Yo, I have defeated the nerves you spoke of. It involves thinking that you've already died IRL and you're only here on a privilege , it was all over long ago & nobody can see you. It's just you on the planet and nobody cares about your level of achievement, including yourself. This all sounds stupid, though if you can truly give up and hold little to no value to your life, your mind will no longer race. Is this good or bad? Who cares I can make great use of it. Often times if a runner or competitor believes they have thrown the run they tend to piss-bowl the rest of the level with low stress.

@PoopWaterBackSplash Exactly! As much as we'd love to see a unified champion, we'd also love to see the community come together, set a bounty, organize live stream events, etc to prevent a unified champion!

As far as Kanno is concerned, you mentioned he "placed" 5th in 16 star. However that run was world record at the time he got it, and he held the 0, 1, and 16 star WRs simultaneously (both on N64 and on emulator, which is another feat in and of itself). After getting the 16 record, he pushed his 0 star record down twice and got two consecutive WRs in 1 star. He has been grinding upstairs and downstairs individually to get good times, and is gonna start doing 120 runs at the beginning of 2023. So he is going for the long categories now, but he had a later start than Weegee. I'm not trying to take anything away from Weegee at all, I just think Kanno is better than you give him credit for

yeah, weegee is a BEAST, and absolutely deserves a Karl Jobst video, but he's definitely not "on the cusp of doing a 5 catagory sweep" with Suigi being the absolute 16 star gigachad that he is and still to push his record lower
Really good video, as a sm64 speedrun viewer/amateur speedrunner, you did a really good job at highlighting what it means to be a top runner in both categories. This video gives a lot of deserved credit to weegee and really makes him stand out amongst other runners.
SIglemic wasn't just THE pioneer for M64 in the west, he also was for streaming in general, and proving that people will happily watch hours of hours of just attempts rather than just caring about the end result. People used to think no one wanted to sit around to see the grind for months without any new records.
One thing about this video is that I think it undersells just how hard it is to take Suigi's WR in 16 Star. And with his recent WR.... it may have become impossible for anyone other than him to get 5/5. Weegee has been in the GOAT discussion even before his 120 Star WR because it was clear that his PB was massively below his skill level and purely gameplay-wise he was better than basically any other player.... except for Suigi. We don't really know Suigi's potential in long categories (although he got Top 5 in 70 Star in about a month of runs).... but with his new 14:3x and moving into 120 Star, I think it'll be time to get him in the discussion very soon.
Karl, I’m not much of a gamer, let alone a speed runner but there’s something compelling about these videos you create, I think it’s the roasts you do on Billy Mitchell and the other litigious “record holder” you talk about.
@@chiarosuburekeni9325 Damn, imagine putting people down for being passionate about something and being emotionally happy for someone else for an accomplishment. 11:30 - skip moment for if you got the message that getting records in long and short categories is hard, and want to move on rather than hear it repeated. ;) (thanks for the video, loved it as always)
You're sort of underrating how incredible Suigi's record is in 16 star and what his potential is. Suigi's 16 star record is a full 9 seconds ahead of 2nd place. He's closing in on being the first to break the 3x barrier while nobody else has gotten 4x. Then Suigi is also top 5 in 70 star. Suigi's potential is so high, and his 16 star record is so dominant, I'd put the odds better for Suigi to get 5/5 before anyone else, even though he hasn't touched 120 star yet.
100% agree. To be clear, nobody is capable of getting a low 4x and let alone a 3x but suigi. Its impossible for Weegee to get a 5/5 because of 16 star. By the time he would be able to get a 3x run he would lose his other records, especially his 70 star record which suigi was about to beat after a few finished runs. He got a 47:13 in 70 star in like a week or so and he didnt even finish like 10 runs till that point. Id say its way more possible to see suigi competing for a 5/5 in like 1-2 years from now.
