    I don't think Longines needs to catch or even compete with Omega. Honestly, I don't think, in most people's eyes, can match the cache Omega has in the overall watch market. However, that doesn't matter to me. Longines has its own lane to ride in and it's one that it does very well in a variety of ways. I've been pretty satisfied and most interested in their vintage reissues. They excel at bringing the past back to the modern market and it doesn't cost that much, relatively speaking, to get into those and the brand's catalog overall.

      Regarding design, Longine has more models that I like.
      And on design, I never liked "the wave" on the seamaster.
      In some ways Omega annoyes me: The milking of the 007 franchise, all the anniversary releases, and the 111 versions of the speedmaster is just....silly at least.
      That said, the railmaster is comming this way.

      @khronokraze 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @simonlauridsen4825 yeah, I've also never been a fan of wavy dials. If I had to choose, I actually like the older wave dials, sort of what they've returned to with the newer no date models. The waves are more subtle. I actually don't like the new TAG Heuer Aquaracers.with them, also. I prefer the older dial with the straight horizontals. Going back to Omega. They are going to continue doing what they are doing. I don't mind choices and variety.. be it a lot are around either the Speedmaster or Seamaster. I just pick which I like the most and casually take note of everything else.

      @simonlauridsen4825 and, yeah.. I find I like the variety of model designs Longines offers over Omega. I don't know them all, but, from what I know and have seen between the 2 brands, Longines are easier to entertain a purchase over Omega, for me.

    I think Swatch group looks at the relationship between Longines and Omega like Rolex looks at the relationship between Rolex and Tudor. Just like Tudor is the "shield" for Rolex against lower tier watches, Longines is the "shield" for Omega against lower tier watch brands.

  • @lamentate07
    @lamentate07 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    Longines do offer a lot for the money at their level. The Zulu Time and Big Eye have beautifully detailed dials, and I'd say the BE rivals the Speedy dial and arguably exceeds it in some ways, and the quality of the pushers is basically equal, but Omega's case designs and finishing are far superior to Longines and create a more elevated look that they simply cannot match.
    Re: brand perception. It's important to mention that Longines have a very different reputation in Asia than they do in the Anglosphere. In places like America they are seen as an upmarket mall watch that is heavily discounted, but in Asia they have more prestige as a luxury offering.

  • @TheBarts27
    @TheBarts27 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    Longines should catch up with Tudor or pass them by. Longines has the quality for it. Tudor is still ahead imho but longines is catching up. Longines feels less luxurious then Tudor imho but Longines has the better models/heritage. Longines should pay a little bit more attention to details. The devil is in the details. For instance; the Ultra Chron is a great watch but the dial is too busy imho. The dial on the Big Eye is perfect. The branding is great on that watch. The Big eye could use a see through caseback and the Ultra Chron shoud have a lume pip on the seconds hand. Just my two cents.

    • @lamentate07
      @lamentate07 20 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Longines are more like Seiko than Tudor. They cater for all different kinds of buyers, and this hurts the general perception as a luxury brand. As for them being less 'luxurious', I guess it depends on what you are comparing. They have more 'elegant' looking pieces overall I'd say due to their dressier leanings, but the build quality of their more recent watches is hard to deny. You mentioned Big Eye, which is a great one. The titanium version is really well done and punches a little above its weight in terms of overall design and features. But you are also right that many of their watches are lacking one or two important features to provide a greater sense of completeness.

  • @lamaludwig1470

    Can Tudor Catch Rolex? Same question. I think most people who buy Longines (or Tudor) are not only getting a lot of watch for the money, but they've already reached high on the shelf in their own terms. And Swatchgroup knows that, too. It's simply another part of the market for the most part.

    A great question Bruce but personally I think Longines should be assessed on its own merits. They have really upped there game over the last years and from my experience have finishing on some models that rivals Omega and others beyond its price point. Omega has the co-axial escapement that no other mass producer currently has where Longines has exclusive use of arguably specific ETA movements in some models as you mention. The Swatch group are a very shrewd bunch who will watch (no pun intended) the market but as you mention will push Omega as the high end mass produced brand but may indeed lift Longines higher as it seems to me anyway what they have achieved over recent years anyway.

    Longines has really upped its game recently and, historically, before the merger, it was at least the equal of Omega. Unfortunately, it will not be allowed to 'catch' Omega while both brands are owned by Swatch. Swatch has a pretty well defined hierarchy - helping the company to cover all market segments - and Longines is certainly lower in that pecking order than Omega.

    The crazy thing is that the brand markets the watches as washable, *in a watching machine* but they're only have a *3 bar* rating. 30m!!! That is usually described as splash proof/okay to wash hands.

