As a casual speedrun viewer SM64 feels the most weird and interesting from a strategy standpoint. This feels like the longest game where world record runners are using strategies that can save like less than 10 seconds with huge risk. Most other runs that have skips like that save like over a minute with usually multiple tries just being part of the run if it's a bad try at the skip instead of a one shot.
I think this is a testament to how well-made SM64 really is as a game. It doesn't really try to force the player to play a certain way, and the mechanics of the game are pretty simple and solid (even with the glitches following from that era of gaming). Add in that every stage is very "episodic" and it raises the skill ceiling quite a lot. On the other hand, games that have glitches that provide huge skips and time saves tend to be more linear or "gated" in their progressions. RPGs, cut-scene heavy games, or games with strict mechanics/flags/keys (Legend of Zelda, Metroid, etc) come to mind. Though, it's still a bit unfair to compare a SM64 120+ stars run to some any% category in a game with heavy time-saves glitches. Because you can technically use glitches in SM64 to skip _huge_ chunks of the game and complete it in less than 10 minutes by collecting 0 or 1 star. The categories do end up playing a role in strategies used.
I am so proud of Cheese. I've been following him for quite some time, watching him grind, lose faith in himself, keep grinding, all of the dialogue with his viewers about how he felt about Mario, and everything. Then watching him get that record, vindicate himself, watching the confidence and self value get back up. It was a magical moment. Cheese is a great streamer and a complete pleasure to watch. I also love YOUR Videos Karl, you got me into the speedrunning scene to begin with when you made the videos about Doom. You're both legends, thank you for everything!
15:05 This! 100% This! One of the most important things when you are trying to be the best, or at least compete with them is believing that you belong there! That being said, Cheese's reactions and popoffs are always just so genuine and awesome, and I really do love, while still finding it absolutely crazy, that people are still finding new tricks and glitches in a game that is so old!
Liam does seem like a stone cold operator. He does seem a little terrifying. I never doubted Cheese's abilities for a second. I actually thought this run was slower than I expected in the end after all the build up for a 6 second takeover I thought it would be like, 40 or something. Mark my words, we will be here again in 3 years and Cheese will have a sub 1:38 WR. mark my words.
All this, and it's STILL not fully optimized. We've got a good 20-30 seconds immediately available to shave off. It certainly won't be easy, but I believe the amazing runners all working at it can definitely make it happen. 1:36 will be broken. Probably not too soon, but within a few years, at most.
it should be interesting to see if/when liam can take the lead back considering he seems to be able to rival cheese. seeing cheese beat liam definitely makes things exciting for the future of super mario 64 speed running since this could spark a rivalry that pushes the game to its limits even more than it already has
I never watch speed runs but I love this channel. It's this wonderful niche world that I fully support and love learning about even though I'm not really interested in jumping in any deeper.
To think that Simply's recent PB was faster than Cheese for 80% of the run and only choked with 20 minutes left is also kind of insane to think about. Simply has a video on his channel comapring the top 4 speedruns of 120 star it's a really interesting video.
Liams record was really amazing. As karl said he seemed untouchable. And while not putting cheese down, i really didnt see him pull it off. But then it happened this fast lol. Insane. Dudes a legend
Are you not allowed to have a coach monitor your splits for you? In athletics, oftentimes the athletes can't see a clock/timer and don't know what their split times are during the event. But they can see their coach who will signal them to push the pace or keep the pace. It definitely helps to manage nerves, especially during longer events like these speedruns, when you can have a 3rd party simply telling you "You're doing good, you're on pace" instead of watching the clock yourself the whole time
One thing to consider is not doing the low percentage tricks when you don't need them could be better for the sport when these records get traded back and forth the game stays more relivent because the record seems obtainable so more people continue to grind out runs. Rather than some games that just seem to go dark for years until a new glitch is found.
Liam is gonna improve, but Cheese lose about 5-8 secs in tinny mistakes and the run was basically not serious until he saw the chance of doing something, battle is gonna be legendary... You guys think is posible to beat the 1:37 mark?
I’m sure someone has already made the comparison, but the situation that Liam created by raising the skill floor required to match him reminded me a lot of what Nindiddeh did in SMS. Life is just a loop.
