I remember, as you do, when 125s weighed barely 100kgs. 130kgs means a bike feels safer and more grown-up. Yet today's 125s will easily hold 65mph which is absolutely fine for today's roads. Great vid, as always. Thanks.

Had a look at one of these today at the local Suzuki dealership. Anyone restricted to 125cc would be crazy not to try one out. They look amazing and the build quality is way beyond what you would expect for the price. Please Suzuki bring a 400cc twin like this to the market and put some pressure on the Ninja 400.

I have this bike in the blue motogp colour and i personally think it looks the best in... and honestly I got soooo many compliments on this bike from other bike owners. I absolutely love it, and if I'll get a bigger bike i will still keep this one. And for a 125cc it's very fast I do 135km/h on it and i dont do more cause i live on a small island in Europe and we have no long roads, so 135km/h than i let off the throttle not cause it reached it's limits.

  • @MrTacklebury

My honda 110 CT was my first full motorcycle and it still looks almost new. It's a great little bike, but is missing the speed quotient of this one. The main reason I don't ride it more is with someone my size on main roads, it'll only do 45 to 50 mph. With idiots about these days, I don't like not being able to keep up to the posted limit at least. Mine is from the last model year in 1986 and a bit rare these days. I still love it for puttering around the trails behind my dad's place, which is where it resides. 8) It's the only bike my wife would ride except the one we did our test on. The Suzuki TU250. Thanks for giving an honest review for a perhaps more maligned model.

Yeah, I've got it in blue (and added some Motul/Ecstar stickers, yay team Ecstar (Iannone and Rins did real good in Aragón))! With the sportspack (windshield, single seat cover, carbon decor, yellow rim decals), though without the tail tidy/fender eliminator and exhaust upgrade (don't seem to be a lot of legal ones around. On a Gixxer a Yoshimura is sorta must, but the R-77S that's out there for it is not road-legal. Exan has the X-Black EVO (XS19-C00-XEN) which seems to be CE/Homologated, but it comes at a price. And the 125cc won't sound anywhere near that symphony the Moto2 Triumph produces, so might as well forget about that and save up for the next bike... a 2nd hand Triumph Daytona 675R.

I'm happy to know these are in the UK, I used to see alot of SUZUKI GXSR but the 150cc range scattered about in Bangladesh a bit because most of the people in the Village I live in drive these though as I said the 150cc variant which I find hilarious.
When I found one in some random area and saw it close I really liked sitting on it and looking at it's gadgets though never drove one,, what's also funny is that I found another one that looked more beefy then the others and best of all it was my next door nabours one so it wouldn't matter if I did anything to it.
Though next time I go Bangladesh, I'm hoping to drive one because of the fact that a CBT isn't compulsory here like most asian countries. Good video though.

As a mature rider, I prefer the GSX125S naked upright riding postion, sadly this version does not look as pretty as the faired R model.
If you are up for a challenge, please see if you can blag a test ride on the Keeway RKF125 @ £2499.
I bet the chinese build quality is just as good as these Indonesian made mini-gixers (S model @ £3899. Moto GP colour £3799. plain colours)

Many comments on here about the cost of this bike. I think you should review some previously owned "affordable" bikes some time Mr MF. Don't get me wrong, I love what you do, you're the best reviewer and general MC journalist on the web, imho. Reviews of bikes on the market for less than £4,000 would be brilliant though, as cost is a major issue for many of us, and not just the learner riders.

