    About me: I initially had a clothing company that tanked. However, that experience taught how incredibly expensive it is to outsource your content creation. This prompted me to learn everything I could about photo and video. Shooting video and photo was the aspect of the business I enjoyed the most, so I made the tough decision to focus on those disciplines. Just like you, I’m still learning but I still want to share my experience with you because I love watching videos basically anything related to film photography and video. I hope you’ve taken something useful from watching my channel. It’s been proven that subscribers to my channel are 47% happier than non-subscribers. Food for thought.

    Somebody else speaks my language, his name is Zain. I agree with you 1,000% on everything you stated in this video. Damn Straight Talk. Here's my two pennies worth of salt, a new life in photography starts with a creative desire, and moves slowly into your first digital camera. And you should use it until you learn composition, framing, colour balance, metering, aperture, shutter speed.... and so on, and once you get comfortable with your digital camera then you can start thinking about film photography, I said thinking about film photography ..... not shooting film. Dive deeply into why you want to do it, and ask yourself - will this creative desire I have - pass, or is this merely an interest or hobby I have now found that appeals to my creative nature, or is this something I want to pursue as a viable alternative to what I do now. So this was an absolutely brilliant video Zain, it takes some serious insight to speak frankly just as you just have. Cheers mate, well done.

    Too late now? I’ve been shooting film for three years now, and I’ve probably spent a thousand dollars on this hobby and I love it and now I’m shooting Ekatchrome all the time on my Canon F-1 and it’s amazing, and I’m developing and scanning myself so it’s significantly more inexpensive and I love the entire process, literally

      Yes, that's amazing. I guess I'm speaking based on my own personal experience. That's awesome that you love the process and are shooting film regardless. You've already won since you've committed to getting better.

      @@ZainRiza and at the end of the day to me the ends justifies the means, because honestly the way I’d like to shoot film is like I was in the 60’s and 70’s shooting it as if it’s the only way to take photographs to take my time on more serious work but you also gotta live a little and have fun with it too like family gatherings or vacations and so on

    I think the limiting side of film is a great way to improve quickly, I don’t think it should be your sole means of shooting however. I absolutely prefer the slow methodical photography of analog but without a doubt the ease of digital should not be ignored. As a learning tool the instant feedback is great initially, but the slowed down methods of shooting film and in particular medium format force you to think more and definitely allow you to improve quickly provided you put in the effort and are mindful of your shooting. But only if you are putting in the effort, which arguably you could still do with digital albeit you might not feel the same pressure.
    Edit: also I realise this comment might seem like I’m disagreeing with you but actually I really do agree with you in entirety, my points relate to once you’ve got some experience, which as you say is necessary.

    You made some great points man. But I will say the fastest way to learn anything is trial by fire. Losing money by not properly exposing/framing/etc is a great teacher to a new student of film photography

    • @ZainRiza
      @ZainRiza  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree trial-by-fire is the most effective way. That's what I meant by shooting freely and carelessly. I'd argue that digital is better at teaching since you can see immediately the mistakes you've made. You don't have to pay or wait to see those mistakes. Thanks for taking the discussion further. Appreciate it.

    • @digitalspecter
      @digitalspecter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, for a mindset like mine those costs just build an ever increasing mental block to go out and shoot.. I am already too much of a perfectionist, mistakes are already painful I don't need them costing money too..

    • @ZainRiza
      @ZainRiza  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@digitalspecter Exactly my point. Film is also unique in that the image could be ruined in the development and scanning process that have nothing to do with your ability as a photographer. Furthermore, it's very difficult for a beginner to figure where in the process the mistake was made, i.e. your competence as a film developer has nothing to do with your competence as a photographer.

    This is an incredibly important video which I hope a lot of beginners and experienced photographers watch. I completely agree about starting with digital first before moving onto film..even if it is just to learn the basics of exposure. I love shooting film. Its great that you've made a video to look at the flip side of this. These kinds of videos help start a proper conversation about the topic and allow people to look at this subject from all sides. Great work! Great Photos!

    • @ZainRiza
      @ZainRiza  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah man. I think shooting film gets over-romanticised. I'm just trying to stop beginners from making the same mistakes like me. If I had seen this video when I first started out, I would've saved myself a lot of money and time. I love film way more than digital without a doubt, but my main priority is getting better photography: that's core message of this video.

