I think she is like me and that we are okay with rules... if we are the ones setting the rules. For me, I could agree that we should have a certain rule, but if someone makes me do it then I am no longer interested. However, if I come up with the rule and/or I decide to do the challenge myself, then I am almost 100% likely to do it myself. I don't know if this is how she is, but this is how I am.
Was literally just saying to myself an hour ago "dude, I'm absolutely addicted to TH-cam, and I need to fix this". Consider this my last TH-cam watch until Friday night, which I will experiment with as my dedicated day of leisurely streaming. I needed the concept of this vid, and it came at the right time, thanks man
As a 23 year old, I rarely every use social media. I mostly use my technology to watch videos, video games, work, and do homework lol. I feel bad when my friends text me and I rarely respond. The best way to get in contact with me is on the phone or meet in person lol.
daizaria this is how it should be. At least you have people messaging you no one has bothered to message me for years since I’ve used my social media less. But I’ve become more productive so I don’t really care

@@Ihateteenagerstheyrecringe My partner has a full beard and I never know if I'll get to kiss a full pair of lips, a lower lip with a bunch of hair, a lower lip paired with a quarter of an upper with a side of hair, etc. never gets boring. it is also uncomfortable for oral. My spouse looks super atractive with beard but he doesn't like to keep it more than just a couple of days, thank god.
Matt: Nat said I gotta shave to get her to do this, so I shall Nat: Breaks EVERY RULE You know what this means? You get grow the biggest, bushiest, wild-man beard that you possibly can.
@@bebop504 It's possible that, unlike Matt, she had a job she found unfulfilling. Most people do. So, for her happiness and quality of life, she's now spending her time also doing things that make her happy. Perhaps those things don't make money, but maybe they don't need any more money.
I also have an instagram account and my "trick" to dont spend that much time is to dont follow alot of people. Sounds weird, probably because i dont have that much friends, but the less people you follow the less posts and stories you can see. I also dont follow no celebrity or no artist, or whatever, who is my inspiration
Tadeo - this has helped me as well ! I follow less than 150 friends and family. I used to follow about 50 celebrities/art accounts and would spend hours scrolling through my feed. Now it takes less than 2 minutes. I don’t understand how some people can follow +1000 accounts and spend an entire day on there
I like that Instagram tells you when you've caught up on all posts in a 3 day period, feels satisfying and let's me know I should get off the app because there's nothing else to do. Facebook is a hell hole, though.
I envy Nat. She is content with exactly what she is doing and how she is living, despite many people with similar habits/routines wanting to change. I can't speak for everyone watching this channel, but I (and probably many others) have made a realization that I want to better myself and I don't always know where to stop with that; where my comforts lay and where I really don't need to constantly be trying to improve. Nat seems to intuitively know where her boundaries are. I guess it all comes down to self awareness. And she is one self aware bad ass. Also, I think that there is a ton of value to come from having Natalie's view points in this video. It gives a contrasting opinion to a lot of other people doing similar challenges on TH-cam. It shows people that there isn't 1 strict rule to success and happiness. You have to pick and choose what works best for yourself.
Could you make a video on minimalist note-taking in general (how exactly do you use your note app? do you also make physical note? how often/many notes do you make? what for? do you use note-taking features in audible etc.? how often (if at all) do you transfer notes from A to B? do you have some kind of commonplace book where you centralize all your notes with time? what's your revisiting strategy? deletion strategy etc.?)
I totally cut back all social media, except TH-cam in 2016. I don’t miss a thing nor care what everyone is doing constantly. Thanks for sharing your insight Matt!
Thanks, Matt! I'm on my way to become a minimalist. I like a lot to keep my things in order and be able to access every tool that I need in very few seconds! Keep the good work going and do not forget about health!
Tbh I think Natalie is just an addict and is trying to hide the fact she’s addicted. My wife is the same way. She flips out if she can’t find her phone and it drives me insane.
asrthsntar lol no it’s not that. We both have access to each other’s phones. And all I ever see her do is watch make-up videos and she always tries to make me watch them with her but it drives me crazy😂 My wife is pretty attached to me and we’re together 24/7.. probably one of the most loyal women I’ve ever met
She doesn't have a job. That kind of explains it. I'd go crazy too if I didn't have anything to do. Work occupies most of our time, but imagine being unemployed with no kids.
TimeFlies - Time Management lmao I am a lot more stressed in regards to my degree and workload than I am about useless social media. I don’t think your targeting your accusations correctly, digital usage is absolutely not the reason people stress
Xeetrix what I call stress is not the everyday word we use about being in tension prior to a specific event but I’m referring to a constant tension due to a relative addiction to Social Media - for example - that affects your mental state and increases your blood pressure
I think being productive at work is nice but u should make time for you self to grow spiritually I am not saying be an monk and avoid all distractions but sometimes u have to sit back and forget everything and just medidate or read a book whatever that can make u happy ;)
I’m 15 so I have kind of grown up with technology I’m I actually going to try out some of these things after realising his much more productively I could be using my time. Thanks
I had to put it on hold for the moment as I'm working on a new feature doc! Hiring some people to help with the workload so will hopefully be able to bring it back soon.
Hahaha. So proud of myself. I conquered all rules! I am not into digital by means of distractions but by means of being productive. I only use my phone to track my calendar, to set alarm, use maps and search for new hobbies to try. I feel fortunate. I truly appreciate it now.
The message in your videos as well as the way you portray it is awesome. Great editing, voicing over, music choice and definitely quality content, that I must say quite improved my life. Thank you, keep it up my man!
It’s crazy cause I was literally sitting down thinking about how much I overuse my phone and about to create my own digital detox for this week and your video comes out 🙌🏽 Perfect timing, loved the video Matt! 👏🏽👏🏽
