      @@matthewpordes3224 yes, exactly! I asked for an NES for Christmas, then when Christmas came I opened the box and said "What is this thing?!" I got both my Nes and Master System on Christmas of 1986. I loved them both and became a Sega fam for life because of the Master System. This is partly why I chose to get the Genesis in 1989. The other reason is right from the onset of the 16-bit wars the Genesis came out way ahead of the TG-16 in pure hardware muscle.
      I lived it and I can tell you from real experience on actual hardware that pound-for-pound Sega flat ran away with the show. Does that mean the TG-16 was a bad machine? Absolutely not. NEC/Hudson did not understand the US market like Sega did. Their game selection was quite a bit smaller, the TG-16 cost consumers more, it was hard to find games for it, and 9 times out of 10 the Genesis won the day with superior graphics. Yes, there were a couple of games that looked better on the TG-16 but that was very rare.

      @@19822andy I find it baffling that it wasn't visible at all over there, I know Nintendo had the monopoly but to not even be able to get shelf some shelf space in shopping centres your size?! (I'm English so I refuse to say malls!). Growing up, I knew more kids who had master systems than NES's...The other ting is I watched a Gamesack one where Joe went through every master system game. Theres so many great ones that they didn't even release in America. I just kept thinking but yeah he'll get to this or that soon...! But no.
      The thing that i would say though is (and I absolutely loved mine!) Sega would have to do something about the pads, The D-pad was just so squishy. Sega obviously made amends for that when the megadrive came along...

      Some of it's games looked 16 bit at times and I can't understand why it didn't gain more popularity in the states neither. It was cheaper, was more powerful and could display more colours than the NES. I guess it comes down to how the consoles were marketed after the crash of 83.

    Every single time I saw the Master System I was blown away. It looked so much better than the NES. But then I would hold that controller and the desire melted away. They would have to do a better controller this time than they ever had. No mushy D pad, no wire out the side, pause button on the controller, and make some kind of button mapping built into the system because many of the games had the buttons backwards.

    • @Gladson
      @Gladson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In Brazil, where the Master System was huge, they released an official 6 button controller that uses the same mold as the Genesis one, so same wonderful D-pad and same 6 face buttons. A and B work as buttons 1 and 2, C works as 1+2 and X, Y and Z are turbo (rapid fire) versions of A, B and C. It's pretty much the definitive controller for the Master System.

      Wonder Boy in Monster World
      Thunderblade
      Penguin Land
      Alex Kidd
      Kung Fu Kid
      King's Quest
      OTHER:
      Hell YES, the snail game should be included!
      ALL of the card games should be included - they were small roms. They weren't amazing, but I'd love to play Ghost House and Trans Bot again.
      Absolutely right that they won't/can't do shooters or 3D games. BUT if they could, then Missile Defense, Safari Hunt, Gangster Town and Space Harrier 3D would be great.
      Finally, I hope I never play SMS Ghostbusters ever again. IMHO It was the epitome of the kind of thing you hoped would be good, were excieted to play, and ultimately disappointed.

    • @Marcus_K
      @Marcus_K 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not true though. It was a joke made in bad taste. An Alex Kidd remake was released a while ago and went by relatively unnoticed. Alex Kidd is to the Master System what Floigan Bros is to the Dreamcast or what Clockwork Knight is to the Saturn, i.e. a non-essential game.

    • @Fattydeposit
      @Fattydeposit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In Europe AKIMW is arguably the systems most defining title. It was built-in to the world's best selling edition of that console and a disappointing remake no-one asked for not setting the world on fire has no bearing on SLX's correct assessment of how loved the game is in this part of the world.

    • @Marcus_K
      @Marcus_K 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Fattydeposit The remake was faithful to the original. The 65% score that it has on Metacritic reflects the poor quality of the original game, which has aged badly. @Benjamin Jagun I usually agree with your comments Ben but not this time. You obviously never had a Master System growing up? The Master System had a beautiful sound! 3 PSG square waves and an awesome noise channel which at times sounded really good. The Japanese stuff tends to sound really tinny at times for sure but try the European stuff on the system, more C64 type sounds and If it's bass you're after, have you ever tried listening to some of Matt Furniss's work on the system? He used that periodic sawtooth wave alot in his music instead of white noise and created drums out of squares and at times it created a decent amount of bass for the audio. I recommend listening to Alien 3, Road Rash, Back To The Future III, Lemmings, Global Gladiators and Daffy Duck In Hollywood.