@@i.q.668 weegee is absolutely capable of 16 star record, up until recently he even had some best exits in it, and he's hardly played 16 star this year. That being said it's the hardest of the 3 for him to get, but he can still do it. Their potential is similar and they could both do it, but it's definitely more likely for weegee right now and for the foreseeable future
This reminds me of Eric Heiden who won all five speed skating gold medals at the Winter Olympics in 1980. Usually skaters are only good at long distances (5k, 10k), the middle distance (1500) or short distances (500, 1k). Sometimes 5k specialists are also good at 1500 and 10k. And 1k specialists may also be good at 500 and 1500. Heiden is the only one who has ever been on top in all five categories. Like WeeGee, he started with the second and third longest categories and branched out.

One person getting wr in one category in sm64 speedrunning is already insane enough of an achievement, let alone one person getting five! If this happens this will definitely be the best moment in speedrunning history
Lolll, the opening XD "if you asked me who the best player was last month, i would have said Cheese. If you asked me today, I would still say cheese. anyway, about this new guy..."
For the hand shaking, if you're still trying to find a way to solve that you could talk to a doctor about trying propranolol for performance anxiety, its often used for situations like presentations and stuff, there's a chance it could help here as well.
He'll probably be in for a quite fight with a lot of the other top players - especially if he can get to four out of five. Anybody who can take one back from him, even if it's just for a day, gets to be part of this story forever.
I downloaded Naraka because of this video! I saw it on the steam home page earlier today and after you mentioned it, I've gotta give it a try through your link!! Keep making awesome stuff my guy
I don't really play video games and have never done a speed run. But these videos always make me interested in the sport and I end up admiring these guys and caring how their record attempts go.
Jeez really kind of you to make this video, Karl. No pressure on the poor kid or anything hahaha. Kidding obviously - much love for the fantastic content. Not that I'd expect anything less from your channel at this point.
Talking about the stress reminded me of a documentary about a bicycle sprinter who became a 24 hour race car driver. Learning to accept mistakes and not fall apart was a massive hurdle for him and involved a lot of therapy.
I can relate to the hand shaking under stress and concentration, it's so frustrating to deal with and it feels like there's nothing you can do to fix it
I feel your pain with stress causing shaky hands. That's always been the case in every facet of my life. During university finals I'm usually shaking like a leaf, which makes it difficult to write at a decent pace.
This guy is the one who would explain everything about the speed run (how it can fail and how likely it is to succeed) and simultaneously entertaining us with his soothing voice and in depth commentary
Always insane seeing the calibur of the runner and exciting to the other see the other runners fight back against a player trying to take a sweep in a highly contested speedrun game. Matthias Rustemeyer's quest for 32/32 was incredibly memorable for that reason and insane to see it potentially happen again in a more contested game.
Cheese's BTR 1'38"54 will always be my favourite record to watch. Closely followed by Simply's 1'38"28 WR with his parents coming in and hugging him. Both get the emotions going and are great examples of why speedrunning is so awesome
I honestly, as being a runner of this game myself, think the greensuigi is the best. He was the first one to get sub 14:50 in 16 star, and now he is about to get a sub 14:40 soon. If you know enough about this game, then you know he is crazy good. When he moves to other categories, he will definitely get sub 1:37 ez in 120. Just a matter of time. He also, along with weegee, has gotten the best dw ever gotten in a run. He is definitely the best, and if he keeps playing and grinding, not only will he get the first sub 14:40, but he will get very good times in 120 star as well.
Weegee has the same potential in 16 as well, he's just focused less on it. I'm not saying one is better than the other, it's very close, but weegee is definitely capable of 16 star record as well
Siglemic is still the goat for me. He brought me to gaming livestreams and his record marathons and his first AGDQ appearance will stand for ever. Probably the newer players are better, but he paved the path for super mario 64. (And he was super funny.)
Not really. The Mario kart 64 record is more akin to single star records or i guess RTA records. They wouldn't team up for that purpose, but cheese always wants the 120 record and suigi grinds 16. Getting these records isn't really about keeping "all" from weegee. It would be about the prestige of having the record yourself.