I love how much you got out of it but love even more how neither you or Nat pressured the other one. You didn’t get frustrated when she didn’t follow the rules and she didn’t get frustrated when you asked her to do this reset (RIP broatache). It speaks a lot to y’all’s relationship!
@@robenkhoury7079 if you respond and read comments, it is social media. Social media detox is just a lite version of the more brutal dopamine deto where you abstain from electronics, food, social interaction, sex, caffeine, books, technology, etc. You can walk, drink water, meditate, or write with pen and paper. Try that for just 4 hours. Lol
@@dragonchr15 ok and what exactly do you get from the brutal version?? You said no food so, do you plan on dying of hunger after a while? Also what's the point of abstraining from social interaction or books? Seems to me like you just made up a list of a bunch of ridicilous stuff just to make yourself seem "tough" or "badass" by not doing basic human functions.
I’m constantly finding myself on your channel. I love it. Super challenging yet encouraging at the same time. Between your videos, podcasts, and Ted talks, I literally stream nothing. Thank you for your channel!
I totally agree with you on Email. I added 'InBox When Ready for Gmail' to my desktop and 'quiet for Gmail' for my phone (Android) to stop me checking work emails in the evening. Both helped break the habit and as a result, I get far more done during the day. Another great app for the phone (Android again) is called 'Less Phone' for when I want a serious 'phone detox'. It lets you set only a few apps to use and I find that really a great way to ignore the phone but still be able to use it as a camera or access Maps for directions (for example).
I love how you show the contrasts between you and Natalie - it makes it realistic for those who have different lifestyles to our loved ones! (Also, you two are the cutest)
@mat_s_s I think she, as an adult, is capable of deciding by herself if something is gonna benefit her or not. Who knows, maybe she can distract herself during a really stressfull hour by watching cat videos and avoid getting anxious about something, or she simply has enough mental fortitude to not get any drawbacks from it. In the end, what do you know about it?
I have to say, months ago I made a pact with myself that I would only occasionally use my phone. I slapped it on silent and did my best to not go on any social media or messaging apps except for once or twice a day. It was a very motivating week. I got alot of work done and felt better and I don't usually have negative emotions and such when it comes to the internet. It's never been anything really toxic to me but when I set it down I felt so much better.
Matt it was really good, I do follow minimal habits but will get started to incorporate this in my life, I would love to see a video about you as a minimalist getting along with someone who has a hard time following your habits, how do you guys get along she seems to have different personality, I have always seen people putting out, you should be really picky when it comes to healthy relationship, how do you answer that, I would love to see a video about it.
Tip for digital minimalism: use the digital wellbeing app (or something comparable) to track the amount of time you are on your smartphone and get various statistics on which apps you use how often, how many notifications you get etc... that was a real eye-opener to me
i don’t even think i use social media that much tbh 🤷🏻♂️ my biggest pitfalls are youtube and netflix - rarely not on 😅 entertaining as always, some genuinely well timed and cued jokes that made me laugh ☺️ love your work 💛
I love your camera angles. That overhead of the desk is dope and the color grading on the crowds walking is lovely. Great content, qualitative information!
It's funny that in December 2020, I am checking the comments section and seeing that the top comments and the replies under it were about Matt's statement towards Nat and Nat not being able to abide with the rules instead of understanding the message/concept of the video. This is an awesome year-old video by the way. I think it still applies even to this day. I've always been grateful to stumble across minimalism and essentialism in this technology era. You're one of my favorite TH-camrs on the planet, Matt.
I asked Nat, can I start saying "wife" in my videos. And she said, "no". Haha she's in the midst of planning our actual wedding so I think we're pretending like that Vegas thing never happened. Idk I'm as confused as you are.
You guys are Aussies. You should affectionately refer to her as the "old lady". Good luck in your "real" wedding. Sounds like my old lady. We have had multiple's of everything because the "first one didn't count".
no, the point is she is currently looking for a job, which means she sent out applications and is constantly checking her mail for job interviews. that's what he meant.
I'm engineering student from India in first year i bought my 6 GB smartphone and got addicted to gaming and social media specially Instagram, in school I was topper but in first 2 terms I got only 68% average now i"m using 8 year old keypad phone by Nokia and getting good results as per I started gym and co curricular activities and exams are now not a tension for me always ready for I'm back to my topper mode, although I need smartphone but I'm stay with my classmate in hostel who helps me a lot. one interesting thing that people say social media brings the world in your hand in seconds, but i would like to say after staying far from it for 8 months, you actually need it for 15 minutes a day and most of us use it for 150 minutes a day!!! Thank you for a good video and probably you are thinking i have no smartphone then from where i'm viewing and writing such a huge comment? it's my mini vacation time and i'm at home ;):):)
I involuntarily did digital minimalism just over a year ago because my phone died and my laptop needed repair. I found the same results as you. With just my iPad I enjoyed life better and I guess I was more content. I was at university with no video games which helped.
for Natalie i suppose, it was so difficult to follow these rules bec of Her routine and Way of living. While Matt is working on his new project or going to the gym, Nat as a jobless person can do whatever she want. What i mean by that, is that Matt finds soc. media a distracting factor for his already planned workflow BUT for her use of the social media and streaming services are also some type of a planned life. And by depriviving those things from her you are ruining her way of life, its the same, if Nat would tell you to quit working. i hope it makes sense and nobody got offended.
"I'm constantly waiting for somebody to tell me what my priorities should be instead of doing the most important work that I know I should be doing " ...that perspective changed my life, THANKS!
She has to feel that way. It has to be some education before practicing. You have to learn in depth about materialism, meditation, minimalist and how so much distraction can reduce our simplicity of happiness. Now anyone can understand why should pick up phone less ...etc. otherwise definitely will gets boring. I don’t know if my grammar is correct, but I hope you get the point🙈 ( Eng is my sec language)

