The Mouth of Sauron

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 23 มิ.ย. 2012
  • Pippin:
    Where are they?
    Aragorn:
    Let the Lord of the Black Land come forth!
    Let justice be done upon him!
    Mouth:
    My master, Sauron the Great, bids thee welcome.
    Is there any in this rout with authority to treat with me?
    Gandalf:
    We do not come to treat with Sauron, faithless and accursed.
    Tell your master this:
    The armies of Mordor must disband.
    He is to depart these lands, never to return.
    Mouth:
    Old Greybeard.
    I have a token I was bidden to show thee.
    Pippin:
    Frodo.
    Merry:
    Frodo.
    Gandalf:
    Silence.
    Merry:
    No!
    Gandalf:
    Silence!
    Mouth:
    The Halfling was dear to thee, I see.
    Know that he suffered greatly at the hands of his host.
    Who would've thought one so small could endure so much pain?
    And he did, Gandalf. He did.
    And who is this? Isildur's heir?
    It takes more to make a king than a broken Elvish blade.
    Gimli:
    I guess that concludes negotiations.
    Aragorn:
    I do not believe it. I will not.
    (Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King)

    I remember hearing that the visual design choice of giving him an unnaturally large mouth and cracked lips with rotting teeth was based on the idea that even repeating Sauron's words had rotted his mouth simply because they were so evil. Love this depiction

    Love how Gandalf, despite being emotionally distraught, immediately catches Merry and Pippin's sympathy towards Frodo could absolutely screw everyone over right now. If Frodo is in fact not dead, and Sauron doesn't know his purpose, which is the case, then the Mouth is here to gain information about him, and it almost works. Imagine if they mentioned the Ring, Frodo's quest would be fucked.

      Aragorn was smart to not believe it too. After all, if Sauron really had captured Frodo and retook the ring, he would not bother wasting time with this "negotiation". He also wouldn't have sent the Mouth of Sauron. He would have come out himself, with the ring, and killed Aragorn where he stood. So the fact that Sauron was still acting cautious in this situation was a pretty good indicator that he didn't have the ring yet and I think Aragorn picked up on that.

    As detailed in other Tolkein writing, Gandalf plays this to perfection. He certainly fears for Frodo, yet carefully controls his reactions, desperately trying to control his friends' reactions so as to not give away anything to the Mouth: he wants to know if Sauron has the ring....... he allows the Mouth to gloat about Frodo, analysing what he hears. But he ends up knowing, after the exchange, that Sauron does not in fact have the ring, he knows that the Mouth and Sauron did not know Frodo was carrying it; and so he hopes in the possibility that somehow Frodo is alive and even more that the ring yet safe. He knows that the Mouth would have gloated over that had it been - the Mouth only gloats over torture and death of Frodo (which is not even true itself). The Mouth thinks the victory is simply emotional to have hurt a friend: the Mouth does not even know abut the ring! Gandalf is very smart with this scene.

    I don't know if someone mentioned this before, but I like how this scene plays out. As a Maiar, Gandalf takes charge of the negotiations and sets terms of surrender for Sauron with force and conviction. And even though he has no leverage, you can see how unbent his will is, how unwavering his speech and approach is. However, when the Mouth pulls out the ace in his sleeve with the Mithril, to lie about Frodo, Gandalf hesitates, filled with sorrow, like all of them. He tries to keep his cool and maintain face but it is visible how distraught he actually is. And then Aragorn steps in. The only one to keep his belief, he refuses to be goaded into grief, and presses on, in front of all of them, unbothered by what he had heard. Like a true leader, worthy of a king, he doesn't quiver when an obstacle is thrown in his path. Unimpressed by the Mouth and his insults, he doesn't hesitate to chop its head off like he would a minor orcish thug who has no value whatsoever. He will not be deterred by mere words or show of debatable proofs, being the only one from the group that keeps his hope in everything. That is what a true leader does, sets an example for the rest, carries on when all hope seems lost. It is a magnificent scene that marks the final step of Aragorn's transition into a full, authentic and noteworthy king.

      He pulls the same shit with Aragorn in the palantir scene. Aragorn pulls out the sword and Sauron reels back in fear, only to show Aragorn something of his own, a dead Arwen, which makes Aragorn so freaked out he drops the palantir and jumps physically backs away from it.

    • @thebiggestcauldron
      @thebiggestcauldron ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Aragorn's role as the one who believes and doesn't let his spirit down is important and makes him worthy of a leader. However, letting his emotions take over and impulsively killing a messenger is the opposite. He clearly let himself be triggered by Sauron. A leader should show not only stamina but also restraint. Aragorn clearly lacked the latter in this scene.

