I went to Fred Fixler's school but unfortunately I was there after Morgan had already left (around ~2010). I always wanted to learn from him, I'm glad he released a course!

He is so right about being discouraged. There is an artist that talks about material and how everything will cause cracking and damage to your picture. I became so discouraged by all of the negative talking and no solution that I turned to pastel. I really wanted to learn oil painting but I gave up.

I was a budding artist years ago. My parents were adamant in their advice which was that artists starve. If you love art go with it. Artists have made a living through the ages. They may not have had all the money in the world but they had the satisfaction of living their dream. If you want to get rich go into another field. If your soul soars when you draw or paint that is where your heart will find fulfillment.

As a professional illustrator who does things in publishing (like book covers and commercial illustrations and things), I definitely believe that there will never be a time when you actually think your work is good enough to get started. Often my work gets significantly better when I get a request from a client that is a bit out of my comfort zone, or when I have a tricky client, and it lights a fire under me and I just NEED to do well on it because the stakes are high because it’s work. I think an element of trial by fire is almost necessary in some cases. It’s hard to have that push if you’re forever seeing yourself as a student.

I remember Malcolm Forbes wanted James Bama to paint his portrait. He told Bama i can pay whatever you want. Bama told him, i'm sorry, but it's not always about the money, i have to have an emotional connection to what i'm painting.

Kristian, i remember an old Odd Couple episode in which Oscar had to write a book, and it was agony. Felix asked him why is it so hard to wright this book, and his reply was, Artist don't like writing, They love having written. The process can be both, like the old movie on Michelangelo, AGONY AND ECSTASY. When something happens that is magical, it's heaven. Iv'e read where William Bouguereau would put all of this paint on, only to scrape it all off because it did not work.

I think less and less people will be making money being "illustrators" alone (since AI and such, and even without AI, only a few illustrators made big bucks since they were the ones with the connections to millionaires and buyers and had fame in those circles).
However, creatives, will make "success" now, since if you have one skill like illustration, and you go master Unreal Engine, Animation, Sound Design, Programming you can CREATE something that will make you successful (you don't need to master all, master one and be a generalist in all others)
Or, you are an Illustrator, and then start learning storytelling, marketing/social media, you can create a comic and self publish or publish with Image comics.
I think this is where the world is heading, basically you will always be abused if you work for someone (as an illustrator for example) instead of using all the knowledge to Create things for others. Putting a lot of pieces together and having some IP of yours.

I started painting in 1970 when my mom gave me an oil set. I never had the $ to study but I did receive a science scholarship and got a few degrees in Biology, Nursing. Because the student loan thing scared me living where I live. Jobs aren’t exactly plentiful. But Ive been in shows, received small grants awards. And today I have my art studio and my woodworking studio next door but since Greedflation things have been, Difficult

    Local gallery invitation
I'm curious if something similar happened to anyone, and this happens to fit the video.... I was invited by a local gallery to submit an artwork for an exhibition. Since I didn't have anything close to their subject, I took time away from other things to do something for them since they invited me and I didn't want to say no.
My piece was rejected though, so I'm wondering why the he££ would they invite me to begin with?

I heard Norman Rockwell son peter, said his father would take out a loan because he couldn't finish a painting on time, only because he was plagued by perfection. His wife at that time, would say, Norman, for God sake it's done already, turn in the canvass.
