In contrast, those that used the city buses that went ever 30 minutes where constantly late because to them missing 30 minutes was not a big deal, if I missed mine I missed 4 hours of school.

      Best destination for the ferry would be Warroad, MN, on the south side of the lake, population about a thousand. Not sure if that's enough of a market to cover the operating costs. But the general store is probably a good idea: just get a bunch of stuff at whatever Canadian version of Walmart is nearest, and sell it locally for double the price.

    • @mattsmocs3281
      @mattsmocs3281 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Alexey Vlasenko yes the store can too be located near the largest population center on in the northwest. For the ferry it would not need to cross Canada and can move at good speed the only down side is the first infrastructure needed. But the cost would pay in fuel savings and country crossing

It's not as if an officer is actively checking vehicles or passengers. If they were smuggling anything it wouldn't change much, seems like a waste of their time really. I visited the NWA back in 2009 on a cycling tour, and there's really nothing closer. The NWA is bounded on three sides (North, East and South) by water and thousands of square miles of nothing. To the West, there's Canada, but it's all wilderness. Literally, the nearest shopping is South, but you can't go directly South (due to the aforementioned water); you have to go West, first, skirt the water, and then South to the U.S./Canada border. The Customs agents that you voluntarily contact by satellite phone at Jim's Corner had a bit of trouble with me, because they wanted a vehicle license plate number, which I didn't have (being on a pedal-powered touring tricycle).

So, they have to call the Canadian government for permission to cross their border. I think that's pretty cool to show respect to Canada and Canada is pretty cool for letting them. You don't need a passport if your driving to Canada and live in the states along the border. Those states issue enhanced driver's licenses that you can use. They do cost more than a regular license, at least in Michigan. Had to visit a Secretary of State office with my birth certificate and social security card and was interviewed to verify my identity. This license acts as a form of appropriate ID for border crossings between Canada and Mexico by land. Of course you can still use a passport or the newer passport card.

    I live in Italy 40 mins to the border with Switzerland (which is not part of the EU, mind you) and, as strict as Swiss people are known to be, sometimes nobody is at the customs to check who and what's entering or leaving the state, and even if there is somebody he would just ask for your ID, nod at you and let you go most of the time. There are even some people from my place that go to Switzerland every morning to work (as the salaries are way better there, especially considering the value change) and then come back in Italy in the evening to live the rest of the day here. On Saturday there is a market in the city center in my place and it's plenty of Swiss people coming with the train from Switzerland (1 hour ride one way) just to chill here as if they're going to the mall. And even the most remote places across both of the borders have at least a grocery, a school, a pharmacy and a postal office for the few people living in the area so that nobody has to waste hours of their time every week for the basic needs.
    That situation at "The Angle" is insane.

    While those 60 or so intrepid US citizens are really cool, there's another place where you have to travel through Canada to get to the United States, but it's also a little more involved. It's Point Roberts in Washington state. Established in 1846, Point Roberts is a town of over 1300 residents, situated on a small peninsula south of the 49th parallel, which constitutes the US-Canadian border. They have a small primary school, but every student 4th grade or higher is bussed through Canada, around Boundary Bay (approximately 26 miles) to Blaine, Washington to attend school. They have their own zip code and post office. Currently, Glen Hanlon, retired hockey player and Kekuta Manneh, soccer player for the Vancouver Whitecaps are notable residents of Point Roberts - Manneh (a Gambian who was adopted by an American couple) in order to maintain US residency in order to become a citizen.
    These two American oddity places are rather interesting.

      Travelers are legally required to check in with the USBP and CBSA when they go. If caught, they can be denied entry into Canada, which would wreck their livelihood. CBSA rules on who can cross the border are incredibly strict.

      I don't think you understand. If they do not inform the border patrol agencies on both sides and are caught, they can be deported from Canada and barred from reentry. The reason they check in is so that they can continue to live where they are.

    The fish dispute was settled when the US threatened to stop allowing Canadian trains through in retaliation. The main East-West Canadian railroad line cuts through a corner of the USA. You let us fish, we let your trains use the short cut! Tracks skirt the South edge of the lake, Baudette to Warroad. North of the lake there are just so many little lakes there is no easy East West path for a train.
    Canadian Campobello island has a bridge to the US but only a ferry to Canada.

      Actually, leaving the USA to Canada is not the problem. The problem comes if you are pulled over in Canada for something unrelated, or when entering the USA and encounter border patrols who have no record of you leaving the USA. Also, some difficulties may arise when crossing over the waters at times. If you're legal, have a passport and such though, it used to be that normally just causes a bit of inconvenience and delay. Today however it's hard to tell what new state/federal laws pop in and out of existence almost daily.

      But I was a sucker. Everyone gets a cut of you, and there's no guarantees you get a cut at all. Bad days outnumbered the good in the long run.
