Hey all. This one might look a bit different as we filmed the GoPro bits in 4K. Land footage from the phone is still 1080. I also had to learn Final Cut Pro instead of iMovie so there’s a few things like sound levels I’m currently struggling with. Hope you enjoy! There will be an episode 0 covering the travel days to get to Bonaire but I wanted to lead with this one :)
The closest I have come to scuba diving is playing Subnautica, which doesn't give me much confidence because I got eaten. 🤥 Stay safe, don't get eaten and I am glad to finally start watching these new videos!
We got experimental with a few things as I'm easily entertained particularly when I'm in a store. As a result we had a running joke about a box of hagelslag I bought expecting them to be something like teddy grams
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes I had to look up teddy grams... The dutch have annoying taste in their 'hagelslag', they use bad chocolate or other weird things in it. The belgian version is much better with proper chocolate 😄
Ya! New Masotaters videos. Those underwater shots look really nice, bright colors and clear. 80s sounds GREAT! it is 10 degrees outside here in Minnesota, and headed down into the negatives tonight. Brrrrr!! Bring on the tropical exploits.
Thanks! I wasn't really happy with how things came out in Socorro / Komodo so I actually upgraded our GoPro and started filming in 4k/60fps. Seems to have had a real positive effect though granted the fact that most things in Bonaire are relatively shallow and in clear water really helped. Day 2 I also started using this wide angle wet lens that I think improved things even further. Filming hiking footage is so much simpler :)
Looks like a nice dive destination. Haven’t dived Bonaire, but love diving in the Caribbean. Have done several live aboard dive trips in Grand Cayman. You look like Hulk Hogan in that yellow buff!
We really liked it particularly the fact we could go out on our own vs the typical boat dive where you're stuck as part of a herd. We felt like we were able to see a lot more
Please let me know we say hi! She was super nice to us considering we were just a sweaty pair of randos paddling up to their dock trying to get to our AirBNB
It was amazing. I just wish I'd gone here when I was newly certified instead of that frantic florida trip. This was better in pretty much every single way. Well, except there weren't roving bands of herpes infected monkeys to go looking for in Bonaire...
Hey, moving to Palm Springs means you're within driving distance of a world class diving destination. Look at Laguna Beach and Catalina Dive Park diving. I have videos of both on my channel but I'm sure there are better ones out there. I actually love diving out here except for the whole cold thing.
@ I get it. Cold water sucks in a lot of ways. I keep saying I want to switch to a dry suit but that’s a lot of money on more equipment that could also be spent actually diving. Oil rigs out here are just epic though
I've been to Bonaire twice and stayed at the Buddy Dive Resort in 2001. Bonaire is my favorite place to dive and the resort Drive and Dive package is unbeatable. The drive-to dives were better than the boat dives. Check out the 1000 Steps dive site. It does look like the reefs have taken a hit... I remember pristine tropical reefs. Regardless, enjoy your stay and I look forward to your videos.
Yea, we figured that out. We did one set of boat dives on day 3 I think it was and then promptly decided to just not use the other 4 since it was such a downgrade from shore diving on our own. East Cost Divers to Turtle City was kind of different and neat though. We did 1000 Steps once along with most of the other sites up there along that road with a few repeats.
Ha, lost opportunity. I actually only had a very short clip of it because I was busy running across the store like a madman scaring all the nice dutch folks to let Blondie know I'd found her exotic corn.
thank you for naming the fish, they are so pretty, ever get to see dolphins or sharks? it is pretty there. long way to dive, no other places as nice closer? ever dive off calif with the great white sharks? I hope not. good to see you guys together, looks like fun I took a introductory class once in diving they made us sit in a pool under water breathing with a tank pretty cool.
If you watch the Socorro videos from last Christmas we had some dolphin encounters and also a fair number of sharks. They aren't quite the threat that movies make them out to be (similar to bears) and are more of a treat to come across. We dive in SoCal when we can and we've also gone to Indonesia, Utah, Arizona, Florida, Mexico, and even Canada.
Fun fact: detached tentacles of Portugese Man of War jellyfish can be found floating around the ocean and I had one wrap around my leg off the Outer Banks one summer vacation. I had welts for days.
Biggest annoyance are the flights. We initially decided against Bonaire when planning out the year last winter because they were all ridiculously expensive during the holidays. Post injury we were a little more desperate to do something and found they had dropped to a little over a thousand. It looks like going forward $1k is pretty much the norm LAX -> Bonaire under the timing restrictions Jen's job puts on us. Buddy Dive wise it's a package. We made a mistake in retrospect getting the package with boat dives included so next time we'll get the standard one week Drive & Dive which is around $1,400 per person for a week without any sales. That includes lodging, breakfast, and unlimited Nitrox fills. The vehicle they include is manual so we paid an extra $240 for an automatic. Beyond that it was about $240 in tourist and marine park fees for us. We had some additional grocery and gas costs which are obviously YMMV. Overall it's a great value for what we got though I wise we could manage cheaper flights
Yea, and a lot of value for the money vs say our diving trip out to Florida. We saved a bit for a return trip next year by booking during Buddy Dives black friday sale. Just have to figure out the plane flights now.
I don't personally care for music on normal hiking videos since it drowns out all the sounds of footsteps and nature. Raw underwater footage on the other hand sounds pretty horrific. Best I can describe is darth vader being beaten to death in the middle of an asthma attach. Hence the music. Also I did use music for the highlight reel videos I liked so much from the Mississippi
Time usually fixes this sort of thing so I'm mostly just trying to stay busy while it works itself out. And not to any more damage. Lots of diving and biking at the moment

