No matter how bad the gear is you always manage to squeeze a banging tune out of it. Proof that its not the gear that matters, a great musician works with what they've got.
Oh definately, back in the 90s a friend of mine had a "triphop" portishead style act, that he ran out of a 1970s era CASIO keyboard run through a bunch of guitar pedals, a korg drum machine , as well as a bassist and a girl with an utterly stunning voice on vocals. They'd pack clubs, and people where so in love with them, they'd literally bring gifts for them to gigs. Good gear helps, but solid creativity can let you still pull bangers out of the most cheesy gear.
pulled the trigger on a used streichfett. I love it so much, probably because it doesn't work like a normal synth. You just dial in a flavor of sound you like, add some modulation and boom, there you are. It can do electric organ like sounds (Vox Continental, Farfisa Compact) or go full cheese mode. the reverb is insanely noisy but it isn't a problem in a mix. i ADORE the autopanning "tremolo"). Love this thing. Thank you Florian for introducing me to it!
Didn't expect this one to show up in bad gear. To me Streichfett offers usable sounds and a well designed UI for a reasonable price. Rating: good gear, recommended.

I have played a good bit with various string machine emulators and even got the Behringer's VC340 to get closer to "the real thing" and the thing about vintage string machines is they are often way more impressive to listen to, then they are to play. They are kind of a one trick pony, usually having one or two good, full sounds but the other sounds feel just like a cut down version of those good ones. And there is probably a bunch of bands from the 80s who have used that one good sound to death, so don't expect to sound original ;) For that reason even if Streichfett doesn't sound exactly like the analogs, for me it actually wins on tweakability. Damn....That thing sounds 100 X better than I thought it would. And I'm a BIG fan of the Rocket and Two-Pole.....Waldorf did a really good job with that underrated product line.
@@AudioPilz Makes me think they should try a "Mark 2" version of the line. (Even though I HATE "Mark 2" editions. It's like a big F.U to those who bought the originals) ...Y'know...Make the Two-Pole stereo, give The Rocket a proper attack knob....
Pick up a Streichfett if you can. I always think I'll use it one way on a track, and then it ends up surprising me with something fresh and unexpected.
Hey I got one of these! Mostly wanted something dedicated to pad/drone FX and it does those really nicely so, job well done for that. I wasn't looking for any specific vintage sound, just wanted the little loops and bleeps I sometimes throw together for effects assets and bgm to be a bit more filled out. It's definitely not an all purpose device, but I don't think I'll regret getting it.
Waldorf is one brand that seems to know what it is doing when it comes to defining what a synth should sound like as an instrument. My ego brain says- give me a synth with infinite capability and I'll figure out how to get the sound I want. While the rest of my brain says- just give me instruments that sound good. Then they get into a big argument about the best way to get the sound of acoustic instruments while I glitch out imagining I'm firing sparks from inside a Tesla coil. Waldorf's products are definitely innovative and their outside the box designs fetching the prices they do is probably a good indication of their value. When I'm ready to get back into synthesizers, and get my brain melded with a new piece of gear, I'm hoping for a Studiologic Sledge 2.0 which has a Waldorf sound engine.
I'd complain that you didn't get nearly nerdy enough, but the Stringers are almost an endless history lesson with regards to music, electrical engineering, and culture. Seriously, if you're even slightly electrically aligned, reading about how divide-down synthesis works, and why these digital and analog approximations rarely ever sound right... it's a fascinating journey, leading me to start collect these divide-down oscillation devices. Alas, since the Italians never were known for their build quality, many of these units may never be repaired again. I have an Elka Rhapsody that has a shorted out transformer, and a crumar (branded Univox when sold domestically in the states, amusingly enough) that has a few bad chips. All unfortunately unobtanium, leaving me as one of the few curators of their magnificent legacy on the history of music. Probably a little pretentious. I just like Tangerine Dream 🤣
@@AudioPilz HAH! I forgot to finish my thought. The Crumar is a Compac Piano. Not a string synth, but basically a super thin, pinky sounding synth not unlike a Nintendo or something. Edgar Winter is most famous for using it, with many advertisements in magazines at the time featuring him and his Crumar. It's not a great synth, honestly, but they're still able to be had for less than $300. Loved your jams with the Streichfett though! Very inspiring, hearing those sounds used on something you wouldn't dig out of your granddad's record collection hahaha.
