The backwards compatibility and built in DVD player of the PS2 was such a huge deal, and the variety of quality games on the PS2 is just so good. Action adventure games like MGS 3, Okami and Shadow of the Colossus, RPGs like FFX and Kingdom Hearts, survival horror games like Silent Hill 2, fighting games like Virtua Fighter 4 and Soul Calibur 2, the list just goes on and on. It had something for everyone.
The SNES would still probably be my pick because it took the things that worked with NES games and built on them beautifully. It was the perfect representation of quality 2D gaming.

considering you can play final fights, ghosts and goblins, megamans etc. via ps2 i dont think its that big of a contest. snes has the usual nintendo games and some license games that couldnt be ported to ps1 or 2.

    • @cjeelde
      @cjeelde ปีที่แล้ว +9

That's because Nintendo and Sony worked on "Nintendo Play Station" for SNES. They never released that. Instead, Sony the saw the chance to release their own console: PlayStation (now as one word) while Nintendo gambled with Philips (Mario & Zelda for CD-i) and they released N64 because they did no longer wanna use CD. That made many games "for Nintendo" move to PlayStation because the developers couldn't fit their games on the cartridges. So they went for CD instead. I think Final Fantasy 7 needed 7 (?) N64 cartridges and that was unacceptable so they released the game for PS1 instead. A big win for Sony. Now Nintendo lost Final Fantasy. But also, Sony wanted a controller more similar to SNES while Nintendo changed the controller a lot for N64.
So this is why PS1 got some amount of "Nintendo vibes". It's a "Nintendo console" without Nintendo's own games plus that Sony won Final Fantasy's future while Nintendo lost it.
Sony's success in the video game business is so much thanks to Nintendo.

I'm a Nintendo fan boy but I don't like everything they make. N64 and Wii U were not good enough. These consoles could have been good enough with some tweaks and better game library. But I'm happy that Nintendo learned from the mistakes and made way better consones.
GC was the result from the mistakes with N64. Finally a useful controller!
Switch was the result from the mistakes with Wii U.

I was a Sega kid so Genesis was my preferred 16 bit console. And since I was a Sega kid, Saturn was my prefered successor in the 32 bit era, so I didn't get into the PlayStation craze. As a result, PS2 just didn't impress me after Dreamcast, but with Sega's demise I picked up an X-Box, and that blew me away. Bought the 360 when it came out, had the HD DVD drive, and when that died I needed to buy a blu-ray. Well, low and behold PS3 was the same price! Honestly, that impressed me more than any console before it. PlayStation suddenly became my favorite after getting into some of the PS1 and 2 backcatelogs, and kinda made me wish I'd played them sooner. Yeah, the earlier PlayStation consoles weren't as technically impressive as their respective competitors, but some of the exclusives sure were a lot of fun.

For me, I prefer 3 and 5 -- there was something far more magical to both of those. The third generation was most people's introduction to gaming, when everything was new and exciting, and then the fifth generation was the beginning of 3D. If it has to be between these 2, I'm Super Nintendo all the way. When I think about which library I played more at the time, the SNES was by far the 16-bit console that I played the most, and has the most games of any console in my personal top 10 with Earthbound, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, and Final Fantasy III. The PS2 got played very little by comparison, and has no games that make my personal top 10. More than anything, I played its awesome arcade compilations, and spent a few glorious weeks playing the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo that came with Zone of the Enders over and over, capped off by a nice pile of shmups.
When I think about what I play more now, it's still the SNES library. I go back to those games more than any other console, and 16-bit games more than any other generation. The SNES has a wide variety of games that offer up really unique experiences, whether RPGs, platformers, shooters, puzzle games, or just crazy stuff like On the Ball, Cacoma Knight in Bizyland, Firestriker, Dolucky Puzzle Adventure '94, or who knows what else. The PS2 had some good variety as well, but due to the style of visuals that were popular at the time, there's a same-yness to the visuals of many games. The ones I gravitated to were the ones with more personality in the US- Chulip, Katamari Damacy, Under the Skin, Flipnic... or the shooters like Gradius V.
For me, the PS2 is the third best Playstation even. I'll take the PS4 and PS1 both over it.
All that said, everything is purely subjective. If we're keeping opinions out of it and just going with facts, the greatest would probably be the original PS3, just because it could play three generations of games. Tough to beat that bang for the buck... yet I play it less than most of my consoles.