I'm slowly starting to feel like an old fart about now at 32, so I'm late to the game. But I gave myself a 125cc entry in my driver's licence for my (31th) birthday last year (full licence would've been possible, but getting one is way more cumbersome here in Austria than doing an afternoon course for 125cc and be done with it). Since, I've rented/tried a couple of different bikes. Having been a fan of the MotoGP since like the Rossi/Biaggi/Gibernau/etc days I've always been meaning to play man VS machine myself. But everyone kept keep saying 'go buy a supermoto or a Duke', which never appealed to me. But... I went to a dealer and sat on a RC390 (same chassis as the RC125) and noticed how aggressive the seatingposition was, putting load on the wrists. Ok... the 125 Duke then. Took it out for a spin, but I felt the footpegs were still placed too far to the back, causing the body to lean forwards and as well putting pressure on the wrists. The throttle response was great on the accelleration but too aggressive when closing the throttle, dipping the front and coupled with braking smashing the crown jewels against the fueltank. Not much of a fan of the new Alien bug headlights either, but I will say the instrument display is out of this world, even trumps the baby Gixxer. Ultimately though... no KTM for me.
Did manage to get a Yamaha dealer to organize a MT-125 and although it felt well-built, it wasn't very exciting and when I rode it in windy conditions I didn't feel very safe. So I figured I did want something with more fairings. Guess the YZF-R125 could've been that, but I was unable to try one out and for being the manufacturer behind the great Rossi, I find that bike a little lacklustre. Always liked the Aprilia RS125, but there wasn't any I could try out. Did manage to rent their Tuono 125, which is probably the same thing with a little less sporty looks and seating position. That one I bonded quite well with (took one out on several occassions)! It was superb to drive. It did feel like it lacked a little performance and the gauge cluster was a little barebones, there was no fuel or gear indicator and had the speedometer read bug out and read '0' whilst driving. Just didn't do it enough for me to buy one (same for the Rieju RS3 125).
Any other contenders then? Well, the Honda CBR125R kinda looked dog old, like an early 2000s or something Honda NSR125R. Of course it is old, they've should've updated that a while ago already... can't even buy one around here anymore. They did bring out the CB125R in the all new Neo Café Racer line-up, which kinda looks alright for a modern retro. But the Duke and MT-125 sorta proved to me a Superbike-style motorbike is what I ultimately wanted and Honda doesn't deliver the figures allowed in the class (15HP, 11kW). In Asia there's no 125cc class, there they're allowed up to 150cc, so all our 125cc bikes are 150cc bikes over there. In Asia the CBR150R received a facelift and the Repsol livery on it looks absolutely smashing: autodaily.vn/2016/07/can-canh-honda-cbr150r-2016-phien-ban-repsol-tai-ha-noi/ . Why can't we have that over here? That would've been my pick!
Luckily Suzuki was working on the GSX-R125... it was supposed to launch end of the summer... but time passed and nothing happened. Then suddenly we were treated with a bunch of press day riding impressions and everyone was so excited about the bike! I knew I had to wait for it. Which took like until end of october. I went on a test drive and I immediately fell in love with the riding position and handling characteristics. I wasn't much of a fan of how the headlights look on photos, but luckily in reallife it isn't that bad (it's still not pretty and I would've prefered something a bit more aggressive like so: i.imgur.com/wq9jN0Y.gif , but oh well). Figured it wasn't worth having a bike over winter... but I did want to benefit from the introductory price of 3990 EUR (instead of 4650), so I put down a deposit in picked it up earlier in may this year. I'm more of a sundays rider and went to seek out some Austrian twisties on quite a few occassions. The bike has been great. It's been quite a while now since the initial 1000km check-up (where they did the recall service (yes, it was recalled)), top speed I've one time managed to do was an indicated 138km/h. Definitely has the best power/weight ratio and performance in the class. There's been quite a few people asking about the bike, overall they really seem to like it and think it's a bigger machine than it really is. So... #noregrets. Definitely THE bike to consider in its class.
Kawasaki seems to have watched from the sidelines and decided to respond with a similar product to the GSX-R125, namely the Ninja 125 returning to the 125cc supersport and naked (Z125, like the Suzuki GSX-S125) after a long absence as well. Not all details are out yet, but it looks like they've managed to pull off a winner as well! See: thetoughestchoice.com/product-ninja125.html . Shapewise even looks better than the baby Gixxer, dare I say (although I prefer the blue livery of the Suzukis). Press have been raving about their Ninja 400 which seems to be a blast to ride, getting similar feedback to the GSX-R125. So that will be an interesting one to follow.
But... I mainly bought the GSX-R125 to gain some experience with a motorcycle that's not too intimidating and explore more of the countryside out of the city of Vienna before I migrate back to where my roots are: The Netherlands. There it's simpler to get a full motorcycle licence. I already did my research and unless Triumph makes a Daytona based on the for the Moto2 developed 765cc, I'll be looking at getting a 2nd hand 2011 or so Triumph Daytona 675R (pcarbon bits and bobs, Öhlins suspension, Brembo brakes, quickshifter, Arrow under-the-seat exhaust, etc). That mentioned Ninja 400 has been on the radar as well and so has the Honda CBR500R been... but the Daytona is on a whole different level and the sound... THE SOUND! xD
Oh well. I just noticed the length of my post. Do excuse me. But you must know how it is getting so passionate about motorbikes. :P

If you ride a 125 at 70mph in 5th gear, at what point do you decide to use 6th gear?

