  • Today I show you how I throw a walmart Red Rhino brand 5ft cast net. This net has 3/8" mesh and works fine for medium size and large threadfin shad. For baby shad or minnows I recommend a 1/4" mesh. Thanks for watching! #fishing #walmart #castnetfishing

Does this method work for all castnets?

Soak a new net in hot water and fabric softener for 24hrs,, manicure the knot ends to about 1/4 inch where you find them. Helps a lot on cheap nets.

The process is called "Manicuring the Net". The mono. mesh has been folded, twisted or otherwise tortured since the manufacturer got it. Mono has memory and is stiff. Hot water allows it to "relax" and soften. I imagine the fabric softener helps here also, the softener's real help is in relaxing the lead line, which is often cheap, kinked and stiff. The looser the better is preferred. Clipping is done wherever a knot end is long, as to not catch the mesh, Braille limes (thick mono) often have 1 to 1 1/4 inches of tail on a new net and they are heck when they catch your mesh.