man if I shaved my stash for a girl in return for something and she wouldn't follow through I would lose my shit lol
I needed the concept of this vid, and it came at the right time, thanks man
So true. Just said this too. Gonna start setting rules.
Read digital minimalism.
Bet
As a 23 year old, I rarely every use social media. I mostly use my technology to watch videos, video games, work, and do homework lol. I feel bad when my friends text me and I rarely respond. The best way to get in contact with me is on the phone or meet in person lol.
daizaria this is how it should be. At least you have people messaging you no one has bothered to message me for years since I’ve used my social media less. But I’ve become more productive so I don’t really care
Same for me lol
Text should be setup a meeting or phone call or just as a reminder/notification like "i am running late" or "don't forget to pick up dinner"
SD some of the younger generation don’t even like speaking on the phone. There is even memes about it. I’m a supposed
millennial and I love speaking on the phone is feels more real to me or even video chat

Rule #5: Never trust someone who wants you to shave off your moustache.
Trust me, aesthetics become secondary once you‘re expected to kiss someone with a moustache regularly haha
@@sarapocorn can you elaborate?
@@Ihateteenagerstheyrecringe My partner has a full beard and I never know if I'll get to kiss a full pair of lips, a lower lip with a bunch of hair, a lower lip paired with a quarter of an upper with a side of hair, etc. never gets boring. But bottom line is: I don't really like having hair in my mouth & it can even irritate your skin, given you kiss a lot haha
it is also uncomfortable for oral.
My spouse looks super atractive with beard but he doesn't like to keep it more than just a couple of days, thank god.
Rule #4 Never trust someone who HAS a moustache.
I think he looks way better without it lol.
Matt: Nat said I gotta shave to get her to do this, so I shall
Nat: Breaks EVERY RULE
You know what this means?