    Im new to camera photography in general. Ive only ever used my phone. I recently bought a dslr (used and a little older) and I love it. I also happened to come across a cannon a-1 and an ae-1 program for $80 for the pair and a nice Pentax spotmatic for $5 lol so I started shooting film as well. I know the majority of the film shots are going to be bad but it feels good shooting film.

    Some interesting points mate! Loved the pacing of this video too. I shot digital for years before moving to film. So I'd have to agree! I think I learnt a lot quicker that way. But I think film has definitely helped me hone those skills in. One thing to note, is film really that more expensive if you consider the pace at which + how often digital shooters upgrade their cameras/lenses? Also, film cameras generally hold their value for resale while digital ones don't. Great video! Got me thinking haha

    • @ZainRiza
      @ZainRiza  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. I have kinda simplified this problem and not taken into account how often people upgrade their kit. However, this video is specifically about beginners and where they should start their journey and which route would get them shooting consistently. Beginners don't really upgrade their kit. You kinda stop becoming a beginner once you've upgraded your kit once or twice, right? Haha. I guess shooting digital can help you decide what kinda photographer you want to be (landscape, street, portrait) and then film can help you perfect your voice (your specific niche/USP) as it were. I really appreciate you taking the discussion further.

    I completely agree. I started photography when I was16 years old with my father’s old Topcon RE Super. I even studied back in the films days and developed and printed my own photos. But I learned more in 1 month with with my first DSLR than I had in years of film photography and was able to dramatically improve my photos ... now 25 years after I last developed my own film I’m buying a fully manual film camera again so I can enjoy the process more with the knowledge I’ve gained through digital photography.

Up until now, there is almost 75k picture in my gallery since I keep practicing the photography rules and trying new creative way of shooting. Just recently I join film community with Olympus OM-10 and Canon A-1. The experience was amazing and I did enjoy the process of developing film. It’s like magic happened in front of your eyes Hahaha. I did agree you better off with digital first since you will learn a lot of rules and you will get instant outcome with digital compared to film (the most important things, will not break your bank).Thanks for inspiring me to keep going! I totally agree with you! I've been using a dslr for almost 7 years now and I've learned so much from that so moving into film photography is a nice way to keep my hobby alive. I've seen so many people jumping on the film photography bandwagon and not understanding basic photography concepts. I've met people who doesn't understand the meaning of iso and they just randomly purchase iso 200 films and use them to shoot in low light conditions and then blame it on their camera for the underexposed and shaky images.

    Great advice! Your advice sounds just like my father’s. I wasn’t allowed to touch his Canon A1 until now…10 years later. Before that I had to prove to him that I was able to take great pictures with a Canon 60d and a kit lens. And the pictures should look good without editing them. When he thought I had become better, I was upgraded to 35mm f/1.4 and a 85mm f/1.4 prime lens that suited to my type of style. What a night and day it was to go from a kit lens to those prime lenses! And finely now he has handed me down one of his Canon A1❤

    Im late to the topic, but I kind of agree with you, because that's how i started off. Took a photography class at my university and u had to buy a digital camera for it. I was an amateur that didn't know shit about photography and cameras. Even through the final lessons in class, I still struggled to understand how cameras work. Shortly after that, I had to take another photography class, but this time, using 35mm slr cameras. I kind of knew how to use them, due to taking the previous class, but still struggled. It was about halfway through that class that I actually started to grasp how cameras worked. I started to have fun and collect various cameras and now i prefer shooting film cameras, rather than digital. Im by no means a professional, but I consider it a hobby that I want to study and excel in.

    He honestly does have a point. But the thing about starting primarily with film and moving to shooting both film and digital is that shooting film helps you be selective and more “thoughtful” of course . The thing about only shooting film is the problem because you have no where to transfer that talent to. Film does give you a canvas but you have to paint and paint and paint for you to become an artist.

    • @ZainRiza
      @ZainRiza  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, exactly and not everyone can afford to constantly keep painting enough to become an artist. Likewise, a lot of beginners might give up painting after only a few attempts and let their brushes and canvas gather dust.

