Great to see it's being saved these old transits are pure gold! Many years ago i drove one from a company i used to work. They told me after a year they where going to start changing the car park i could even choose, so i told them i would love to stick to the ford and i could for another 6 years great memories coming up seeing this!
After that job i also worked at carglass they drove one old transit van front wheel drive and i just loved it as well
Later i worked as a cab driver in a newer model transit it was easier to shift i got to admit that, but still it had this raw sound while flooring it and kinda the same trusted feelings while driving,
I would pick a transit over a MAN / crafter / whatever any time

The fact that the engines still run after years of sitting around doing nothing shows alot of quality in those old transit motors.

just found your channel Colin , love the old transits , we've had heaps of them over the years and my old man drove them as ambulances for donkeys years starting with a mk1 V4 petrol that even from brand new would need arms like Schwarzenegger to change gear in ! i currently have an 04' mk6 crew cab tipper , giving it the works for the MOT at the moment , plenty of hidden rust on the rear crossmembers , sills , arches and drivers step , its mechanically perfect apart from rust and would pull a mountain , i believe the newer ones ( 09' onwards ) are complete rubbish so im gonna keep this old girl going for as long as i can . big love from Ireland .

Love too see this transit back on the road slowly fading off the scene. these for me was the best of the transits grew up around the mk4s give her the make over she deserves .👍

Always had a soft spot for transits, always had them as my work vans. Started off with a proper R reg rust bucket when I was 17 then a 52 plate Mk6, 53 plate Mk6, 61 plate Mk7, 60 plate Mk7, 65 plate mk8 and now I'm in a 70 plate mk8.

I don’t usually watch videos fully, especially not long ones, but this was so worth it! Laughed a lot, those transits last forever! Glad to hear you still have the Renault 25, hugely rare car in the UK now, will be worth much more than when you got it 2 years ago!

@@shineautomotive Had a Renault 25 Monaco years ago into which I fitted the 2.1 diesel engine and transaxle that had been fitted previously to an 18 estate, Fuego 2L GTXA and a 21 estate. The 2l petrols that they replaced went like the proverbialoff a shovel but you couldn't keep them in petrol lol. Straight bolt in swap and the electrics were plug and play. Ignition module unplugged from the bulkhead and the glow module plugged straight in.

Love that engine noise. My father had a mk3 13ft pickup for 15 years. Cried the day he sold it in 2012. Been looking for it ever since to surprise him with it but I think it may be gone for good. Reg was G203RMY just in case anyone might know of it :)

The 90s ford transit is a British classic peace of history it would be absolutely amazing if you transformed it in to a recovery truck from the 90s that would be so cool.

RAC had loads of Smiley 2.5TD's and have seen few campers with the same engine as well. The Smiley came up a treat after a wash.

@@shineautomotive anyone thinking of a transporter conversion on a Transit or similar, work out what you plan to carry on it before diving into the work, and how you will keep the weight down. back in the day these and similar vehicles were used to circumvent the 3500GVM tachograph rules. even a chassis cab like this, from memory weighs close to 2000kgs. add another 500ish for even an alloy body, ramps and winch leaves you with a tonne legally. in car form, all but the very lightest mk4 (1996 onwards) Ford Fiesta would weigh that, which would leave you with no weight left for ANYTHING. its why you dont see many of them around built on Transit bodies now. the risks and fines are too high for being caught overweight, plus the powers that be all know that weight is very limited so pull in such vans. the way around is to up plate them and use a tachograph, but then you might as well use a stronger, better suited 7.5 tonne vehicle to begin with

I used to have a Transit 2.5Di 1989 on a G reg, it got nicked by a pair of professional thieves back in August 1999 I had upgraded it a lot & it was the best van I had ever owned.
I bet you was absolutely gutted I can’t stand things like this

I agree a build series on the mk5 would be good id suggest raptor lining and wax oiling the inner arches and bed for future protection keep up the good work 👍🏼👍🏼
I would maybe raptor underneath the cab but not the chassis I believe that still needs to stay a smooth finish

