Legit had this happen but with a dog. He was supposed to be a small Chihuahua but ended up being a collie mix. Soo BIG difference in personality and size. Still love and have him :3

I don't think anyone should just dumb off an animal but if you can't handle the animal after a while for God sake surrender it to a no kill shelter it's just better for the animal to have an owner who can keep up with it's needs

I have a Juliana, Potbelly mix. He's about 2 now. I adopted him after his owners couldn't care for him anymore. I want to tell people that they can he destructive. I know you have talked about that in previous videos, but people need to understand that they love to root. They will root your floors. Mine are my linoleum flooring. They also love to scratch their backs. Their legs don't reach, so they can destroy molding or knock over light tables just getting their scratch on. My pig is about 100 pounds now, and he's not done growing. He used to love my children, but now he prefers to not be around them as much. Crate training is amazing for your indoor pig. However, if you don't have room for a ginormous crate that's going to be hard. My pig loves his crate, and it's his safe place. A crate is not a replacement for outside time or attention, but if you are not watching your indoor pig, and you do not want things messed with, it's a helpful tool in keeping your pig out of trouble. Just want people to not think pigs are super easy!!!

Also, even adult pigs scream. It's awful, but I do ignore.

It's small wonder that buyers fall in love with these animals. Nothing is cuter and more irresistible than a piglet between 8 and 12 weeks. They're funny, they're energetic, they're exceptionally smart--they're immediately litter trainable and will follow you whereever you go because as prey animals they see you as their "herd leader," as someone who provides protection, comfort (lots of blankets and a safe place of its own), and of course food. Because they're so adorable, this is the most "dangerous" time between pig and owner. Many owners submit to their piglet's charm and spoil it with food every time it "asks," and some owners even take piggy to bed with them (where the piglet soon learns to "root" on a soft part of the owner's flesh as though it were nursing with its mom).
It's a better bet to set firm examples from the start--about where and when to eat and where and when to sleep. The pig can be praised for good behavior and ignored (but never punished) for bad. And it can be rewarded with low-fat small treats for performing tricks like sit, stay, bow, spin (left, then right) in response to vocal commands. Consistency is what counts. A pig who is not fed on time will let the owner know about it--whether through squealing or knocking down a computer or pulling out the drawer full of clothing. Pigs are creatures of routine and habit, so be careful what patterns you choose for your pet to follow. Everything you're shown in this video is on the money--so pay special heed to each step, beginning with the business about zoning laws before submitting to the urge to buy.
And equally as important as zoning laws is the availability of a VET who will treat pigs. They can be few and far between. I didn't find one in my first five calls, and finally was referred to a livestock vet 40 miles away from me. If that's a serious factor in your schedule, your time, your transportation abilities, maybe it would be better to look for a more conventional animal. And since the ultimate size and weight of a pig can be so unpredictable, you should consider the type of vehicle you have. A coupe or sedan could prove impractical for an older, larger pig. And even an SUV is no guarantee that the pig will climb on board (fortunately, most do, especially with some treat incentives. And once in the vehicle, most pigs really enjoy riding. It makes them feel like they're part of the family's regular activities, which is what they crave.)
Finally, a controversial statement. Most pigs are exceptionally smart and "selfish" animals. They won't do anything they don't want to do. Most don't immediately give the sort of "unconditional love" as dogs do. The owner must be creative, coming up with ways to make the pig think that any desired action or response is the pig's, not the owner's, idea. Before performing any action, a pig will be thinking: "Now, what's in this for ME?" In many respects, they're like 2-3 year-old human children. They know what they like--what tastes good, feels good, and is fun to do. Child psychologists call this the "narcissist" stage of development, before the child has learned how to exercise restraint, to postpone self-gratification, and to empathize with others. Just as a child in its "terrible twos" can be hard to please, so can your pig. They're born "problem-solvers," and when you're the one who is the obstacle to their pleasure, don't be surprised if the pig begins working on YOU to respond to its demands. Be firm, remain cool, walk away if necessary. Allowing a pig to see for itself the outcome of bad behavior--namely, that it will exclude itself from its family (even if that's only you)--is always more effective than a more direct form of punishment.
Of course, there are exceptions to all the generalizations about animals as intelligent as pigs (without speed or fighting skills, it relies on its wits for survival). If a pig proves super-resistant to taking to a leash, let it go, no big deal. It deserves some small victories in this ongoing transaction between animal and human, or between the pig's desire for more freedom and the owner's for better behavior. A pig's love of community is so strong that, in some instances, I've seen it take priority over food incentives: in other words, the pig would rather earn the owner's praise and acceptance than receive a food treat! (But don't count on it.)

I love your pig videos! I know a pig is not for me at this time, but I hope someday. But I'm loving hearing about people's pet pig realities... and what to expect, the differences between mini breeds and the like. I wish I could find a mini pig sanctuary to volunteer and and meet these guys in person to get a better handle on what they're like. But I plan on buying goods from pig rescues/sanctuaries and/or donating to help the little piggers out soon.

Great video! we met a pig w/owner at the large nearby farm-feed-pet store, where we go and bring our dog along (black lab mix); Yeah, so there was this guy and he had his pig on a leash, it was small .. about the size of medium terrier. He insisted that it's a special breed that it will NOT get any bigger; in fact, the pig was quite a few years old! His pig and our dog hit it off wonderfully right away! I would like to know what kind of pig that might have been? I love pigs so much .. would like to have one. Thnx for the informative vid', will chck out the others. ... Oink

I thought that I had a mini pig. Turns out they are both razor backs/wild hogs. Jojo is mine and she never leaves me alone. Benny has been spade but he acts like a wild boar. When they were in the sheep pen , they brought down and killed the most aggressive ram in the paddock. Now we don't have any sheep because it's too dangerous for them.

    • @pokemon9oct
      @pokemon9oct 7 ปีที่แล้ว

she has done a video on both of those animals. But just a little advice I have, chinchillas and guinea pigs both need to be kept in pairs. and both have completely different life styles. chinchillas need large tall cages (such as Critter nations) whilst guinea pigs need cages with a lot of floor space.
their diets are as far apart as it can be as well, guinea pigs need fruit and veg and hay. whereas chinchillas need hay and special chinchilla food, they cannot eat fruit or veg. I would say research as much as possible before getting your new pet!

You can never get ripped off with an animal. If you think of it that way, your not ready for a pet :)

But what breed are mini pigs really? Are they potbellied pigs? Because if i get a pig i want to go to a trustworthy place where the breeder tells me the actual breed and not that it's a mini pig.

No. Spay your pig no matter what. There are health reasons to do so....its not just for behavioral reasons....

Animals with all their organs are actually healthier. Stay up to date with new research.

The only thing I did not care for about this video is that you said, "...register your pig as an emotional support animal..."
I just don't like that you said register. I know that you are a service dog handler and you know there is no such thing as legal registration for ESAs or service dogs.
