  • Captain Edward Teague,[6] played by Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones,[7] is Jack's father who was also formerly the pirate lord of Madagascar, before he became keeper of the code. He first appeared in At World's End.
    Teague was once the most feared pirate in the world and as such receives respect and fear from all of the pirates in the Brethren Court. At one point Teague was the Pirate Lord of Madagascar but later resigned to become the Keeper of the Pirate Code, the Pirata Codex, which he keeps with him at Shipwreck Cove.

    “The Code is the Law.”
    The way Teague delivers that line makes the code sound almost sacred. It sounds like he’s the last of a different era of pirates. One that held itself to a higher standard rather than just the selfish cut throats that populate the seas today.

    • @mrreyes5004
      @mrreyes5004 ปีที่แล้ว +605

      That oddly makes a lot of sense when you look at the Pirate Codex itself. It is oddly well-written and intricately put together, despite the fact that it was authored by cutthroat marauders. Just really gives the impression that Teague and other ancient pirates, such as Morgan and Bartholomew themselves, were a whole different caliber of savvy criminals. It also goes hand-in-hand with what Barbossa said about how it was better when pirates conquered the seas with their own sweat and blood, instead of cheap backroom deals with business lords and sea spirits.

      @@averageplayers5288 well it's like this; This meeting of the Brethren court was for deciding what measures to take against Davy Jones. Jack and Elizabeth were the only two who wanted to fight back, but the rest of the pirates wanted to stay put. Instead of voting for himself like every other person in that room, at the end Jack voted for Elizabeth; thus making her have more votes (2) than any other person in the room. This is a perfect example of "show, don't tell". It's never explicitly stated that Captain Teague is Jack's father, though the resemblance is hard to miss. Jack never calls him "dad" in this film, he simply speaks to him as though he's known him all his life, and asks "how's mum?". It's very subtle, and perfectly suited to a character like Jack Sparrow.

    “It’s not just about living forever, Jackie. The trick is living with _yourself_ forever.”
    I absolutely LOVE this line because it’s a perfect foil to Jack’s overarching plot. Jack seeks immortality as a means of survival, and in PotC, immortality is not hard to accomplish. The problem is, immortality _always_ comes with a high price, to the point where all the immortal characters in the series want nothing more than to be rid of it.
    Therefore, Teague’s quote is both a solution and a warning. He’s telling Jack that the key to life is a life _worth_ living, regardless of its finality; that Jack must be comfortable with who he is and what he’s done. Immortality will keep you alive, but will twist you into something that isn’t worth living as. Barbossa, Davy Jones, and Salazar can all attest to the price they paid for immortality. Teague is subtly telling Jack that he must be sure he can live with what he becomes because he’ll have to live with it forever.

    The amazing thing is how accurate this is. Traditionally, pirates really were a democratic society. Even captains were elected officials. In most pirate crews, the Captain was elected by popular vote, and the captain then appointed the other officers. The officers assigned work schedules, and the entire crew got equal shares of the profits, with the captain and the officers getting higher shares, due to the added work it took to run the overall ship.
    However, captains were usually not absolutely authorities. All major decisions were brought to a vote, and the captain usually only took full control in times of combat or other emergency situations which called for a central authority.

      @@CorriganM08 You can learn it pirate diaries and by reading the surviving pirate's codes. I made a university paper about it. It's very interesting, pirates were not "savages and animals" as many people thinks. Pirates were breaking their contacts and loyalties to their former nations, but even then, they needed to build a "society" and a "state" inside the ship so it could work properly. That's where the captain power, his oficials and the Pirate's Code shows up. And as IvelLlehctim
      said, captains power were restricted, it was more in war situations, and they didn't have any special treatment, at least at the begining of the pirate golden age.
      In some ways, pirates were very advanced to that time, in some Pirate's code were predicted elections of the captains, votes in diferents situations, equal share of the spoil, no skin colour diferences, free speech... Something that just reached Europe one century later with the French Revolution

    1:50 seeing as daddy is just as sharp as Jack, I think when he repeated the words ''Not likely'', he was giving Jack a clue on what the next move should be. Give his own vote to someone who has the closest interests to Jack's current interests. As we see, Jack is the one to call for a vote right off the bat.

Because the thing she has been studying since she was 10, all the books she has read and stories she’s heard, the way to live a life of a pirate is finally there, in front of her in plain black and white.