    I agree with you. Everything you said is right. I hope everyone takes it as an eye-opener versus you bashing film photography. Look at your options for a digital camera first before jumping straight into the film. So you can get your feet wet and learn everything you need to know about photography first. I just recently started to get into photography and I love the process of the film. At same film is super expensive. Thank you for doing this video though.

    • @ZainRiza
      @ZainRiza  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Gary! One of my aims is to help detach people from the emotions of shooting film and try keep one's primary aim with photography to be mastering their craft and shooting more photos. In the beginning I was tempted into film and ended up collecting cameras and racking up huge costs in servicing and maintenance. I just wish someone had told me in the beginning that film isn't everything and that getting good photos is what it's all about. I've learnt that true fulfilment comes from making progress in your images not collecting cameras and film. I love film and will shoot it for as long as we have it.

    Buy a $35 C41 kit and you can develop up to 20 rolls on your own. Even with buying an Epson V600 scanner you will be saving money after your first ten rolls compared to sending it off.

    • @ZainRiza
      @ZainRiza  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I know I didn't include the cost-savings from home development and scanning haha. But in any case I think that would still support my argument. I should've added that the cost per photo stays the same with film even if you develop/ scan at home, whilst with digital cost-per-photo goes down with every photo, hence why you'd be more likely to commit to getting better at photography.

    Impeccable calculations my man. But seriously justified, because times have changed and people really need to accept the reality that unless you have a stable income to afford such a pasttime, it's simply not feasible. I would argue that these days 10,000 photos should be more like 100,000 photos because these digital cameras be having some wild continuous burst rates ( i definitely don't use that feature pssh what >_>) oh yeh and film needs to be digitized these days anyways so what the hell.

      YES! That's the point I'm making. I'm assuming that people watching are trying to become as good as they possibly can at photography, not someone who shoots 1 roll a year for a bit of fun so they can share a couple of photos with their friends on IG. As a beginner, the financial and emotional burden of film will most likely put up too many hurdles between them and the 10k photo threshold, where the beginner stops being a beginner and starts taking great photos. That's why I shot with digital in the beginning to get me off the ground, and why I still shoot digital alongside film.

    • @AndyPerezCaba
      @AndyPerezCaba 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZainRiza I shot film when I started because the school provided it, but switched to digital as well because it’s so much easier than film when you’re learning. Nothing hurts more than developing a roll, only to find out all your shots are over or under exposed! All that money down the drain 😭 So learning about exposure on digital, it’s way better because you see your results in real time and can tweak your settings from there until it’s like second nature. I recently got the x100v and I wish I would have got it sooner. The x100 line is great if you want that vintage and film feel with the simulations, but don’t want to spend a ton of money on film to learn how to shoot good pictures. It’s my go to camera now when I don’t want to shoot film!

    You made some good points, but it’s kinda disappointing to hear. I’ve been to a graphic design school (which I finished) and had photography class for about three years. Before I knew nothing about taking photos, now I know more, but the class sucked so I still don’t know much about the technical stuff, which is a bummer cause it’s really important. I’m a really intuitive person and I always relied on that when taking digital pictures. That’s not possible with film, cause you won’t see the results until they’ve been developed.
    Through the years I took a lot of pictures and some I really love, but there is something about digital photos that doesn’t appear to me and because of that, taking photos isn’t as enjoyable to me no more. No matter how good the photo is, it’s doesn’t give the look only film can achieve. So I’m quite torn, cause I just can’t get to love digital but I also don’t have money to waste on rubbish looking film. I don’t even wanna pursue a career as a photographer, I just wanna document moments in my life as best as possible.
    How long did it take you to become skilled enough to photographing reliable in film? And what do you think about digital camera lenses that are imitating the film “aesthetic”?

      I have no issue with using filters to create certain looks. It makes photography fun. I think I came up with a routine that I really enjoyed that helped me be consistent.

    First of all, if you call it a hobby, you're probably going to be the kind of person who gives up. If this isn't your burning passion or your life's delight, just use your phone. Film forces you to INVEST in your photography. No pain, no gain. You learn from your mistakes, and you won't unless you PAY for your mistakes. If the cost is too much for you, it's not important enough to you to become excellent. Don't be a poser. Follow your passion at whatever cost. And forget the 10,000 exposure thing. That's Bresson being an idiot. Just because his first images were bad doesn't mean yours will be. That said, you will get better if you PAY ATTENTION to what you are doing and can ascertain what your mistakes are teaching you.
    So, as a photographer who started in 1971 shooting slide film(NO room for error)I can tell you my absolute LOVE for shooting far outweighed the countless errors. Love hurts. PAY YOUR DUES.