Imagine in like 1998 some guy coming to your house to play mario and were to put on feats like this. Pretty sure most people felt like a God in the game for just completing the game. lol

I started this video thinking you'd be talking about a SM64 hat trick but I figured that was too unrealistic. You've convinced me it's possible.
11:41 "Obviously someone doesn't just wake up one day and get a Super Mario 64 world record"
You shattered my dreams
How funny is it that two of the greatest Super Mario 64 speedrunners both have names that sound just like "Luigi." Mario's brother.
The greatest speedrunning achievment of all time is a 5.51 on Dragster, held by the absolute legend.
Mario speedrunners on a whole another level.
Video starts at 11:40. My guy has an 11 min run on sentence before then saying the same thing 64 different ways.
Karl, I’m not much of a gamer, let alone a speed runner but there’s something compelling about these videos you create, I think it’s the roasts you do on Billy Mitchell and the other litigious “record holder” you talk about.
Weegee out here collecting world record runs like they are the infinity stones
Lol The ultimate collect-a-thon
Weegee would literally be what Billy Mitchell thinks he was, a gaming rockstar legend.
16:22 I love how cheese is also there for the big moment
Watching weegees run live literally brought a tear to my eye, It was epic. Cheese will always be my favorite runner though.
That’s a bit of an extreme reaction, no? Like I LOVE gaming and have been playing since like ‘87 but to cry over them? Yikes
@@chiarosuburekeni9325 Damn, imagine putting people down for being passionate about something and being emotionally happy for someone else for an accomplishment. You might not think It's big enough to be emotional about, but that's just you. Absolutely nothing wrong with being happy and shedding happy tears for the success of others. Take a look at yourself.
bro you how crying over speedrunning lmao
@@cleava959 Bro you being a douche for no reason shame....
@@Pikachu2Ash bruh it’s honestly ridiculous lol
11:30 - skip moment for if you got the message that getting records in long and short categories is hard, and want to move on rather than hear it repeated. ;)
(thanks for the video, loved it as always)
You're sort of underrating how incredible Suigi's record is in 16 star and what his potential is. Suigi's 16 star record is a full 9 seconds ahead of 2nd place. He's closing in on being the first to break the 3x barrier while nobody else has gotten 4x.
Then Suigi is also top 5 in 70 star.
Suigi's potential is so high, and his 16 star record is so dominant, I'd put the odds better for Suigi to get 5/5 before anyone else, even though he hasn't touched 120 star yet.
I agree.
@@SirTylerGolf damn I was pretty right with what I‘ve said back then
This reminds me of Eric Heiden who won all five speed skating gold medals at the Winter Olympics in 1980.
You know a run has potential when Weegee misses a throw
Someone please HELP me out. I’m actually doing a masters degree and I’m trying to do my THESIS on stress. I would like to see if there is a correlation between long term vs short term stress management between EASTERN vs WESTERN speed runners.
Does anyone know a website with aggregate scores of speed runs of different games with nationality of of player??
Much thanks 🙏🏻
lmao @ 0:00 to @2:10 you made sure we have as much suspense as possible with this intro.
Suigi just destroyed 1 star 2 days ago! What a monster
and now a 0 star wr aswell 3/3 short categories :)
I do not know about how much he is naturally gifted. If he has grinded out the game for the last 5 years it seems like hardwork more to me
It's both
One person getting wr in one category in sm64 speedrunning is already insane enough of an achievement, let alone one person getting five!
If this happens this will definitely be the best moment in speedrunning history
'Cement your legacy with this one simple trick'
I'm so glad we have Karl to point out the one bright spot in this world we live in. Kings among men. 👑
Suigi is gonna be the one to get all 5 records
Incredible video as always, Karl. Thank you for amazing content!
A full SM64 WR sweep would make for an awesome Summoning Salt vid ngl.
