him I am free because of him I am saved. I can do no thing of myself, I could never be enough without him! Now I know because I abide in him and he in me! Hallelujah. Amen.

My impression of self improvement books has always been that the ultimate goal of the writer was to sell books....not help others. Most of these books take the same principles and rename, then repackage them and promote...promote....promote.
What we used to call SNAKE OIL. In this day and age there is a snake oil salesman around every corner.

Yes brother… you are fulfilling God’s will for your life. I know because I thirst for truth in a world that is filled with deception. When I find truth I feel like one finding water in a dry desert. I feel revived and refreshed with hope and faith in God. You keep doing what you are doing and you will be like a a lemonade stand in the middle of the desert.

I read many books also on this topic but i like how you explained it. “Once you have it now what?” I was still not fulfilled until something happened in my life and i turned all that energy to God and reading His Word. Thats has been the only thing that has helped me and brought me peace. Thank you for a great message!🙏

There's the old pragmatic saying, "God helps those who help themselves." But when you think about it, this is not really a Christian saying. It's a humanistic one. But it is also the core principle for most of these self-help books. That said, I'm ashamed to admit that I've wasted a lot of time and energy, not to mention money, on these types of books over the years.

I find myself constantly listening to/watching videos (like this one) almost every possible moment i can. But i dont read the Bible even half as much. These types of videos about the bible and Christ are great. But they're becoming an idol for me over the actual word of God. I do struggle with reading as far as retention and concentration. But on the other hand, i really dont want to "force" myself to read the bible. I want it to come from a true place of desire. My prayer life has been mostly just thanking God for EVERYTHING. That's something that has really been a blessing. I just thank God for everything and acknowledge that all things good come from him. Praying for a naturally increased desire to read His word. Its a fine line for me between religious works vs sincere dedication and love

"Selfhelp book" there is the problem- if we could have helped ourselves then Jesus wouldn't have come to die for our sins. The Bible also teaches us to deny ourselves. Matt, I want to share what happened to me these last 2 days. So we had a little WhatsApp group (6 people) who all claimed to be Christian's and where doing some Bible studies and talked about certain things like, love, forgiveness, temptation etc. And I was totally shocked at what so called Christian's beleive about Jesus. You did a video about the most shocking thing you came accross in the church. I just experienced the most shocking thing in a Bible study group!!! These "Christian's " beleive that Jesus had to repent of his sins and where therefore the first individual to be born again and the second thing is the we ( the people) had to forgive Jesus for what He has done to us !!!! Like for example the bad things happening in their lives. I left the group heartbroken, shocked and couldn't beleive how they blaspheme against Jesus. How can He who new no sin repent of what? And it is not Jesus fault if your life is in chaos because you never had any time for Christ in your life at all. It just made me realize again that not everyone who confesses Jesus with their mouth is a true believer!

Great message, Matt! Yes, self is the focus. Self-help materials, although may have some tips to help in this life, they are like the fig tree Jesus cursed in Matthew 20. Fig trees start with early small figs before any leaves show up. By the time the leaves are full, figs are usually ripe. So when Jesus saw a fig tree full of leaves, he went to it thinking there was fruit. But there were no figs, so he cursed the tree so that it withered. This happened after the religious leaders wanted Him to rebuke the children praising Him as Lord. With the fig tree, one of the things Jesus meant was the religious leaders looked glorious on the outside, but on the inside their was no fruit, no life. They didn't believe he was the Messiah. It's similar with self help books. Looks great at first, but on closer inspection, there is no fruit, no life as a result of using them.
John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
Praise and glory to God for his love, mercy, grace, fulfillment and eternal life!❤🙏

The whole point of the way of Jesus is to die to self. This is what most people miss. They think they can adopt Jesus like some talisman which helps them to continue in their way while somehow reaching the goal of eternal life even though they are still on their selfish ways which lead to destruction.
When I truly repented and gave up my life to Jesus I found it to be very liberating. Since I have laid down my life, gave up all my rights and since I libe with the perspective of eternity, I do not need to achieve anything any more since I already have everything in Jesus. When I truly repented I said to Jesus: "OK, I am done. You could literally just come back, now. However, let's see what we can do in this age together." I do not need to prove anything to others nor to myself. Furthermore, I do not need to pursue any of those worldly goals. That is so liberating and giving peace. The whole perspective changes if you begin to live in the perspective of eternity. What are those things mattering in this short time?
When someone is rootet in Christ, he is filled from the inside. This is another secret which most christians seem to know in their minds but unfortunately only few experience this. When I am filled from the inside, I do not need to seek to be filled from the outside. I do not need consumption of any kind any more (food, smoking, buying), I do not need to travel or to experience different things, I do not need sex or substitutes thereof, I do not need hobbies or a lot of things. This is freedom.

I bought books on how to get closer to the Lord. How to walk in faith and so on. Some of these books I’m sure are helpful. But after years of searching I found closeness with the Lord by waiting on Him. You grow, my opinion, from faith to faith but you never are done. When we are with Him then we will be complete.