    I normally don‘t click on videos with titles like this, I don‘t want some random guy on TH-cam to tell me why I need to do this, stop that, buy one thing or another, all that while pretending to be some kind of god that knows everything and only THE BEST for YOU (without even knowing you. But this video was actually great. Good, strong points you gave there to support your message and I agree, I totally agree with you. I was gifted my first (cheap) digital camera as a child, four years ago I bought my first DSLR. Last year I switched to mirrorless, it seemed like the right thing to to for me and I can stand 100 percent behind that decision. Was my purchase REALLY necessary? Maybe not entirely, something like 75 %. It‘s smaller, lighter, faster, has focus peaking, shows me pictures immediately, has a tilting screen, that‘s about it. But shooting with it is a true joy to me. I digress. Now I‘m really interested in film photography and its funny to see how I use exactly the same arguments you listed in the video, about intentionalism and things like that. I‘m not what I would call a great photographer. I never shot as much as I wanted to afterwards. I neglected this interest more than I would like to admit. But maybe I could consider myself somewhat decent, sometimes good. Now, my grandfathers old cameras finally started to get me off the sofa and I want to use that momentum to shoot more, both digital and film. I want to put more time and effort into the hobby, not shooting only on vacation and such things. Your video made me realize that I need to shoot digital way more to learn and gather experience (while shooting film for fun and less often, just occasionally) and at some point I may be able to shift more towards film. Slowly and steadily, all with patience. Thanks for being an honest voice out there, that‘s not trying to sell something to people who are new at this topic.

    the only valid point in this video is the thing about money. The argument that someone cannot learn photography by shooting film it's completely off. Also the good and bad photography in the way you talk about it, like it's something totally objective, it's something that does not apply to everyone. If someone wants to learn how to write, firstly he should learn to use a pencil and not a keyboard. The fact that the analogue way in photograpy nowdays is much more expensive and slower as procedure than the digital, does not in any sence mean that someone will learn for sure or quicker with a digital camera. Someone that wants just to impress people, will simply fail both in digital and in film. It's not the medium you choose that will make you learn, but the commitment you put on your need to learn. If you are serious about learning photography and not just another fraud who wants to make youtube videos and receive instagram likes, you will find your way either from film or digital.

    Analog photography was expensive, is expensive and always will be. Digital photography is cheaper to start with, but this is largely due to the fact that much less is printed these days.
    If you add up image processing programs, hard drives for archiving, a good computer every 4 years, a smartphone to share on social media, the associated cellphone contract and so on...
    digital photography probably costs no more or less than analog.
    In the end, the money is gone anyway and what remains is the memory of a hobby that I hope you enjoyed.

    The purpose of starting off on film is to work and learn slower. Starting off on digital makes it more likely that you will spray and pray instead of learning composition. Working on film can also make your photography more deliberate by having more preplanning of your assignments before you go out shooting. I say this as someone that started off on a dslr and took around 50,000 mediocre to awful photos in my first 6 months of photography. The digital camera gives a beginner the illusion that you're going to be gifted lots of easy and awesome shots.
    If you aren't making the effort to actively improve your composition and get feedback and tips from professional photographers, you can shoot 100k shots and still be a mediocre photographer. Henri's 10k quote is also probably in reference to improvement as a photographer over years of taking photos.

    • @ZainRiza
      @ZainRiza  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's some reasonable points here, but those first 6 months is still extremely early days into one's journey, so it's not long enough to draw any conclusions. I would argue that the illusion of getting great images is more applicable to film to be honest, but that's just me. The conscious effort to get better goes without saying, regardless of digital and film. I also forgot to mention that there are more stages in the film process where an image gets ruined, as opposed to digital: light leaks in the camera, screwing up the development and scanning process, contaminated chemicals, film tearing in the camera, jammed rolls of film, etc. None of these mistakes have anything to with one's ability to compose and read light and it's difficult to diagnose the root cause of these mistakes as a beginner. Yes, I know, SD cards and hard drives can corrupt as well, but this is far, far less likely. I'm not saying you can't learn photography with film; just saying it's not what I'd recommend.
      Edit: Also, your initial 50k shots on digital, I'd argue, undoubtedly accelerated your growth and progression.

    if you suck on film you also suck on digital cameras and vice versa. it's not about film or digital it's about being aware of what you are photographing. maybe photography isn't for you then?

