My old man loved this song. He banged this song out across lake Tawarewa New Zealand with his sanyo cassette radio in his Hamilton jet 83 in the 90s Trout fishing openings. As much as he trashed it , I still dig it.
@@moonknight4053to this day there’s not a shed piss up nor pub that won’t skip on this gem. Shit… blasted across the river earlier today whilst white baiting lol.
First digital recording in pop music and still one of the best. This is from Bop Til You Drop, and there are no weak songs on it. The combination of Ry Cooder and David Lindley on guitars is breathtaking. Chaka Khan does the vocal lead on "Don'tcha Mess Up a Good Thing". The last song, "I Can't Win" has the best vocal harmonies I've ever heard. I've worn out numerous vinyl copies of this LP and still listen to it often. A complete masterpiece.
I was fortunate enough to see Ry and David Lindley in concert at the Auckland Town Hall,NZ,back in the 80's.Just the two of them,no backup band.Great concert.
I'm turning green with envy that you saw Cooder and Lindley together sans back-up! Saw David 3 or 4 times back in the day when he toured w/Jackson Browne, and I still own vinyl of Kaleidescope, one of David's early groups. I've never seen Ry live, but have been a fan since I noticed him on Captain Beefheart's "Safe As Milk" LP waayyy back.
@@williamgreenfield9991 I must confess I didn't know who David Lindley was! I believe,if my memory serves me well, they were on tour across the ditch in Australia and came across on short notice, hence no band...a delight and a pleasure,as you say,to have seen them together.
From 1:58 to 2:34 is as perfect and crystalline an acoustic guitar solo as I can imagine. Concise, salient, technical perfection. Ry does in 36 seconds what some players never achieve in 70 years ... Django worthy!
Great song , so funky and Reggaeish ( is that a word ? ) . Great guitar and backing vocals . I saw a South Pacific island vocal trio do this once on a TV talent show . Arcapella . No guitars . They were great .
I guess I only have one thing to say,you can’t beat OLD-SCHOOL ROCK AND ROLL… Would love to go back in time to the 70’s and 80’s and stay there… The good old days, beats living in this shitty era it’s putrid now a days,no respect nothing..
Bob Turnbull- Amen! First heard this on vinyl in a little bohemian type restaurant I served at, the owner had SO many albums we played during work hours..Greatly influenced my musical tastes ( early 90's)
We were drinking Out of the blue this song came on all convos were dropped and me parents, aunty, uncles started singing first time i heard the song firt time i seen them that happy togetther. Cheers ry
such a great collaboration of artists and musicians on this song ....this truly an outstanding classic from the old days ...love it and thanks for posting it too ..
I am a young person but I must say I am very into my old songs my dad listens to back in the day songs and my mum listens to todays songs like pop and stuff...I love this song
Karl. Ry Cooder is a musical genius no doubt, and he is also a genius in collecting and appreciating world class talent. Everyone in this band is jaw dropping good
Both are good recordings. Like many well written songs, this one lends itself to different interpretations. Time and musical styles changed, but Ry Cooder made something new (and great) out of something that Elvis had nailed down many years earlier.
back up singer Terry and Bobbie were in the coaster also who are the back up singers here and way back i was with the drummer so i got to hear the rehearsals and it was so great, i remember one time i brought a big lunch of kentucky chicken for us all
Terry and Bobby did a couple great records and tours post Ry Cooder with Hans Theessink, too. The one I remember seeing live, they had a tuba instead of a bass, which somehow fit into the R&B groove just great.
Still brilliant.live a couple of times in london. His vocals work their heart out. During the course of his concerts they each get their moments of glory without him impinging on their performance.
What mean jam remember this growing up in Reseda back in the valley days late 70s!!! Reminds me of my mom who left the radio on in the kitchen on Sundays lol
This song reminds me of my younger SiS & I, hi Prickles. Easter's coming up, I'm dying to see ya, how about it, SiS, you & me? I love you full speed, cc. Just kidding, due to mind manipulation : ) 🖤🧐⛅🤠🤣⚰
This is the best version of a great song, and I say this with confidence never having heard any of the other versions…😉
It’s high on my top 10 list.

Was this song big in nz? I heard it growing up at home but this was in the 2000s
@@moonknight4053 yeah, it had some legs too, because all the pub bands loved to cover it.

Oh hello yes it was big...this is nz cover in its finest...xxx

" Does that count".🎉
My idea of great American Music which has captivated me for over 50 years
Fantastic song , excellent performance by ry cooder and the rest of the performers.
Still sounds great after all these years 💪🏽🎤😊
Thanks for making me feel good
WHAT A HAPPY BUMPING SONG 👍, I USUALLY PLAY IT SEVERAL TIMES IN A ROW ❤🤣🤣🤣

Oooooh Yeeees !
You're absolutely right!
Yup, what an amazing musician. Hmm, may also put Richard Thompson up there with Ry. I'd listen to either. Just get it playing...
And the ecstatic look and body language on the bass player as he watches and participates with genius!
Yep, doesn't get any better than this.
Django Reinhard, too.. one of the first, best!! 😉
I was a teenager back in the 70s when I heard this song with my Poppa, ❤RIP POPPA❤️👍💯🔥...

No one ever bent a note like Ry Cooder
Neil Young enters the chat. In fact the champion of it.
Ry Cooder is so brilliant and he always has all world bands
The whole band looks like they're having a gas - then why wouldn't you with such an awesome song and talent.
Great Ry Cooder!
best version, back up singers make the song
must disagree- I saw Ry Cooder do this SOLO-no backup singers- just him and guitar. A younger Ry-Very Clear- no others hogging the camera----Super.
Karl. Ry Cooder is a musical genius no doubt, and he is also a genius in collecting and appreciating world class talent. Everyone in this band is jaw dropping good
Karl Wood is there a video of him playing that solo version. I’d love to see that.
@@billmavin1815 the back up singers make the song great!
@S***** like he says he "must disagree" kind of says it all. LOL!
Thanks Ry for this great song
I see Jim Keltner got on his lear jet and made this shoot, even brought Tim Drummond from Neil Youngs "Stray Gators" I believe.
Where has his brilliant style music gone ? So 'off the cuff' and instantaneous !
The first digitally recorded album in pop music history.