Cheese watched your video about Liam on his stream. At the end he said he could feel the competition rising in him. That he wanted to get the world record back. I wonder how badly Liam is going to want it back after this video... I'm excited to see what comes next! Also, when Cheese broke the record, he only had 3 hours to stream before he had to do other things... I don't know why but that makes it even more impressive to me
I love this guy's voice, it's synonymous with a thorough and well put together video. Also I like being called a legend lol, great videos as always and I'm writing this at 0:01 lol
I really never could have imagined that this game, which I first played in a Target kiosk when I was 7, would gain this kind of... clout. Still being played, still being pushed, and like the master Cheese himself, not going anywhere anytime soon.

I'm so glad he hit a new wr, since his perseverance is admirable and reactions are amazing. ty for covering this absolute legend once again!
Well, he even has a video of him talking about mental health, in which he admits he sees therapist (at least partially because of speedrunning - didn't see all of it, so can't speak for sure)
@@hitofuuki well, the ocd component is understandable in a way, but tendonitis, a physical injury? That sucks man, unlike musicians / others theres just no way to properly mash or do certain movements!
Karl, you are amazing for your work in chronicling speedrunning. These videos are so well edited and scripted to really elevate the retelling to the heights deserving of the work put in by these runners.
I watch Cheese regularly, and this was inevitable. The strats cheese implement and how tough he is on himself with runs, it was literally WR or bust for him. Cheese has strats that no other runner can do consistently and should have absolutely obliterated Liams record.
Karl, finally got onto Manscaped because of you. Thanks for your % off code, and was a no brainer to support you through the affiliate program. Now, every time I look at myself in the mirror, I think of you- I see you. My lawn is reborn.
Taking risks in 120 star requires some courage for sure. If you fail a risky strat, you might lose a run over an hour long. That's painful. But it's good to see taking risks paid off :) Also it was so inspiring to see Cheese developing alternate mashing technique due to his injury. That is some real dedication there, not even injury can prevent a pro speedrunner from reaching their goal! :)
Hi Karl, I really love your videos, the depth, the history, and the spotlight you put on the lesser known parts of the gaming community. I just thought you should know that, thanks for all the great content and keep up the good work. :)
your videos are almost the only thing I follow in relation to speedrunning as a whole but the way you compose them and the way you provide details and history and then shine a spotlight on the special moments really is amazing and evokes a lot of feeling from me. Keep up the good work.
Speed running doesn't interest me outside of watching Karl's videos on it. I have tremendous respect for the skill and dedication this type of hobby requires, even if the details don't interest me. I loved it when he tore his shirt. I was literally laughing out loud when I saw that, and realized I was watching someone truly enjoying some good clean fun and watching their hard work pay off. I can't help but get warm fuzzies over that.
Best part is earlier in the run he made a mistake and explicitly said "well shirt is safe I guess". The shirt was lied to and it's trust betrayed. Cancel cheese for this atrocity.
You know I think a huge part of the appeal of speed running for people who don't take part or ever intend to is the genuine and amazing communities built around it, like it's so refreshing to see people supporting each other, especially in a competition
That background music in the beginning... That was from the SNES game Diddy's Kong Quest, wasn't it? Man... the nostalgia. Haven't heard that in years but I have such fond memories of playing that game with my at the time best buddy. Great video, as usual!
The determination and effort these speedrunners make is incredible. I would love to know what they do outside of speedrunning because with that work ethic and attention to detail, if applied to other things, would be incredible.
I always love cheese's reactions. While a lot of SM64 runners feel low energy/almost dead inside, cheese is always the guy to genuinely freak out at his own achievements. RIP shirt (literally).
@@Koalaz1 but if they can look into the data of the game, witch ppl back in the days couldn t have acces to so easy, it s not really fair. Others just relied on skill n experience. It s not fair.
@Professor Thinker the op is right numbnuts, knowing frame data in a game allowed many modern players to beat records. There is a huuuuge diference between playing the game based on skill and experience only and adding frame data to it.

You don't get that kind of PB WR consistency without having some serious skill, after all. ...especially when your game has real competition, due to being one of the most popular games to speedrun.
