    Why does this swap use flywheel and clutch?

    • @dissrepair
      @dissrepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The motor utilizes the conventional transmission and can be driven in a single gear or shifted manually. Check out the driving video in this link

      A conventional clutch with an aluminium alloy flywheel sounds like a recipe for a rather short life.

      No need to use the clutch though, so possibly will not slip.

    Electric motor armature shafts are usually not rated for much of a thrust load. I wonder if the roller bearings in the electric motor have a high enough thrust rating for the thrust applied when the clutch is applied and released.

    @demotors070161 is there a thrust bearing built into the hyper9? I imagine there will be some axial force when depressing the clutch, and I don't see any thrust bearings externally in the set up. Wondering if this has been an issue for you and this build at all?

    1:30 You damaged the bearings hammering the shaft. NEVER EVER use a hammer on bearings. The inner and outer rings get markings (damage) of the balls by the axial force applied.

      @@PatrickFitzgerald-ge2hw I didn't solve it yet, although I did find that the groove for the key was not clean and had to be filed for the key to fit correctly. Going to try again this weekend with heat. If that doesn't work I'm going to see about having it pressed in by a machine shop. Hope you have better luck.

      Too much to be a cool way to get a old bug with no engine back on the road because buying a new engine is cheaper. You could probably buy a new engine and trans for the price of the EV motor.

    I really don't think that output shaft adapter needs to fit that tightly on the motor shaft. I've worked with all sorts of industrial couplings (which is essentially what that is) and they just slide on.

    • @jonn7877
      @jonn7877 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He could have heater the adapter then it would have slipped on to the motor shaft. That's the way I did it with my Hyper9 motor and it worked well.

    • @willieshaw2522
      @willieshaw2522 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Chucks Garage" Usually electric motor couplings only have to transmit rotational torque through them. They typically use a Lovejoy coupler to take care of minor alignment issues. That adapter will also see the rotational load and any imbalance of the clutch and flywheel, and the thrust load from the throw-out bearing when applying the clutch. IMO it needs to be an interference fit.