No he ain't. Numbers would've gone up much faster if it was km/h, plus, that would've been untypical in the UK.
You might not hit enough performance to go 6th gear with headwind. But I went 138km/h with one in the most favourable conditions and then you definitely need it.

When you ride one of the small capacity bikes or scooters, you always start out by saying how much you love these small machines. .but in this review you say that you expected the Suzuki to be "just a 125. Uninspiring, quite boring, nothing very exciting about that". Colour me confused.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hmm, you got me there - I never promised to make sense!! I guess what I'm saying is I'm never usually that excited about riding a 125 but when I do I always like them and I get reminded that small bikes aren't necessarily boring (I love my 250cc CRF for example - doesn't go very fast but boy is it a hoot to rag)....

@@TheMissendenFlyer Ha ha!...TMF..stainless steel spade there!....well dug out ...and quick!..wouldn't worry aboot that critic, your review is great, and your comments came over to me to be clear as a bell,it's all down to just being a figure of speech....so to speak?! I have the Honda CBR125R 2014 facelift,in Red/White/Blue ,have had it since two months old,it had 210 miles [yes!....MILES!],on it when I bought it,now in 2019,it STILL has only 400-odd miles on the clock!I had a near -fatal car crash only a couple of weeks after buying the bike, and couldn't ride for three and a half years, due to severe neck whiplash and other injuries.
The bike feels, and looks like a bigger bike, and is extremely comfortable, but I think, for going to the trouble of giving the bike a facelift,to attract more young,[and older "born-agains"...like me!],riders, they could have added a few more H.P.!
Having said that, the little bike does most of what I want it to do..have fun on dry twisties,[chicken strips don't come into my vocabulary....I have felt the tarmac several times as a pillion....in the old days of the 60's...and it hurts!]...No ,you get a bit more common sense as you reach into the 3/4 part of your century of life, and it's still great to be oot and aboot, ridin' the back roads, preferably in the dry weather!
I have ridden in some stinking British weather up here in beautiful Northumbria, around the luvly coastline, with a strong north wind/gale coming in from the North Sea,[out of nothing!....calm to gales in minutes!],around the Cheviot Hills, great fun,but the worst was on a summer's evening,at Boulmer,Northumberland, when it turned from a gorgeous sunny evening into the heaviest hailstone shower you have ever seen....[or heard though your lid!!],and that turned to a thunderstorm, with rain stotting 6 inches from the ground!.
I had to ride very slowly around the twisty to find a safe place to pull over, when I came behind slow moving cars.
As we got round next bend, the standing water got deeper....and deeper....and deeper....till it was up to the sump,[maybe even deeper..]..I had difficulty keeping my feet on the pegs,as the wake from the cars in front kept washing back down me...it was scary not being able to see any of the road surface at all,for about 100 yards, and I was being battered by this North wind and pelted by the heavy rain...couldn't see half of the time...
I was relieved to be able to pull in to the RAF Station entrance gates, and was HIGHLY amused when I lifted my visor to have a coffee out of my flask.....I was confronted by a retired TORNADO aircraft mascot,it's menacing, but gorgeous, air intakes glaring down at me....what a sight for sore eyes,to lift you out of the most stinkingest ride of the year!
Aye!,nowt wrang wi thi little Honda...absoloutlely bulletproof!!
Mind, aam still tempted to check the new Gixxa and Ninja's!
      Cheers,Marra!

Such a small bike but at a fraction under 300 pounds in weight, or just over 21 stones! Suzuki Thailand must be using some very heavy plastic !! 21 stones ! That’s like trying to manhandle a really fat bloke around your garage! And made in Thailand for £4100, And what have they done to the graphics? Certainly doesn’t say suzuki down the side in big white letters! UKI maybe?