Its insane how the limits are continuing to be pushed in this game. I just started playing it recently for there first time and the controls are always giving me trouble, its wild just how perfect players like cheese have become over the years, I have a lot of respect for them
my former neighbour and classmate met Cheese twice at events and finally admitted having a crush on him(after annoying me with stories about him for about a year) - but being shy isnt helping although swore to me next time they meet-its risk time
It is a real treat to be here to witness this period in speedrunning. 10 years from now, speedrunning fans will be talking about this, either reminiscing, or lamenting that they weren't here to see it.
You know the interviews of the streamers made me think it would be cool if you had a series where you interviewed different runners popular and not. You could cover really obscure games like that too. I dunno if that's your kind of jam but I would watch the hell out of that.
To me one of the most interesting things about Cheese's run (and Liam's run) is that he made several mistakes during the run and still broke the record, which means we are still probably years away from the run being 100% completely optimized.
thats what i find most fascinating about insane world record runs. Sometimes theres some incredible run that the entire community goes insane over, and theres 5, 10, 60 seconds of time loss in the run. shows that a much better run can be made with the current strats if the runner just plays a bit better, which i have no doubt somebody will do.

22:00 Damn Cheese must be hitting those crunches hard in between runs.
Hey Karl. Just wanted to say that your videos are awesome!
Hey commentator, just wanted to comment that your comments are fantastic.
Also, I just ruined your 69th like. 😿
@@NullScar thank you dude. Also 69 haha funny number
_Karl:_ *”Hello, you absolute legends..”*

_Billy Mitchell:_ *”Put some respeKK on my name!”*
Oh man, and I was literally 10 minutes ago thinking "now that I think about it, havent seen a new Karl vid in a while".
Love to see these, great work
I was thinking this too
such a great journalist, or whatever he is. love karls vids
It's amazing how far speedruns have come, especially with Mario 64. Here's to many more years of both 64 and Karl Jobst and Cheese for that matter
He calls us legends, when in reality he is the legend. THANK YEW KARL
The speedrunning community is so lucky to have you document these achievements.
A credit to the community and this platform. Amazing.
15:05 This!
It’s awesome to see two friendly competitors go back-and-forth constantly, and push one another to improve.
"I don't know what to do." So I'll just hulkamaniac out of my shirt. LMAO
Probably not too soon, but within a few years, at most.
it should be interesting to see if/when liam can take the lead back considering he seems to be able to rival cheese. seeing cheese beat liam definitely makes things exciting for the future of super mario 64 speed running since this could spark a rivalry that pushes the game to its limits even more than it already has
Stickerbrush Symphony is so beautiful!
Was literally just about to go to bed then saw this had just been uploaded! Another 23:48 staying up wont hurt :)
It's a simple rule, if Karl posts a new video, you watch it! Even if your house is on fire, doesn't matter...you watch it now!
Liams record was really amazing. As karl said he seemed untouchable.
And while not putting cheese down, i really didnt see him pull it off.
But then it happened this fast lol. Insane.
Dudes a legend
Even if it was after timing ended, the greatest play of the run was him tearing his shirt off
he even said erlier i that run: "my shirt lifes another day"
The Hulk Hogan of speedrunning
Are you not allowed to have a coach monitor your splits for you? In athletics, oftentimes the athletes can't see a clock/timer and don't know what their split times are during the event. But they can see their coach who will signal them to push the pace or keep the pace. It definitely helps to manage nerves, especially during longer events like these speedruns, when you can have a 3rd party simply telling you "You're doing good, you're on pace" instead of watching the clock yourself the whole time
OMG, that shirt rip because Cheese just didn't know what to do with himself was *adorable* - his excitement was palpable! Congrats, Cheese!
One thing to consider is not doing the low percentage tricks when you don't need them could be better for the sport when these records get traded back and forth the game stays more relivent because the record seems obtainable so more people continue to grind out runs. Rather than some games that just seem to go dark for years until a new glitch is found.
It’s fascinating how Liam and Cheese are using strategies normally used by the shorter categories to optimize 121 Star.
Life is just a loop.
also what nero did
Cheese watched your video about Liam on his stream. At the end he said he could feel the competition rising in him. That he wanted to get the world record back.
I wonder how badly Liam is going to want it back after this video... I'm excited to see what comes next!
Also, when Cheese broke the record, he only had 3 hours to stream before he had to do other things... I don't know why but that makes it even more impressive to me
"The speedrunner Cheese would achieve this run" reminds me so much of Wirtuals "But then... Hefest got this run" lmao
Every time I'm having a bad day I can count on Karl to cheer me up with the "hello you absolute legend", what a legend.