    Such a treacherous villain. Really gets into their heads. Gandalf had already felt guilty for sending Frodo and Sam to almost certain death and Sauron and then this villain really capitalize on that guilt. One of the only scenes I can remember where Gandalf seems defeated and is tearing up. “How such a small creature can endure so much pain. And he did Gandalf, he did…” And then Aragorn steps up to fulfill the leadership role Gandalf had held “I do not believe it. I can not!” It’s a compelling scene.

Sauron demands that the men and elves of the West must remove all troops from his borders and return to their smaller realms (Minas Tirith, the Meduseld, and Mirkwood) while giving Sauron command of the greater lands in exchange they get to keep their small fiefdoms but must pay tribute to him. Gandalf finds the demand overreaching and senses desperation. When the Mouth presents them with Frodo's Mithril shirt it catches them off guard, but Gandalf keeps his cool and demands to see that Frodo is indeed their prisoner. To this the Mouth winces at this request and then Gandalf in turn rejects Sauron's terms for a truce.

    Some fun facts about the Mouth of Sauron; the decision to make him look like this was made for the movie. In the books, he's just a mook in a full faced helmet but they changed it to imply that Sauron is so evil that merely speaking his will distorts the speaker's appearance. His mouth was supposed to appear sideways instead of cracked at first but that was scrapped when Jackson decided it would look a little bit too silly. His mouth was made digitally larger to give him a very uncanny valley appearance and it was even planned to have his helmet hooked into his mouth so he was always smiling unsettling. It was scrapped whilst in the early design stages because it made it impossible for Bruce Spence to actually move his mouth but Jackson liked the whole "high collar behind the cowl" look so that stayed.

    My jaw dropped when I saw the extended edition for the first time. Hes the closest thing to Sauron that we get to see because he has more of a personality than the witch king. His accent is also very interesting.

      I think that's true. Though another reasons I think he kept the faith is that he likely would have expected a servant of Sauron to gloat over regaining the ring, and the mouth of Sauron made no mention of Samwise. If Sauron had the ring, he'd have no reason to hide it as he'd be all-powerful once more. He'd use it to intimidate in this instance. Aragorn felt something was off about that. I feel as though the corruption the mouth spoke would have worked if not for that Numaneorian wisdom/foresight or something; thought as like you said, being a true friend probably made the fire burn stonger.

    I like how the Mouth of Sauron inadvertently gives away waaaaaaay too much information that allows Aragorn to discern that the plan hasn't failed.
    1) He never mentions Sam at all. Just that they caught a halfling with a mithril vest on. The Mouth exclusively only talks about the one hobbit they caught.
    2) No mention of the Ring. If the enemy had the Ring, they would've revealed that immediately.
    So for not saying anything about Sam and the Ring, Aragorn is able to figure out that Sam at the very least is still alive, and most likely has the Ring. So the plan can still succeed as long as they hold the line. This is also why Gandalf stops Merry and Pippin from talking.

    This is the one scene cut from the theatrical version of the film that still boggles me to this day. Without this, we never really get a physical confrontation with Sauron and the Fellowship in the films. This would have brought that reality much closer. Plus, this is such a well realized character from the books. In lieu of less critical elements like Tom Bombadil and the Scouring of the Shire, we should have gotten this at least. Makes the following scene and the line "For Frodo " all the more powerful.

    • @RandomAllen
      @RandomAllen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +231

      In the books, the scene with Shelob and Frodo being "killed" took place at the very end of Two Towers. They do not go back to Frodo or Sam until the end of Return of the King, so in books this scene is meant to make you think that Frodo is actually dead and it's a fakeout. Obliviously this doesn't work in the film because the Shelob scene happens parallel to the Battle of Minas Tirith and they constantly go back to focusing on Frodo and Sam throughout the film so you immediately know they aren't dead while in the books, Two Towers ends with Sam taking the ring and you don't find out that Frodo is actually alive until after this scene!

    • @RandomAllen
      @RandomAllen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Because the way they set up the scenes in the film, you already know Frodo is alive! So it makes it kind of unneeded. I like the scene but still, since they abridged it like how they did, it doesn't really make since in the context of the films to have it!

    • @sgtskysyndrome
      @sgtskysyndrome 8 ปีที่แล้ว +128

      Well the scene also serves the purpose of charging that final battle with emotion. The messenger bluffs, and the remaining fellowship thinks their last hope has failed. It makes them all prepared to take one final stand and die. That's how the line, "for Frodo" makes any sense. It's also why it's so awesome to see the tower fall and the tears in Gandalf's eyes. There is a moment where they didn't think they'd live to see this evil vanquished...all because of the Mouth.