This synth nerds is the reality. As lustful as these old stringers might appear, pushing up a fake demand (prices) these units do fail. I repaired one recently, was lucky and found a chip replacement. It's easy to have a non-working (and un-repairable item) - check on ebay, people selling non-working, "for parts only" - units where many of the unobtainable parts have been salvaged.
i actually bought one of these a couple years ago, and immediately loved the fact that is IS somewhat thin... after buying so many full-sounding synths, very quickly realized they can muddy up a mix a little TOO easily, and this waldorf is just perfect for highlighting a melodic line that's in danger of disappearing in an otherwise great mix (yes, i tend to mix a little hot, downside of a background in sludge). bought it for the strings, largely use it for the solo.
Curious about your video editing since it's so much better than the last season of Rick and Morty, do you do it all alone? And please tell me you are having fun since your videos are so rich with to me at least hilarious humor.. Again, kudos to you for putting a smile on my face every time I see a new thumbnail of Bad Gear popping up on my youtube on sad and boring days!
@@AudioPilz it takes me back to 2008/9 when half the videos on TH-cam were like this and weren’t churned out daily 👍 big respect, I know too-well the ritual of editing a 10 minute video for 6 hours, just getting things frame perfect and synched to the music. Great content as always. As a writer, I am just curious if you are so natural in writing such fat-free, concise voiceover or if you actually write the first draft and then build points/reduce it to the final version. (And if the delivery efficiency is a conscious decision in the whole process?) Frankly, when I want to see a thorough review I will watch Loopop if I want a deep dive into the sonic abilities of a machine I will watch Starsky, but I watch you mainly because of how well-written and executed your content is. Big fan here, wish you the best in the future.
Thank you so much!!! I have a background in business training, presentation and classical theatre - that helps a bit. There are some corrections but I try to nail it in the first draft.
I always had kind of a soft spot for these, I am so glad that I eventually got one. The Streichfett may be really cheesy, but as you all know: In the end everything is a lot better with cheese.
I enjoyed that, I will endeavour to seek one out and treat myself. Your tracks also inspired me to listen to some vintage J M Jarre, life is good again. Thanks!
Waiting so long for B's 'Solina' replica, I bought this and I'm glad. Epic sound everywhere and instantly. It does what it does well alone, plus a synth section! Bonus 👍 I will buying B's aforementioned version too. Just love that sound 🙂
I found one of those Eminent organs with the string section in it in a thrift shop a few years back, When I came back a day later with transport to pick it up all the knobs sliders and tabs on it were gone 😞.
shiiiit, i didn't even know this existed! i just knew of captain vrungl and that was one of my favourites from my childhood. so imagine my surprise at seeing the same animation style but from a cartoon i didn't yet know
I thought it sounded decent but once you turned up the reverb i was blown away! Especially in the jams, they were very nice! Also, i laughed way more than i should to the image at 5:15
I played in a band for some time where my main keyboard was the wonderful ARP Solina String Synthesizer, a rare bit of kit that combines the legendary string machine with the ARP Explorer 1 mono synth. It allowed to put the strings through the LP filter which produced the sweetest phasing sound with a fair amount of dirt if you pushed it hard enough. It might be a bit of a one trick pony but people can’t seem to get enough of the stuff.
Another quality bad gear episode brilliant. The streichfett sounds great and really gives a good string/organ mix I would consider getting one but only because my eminent 310 takes up so much space I’m the studio.. or perhaps not… I can’t stand my minimoog on a streichfett 👍☢️
A person located in the USA can always order from a place like Thomann. The savings can offset the shipping considerably and the price for this dude converted to US dollars is below the threshold for duty fees. Similar for the Blofeld desktop.
I own one and love it. The strings section has some great sweet spots. With a short envelope, I got really unique bass sounds, good for d&b, which one wouldn't necessarily associate with a string machine.

I enjoyed it quite a bit
I love mine. When I got it, the first cord just gave the biggest smile.
Cool!!!
Damn....That thing sounds 100 X better than I thought it would. And I'm a BIG fan of the Rocket and Two-Pole.....Waldorf did a really good job with that underrated product line.
Agreed, not like the originals but nice sounds
@@AudioPilz Makes me think they should try a "Mark 2" version of the line. (Even though I HATE "Mark 2" editions. It's like a big F.U to those who bought the originals) ...Y'know...Make the Two-Pole stereo, give The Rocket a proper attack knob....
Pick up a Streichfett if you can. I always think I'll use it one way on a track, and then it ends up surprising me with something fresh and unexpected.
@@inthefade After hearing this, I just may do that. I always assumed it wasn't for me.
And...yet another HIT VIDEO! Good work.
Thanks!
Agreed, great for drones!
I love this little synth. It has so much character.