    Here is something that Sega probably hasn't thought about: a Sega Channel Mini with games that most people didn't have access to unless they had the subscription service in the mid-90s.

    Now we're talking! The first ten games I want to see are: Kung-fu Kid, Black Belt, Ghostbusters, Out Run, Spellcaster, Rambo, Afterburner, Quartet, Gangster Town and Hang-On. Bonus Titles: Pro-Wrestling, Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap and Zillion II: Tri Formation

    There is always a group of games I can show friends around my age and they quickly get nostalgic. Games like Wonder Boy (Master System), Kung-Fu (Nes), California Games and so on.
    These mini systems are great for those without a pc for emulation. Nostalgia is a powerful thing.

    I just can't help but wonder how well this would sell. Could they even move 10k units? Especially in NA where Nintendo dominated. It would be cool don't get me wrong. I would love to add one to my mini retro system collection.

    • @Vulpas
      @Vulpas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Units sold doesn't equal interest. We couldn't afford every system back in the day, doesn't mean we didn't want them. I had a N64 and way later a PS1 but never had a Saturn as a kid, but not for lack of interest. Same for SMS, I didn't know it existed until I was an adult, but as a Sega fan I'd be interested.
      I think the low sales figures mislead people because I'm not convinced they reflect interest innthe product very accurately.

    • @AE780
      @AE780 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Vulpas true but projected sales do influence a company's desire to manufacture a product. I feel like we have already seen the retro mini consoles Sega will release. They choose the two consoles that had the best chance of selling well. Were they planning to release additional consoles we would have heard something about them by now.

    I'm skeptical due to the way these minis seem so geared at the markets where the Mark III/Master System performed the worst (would Japanese or American versions even turn a profit?), but I suppose one can hope.

    I would love to see a Master System Mini, for no other reason than to show the masses how great of a system it truly was. I had an NES at the time, but I was about the games, so I had the Master System as well, and I loved it just as much if not more than the NES because of the games you just couldn't get elsewhere. I'm sure with the poor sells of the US version, that might give Sega pause, but there were other places were the MS had almost "god" status, so who knows if they would offer a Mini or not. And after that Game Gear crap they offered, if their gonna do the Master System dirty like that, I say don't bother. But I would still love to see it, as the Master System was AWESOME!!!

    If they ever do put out a Master System mini, it should be exclusively for Europe and Brazil. The original system was quickly dismissed in the States, so why do we deserve a mini commemoration?

    I hope we get this from Sega. My late friend and I had Master Systems and would borrow each other's games all the time. Another friend liked the controllers so much he bought one for his Commodore 64. One game you missed was Parlour Games. I still emulate that one regularly for the billiards and darts.

    Pro Wrestling was great! The great thing about it is that is plays more like a beat-em-up and you can play 2v2 or 2 player co-op if you hand off the controller for a tag in!

Loved the SMS it was my go to system growing up I had an NES but being that I bought my own games and since the system life was on its way out it made it easy for me to purchase games back in the day!

    12:08 Road Rash and other 3D games use the powerful 16-bit RISC Video Dispkay Processor to push the limits. Obviously, the Z80 is used to modify both the X and Y coordinates of the background on every scanline to get those ground moving effects, but 3/4 of the power of SEGA systems are the VDP/GPU.

    The thing with Power Strike is that its sequels, M.U.S.H.A. and Robo Aleste were included in the prior Sega Mini releases. It's no guarantee (this is an extended wish list after all) but it shows that Sega has gone after Compile games before.
    I wonder if they'll add an exclusive game like they did with the Genesis Minis ( Darius, Space Harrier), I know there was an Alex Kidd 2 game that was made a while back.

    You're pretty down on the chances of the Power Strike titles here, but M2 did release the Aleste Collection for Sega on Switch & PS4 not too long ago (a collection you should definitely review if you haven't yet, I adore it), with its own Game Gear mini. So ironically, the chances of those games getting a hardware release were higher than the Master System's!