      I don't think I agree with that logic. You're assuming people can't improve, which obviously isn't true.

    I see what you did there. You just want to keep film cameras cheap until you get your gear aquisition syndrome under control! To anyone reading this he's lying. Film photography is addictive and fun! And all those crappy shots give you the perfect medium to practice home developing. I think Kodak puts cocaine in D76, once you smell it, you want more!!! 😂

    Great brilliant, what nonsense! So what about people like me who were born in the 60s and come the 80s we only had film cameras. We had to learn about film speed, shutter speed and aperture. I left photography in the early 2000s and came back to it last year, I bought a Canon mirrorless camera, and soon realised I could teach a chimpanzee to take great pictures with it! Look through he view finder, if you dont like what you see, change the 3000 setting options you have, until the picture in the view finder is "exactly " what you want, at between 7 and 23 frames per second and 500 mega pixels I'm pretty sure at least one picture will be good, but if not don't panic, go home and switch on Light Room or photoshop and change everything that your £10,000 camera didn't do, and change the picture into what you wanted in the first place! You will be surprised to learn after 6 months I sold the talentless idiot proof camera, and bought an Olympus analogue camera, and now I'm back to judgement, skill and anticipation, I feel like a photographer again, and not a fraud pretending to be one! But saying all that, yes I agree with you that because of "today's" prices for film and developing are absolutely ridiculous it probably is best to "learn" on digital make all you mistakes there, and then if the true experience of old school film attracts you go for it. I suppose I'm remembering a time when film was the only choice and it was soooooooo cheap to buy and develop, even for a skint teenager! Please excuse me for being old!

    I think this is horrible advice. I don't even feel the need to expound upon how click baity and wrong this whole thing is. Don't assume the position of what anyone is starting in photog for, and just stick to your lane of actual photog education and review. It's not just you, tons of TH-camrs try this angel and it's not cute on anyone, stop. That being said I'm a fan, but you're wrong, not to mention that this kind of messaging is condescending af. The monetary concerns of film are valid, but mostly everyone shooting film in 2021 has probably considered that and done the research. If dollars and cents is your end goal in photog, that's great, but don't project that onto others, not cool.

      Meh it's a hot take, on a hot take. What do you want from me? I just don't see the merit in the discussion. Creative types are some head strong creatures, so at the end of the day they'll decide what format is best for them. There's just as many things that can go wrong with the expensive modern gear like sd cards, adapters breaking, or your warranty expiring and then experiencing a manufacturer defect on your expensive modern camera, just to name a few. So there's trade offs either way. And you can screw up spending money on film/the cost of development and still have fun and grow. Without this pseudo basket case mentality, where you're afraid to hit the shutter button because every exposure costs you money. So like, no disrespect, I'm just not buying.

      @@mattiejane9628 Those examples of digital tragedies are pretty extreme and rare compared to the reality that not everyone is making every exposure of a roll count towards the initial investment. I shoot film and digital almost 50/50 these days. Maybe film even more, but the reality is the time I spent getting "good" at photography on any of the number of digital cameras I've had were a better initial investment.
      X100F I spent $1000 on and had for 3 years. Got hundreds if not thousands of keepers. Used the same memory card the whole time. Literally shot it in a Japanese Typhoon despite it not being weather sealed. Never had a single issue with it. etc.
      Fast forward I now have a Leica M2 I also paid $1000 for. Bought and shot so many rolls already. Good times. I know theirs cheaper cameras I can make examples of like my AE1, but look at me now.: Proper scanner.. $.. software..$...development costs..$..time spent scanning..$
      Good time? Great photos? DEFINITELY! But dear god I don't want to do the math on how much it's cost me.
      If I had got the AE1 or M2 first just kill me now cause I do at least 1 street session a week. Sometimes 2. DOA bro..