  • @KneelB4Bacon
    @KneelB4Bacon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1909

    In the book, Tolkien goes away from the Frodo-Sam-Gollum storyline and doesn't come back to it for a couple of hundred pages until right after this scene. So if you were reading the book, you really wouldn't know at this point whether Frodo was alive or dead and a lot of the tension in this scene depends on that. And Tolkien does this a LOT in the trilogy. When he jumps from one story line to the next, you may have to go back a few days or even a few weeks to pick up where the story left off.
    Peter Jackson explained in the commentary that when they wrote the movie's screenplay, they had to re-organize all the timelines into chronological order. So now, when the Mouth of Sauron taunts them, we (the audience) know that Frodo is fine, because we just saw him escape from Shelob's lair about 10 minutes ago. It's still a cool scene but it was an easy scene to remove in editing because there's no danger to Frodo here.

    • @User-jo7jp
      @User-jo7jp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +110

      It's more of a repurposing of the focus of the scene. The characters stand in place of the reader. The curiosity or dread that we felt is now transposed onto Gandalf, Aragorn, and crew. All in all I'm glad they filmed this scene.

      As a fan of both the books and the movies, I am glad they kept this scene in the movie and it doesn’t matter that it doesn’t hold the same weight as it did in the book. For me the most powerful part of this scene is that they have every reason to loose hope and as far as they know there is none. Frodo is probably dead, Sauron will soon have the ring (if he doesn’t already) anything they do going forward is fraught. Despite all of this they choose to fight anyway. It hits me every time I watch it.

    • @mythhead2688
      @mythhead2688 5 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Despite the audience of the movies being fully aware that Frodo is still alive, this scene still manages to stir engaging frustration within the viewers when they see the antagonist create a misunderstanding to catch the rest of the fellowship off guard. The writing on his helmet translates to Lammen Gorthaur". It appears to be a translation which means "Voice of the Abhorred Dead". Which pretty literally means Mouth of Sauron. During the Second Age Sauron was called "Gorthaur". Another thing to add, the Mouth of Sauron had a defiled mouth due to him being a servant of Sauron and all the evil that would stem from his mouth. It corrupted his body. Kind of like how the One Ring corrupted Smeagol into Gollum

    This is my favorite deleted scene and the one I wish made it in the movie. “For Frodo” hits so much harder when you’ve seen this. As much as Aragorn says he doesn’t believe it, there is a chance Frodo is dead and there is no hope that they will win. But, if they should die, they will fight until the very end in his honor. Aragon rallying the Fellowship in Frodo’s name is so beautiful.

      @kevnwarriner8819 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      If Sauron had captured Frodo he would either have taken the Ring and he would have covered Middle Earth with a Second Darkness and destroyed Gondor and driven the Survivor's beyond the Great River, or Sam would have taken the Ring from Frodo before he was Captured and Frodo would have been tortured and the Orcs would be searching Mordor for Sam and the Ring because Gollum had told his torturers that he had possessed the Ring and who had it and where it was, so Sauron would know everything about the plan to destroy the Ring and that was why Frodo was in Mordor...

    I love the look of the Mouth of Sauron here, but the scene is so much more epic in the book. Instead of the Dark Lieutenant lying about Frodo being dead, he tries to use Frodo's life as a bargaining chip to get Gandalf to accept Sauron's harsh terms of Gondor's surrender, which would have included the Dark Lieutenant replacing Saruman at a newly rebuild Isengard. Also, instead of murdering the ambassador (he would never do that), Aragorn and the Dark Lieutenant lock eyes for a moment, and that scares the Lieutenant so much he screams out that he is not to be murdered as he is the negotiator.

    • @masterofawesomeness5892
      @masterofawesomeness5892 3 ปีที่แล้ว +261

      I agree that it's out of character for him to kill him, but the Dark Lieutenant cowering and riding away doesn't really fit with the open scenery. I can't imagine watching a small figure riding through the open landscape and adding to an epic scene

    • @kc3718
      @kc3718 3 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      the whole film is a gross misrepresentation of the books, and loses the kernal of the themes in exchange for pandering to retarded concepts popular in America and Antipodean 'culture'. You'd be quite unaware of what the books are actually about if you'd only settled for the films. But then many folks prefer a Mcdonalds to nutritious food garnred from a well run landscape, because it so much easier and accessible and they are all the worse for it.

    So many people complaining about Aragorn killing the Messenger. The dude was just told that his son figure had been tortured to death. He had it rubbed in his face, and there was no telling if he would get justice for it, so he took what he could get. When characters act out of character, that's when you know they've been pushed to the edge.

  • @janberkemeier7406

    Fun fact: In the books, the Mouth of Sauron survived this encounter after being intimidated into retreat by Gandalf and Aragorn, who forced him to surrender Frodo's mithril shirt instead of him tossing it over to them. He also gave the terms of surrender for the armies of the west, they included the men of Rohan rebuilding Isengard, which he hoped to claim for himself as Sauron's new right hand man after Saruman's fall from grace. His ultimate fate in the books remains unknown but it's hinted at that he was among the more "noble" of Sauron's allies who faced the free peoples in some last-ditch effort battles after the destruction of the Ring, eventually perishing.