😀
Your brief histories of synths and other gear are awesome. More please!
Thank you!!!
Thanks for this! I look forward towards your videos every week 😎
Thanks for watching!
Спасибо за доктора Ливси! Ты - лучший )
Всегда приятно
Jarre's face (happy birthday, btw) popping up for split second was pure gold!
😀😀😀
I really want a Sledge too!!!
Damn, this is your best video yet!
Thank you so much!
Nice collection!!!
I have a Crumar Performer sitting in its case in the closet. It needs to be fixed but I'll probably never do it but I don't want to sell it, either.
I recall that Waldorf did go the extra length to emulate the divide-down synthesis on this machine.
i actually bought one of these a couple years ago, and immediately loved the fact that is IS somewhat thin... after buying so many full-sounding synths, very quickly realized they can muddy up a mix a little TOO easily, and this waldorf is just perfect for highlighting a melodic line that's in danger of disappearing in an otherwise great mix (yes, i tend to mix a little hot, downside of a background in sludge). bought it for the strings, largely use it for the solo.
Works great in a mix, agreed!
Thank you so much!!! Yes, that's all done by myself and yeah, I'm having tons of fun...
@@AudioPilz it takes me back to 2008/9 when half the videos on TH-cam were like this and weren’t churned out daily 👍 big respect, I know too-well the ritual of editing a 10 minute video for 6 hours, just getting things frame perfect and synched to the music. (Though by the end of my time I could get that to half or less.)
🤔 Wait-- IS the entire intro tune a metaphor??
...Oh man, I've NEVER been this late to a Bad Gear upload (argh...life), only to find the most beautifully esoteric vocoder shout-out ever! 🤯 Thank you, kind sir!
No worries, thanks Rocco!
I've seen a lot of videos on synthesizers and Equipment but you are so underrated I don't know why I didn't subscribe to you earlier keep up the good work good content
Thank you so much! Stick around!
@@AudioPilz You have a great talent, putting your skills to use, for these videos. Your fun personality, brings sunshine to any subject.
So much pausing for memes in your videos man🤣 they are all spot on and perfect
Thank you!!!
I always had kind of a soft spot for these, I am so glad that I eventually got one.
The Streichfett may be really cheesy, but as you all know: In the end everything is a lot better with cheese.
Mmmmh, cheese...
Admittedly that thing sounds way cooler than I expected
It surprised me too
I Don't Think I'd Buy One Of These But You Made It Sound Great In Your Demo Tracks . I Will Always Love This Channel . Thanks And Best Wishes Always .
Thank you so much!
I enjoyed that, I will endeavour to seek one out and treat myself. Your tracks also inspired me to listen to some vintage J M Jarre, life is good again. Thanks!
Have a nice weekend!!!
wow, respect for Teasure Island
The OG Gigachad!!!
The clap sync at 9:13 in the finale is transcendent 👏
Thank you!!!
great video as always ! tbh i really liked the sound but against VSTs or other string machines i doubt it fights the (US) price
Thanks! Yeah, the $ price is quite hefty
Your references are so inteligent. The one of Uli as Mr. Crowley is deep
Thank you!!!
Waiting so long for B's 'Solina' replica, I bought this and I'm glad. Epic sound everywhere and instantly. It does what it does well alone, plus a synth section! Bonus 👍 I will buying B's aforementioned version too. Just love that sound 🙂
Yeah, sometimes you just have to get both;)
I found one of those Eminent organs with the string section in it in a thrift shop a few years back, When I came back a day later with transport to pick it up all the knobs sliders and tabs on it were gone 😞.
😥😥😥
О, Остров Сокровищ! Как же я люблю Bad Gear
Спасибо большое!!!

shiiiit, i didn't even know this existed! i just knew of captain vrungl and that was one of my favourites from my childhood. so imagine my surprise at seeing the same animation style but from a cartoon i didn't yet know
@ there are third one made in the same style 'Доктор Айболит'.
I liked the editing. Good content.
Thank you!!!
Behringer has now made a clone of the solina string ensemble
Honestly the 359 is worth it for the FX alone the phaser sounds 🤌🤌🤌
Yeah, that one is really tempting!
I think my uncle may have the arp version of the solina string ensemble he does have yamaha cs80 korg ms20 mini moog and an Roland mc9
And korg ms2000 a korg x911 yamaha fb01 akai s6000 and casio fz1 sampler
And has yet to make the bcr32
Hey! Thanks for doing this YT channel!
Love it
Thank you so much!!!
I thought it sounded decent but once you turned up the reverb i was blown away! Especially in the jams, they were very nice!
