    Our potbelly pig is 3 years old, weighs 220 pounds, lives upstairs, eats downstairs, has a huge loving personality, has destroyed the daughters room and a very, very, very expensive table and the carpeting, is super flexible about meals, activities and time tables, is potty trained, (but he chose the spot not what we preferred), has never screamed unless squeezed, and quietly "talks" (grunts) to say hello, hungry, pee, walk, etc. We learned the meaning of his grunts. As soon as someone gets back from school, work, trip, etc he does cry loudly exactly like a baby till that person goes upstairs to say hello. Will "talk" a long time upon first greeting in morning even will sit down because the talk is long. He follows our verbal commands quite well, but not si much when we are not around. Knows how to open refrigerator & pantry but has only done so 1 time and never again. Literally calls my daughter/owner "Mama" when scared (vacuum cleaner, storms) and runs to her.

    Hello,my name is Steve and I run an animal rescue in San Diego CA. I wanted to thank you for making this very honest video about what these awesome animals are. I have 4 in rescue at this time because people had no idea what they were getting in to with a pig. Your explanation of what these animals are like is right on the money and I shared this video to my rescue pages. I work with a lot of different species like you do, most being reptiles and other exotics, but I try to never say no to any pet in need if at all possible.

I'd love a mini pig but I live in a small house in Florida with not a big yard at all. So I don't think sadly it would out well. THANK YOU for sharing this info!!! When people think "mini pig" they think it's going to be the size of a toy dog or something, not realizing that it's mini COMPARED TO A REGULAR FARM HOG! I like Julianas just for the simple fact that they are an actual breed and thus have breed standards - no taller than 19" at the shoulder and no more than 60 lbs. Still a good-sized pig, but waaaaayyyyy smaller than their pot bellied counterparts!

  • @3ittybittypiggiesstorytime547
    @3ittybittypiggiesstorytime547 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Love your Petunia! My Petunia is 5 years old and a little smaller. She's a Juliana and just a bit darker with similar genetic build. I still pick her up when needed (80-90 lb). She prefers not to be picked up but is snuggly and loves scratching, petting and rubbing and being talked to/with. Mini pigs come in 3 Healthy adult (5 year+) size categories: Small, under 100 lbs, Medium, 100+ lb range, Large, 200-300+ lb range. Genetics and feeding determine that final size. Never starve or gorge your mini pigs! Your Petunia looks great, healthy and happy.

    I hsve a mini pig , he is obsesed with pencils. He wants to esy them doesn't matter if your in the middle of using it or it's just in his sight. Then it's time to play tug of war to try to get what's left back. Soda bottles or any mastic bottle he feels needs to be used for piggy nose soccer. He's very quick to claim what he feels should be or rather is his in his mind any way.
    He does go in his create and has learned to shut and lock himself inside. For his wanted quite time or when he wants to sleep. Thankfully he's yet to figure out how to unlock it. I really enjoyed hearing and learning more about your mini pig. Thanks for sharing.

Do the research you need to be sure you can have them and provide well for them. Adults are not smaller than the one in the video. You saw the pictures though, that pig was teacup size once

      @@HappyTailsAnimals That's why Juliana's would be my top choice if and when I were to get a pet pig. They're small for pigs, but a more easily managed size than the larger Kune Kune's, which I would love to have a few some day. If I went with full size farm pigs, I would want a few Glouchester Old Spots thanks to the book "When Pigs Fly" (I think that's it's name).

    @caponsacchi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    One of the very best discussions of pigs you'll find. Thank you, Petunia! This goes beyond anything you'll hear from a breeder and his photos of piglets in doll's clothes. It's an honest, detailed introduction that gets to the complexity of these animals with their human-like intelligence.
    Don't purchase one of these smart, emotional, sensitive animals unless you're able to commit time to it every day. Tolerate but don't yield to its childish tantrums, set a firm example, treat it with love and respect--and it will reward you in kind--one of the best companions ever. But be forewarned: It's estimated that as many as 90% of mini-pig owners "dispose" of their pet in the first year. Please don't inflict the same cruelty on your pet.
    Don't buy a "piglet," or you'll have a pet that's good for 3 months. Instead, purchase a "child" who can double its size one month, and triple the next. And if it exceeds 50 pounds by the end of the first year, that's "normal." Please don't contribute to the exploitation, abuse and mass suffering of these animals. And think twice about encouraging breeders who: 1. have the "fun" of playing with newborn piglets; 2. reap the profits of selling them at 2-3 months of age.

    Thank you for enlightening us
    We always thought a mini pig maxed out at about 10 to 15 pounds, not such an appealing option for a house pet anymore.

    I was working at a small exotic petshop sweeping the floor when the owners pet pig ripped the stores door off of it's hinges to come inside & get attention
    Pigs are fun

    Thank you very much for this fantastic informational video. After watching this, I have come to realize that we are not in the right position yet to give one a home and saving the pig and us unnecessary heartaches.

    I always thought minipigs were large animals but just smaller than regular pigs. My suspicion is confirmed haha.

    Im glad I watched your video. Ive been looking into a pig and after watching your video I know it wont be a good fit in our home. I know owning a pet is a life long commitment so I would never rush into bringing any animal home yet along a pig. I would love to rescue one but you describing the lip smacking and sounds made me chuckle. I don't mind it but my partner goes nuts with those sounds.. so that is a deal breaker.. thank you for such an informative video!

    I've got a Potbelly pig that is in the 150-200 lbs range and is around 5yrs old... she's a good critter...
    They make really good pets...
    I've also got fairly large collection of North American Pit Vipers mostly different species of Rattlesnakes along with some Copperheads...