All car people love the old di s. Ive got a lwb turbo mk5 van. And a swb 25 di mk3 pickup. The mk3 i am busy making rear hanger boxes because you carnt get them. Your turbo sounds nice and fit and they are well worth fixing. Good luck lads.

recovery trucks on Transit bodies are pretty much pointless nowadays though as most cars weigh far too much to be legally carried on them. from memory even just a Chassis cab with single cab weighs 2 tonnes+ which means you have to build/buy a body, all the kit you want (winch, lights etc) get it all on and see what it weighs. unless you are carrying something like a Classic Mini, almost anything will take you over the 3500kgs weight limit for avoiding a Tachgraph, which was why so many transits were used in the past! even something like a mk4 Fiesta (1996 on) will weigh around a tonne in its lightest (car) form, plus the weight of the transporter body, weight of the vehicle passengers, and you are soon over legal weight. thats why so many of the 'scrap' collectors now dont even run them (or similar) as the risks of being caught overweight far outweigh what they would make on the 'scrap'
@@petelattimer6808 couldn’t do anything but disagree with you entirely on that, I have a mk4 transit recovery that weighs 2.1 ton empty with half a tank of fuel and me, can carry a fair few different cars now with a payload of 1400kg.
@@petelattimer6808 these kind of transporters atleast in holland and germany. Are 4500kg versions put on 3500kg papers. Doesnt matter wich brand. Mb, VW.

great that is mate, ive got a smiley recovery non turbo 'for now', i dont work it i just love it i use it to pick up my classics 3 or 4 times a year. cant beat them, engines are solid like a barge, i just sit and listen to it sometimes, be good to see the progress, have a good 2022 all the best, jon

The spark plugs were probably seized shut. Just replace the spark filters & run some super unleaded through the upper tank valves & it'll start no bother

Hey up my mates, I searched transit restorations many month’s ago and there’s only a hand full out there. It would be a fantastic build. Why don’t you set it as as Lewis’s project for his apprenticeship at college. I’m sure the shine family would back/fund that for his apprenticeship/collage project. Another good video, thanks, the Mk6 is undoubtedly the better drive but you can't beat the reliability of the Mk5 Smiley which brings back fond memories of my old beavertail and having to shout at passengers to be heard, i hope you get time to sort out both, it would be nice to see some tuning on the Mk5 turbo as a useful 120 - 130 bhp or so isn't too difficult to achieve apparently.

Best vans ever made. I had a 1999 transit turbo. They were really bad for the fly by wire playing up. My fly by wire stopped working and i replaced it with a manual pump and pedal. good vid mate.
I know they were terrible but for this to survive and still be working I’m thinking do I convert it to manual pump or is it worth more in its original work in operation. Welcome to the channel if you’re new

Can’t beat the old smily transit, I would still run one if I could find a clean one mk6 is decent as well, I’m stuck with the mk7 i think it’s made of chocolate, definitely up for the transit videos 🤙
Yeah the mk sevens didn’t seem to do very well with the engines but I think a mk 7 front end on the six would look good
@@shineautomotive oh yeah they definitely look smarter, you can do the dash swap as well with a set of transit custom sports seats to finish it off nicely then when you get board you can stick a bmw 330d engine in it there’s loads been done now it’s quite easy, there’s a Facebook page called transit m57s or something like that

Collin when I saw what you were going to attempt I wouldn’t have believed it possible, in the state it was in, you could get any life into that Transit but you kept at it and at it and at it and when it spluttered into life, well I was amazed you and Sam and the lad achieved the impossible, wonderful. It just shows you a bit of faith and tenacity you can achieve anything!!! I hope you get the rest sorted out as you deserve to do well for what you give us Shine followers. A mk5 transit will always fire straight into life no matter how long there sat very reliable engines the 2.5 dis mk6 transits however 🙈
You sure do love your Mk3s, seen more than a few in Scotland while in Lithuania they're almost extinct. Good job bringing that truck up to life - back when they were made better, especially the engines