Also, i laughed way more than i should to the image at 5:15
Thank you!!!
Nice one!!!
I have two Streichfett's. I use one in each speaker.
Nice technique!!!
Excellent finale BTW!
Thanks!
Another quality bad gear episode brilliant.
The streichfett sounds great and really gives a good string/organ mix I would consider getting one but only because my eminent 310 takes up so much space I’m the studio.. or perhaps not… I can’t stand my minimoog on a streichfett 👍☢️
Thanks! Lol, Minimoog on a 310;)
A person located in the USA can always order from a place like Thomann. The savings can offset the shipping considerably and the price for this dude converted to US dollars is below the threshold for duty fees. Similar for the Blofeld desktop.
Great idea!
I own one and love it. The strings section has some great sweet spots. With a short envelope, I got really unique bass sounds, good for d&b, which one wouldn't necessarily associate with a string machine.
Yeah, it's surprisingly modern-sounding
"Available October 2046"
Mic drop, Florian. Congratulations, once again you totally killed it. 👍
Bonus points for pronouncing "Streichfett" as only an Austrian with a familiar (but not *too* familiar) erm...um..."familiarity" mit Deutsch could do.
I don't know how you do it, buddy, but each time you drop a new video, YOU re - set the bar higher.
I still can't wait for someone to loan you a Roland MV-8000 or MV-8800, an Alesis Fusion, an ESQ-1, a Casio CZ-5000, any of the MeeBlip synths, TASCAM Celesonic, the MOTU 828 mkii, the Behringer ADA8000 / ADA8200, the RME Digiface USB, the iConnectivity Mio devices, the Novation Supernovas/Novas (not Mininova and Ultranova), the V-Synth, the Virus Snow, and the MicroStation (unless you've already done them and I've forgotten - you've covered so much ground that it's hard to remember all of your great reviews).
Either way, keep it up Florian. You're moving into "legend" territory. 🙏
Thank you so much!!! Great suggestions!
Oooof, now that is one gorgeous-sounding piece of gear: hadn't heard of this one!
😀
Sehr gelungen, wie immer.
Deine Videos sind sehr durchdacht, gut aufgebaut, äußerst interessant, informativ und musikalisch top.

I think you have reviewed everything I own as bad gear. I love it. I look forward to the next!
😀😀😀Congrats!!!
Finally the Streichfett! Thank you!
😀😀😀
One more sensational episode, superb editing skills and tempo. By the way, buyed a WS brand new unit a year ago and i'm happy with it.
Thank you!!!
Enjoying your "Bad Gear" reviews so much, I had to subscribe.
You make learning about these things, so much fun.
Thanks, and best wishes for your continued success.
Thank you so much!!!
I like that in-depth history walkthrough a lot. Thanks. You could do it often :)
Thank you!!!
Great episode, I was fascinated by it upon its release but actually never saw it in action. I appreciated the history and German lesson as well ;)
Thank you!!!
Jam 2 was giving me some Jean-Michel Jarre vibes. Didn't know if anyone else thought this. Great episode as always! :D
Thanks!!! Yeah, I was listening to some Oxygene recently;)
@@AudioPilz I actually have been as well. It was pretty fresh in my memory haha
Superb as always!
Thank you!!!
The Streichfett is my the most favorite synth. You did a really great job to find flaws in it but even you video make it shine. Except for the price in US probably, $500 is a bit too much even for this gem.
Thank you! Yeah, US prices are weird
It's on sale for 350 now
You are a freaking International Treasure. Never, ever change.
Thank you so much!!!
Great video, the striechfett is a great machine, definitely not bad at all at creating that classic 70’s & 80’s sound.
Thank you!!!
The keys on your Oxygen8 look somewhat like my 54 year old teeth after half a dozen bong hits. That controller can legitimately be called wintage at this point. :) Love your vids! They make my Fridays.
Thank you!!! That Oxygen has seen things;)
Again, the music meme-lord made me laugh out loud with the VP-03 meme! How timely. . . I just watched the Behringer SOLINA video earlier this week.
😀Ah, the BOLINA!!!
I have a mostly-working Korg Delta. That's a string machine + synth, using divide-down technology. I really must get around to completing it
Nice one!!!
While I don't see the appeal for the "classic use case" (given that string libraries are a thing now), the alternative use you showed first was _awesome!_
Thank you, great episode again!
Thanks for watching!
I'm shocked at how good this sounds! Now I'm suddenly tempted to scoop up the one I saw cheap 👀👀
Certainly worth a try!