Is he Pavlov and you a filthy cur?
That part is pretty cringe tbh
21:59 ripped cheese
I love this guy's voice, it's synonymous with a thorough and well put together video. Also I like being called a legend lol, great videos as always and I'm writing this at 0:01 lol
I really never could have imagined that this game, which I first played in a Target kiosk when I was 7, would gain this kind of... clout. Still being played, still being pushed, and like the master Cheese himself, not going anywhere anytime soon.
His reaction put genuine joy in my heart. That run was amazing.
I lost it when Cheese went hulk mode and ripped his shirt off.
Imagine cheese took a second and said "oh, I actually really loved that shirt"
It was a nice shirt
he even said erlier i that run: "my shirt lifes another day"
you can always get another shirt, but you might not get another proper shirt-ripping moment
he actually did say that, in the video a minute after that he goes "i ripped my nice shirt, why did i do that?" and it was so funny LMFAO
They pilot Mario like he were a fighter jet
cheese is such a joy to watch! I loved keeping up with his grind to master the more difficult or obscure strats so he could seamlessly slot them into his runs. I'm so glad he hit a new wr, since his perseverance is admirable and reactions are amazing. ty for covering this absolute legend once again!
cheese time loss in lava land where he thought about the "hot guy" and try collecting the wrong star lmao
Congrats to cheese, but hearing he got tendonitis from doing a run made me think about the personal cost of grinding world record runs.
Tendonitis generally heals by itself. It just has to be managed.
@@rjc276 yeah but once you get it once you need to be super careful to not make it flare up again.
I think he projects too much tension in his muscles on that area, he maybe exaggerates on the grip holding the controller, stiff wrists... maybe.
It’s funny to me how you can see his realization in real time, checks time, surprise doesn’t register until like a second later - Amazing
Karl, you are amazing for your work in chronicling speedrunning. These videos are so well edited and scripted to really elevate the retelling to the heights deserving of the work put in by these runners.
This entire video feels like you making the case advocating for the wider speedrunning community to start taking risks and going all out.
I watch Cheese regularly, and this was inevitable. The strats cheese implement and how tough he is on himself with runs, it was literally WR or bust for him. Cheese has strats that no other runner can do consistently and should have absolutely obliterated Liams record.
cheese also has alot of strats that he doesnt do and other runners do so its very balanced, hes not far ahead than the others
As a regular viewer, can you tell us whether he always rips his shirt off live on stream?
Cheese breaking that record LIVE for that money is the most clutch gaming moment ever imo
Karl, finally got onto Manscaped because of you. Thanks for your % off code, and was a no brainer to support you through the affiliate program. It's so great to now be a part of the speed running community- but instead of a video game, it's shaving. I'm still going for a sub 2-minute run. Now, every time I look at myself in the mirror, I think of you- I see you. My lawn is reborn.
lmao. Speedrunning trimming your pubic hair sounds like a risky proposition but hey, you do you.
@@Vonias why just shave off pubes when you could also shave off a few seconds from your PB?
WR in No Foreskin 100% category
@@stephencarmody5375 LMAO
Taking risks in 120 star requires some courage for sure. If you fail a risky strat, you might lose a run over an hour long. That's painful. But it's good to see taking risks paid off :)
Also it was so inspiring to see Cheese developing alternate mashing technique due to his injury. That is some real dedication there, not even injury can prevent a pro speedrunner from reaching their goal! :)
Love these videos with the clips from everyone's favorite runners, as well as simply.
I really hope Karl makes a vid on weegees new 120 star wr. That shit was mindblowing, and I think solidifies him as the sm64 goat
Karl Jobst explaining new Mario 64 world records is my favorite video genre.
Cheese did what anyone else wouldve done. He ripped his shirt.
My brain was just saying "I wonder if Karl has uploaded recently"
A whole minute earlier
Great video! Superbly edited and narrated. Loved the inclusion of cheese responding to questions, explaining his thought processes, etc.
If you like the storytelling aspect of Speedrun coverage you should check out the channel Summoning Salt.
Best part is earlier in the run he made a mistake and explicitly said "well shirt is safe I guess".
The shirt was lied to and it's trust betrayed. Cancel cheese for this atrocity.
