John Landis was asked by MJ to direct this video. He was MJ's 1st choice because he loved American Werewolf in London, who was directed by John.
Yup American werewolf in London was his favorite. It’s crazy this 13 min vid has the most scariest zombies I’ve seen. The production on this is unmatched.

Rod Temperton was a master songwriter! MJ did it good. This whole album was everywhere in 1983!
He put that disclaimer in the beginning of the film due to him being one of Jehovah’s Witnesses at the time. They made a big stink about him incorporating werewolf’s and zombies.

The final zombie in the video is renown makeup artist Greg Cannom. Rick Baker is the zombie that comes out of the crypt.

many folks don't realize that that very last zombie they show (on the screen right when you said that) -- that's actually the INCOMPARABLE MR. VINCENT PRICE (the man who does the narration/spoken-sequence -- "darkness falls across the land. the midnight hour is close at hand..." -- AND the famous laugh at the end of the song when it plays on the radio/album/cd). michael included him in the video as well, fully made up as a zombie, lol. ~ b.
I was at the Pop Culture museum in Seattle a few years ago, and they have a huge screen with seating in the open, and they ran this video. I hadn’t seen it in a long time. It was wild.

When I was in elementary school this had to have been 96/97 MTV & VH1 would play Michael Jackson mvs and behind the scene making the videos marathons on his birthday and stuff. I remember just watching ALL DAY. They would also show the The Jackson's The American Dream movie

My friend was a Broadway actor and got a part as one of the zombies.
The backround dancers are all, or in other words every single one of them, has been chosen by Michael Jackson himself. Michael himself said he's not on another level when it comes to his dancing.
He was a Jehovah's Witness at the time,that's why he put that statement up before the video.
I have a replica of the thriller jacket and everytime I wear it in public i always get stopped. People be like thats the MJ jacket 😅 caught two girls watch me a time with the jacket and started to dance like MJ in the middle of the road literally😂
I watched the PREMIERE of this video. I had to go to my friend's house because we didn't have cable at the time and therefore didn't have MTV. I'm dating myself, but I am proud of the fact that I saw the very first airing of this. To this day, I think it's the best music video ever made, or at least the most impactful.
9:50 The Way You Make Me Feel is probably my favorite song and video of his. The concept hasn't aged well (stalking) but I absolutely love it. And the song shows off his voice so well!

Looking back, I actually think it's ironic that MJ put the message at the beginning, because people are A LOT more uptight and easily offended today in 2024 than we were at that time. But he did that because he's a devout Jahovas witness.
one thing that i only noticed after watching the video a few times is that the zombies actually use their shoes as percussion.
so not only do they have to do the steps correctly. their timing needs to be perfect otherwise it sounds terrible.
Yes, I was going to comment that myself although I know this is an old reaction I just found it I just wanted to add that not only did he put the disclaimer if he hadn’t, which was his attorneys idea John Branca he wasn’t going to air it sometimes lawyers can be useful😜. We would all have missed this if he didn’t give him that idea.