Dowsky and Weegee are at the top. Solid movement and mechanics.
The Minecraft streamer?
Lolll, the opening XD
"if you asked me who the best player was last month, i would have said Cheese. If you asked me today, I would still say cheese. anyway, about this new guy..."
Take it easy,Karl. You definitely don't need a WR to be an absolute legends to us.
Imagine being so good at the game that you can ultimately miss 2 Bowser Throws, things that kills a run, and still come out with a dominating lead.
For the hand shaking, if you're still trying to find a way to solve that you could talk to a doctor about trying propranolol for performance anxiety, its often used for situations like presentations and stuff, there's a chance it could help here as well.
I was just watching Summoning Salt's video on the 16 star record, with Weegee having played a pivotal role in that story. Crazy how good he is.
He'll probably be in for a quite fight with a lot of the other top players - especially if he can get to four out of five. Anybody who can take one back from him, even if it's just for a day, gets to be part of this story forever.
It would most likely be similar to the time a mario cart runner (can't remember his name) tried to get the wr in every track
@@bilfbunter2248 Matthias Rustemeyer
@@bilfbunter2248 kind of but not really because the sm64 Speedrunners aren't toxic to each other like the cart runners are
I downloaded Naraka because of this video! I saw it on the steam home page earlier today and after you mentioned it, I've gotta give it a try through your link!! Keep making awesome stuff my guy
I don't know why it brought me a little joy but knowing he was gonna say Cheese as the top Mario speedrunner made me happy
Cheese is the GOAT
When Karl uploads, a Speedrunner shifts into second gear before the game even starts. This is the real world version of an angel getting its wings
well, we have a winner now
I don't really play video games and have never done a speed run.
Love the videos. Always so informative and entertaining, thank you.
Talking about the stress reminded me of a documentary about a bicycle sprinter who became a 24 hour race car driver. Learning to accept mistakes and not fall apart was a massive hurdle for him and involved a lot of therapy.
I don't really run or pay attention to speedrunning, so thank you for reporting these stories for us, Karl!
I can relate to the hand shaking under stress and concentration, it's so frustrating to deal with and it feels like there's nothing you can do to fix it
A 1:15 improvement is insane, especially with no strategy changes. Major props to Weegee!
That's one of the good things about the longer runs. There is plenty of time to save just by playing better.
He's like Thanos, and every category is an Infinity Stone.
"I am inevitable."
You got yourself a great voice, cadence is top level you definitely put work into it
This video feels like its only there to cheer on weegee to go for the 5
Watching the movement in this game is always so impressive to me. The runners are so precise and I can't even walk straight.
Those GoldenEye sound effects censoring the F-bombs in that clip were top tier strats
I've kept an eye on Weegee for a while now and he's been extremely promising for a while now
Dowsky is the greatest sm64er of all time. He is pure chad mode 24/7 and pops off constantly.
He was at one point but he didn't have the longevity. He isn't as good since coming back from Minecraft
I wonder if this might spawn another friendly competition of Weegee vs the World for holding all the major records like there was for Mario Kart 64?
KJ: "Who is the greatest-"
Me: "You, you are the greatest."
KJ: "-Super Mario 64 Player-"
Me: "Damn it."
This is a 3 minute video stretched to 20
Cry more
Weegee is honestly the best overall Mario 64 speedrunner he just makes every aspect of the game look so easy.
Imagine in like 1998 some guy coming to your house to play mario and were to put on feats like this.
Pretty sure most people felt like a God in the game for just completing the game. lol
im dealing with a bad break up right now and for some strange reason your voice and videos are installing coziness and comfort in me closing towards christmas day
Happy Holidays Karl Jobst, you absolute legend
What's the song at 4:22? It's unlocking a deep memory but not enough to remember where from D:
"I'm not going to ask."
No, you are just going to indirectly pressure him into doing it through a video with hundred of thousands of views, lol.
so basically he's the Messi of Super Mario 64, achieving everything that's possible there