@@Syllaren The shirt didn't suffer long, however
You know I think a huge part of the appeal of speed running for people who don't take part or ever intend to is the genuine and amazing communities built around it, like it's so refreshing to see people supporting each other, especially in a competition
I’ve recently tried replaying Mario 64 on the switch port and I forgot how difficult the game can be. These dudes are so damn good
That background music in the beginning... That was from the SNES game Diddy's Kong Quest, wasn't it? Man... the nostalgia. Haven't heard that in years but I have such fond memories of playing that game with my at the time best buddy.
Great video, as usual!
Thank you! I recognized a distinct part of this music, but i had no idea where it was from.
Ya know, I love seeing people getting new accomplishments in one of my childhood games. This game on the wii was nostalgia.
Wait, your childhood was this game on the Wii?
Damn, now i feel old. I was in my late Teens when this game was released on the N64 😅
@@christianstachl Yeah, I grew up with the wii and had mario 64 and many other games

Cheese saying "I don't know what the fuck to do" then ripping his blouse resonated with me lmao
What if these new records use some software and it s not just their skill? Nowadays it can be done.
there are ways to detect this, it wouldnt get past the moderators now a days.
@@Koalaz1 but if they can look into the data of the game, witch ppl back in the days couldn t have acces to so easy, it s not really fair. Others just relied on skill n experience. It s not fair.
@Justin Macarrhur i mean there are easy ways to see if its a tool assisted run or spliced without looking at the data of the game. only the video.
@Professor Thinker i just asked around more and i was right. I m guessing you re just upset.
@Professor Thinker the op is right numbnuts, knowing frame data in a game allowed many modern players to beat records. There is a huuuuge diference between playing the game based on skill and experience only and adding frame data to it.
I realize that chasing world record is not just chasing the fame of the best or the place where you look down those who cant tpuch to you but a quest of calling out to those out there that the speed run community of the game are still living, and keep doing thier best not just keepibg the game alive but keepibg love and fire in thier heart
I'm genuinely happy to know you're doing better man.
On another note, hearing Cheese's name come up again, is not exactly a surprise
Yeah, seeing Cheese back with the SM64 WR is like seeing ZFG back with the OoT WR. It's expected, even if it might ultimately take a while to happen.
You don't get that kind of PB WR consistency without having some serious skill, after all. ...especially when your game has real competition, due to being one of the most popular games to speedrun.
Its insane how the limits are continuing to be pushed in this game. I just started playing it recently for there first time and the controls are always giving me trouble, its wild just how perfect players like cheese have become over the years, I have a lot of respect for them
I sucked so much on the Nintendo DS version of this game, I can't imagine how much *more* skill it takes to use the original controller.
Wow can't believe that speedrun's for this game have progressed so far. Your the legend for making this video 💜
Heard Badabum beat it already while cooking dinner and going grocery shopping
Cheese wasn't feeling himself. Someone made the mistake of playing him Y'all must have forgot. Look what happened.
my former neighbour and classmate met Cheese twice at events and finally admitted having a crush on him(after annoying me with stories about him for about a year) - but being shy isnt helping although swore to me next time they meet-its risk time
Consistently putting out some of the highest quality content on TH-cam!!
The deepness of that "Legends" in the intro really hit the spot in my ears
This is so inspiring I love it. Congratulations cheese!
It is a real treat to be here to witness this period in speedrunning. 10 years from now, speedrunning fans will be talking about this, either reminiscing, or lamenting that they weren't here to see it.
The man, the myth, the Chez!
21:56 - you can see when he goes for it, then stops, then goes "fuck it we're doing it" and rips the shirt 🤣
Cheese is the fucking GOAT
Hmmmmmmmm goat cheeeeeese.....
The clip of him deciding to tear off his shirt is one of the best pop-off videos.
You know the interviews of the streamers made me think it would be cool if you had a series where you interviewed different runners popular and not. You could cover really obscure games like that too. I dunno if that's your kind of jam but I would watch the hell out of that.
21:57 looooooooollll gg!
I love seeing people react like that to their achievements.
Congratulations Cheese.
Thanks Karl.
@@ciarangale4738 I can't wait for the day when 120 star runs will be so optimized that people will end the run after a small mistake that costs seconds. Like I said before we are probably years away from that but I know it will happen someday.
