I personally really like the habit of not having my phone in the bedroom. I don't have the issue of, as you mentioned, needing it to set my alarm. I much prefer to wake up naturally, at the end of my sleeping cycle, and only set my alarm when I really have to be somewhere early in the morning. When my phone is next to my bed, it's very tempting to grab it the moment I wake up, and start checking the news or messages. I'm hardly awake and already my attention is getting hijacked! When my phone is in the living room, my morning routine is better. I first wash my face, brush my teeth, and do a bit of exercise. I am experimenting with living more slowly, and one way I'm doing that is by having my first cup of coffee and just do nothing while I sip it. It's only 5 minutes, but it really lays the foundation for the day ahead.
Your comment is appreciated haha. Was nice to read and something to think about. I have automated some of my morning routine down really well but I think I could make bigger gains without my phone being apart of the picture! Really appreciate your comment. I struggle with being punctional and this may help. Along with the video mentioning adding friction between my phone and myself in the bedroom / replacing it with something else.
I've had my social media notifications turned off since about May 2020 and it has been the best thing I have ever done! My screen time INSTANTLY went down because I was jumping to my phone at the first sound it made, and now I check social media when I want to, not because I feel like I have to do it! This video also gave me some new ideas when it comes to how I use up my digital time, thank you!
(4:04 - Go analogue) - It may not seem very minimalist, but I actually use multiple devices instead. I have my iPhone, which is my everyday phone with messaging and social apps (TH-cam, Snapchat, Telegram, Reddit, ...) that I take outside and use as a "normal" phone like anyone would expect. Then I also have my previous phone, a Samsung that I repurposed to be my "home phone"; it doesn't have any social media or messaging apps. It's only got music, todo's, Habitica and a few other things. It's de-Googled (bare LineageOS 18) so it also helps reducing distracting stuff. I also have an iPad which I use for college, on which are installed all my everyday stuff and some media applications (Netflix, Jellyfin, Reddit, ...) but I don't take it in bed. As far as reading, I used to use an old 2013 Galaxy Tab but I recently switched to a very low-end and inexpensive (was ~70$) Lenovo tablet, which sole purpose is e-books and manga reading. It's got nothing else installed (and well, to be frank it wouldn't be powerful enough for anything else). While this setup might not fit some people's definition of "minimalism", it's been working very well for me over the past 4 years. My use of social media and my wasted time (i.e. time used to do something else than I had planned) drastically decreased. edit: also, most notifications are disabled on all of them.
Hey Cheng. I started digital minimalism just this year and I'm getting only benefits out of it. I'm really curious how you come up with your video topics and how your process of making them on this platform looks like. I love this video and stay safe.
Hey thanks for the nice comment Robert! Most of the topics are created out of self-reflection on areas I need to improve. Maybe if others are interested I shall make a video about the creation process. Glad you enjoyed it and stay safe too!
@@CKSPACE Even though you don't have the amount of subscribers you deserve, I think you have reached the point where every video is a banger. There are so many shots and so much work put into that I am really interested in the complete creation process. Keep up your working schedule and your quality content.
I agree with the "use physical items wherever possible" logic. For example, I use a physical card instead of using the phone to tap the gantry gates and TT token instead of the app. By doing this, I help a lot by saving my phone battery.
You are right - social media knows us better than we do and that's how they can control us. We should have more awareness when using social media - Yuval Noah is a great man that talks about this in some other podcasts. Great video and I am happy to see more and more social media awareness
It's actually wild how high my screen time gets when I fall off monitoring it. Love the idea of framing it as "studying your digital minimalism journey"
Loved this! I'm a huge fan of the digital settings smartphones have nowadays. I keep the screen colour to the warmest and the brightness to the lowest ALL DAY (I feel the light hurts my eyes otherwise). At night I have the night shift mode on but I always postpone it haha. I don't have any notifications except for WhatsApp, alarm and phone call, and I also have the screen time monitored for Instagram and TH-cam. I'm very much addicted to my cellphone, especially since last year, but these settings help A LOT!
High quality content! This is something that I have been too scared to really buckle down and have some discipline in. Proud to say that, for the most part, I use my bed for ONLY sleeping. I really try to make it a habit to get out of there when I do not need to be there and do my thing!
Start with you own space and be more mindful. Start slowly and expect it to be a journey and it will take time. Minimalism is different for everyone, so we can only give you very generic tips.. I’m sorry
What I did is: Made my smartphone dumber by doing the following: 0. Switch the phone to vibrate only mode. 1. Delete ALL social media apps (ALL!) 2. Disable all notifications except from people (calls, SMS, messenger, NO Chats!) and essential tool apps (Uber, online banking etc.) 3. Do not install apps which are not tool apps (tool aps are: maps, banking, Uber etc.) 4. Hide non-essential and infrequently used apps from start screen 5. Let your partner put a pass code to prevent you from downloading new apps

Digital minimalism is one area I need to work on. It can be hard when you use your phone and laptop for growing your brand
I really recommend to you Cal Newport or Yuval Noah to see their books and talks about the topic! Really inspiring and eye openers

My old iphone 7 with crappy battery life helps me a lot in controlling my screen on time.