    In order for Longines to catch Omega, they'd have to sell over double their average annual QTY of watches (1.6m units in 2023 vs 560k units from Omega) as their sales value was 1.1b CHF Compared to Omegas 2.6b CHF (Swiss Francs). The average Omega sales price was just over $6k compared with $1.1k from Longines. The only way for Longines to catch up would be to at least double their avg sales price per unit, then grow their unit volume by over 40% and do all of this hoping Omega don't grow more at the same time. Omega also has James Bond and the moon Landings to keep driving new customers to the brand. Longjnes is still considered a Shopping Mall brand in many countries, despite their recent improvement in models and technology to make them a more desirable brand. I think what the Swatch Group is going for with Longines is to use them to take on Tudor and let Omega stay as the brand to take on Rolex. That's why I feel Longines is only getting movements developed for them from ETA and Omega is moving to have all their movements in-house
    A quick side note, I did hear a rumor that Longines was to be the brand to take on Rolex, but Swatch went with Omega as they felt that Omega would be easier to pronounce for English speakers. I have no idea if this is true though

    The Swatch group has deliberately placed Longines below Omega in the hierarchy of brands.If they were ever equal they would be too expensive for many people to buy.That being said when you look at it from the perspective of the wearing of the watch by the consumer,how it looks and functions,its utilitarian and esthetic function makes it only a miniscule amount below Omega ,not even noticeable in daily usage.

    Longines hasn’t been a fully functional watchmaker in decades and is now just a parts-bin Swatch brand with no R&D department of their own. The accomplishments of the past belong to a company that no longer exists. If Swatch decided to slap a Longines logo on an Aqua Terra or Speedmaster competitor nothing is stopping them other than the hit Omega would take from one division cannibalizing sales from another. VW learned this lesson when it attempted to blur lines with their Audi brand with the disastrous Phaeton. If anything, I’d expect swatch to start cutting brands soon as the market shrinks further. It’s already hard enough for consumers to distinguish between them and they should be looking to simplify and differentiate their brands rather than overlapping them.

    No. I was really impressed by the legend diver 39 from online pics and based on the specs with the new clasp. I went to buy one a few days ago and was disappointed with the bracelet, which felt a bit cheap. I also tried on an Aqua Terra, but ended up walking out with an IWC pilot mark xx.

      You walked out with a watch that has a simple printed dial and punches well below its price point? Yeah the bracelet is nice, no doubt.

    • @Mike-dg9ib
      @Mike-dg9ib 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @lamentate07 it's got enough lume for my requirements. My main thing is clasp quick adjust because it's hot where I live, and a decent power reserve. The bracelet is better than anything in the price range, including Rolex surprisingly, and the case finishing is much better than I expected. I felt it was much higher quality than the Omegas. And I got 20% discount. So all in all, I'm very happy lol

    • @lamentate07
      @lamentate07 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Mike-dg9ib Yeah it shits on Omega's bracelets. I bought the Aqua Terra (blue teak) instead of the XX, but that was mostly because of the dial and case design. The bracelet is mediocre.
      20% off is a great deal. I'd buy it at that price. Well done!

    Unless Longines can change the design cues to many of their offerings and offer a genuine in house movement with complications, I don't see them catching Omega anytime soon. I am unsure why so many watch influencers seem to be pushing Longines so hard in the last year or so, they are still offering the same very long lugged cases by and enlarge that just don't wear well on the wrist. Options like the spirit titanium with its crazy long lugs or the majatek that wears like a brick, Its a shame as the quality in what they produce is definitely there and Longines do appear to be taking some customer feedback in with the release of the new hydroconquest which is a big improvement on the older model.

    Longines (and Tissot) were both below the level they should be, but now they are perfectly placed in Swatch group portfolio. Longines does not play the game of Omega, but it's rather a Tudor competitor (and to me there's no competition, Longines wins by a margin). Omega is a Rolex competitor, and it would not make sense for Swatch Group to have two Rolex competitors. By the Way--- Longines is not entry level Luxury, that title should go to Tissot, they have some watches that have all the charachteristics to be called Luxury - Longines is rather "mid" Luxury with its current positioning.

    the value for the designs, history, and quality is already very good. I certainly hope they continue to steward & evolve their line as well as they've demonstrated lately, but selfishly, there's not much risk-reward reason to try & keep clawing 'up-market' to where O is...

  • @PilotRyanHarb

    First of all longines is good. But this comparison has no meaning whatsoever. Since both are in the swatch group, this comparison is meaningless. Also, Longines can never match the heritage of Omega. If Omega puts snoopy on a dial made out of cardboard it will sell and be a waiting list watch. We need to stop with these comparisons.

    • @lamentate07
      @lamentate07 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Look into Longines' history a bit more. They have a richer heritage than Omega, but Omega overtook them at a crucial point before the Quartz Crisis almost killed them both. Longines used to make their own movements and they were some of their best for their respective time periods.