I don’t understand how some people can follow +1000 accounts and spend an entire day on there
Jessica Hernan right! i see a new post at my feed every 2nd day
Yes! I recently did this as well . Helps so much .
Seriously though! This is important.
I love how you two can be so different but still be so chill about it
Natalie: "I dont feel like im getting any value from this experiment".
A few minutes later.
Natalie: "Yeah, so... I broke some rules..."
I totally cut back all social media, except TH-cam in 2016. I don’t miss a thing nor care what everyone is doing constantly. Thanks for sharing your insight Matt!
Imagine if he shaved and the camera wasn't recording
Actually Matt just would need to wait for 15 minutes... and his beard would be back there LOL
He could just do a edit for before and edit.
Start of this video: Shave that moustache, Matt.
1 minute in: Yayyyy!
_[instant like]_
Yes me too 🤣🤣🙈
Exactly.......!
In my humble opinion, just the moustache looks good only on certain men. Like Brett McKay. Or my father.....
Maekani Khan and Tom Selleck
Thanks, Matt!
I'm on my way to become a minimalist. I like a lot to keep my things in order and be able to access every tool that I need in very few seconds!
Keep the good work going and do not forget about health!
I always get so happy when I see that you've uploaded a new video. Thanks for the amazing content, Matt!
Tbh I think Natalie is just an addict and is trying to hide the fact she’s addicted. My wife is the same way. She flips out if she can’t find her phone and it drives me insane.
If she's flipping out it's not because she's addicted. Something else is up.
asrthsntar lol no it’s not that. We both have access to each other’s phones. And all I ever see her do is watch make-up videos and she always tries to make me watch them with her but it drives me crazy😂
My wife is pretty attached to me and we’re together 24/7.. probably one of the most loyal women I’ve ever met
She doesn't have a job. That kind of explains it. I'd go crazy too if I didn't have anything to do. Work occupies most of our time, but imagine being unemployed with no kids.
How do you deal with that? Do you fight because of it?
B C yes exactly.
I’ll be honest I’m with Natalie on shaving the mustache 🙋🏼♂️🙋🏼♂️
6:37 we FEEL like digital usage doesn’t have a negative effect but IT ACTUALLY DOES... its INDIRECT through STRESS...

More props to him putting up with her i reckon. That being physically present but always on ur phone is a killer like she is at the end
Super Saiyan 3 take your MGTOW bs to a MGTOW channel lol.
Emmy Hucker Oh please she’s punching above her weight haha
I read that book just a couple months ago! It's made a massive difference to my phone usage, highly recommended 👍

Rule #1: There are no rules to Minimalism.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
There don't have to be rules. But also rules can help a lot when you align them with your values and priorities.
There used to be loads of rules... But they got rid of them.

@mat_s_s I think she, as an adult, is capable of deciding by herself if something is gonna benefit her or not. In the end, what do you know about it?

In 2 Months: my wife is pregnant.
Is it just me, or does Matt look like a minimalist version of Mario/Luigi with the mustasch?
I have to say, months ago I made a pact with myself that I would only occasionally use my phone. I slapped it on silent and did my best to not go on any social media or messaging apps except for once or twice a day. It was a very motivating week. I got alot of work done and felt better and I don't usually have negative emotions and such when it comes to the internet. It's never been anything really toxic to me but when I set it down I felt so much better.
I love how Natalie doesn't do the challenges, has not rules and she is happy anyway. Can she make the blog?
Matt it was really good, I do follow minimal habits but will get started to incorporate this in my life, I would love to see a video about you as a minimalist getting along with someone who has a hard time following your habits, how do you guys get along she seems to have different personality, I have always seen people putting out, you should be really picky when it comes to healthy relationship, how do you answer that, I would love to see a video about it.
Tip for digital minimalism: use the digital wellbeing app (or something comparable) to track the amount of time you are on your smartphone and get various statistics on which apps you use how often, how many notifications you get etc... that was a real eye-opener to me
This came at the perfect time I’m literally addicted to my phone... well TH-cam it’s definitely TH-cam

I know right :O what do you think the electric razor was?
Rule 1: No screens in bed

My first thought was “Nat’s going to start sleeping on the couch.” 😆 You guys are so funny!
She has to feel that way.
It has to be some education before practicing.
You have to learn in depth about materialism, meditation, minimalist and how so much distraction can reduce our simplicity of happiness. Now anyone can understand why should pick up phone less ...etc. otherwise definitely will gets boring.