They've just been refined so PS2 games feel more dated in my opinion because they're missing quality of life features that we would expect now despite having amazing 3D graphics for the time I feel like the 6th generation games don't really have an identity compared to the snes and ps1 era also 2D games were dead during that generation

During the exploding budgets of HD gaming, but before the rise of mobile gaming, handhelds were the last bastion for creative, low budget experiments. I don't mean to belabor your aversion to the DS and its games but it really does surprise me that you haven't found more to your taste there, considering in a lot of ways it melds the 2D renaissance of the 16-bit era with the huge library and install-base that the PS2 offered.

I totally agree as these two beign the best consoles, both with great games and different experiences, the only reason to choose for me, the one edge, is the retro-compatibility of the PS2 with PS games, specialy cool for me at the time since I never owned a PS1, a lot of new games to have for cheap then. But great also for peoples hving the PS1 with a lot of game already (and not having to play with the inversed PS1 to try to make it work lol.

My first video games were in the pre-crash era.
My most fondest memories of gaming as a kid was Colecovision, and my fondest as an adult was probably the Saturn. One was great at pre-crash arcade games. and the other was a mix of 2d and 3d 90s arcade games.
The NES seemed alien to me. I was given a dpad, and I had nightmares of it being another Intellivision controller. Thankfully, I can lay it on the floor and use 2 handed typing to control the dpad.
I could game for fun, but I felt like an athlete who went from dominating to not making the team once Nintendo had a cursade against right handed controls. Suddenly Nintendo became the reverse polo club. When Beeshu made ambidetrous joysticks, one ruling during the 90s FTC regulations on system gatekeepers were tightened to not allow a refusal of a licenses based on handedness, so Beeshu got their license for the Superstick and a couple other models.
The Saturn was the first system where I didn't rely on a birthday present to get at full price. I also had an under the table deal of supplying a rental store Saturn games and made enough in 50% commission (my games, his store) where I averaged a new Saturn game a month in profits. And since he was the only indie rental store with Saturn in a 20 mile radius, almost no conpetition.

i'm personally of the opinion that it was the PS1. this is considering two of my top 3 games of all time are Mario World and Link to the Past. I think PS1 games where more unique, varied, revolutionary and there were more better ones than on any other console i can think of... save perhaps the Switch. The PS1 saw the best of the early-mid 90s 16bit era improved with 32bit horsepower while still using pixel art (which i love) while also bringing to the table a huge variety of 3D games over the course of time when 3D games went from experimental infancy to the status quo. this very unique dichotomy of imho 3 completely separate eras of gaming make the PS1 library the most interesting, to me.
You have games like SotN, Suikoden II, Gunners Heaven, Panzer Bandit, Megaman X3-X6 & 8, In The Hunt, Metal Slug, all the Capcom fighting games, Valkyrie Profile, Little Ralph, and basically ever 2D RPG etc - which are basically SNES/Genesis era games given the full birth of benefits that came with the 'next gen'. Then you have early 3D games which were experimental as devs were trying to figure out how to use 3D to craft games - Jumping Flash, D, Descent, Crash Bandicoot, Ridge Racer etc - these games while may feel janky today, they offer a really unique experience and represent gameplay which is largely missing today and was very much a product of its time. And finally there are the games that came in the late 90s/2000, when 3D was the de facto format for games - THPS2, Metal Gear Solid, Medieval, Soul Reaver, Grant Turismo 2 (still the best GT, come at me) - games which have more in common with what you see made today than in the early-mid 90s, and they're still *fantastic.* Of course the cherry on top is that the PS1 library has *TONS* of great games, more so than SNES or PS2, and more "bangers", in more genres, visual styles and gameplay mechanics.
Bonus Points: all the 2D SNES native genres which saw successful 2.5D or 3D iterations: Final Fantasy Tactics, Front Mission 3, Klonoa, Tomba, Harvest Moon, Raycrisis/Raystorm/Thunder Force V, Skullmonkeys. Bonus Points 2: all the goofy, innovative/experimental and just plain weird as shit the PSX got that you rarely see elsewhere: Rising Zan, LSD, Incredible Crisis, Intelligent Qube, Dreams, Baldies, Board Game Top Shop, Bushido Blade, 1 on 1, Geppy-X, Spider the Video Game, Tall Infinity, Parappa, RC de Go, Power Shovel.... and of course... the last of the FMV games. It also felt like the last time we had an established home console presence of puzzle games. Yeah my knowledge of the PSX library cuts *deep.*
The PS2 sanitized, repackaged and streamlines the 3D gameplay that was born on the PS1 and lost something along the way. That doesn't mean that it didn't have incredible games, just that they were build on the established franchises and gameplay born on the PS1. The PS1 simply offers more... of everything, than any other console until you get to modern times with digitally available indies and old game ports. Of course, the PS2 plays PS1 games and has a DVD player so it's just a better buy as a console itself - that in itself elevates the PS2 to the top, but i feel like that's just cheating. Just my 2 cents.

