Wonderful episode. Overwhelmed with happiness to see such a learned dalit mind get time on media. I'm sure the oppressors unable to process these arguments are busting a gut to come up with a reply. I'm a second generation educated dalit. I'm proud to belong to this community, I will work towards its upliftment once I finish my studies. P.s. kudos to suraj.

When I see so many atrocities on dalits and still their non revenge attitude, it inspires me a lot. As a Muslim, I feel my community is also marginalised in India. Still we had never a problem of social identity. We have been accepted by masses as an individual. But dalits have suffered a lot for thousands of years. Even when you people act so generously and articulate you in the most liberal way, it is legacy of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. I salute his wisdom and truthful attitude. You are the real liberators.

Historically, dalits in India have enjoyed the privileges like any other community in India. The Reddys in south have history of being rulers. Karna was a ruler with shudra identity. It was and is always a number game. Since Mohammed understood it early on, he asked every Muslim to have more kids and go around converting. Even Surya here, wants to rewrite history from dalit perspective and not to establish equality.

Neither manu or Vedas say that brahmins r going to rule the world, which means ppl who achieve brilliance thru disciplined way of life. Whatever said by Suraj Yengde is 100 percent true. He missed one point that the dalits, obcs and the adivasis were the ardent followers of buddhism in ancient times. If u read ancient history there was always a clash between ajivikism(makkala gosali), Jainism( mahaveer Jain), buddhism ( Buddha) and brahminism(Aryans). Indian history changes drastically at the rise of mauryan empire and one king who shines among all in the India and the world was the " Asoka" the beloved of God. He followed buddhism and made buddhism so popular that buddhism was the major religion of India at the time of mauryan rule. Brahminism was losing it's supremacy due to buddhism. History again changes after the assasination of Brehadrat maurya the last mauryan king. From 100 Bc to 200 Ad between the Manusmriti is composed. Purushasukta which is later interpolated in rig Veda. Between this period the intermixing of people stopped in India according to recent dna study. Before Everyone were intermixing and marrying with other communities. The history of India totally changes after 200 Ad. Coz India starts getting invaded by many outsiders. Till then the only migration to india were the steppe pastoralist i.e, the Aryans (yamnaya people). Final conclusion is that it was always the fight between the Harrapans and the Aryans. The 85 percent of the present population are the harrapans, who are called as bahujans. Hindu word came to known at the entry of Persians and moghul Invaders. If you read all the vedas, puranas, Ramayan and mahabharat you will not find the word Hindu, you will only find Varna. Manusmriti is a systematic and organised loot & plunder of the aboriginal Indians by suppresing & oppressing the basic rights by stripping education, wealth and making them slaves by prohibiting them of keeping weapons with the help of other outsider Invaders. Thus the shudra and ati-shudra i.e,(sc,st&obc) became backward caste, once who were forward of all in world i.e, the Harrrapan civilization. Why shudra and ati-shudras were not allowed in temple is because there is Buddha statue in all the major ancient famous temples in India.

Where did you learn all this garbage from, idiot school of communists - "Brahminism" there is nothing like this, it is one of the Varnas. Aryans are Brahmins, another garbage. Buddhism was initiated by Gautam Buddha aka Siddharta who was Hindu/Sanatan Dharma Prince, and all its philosophy is extension of Vedenata/ Uttar Mimansa, So, buddhism is very close to one of the darshana of Hindutva. "Till then the only migration to india were the steppe pastoralist i.e, the Aryans (yamnaya people)", there were no Aryans who came from outside India, no proof, no evidence. There is only evidemce of people going outside during ancient bharat, Aryan Migration/Invasion Theory is demolished already. If you can prove it you will get Rs 2 Crores, if you cite any western source, they do not have any acceptable proof, just words. "Final conclusion is that it was always the fight between the Harrapans and the Aryans." -- where did you read this garbage from .. lol "The 85 percent of the present population are the harrapans, who are called as bahujans." .. lol another garbage.. If you keep on reading and telling these stories, you will always be slave to western colonialist and slave in your country. Read the facts and enlighten yourself. "Why shudra and ati-shudras were not allowed in temple is because there is Buddha statue in all the major ancient famous temples in India." -- lol.. another garbage. Hi Faye:
Please ask Dr. Yengde or other intellectual guests next time:
How can someone who was born in supposedly upper (criminal) castes, like me, participate in the getting other privileged caste members realize/enlighten about the reality of this Brahmanical oppression?
I am asking this because I have tried establishing all kinds of discourses. I have found that unless someone opens up their minds and hearts, there is no way to achieve this. I know it’s a long process, but any kind of change needs real efforts. Because I am not as well read about this and can’t give up my day job for this, I also feel ill-equipped to make any headway’s in this quest of mine.
    Thanks 😊