So great to see a posting from you guys again. Lovely underwater shots of your dive. So beautiful there. Thanks!
THANK YOU I was really missing the walking show. You do a great job in the water too! Yes, maps are GOOD.
Thanks for sharing! Bonaire is my favorite place! I will get back there one day soon.
The dive videos are a nice change of pace from the hiking journey. I hike a little, but I'll probably never dive so these are great.
I discovered your channel a little while ago and have been watching your Mississippi River videos. What an amazing adventure that must have been!

Very nice video! Please keep making them, I really enjoy your adventures.
Looks awesome have fun!
Nice to see you guys again ! Beautiful one and the delight of seeing my own language . Had somehow forgotten Bonaire was still Dutch speaking .
Hey Y'all, looks to have been a great day. I got to hear tater giggles. Happiness all round.
So beautiful! The Dutch on the food packages made me look up the history of the Island, great to learn something new :)

Nice to see you guys again and awesome video! Nice touch with the "freeze frame" on what appeared to be corn. lol
Thanks, Aww Matt beautiful great job,I’ve been on two of the ABC islands but not Bonair. ✌🏻👊🏼
Welcome back. Good to see you guys again.
Beautiful! Glad you had fun!

It's been years since i last went diving, but i can still remember the crunching parrot fish sounds.
Man, I haven't been diving in more than 30 years. This makes me want to try it again. Looks like a fantastic trip.
Not to encourage behavior that can/will be a negative financial impact on your life. But you totally should start diving again :)
Thanks for identifying the fish.
You're welcome. It's hard when there's a massive pile of different species but I try and call them out if I'm focusing on something
Amazing! Thank you for sharing. Loved it.
Glad you enjoyed it :) These don't do near as well for us numbers wise vs the hiking videos but we really enjoy them

So cool to see you both again!! Chatted yesterday with lady with tortoise (Mississippi river trip ) here in Mn.
Please let me know we say hi! She was super nice to us considering we were just a sweaty pair of randos paddling up to their dock trying to get to our AirBNB
For sure.. will say “Hi”. Our paths cross during a local trivia contest. She is a member of “Vodoo Panties”. They are arch enemies of our team.
That looks like a great place for divers. I hope you had fun. Thanks for sharing.

Having just moved from the Lower Keys to Palm Springs, this is killing me! Enjoy Bonair and dive safe.

I've dove the kelp beds in Monterey almost 30 years ago.. After 20+ years in Florida, I can't dive cold water.

16:41 Admirable restraint displayed by not saying "corn" during one-second irony freeze.

Ouch, aren't you the lucky one. I've run into salps and such drifting in the blue water off the oil rigs out here but that's a first :)
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes ooh, I learned about a new creature! Never heard of salps before.
They look really bizarre. First time we had a big string of them float by my first thought was that I must be hallucinating. The ocean is awesome
yes it iis cold in fla now and still cleaning up from helen
The FTA trail maintenance efforts have always blown me away.
If you don't mind sharing, what is the budget for a trip like this? Looks like a fabulous spot to dive.

Awesome videos, been following you a long time. Why are you not allowed to wear dive gloves? Have a great time and we’ll be watching.
Some areas don't allow gloves because without them people generally have an aversion to touching the rocks and coral due to the risk of getting stung.
Good video. Nice endoresment for Bonaire. What currency do they use? Have fun. Good Luck, Rick
Everything we paid for was US dollar.
Well that's different..
Sooo weird hearing background music on one of your videos
