    Hello Toby,
RE the CATERPILLAR box. I forwarded this video to my friend, Dave Hoffman, who now runs Hoffman Construction, the addressee of the box. He recalls, as a young man, picking up shipments of parts for his dad’s multiple 2U, D8s. It’s amazing how a cardboard box survived all these years to become a Collector’s item and touched the life of one who likely had his hands on it half a century ago! Keep up the good work..

Just a note on shipping with Greyhound. A little more than 40 years ago as a student at the University of Minnesota I worked evenings as a courier driver. Monday through Friday I picked up Tractor parts from an Allis Chalmers Parts distribution center as well as a Ford tractor parts distribution center both about a mile apart from each other in Southwest Bloomington. Most of the parts I picked up got dropped off at the Minneapolis post office. But every day there were some larger parts that went to the Greyhound bus depot in Minneapolis. Apparently, Greyhound could quickly get them to another Greyhound depot near the dealer and the dealer would make regular trips to Greyhound to pick up those parts.

Fantastic video Toby. You found alot of great finds. But 60 bucks for that H crank, cam, and gasket kits was a steal of a deal! Nice to see senior found some great finds. And yes senior should do a video for us. Thanks for sharing your finds Toby. Looking forward to the future videos. Cheers

I love the wooden box. If it was a Gerstner it would be a pot of gold. They still restore their wooden boxes to OEM. Highly sought after by machinists. I have the exact same Starrett indicator in the same sliding toolbox. I would love to see a close up of the boring head . It looks like someone took a small compound slide from a lathe and made a boring head out of it.

My high school had a heavy equipment class. A past teacher liked to go to military auctions to get equipment. We ended up with a 7m series d7 and a 2u series d8. Both of which had mags very similar to those. Sparked a happy memory. Very cool. (I was in high school like 2 years ago, they still have equipment that old)

Our Super M had that big metal pulley on it just like the one you showed. Also our H had the smaller paper pulley you show. Brought back alot of memories of filling silo as a youngster. We had a long table blower that folded up and was belt driven by usually the H then latet the Super M. Forage wagon had a cable driven push out the back cause the back opened up to feed the blower and you help feed it with a hoe like forks. The wagons used a portable drive unit we would connect to push the chopped grass or corn out the back.We had a barn fire in the mid 60s and lost all our equipment that was stored inside . Luckily we only had 1 tractor in that old barn the rest were in storage in other areas. So we bought all new forage and hay equipment. Ended up with a PTO driven New Holland blower and 2 Gheyl forage wagons and chopper. New Holland rake baler and sickle bar mower and a New Idea crusher. I started to miss the old belt driven blower but not those old wagons. Our first live pto tractor was purchased then also which was a International 460 gas. It replaced the M doing the bigger jobs. Little trip down memory lane.

What a sweet review from you and Senior. The micrometers are a sweet deal, these can cost a lot if you wanna get a complete set. 20$ for a NOS crankshaft? What a deal , that is almost as paying just scrap price for the thing. Also the NOS pieces should be very good quality stuff to put into your tractor. Excited to see the magneto rebuild and thanks for adding the picture of where it exactly was located on the tractor. I wonder what that giant belt pully was used/designed to drive? Maybe a very big trashing machine?

On the Bright Side for that Armature Tester? Its 110% Repairable. About the only part in it that >will< need to be deeply inspected and probably replaced is... the wires due to corrosion, at its age it can be green to the middle in a few places and be real brittle, ohm it out and flex the wires and it'll tell you if its bad. Also the Capacitors typically turn to goo inside and when you apply any juice to them they smoke and pop.... or pop then smoke. Still repairable, even if it blows up. Old School test equipment was 110% repairable, most of the parts were off the shelf at ... *sigh* Radio Shack, or the Rexall Drug Store.... damn I'm old.

12:22 always a pleasure when Sr. is on the channel.
14:40 beauty! Those are really good quality calipers. That's heirloom grade. I have the next size up set myself and am piecing a set of smaller ones as well.
16:01 that's a great looking box, honest one. Nobody has tried "fixing it up", which usually ends up messing them. I have steel ones, because i'm 110% afraid i'd break a wooden one. I still haven't touched grandpa's box, cleaned it out, put some preserving wood oil on it and left it be. Too much of a klutz for these gems. I hear a little bit of wallnut core rubbed on the bottom of the wood rails helps with sliding the drawers when they're loaded to bear. edit: for the key, figure out which of the boxes that is (brand that is) and then look for the keys online. People have repros and means to figure out which you need for most of these old boxes. All of my steelies came without a key and the online community got me keys for each and every one of them.

They had a similar trick with the old Caterpillar starting engines, where they’d wedge a wooden shim beneath the heavy flywheel to hold it up off of the main bearing so that it wouldn’t be vibrating while the tractor was operating. Fortunately, with so few hours being put on these machines now, it’s not a concern anymore 👍

Pretty much all inline 4 and opposed 4 engines 4 stroke engines have been using "flat plane" cranks forever. (VW engines and horizontally opposed 4 cylinder aircraft engines also have 180 degrees between crank throws) Anything else would have an uneven distribution of power impulses around the crank rotation. "Flat plane" really only has significance in the context of V-8 engines, where there are other arrangements. If it's a crank for an L4 engine, you'd be hard pressed to name an L4 engine whcih doesn't have the throws all 180 degrees from each other.