Many others have answered this- we need to have the privileged caste persons have a mobilised movement to educate other members of the privileged castes. I think we need to have awareness and sensitisation campaigns to educate the privileged castes and not put that burden on DBA folks. Privileged caste academics need to analyse the casteism and Brahminical patriarchy in privileged caste communities, instead of talking about DBA folks and their stories. I also think that we should agitate to include Ambedkar, Savitribhai Phule and other Dalit scholars as mandatory reading from the primary school level to the college level.

I think it would be great to do a session on "Who is a Dalit?" - that will reveal so much about what it means to be an Ati-shudra and why the creation of the Dalit identity is inextricably linked to the policing of women's sexuality and rigid social stratification (and the new versions of this segregation that persists in modern India). I think there are still a lot of people who actually do not understand the caste system or the relevance of caste in a capitalistic society, the differences in the Gandhi vs. Ambedkar understanding of caste, the meaning and origin of the term 'Ati-Shudra', the link between social capital and caste, and so much more. Also there aren't enough nuanced conversations that aim to dehomogenize SC identities. People often pool SC, OBC and ST communities' together - it would be great to delve into the differences in their access to entitlements/rights and lived realities. Emphasizing the larger system within which caste-based oppression has been normalized would be a key building block towards ensuring that people recognize their own privilege.

I agree to the speaker in most matters. But if we want allies outside of our own, we cannot approach them with contempt. Referring to people as belonging to oppressor castes is a good idea but the term criminal caste is going too far. The term criminal has an inherent judgement of connivance in crime. By that yard stick, that girl who spoke to Dr. Yengde after his speech at IIT or NLU would be a labelled as his criminal ally, which doesn't serve our purpose. She clearly had a good conscience which is what the movement has to utilise in its favour. I hope you can get this thought across to Dr Yengde the next time you speak with him.

For the ones who argue "what about the financially affluent section from Scheduled caste enjoying reservation and financially poor forward caste not getting a same opportunity"
First understand that the reservation is not poverty allevation scheme but an affirmative action. For a long time all the available opportunities were taken up by stronger sections of the society and the weaker section was totally denied, which had created a situation where 3% population enjoying 97% opportunities.
Now reservation is a system which provides a guaranteed opportunity to the oppressed, which in a long term should balance the equation.

      1. They are withholding the benefits of reservations from people of their own community. The loss is suffered by their own people, not the so called 'upper caste'.
      2. So long as the well educated and financially stable people in these communities do not stand up and assert equality, so long as they feel that despite their education and wealth, they are incompetent and 'oppressed', they can never be considered as 'equal'. Equality needs to be asserted and demonstrated, not demanded.
Even some people in these communities asserting equality and stating that they are now able to compete with anyone in their field and giving up reservations for themselves and their future generations is what will truly assert equality.

There are many scheduled castes ...Dalits are one of them...along with a long list of tribals ...since this has a reference to the Dalit class of the scheduled caste ...she is referring to them as Dalits...I don't think she means to disrespect the constitution.

Before all that known first-ever freedom fighters there was Baba Tilka Majhi an Adivasi who initiated a freedom fight against the British in the year 1784 around 70 years before Mangal Pandey. Sidhu Murmu and Kanhu Murmu led the great rebellion of Santali Hul against the British in the year 1855 in which 30000 adivasi were martyred which Indian historians never mentioned.