  • @markula_4040
    @markula_4040 ปีที่แล้ว +1

PS2 is in that realm where most of it's 3D games just haven't quite aged well enough to still go back and play while everything on the Super Nintendo is as playable today as it was back then. Also I was in my teens for the SNES while I was psushing mid 20s when the PS2 came out so the nostalgia just isn't going to be as strong for me but make no mistake. The PS2 was a juggernaut and more successful since that could be seen as the first generation where video games just aren't for kids only anymore. That's how I see it anyways.

SNES gets my vote by a thin margin. The PS2 was a blast with an amazing library of long lost gems. Gran Truismo 3 A-Spec, Street Fighter 15th Anniversary Edition, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolutuon, Dark Cloud…. All so great along with so many others. Still, it can’t beat Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past, Duper Castlevania IV, Super Metroid, The Donkey Kong Country series, Super Mario World, Super Metroid… classics all.
While neither would be the best consoles of all time, I would love to see a comparison between the Neo Geo ACS and the Sega Dreamcast. Both were ground breaking systems in their own respective generations and both were at home arcade style game havens. Perhaps this could be a future video idea.
Thanks a million for your great trip down memory lane. ❤

When I first saw Super Mario World at the Toys R Us kiosk, I was blown away. Going from 8-bit to 16-bit was such a huge leap. But the library of games still were all pixel art, so a lot of titles look the same. And outside of Nintendo first party titles, there wasn't a ton of quality. PS2 however is when the gaming industry was fully matured and had a lot more money to throw around. And if anyone remembers when you first saw and played games like Grand Theft Auto 3, it felt absolutely unlike anything you've seen before. Jak and Daxter had a seamless world to explore which we take for granted today, but at the time, not having a load screen every couple seconds was an amazing feat. MGS 2 & 3 were putting blockbuster action movies to shame. God of War was making developers across the world scratch their heads wondering how they made it. And Shadow of the Colossus (at the time) felt like a next gen title. The PS2 was just filled with gaming firsts, and so much of how we play games today was built way back on the PS2. That's why so many gamers who were alive at that time felt disappointed with both the PS3 and PS4 because that "first time, never seen it before" newness just wasn't there. It was all a shinier coat on the same ride. And you could argue the same for the SNES, a shinier coat on the same ride.

Ps2 was a time when developers could take a gamble on their projects. With ps3 and onward the cost of development meant companies couldnt take the risk. And as video games went mainstream that meant trying to cater to the largest audience so you get less of the quirky games. Indie games are usually really low budget and most were probably only released online.

I remember years ago Sony wanted to merge with Nintendo back in early 90s,

Unless you only ever had one console, it''s impossible to pick one. For me the greatest console was the Mega Drive, but then it was the PS1, and then it was the PS2, and so on. I guess it's more about the games you play, each console has THAT game(s) you.will always cherish.

PS2 was basically the cheapest DVD player out there that also played video games. Thats what made it the most relevant.

Been gaming since 1987 and the snes and ps2 are easily my favorite. So many gems on both systems. I collect for both of them regularly. About to go pick up mega man x for the first time ever(never owned it for some reason)

I feel like the PS2 has so much games that appeal to me. The super Nintendo has good games like alttp, super metroid, and the final fantasy games (one of them being my favourite which is 5). But the ps2 has such a big library of games that are revolutionary like re4, shadow of the Colossus, the persona games and a lot more.
