it's interesting the conversation you had about genre. personally, as someone that's read a lot of BL, i just consider it a label for m/m romances with a certain art style. Yaoi and shonnen ai both fall under the BL umbrella, the difference is that shonnen ai focuses more on the romantic aspect and yaoi is bascially porn without plot (or with plot that services the porn). Bara also exists, it's commonly described as m/m manga made by and for gay men, but as a gay man i was never able to into it. think bl = pretty boys, and bara = hairy, very masculine men. i feel like whenever there's a really good story that comes out of the BL genre, people are quick to jump and say "it's more than BL". Romance has a similar problem tbh, when I tried recommending people good romance novels, i have to insist that it's not what they think it'll be. But i think there's a case to be made that maybe these shows are just pushing BL into a new, more interesting direction. But also, i can understand the resistance when it comes to this, as segregating romance based on wlw, mlm and straight is a little weird. Also, yeah there's a lot of trash in this genre but here are two recommendations :) Our Dreams at Dusk is more a coming of age story than a romance but it lumped into the genre because of the mlm relationship in it, and our dinning table, it's very quaint and sweet, sort of a meet cute with two adults that centers around making food.

Glasses-guy (Take-chan) does not want to f*ck Haruki as far as canon shows us (I've read all the manga available). Glasses-guy dates someone else eventually. Sometimes, guys are just good friends - even in BL :) But I'll admit to writing a fanfic where Take-chan and Haruki do the deed, ha. Uh, yeah, a lot of people missed the fact that Yuuki hung himself. They did show it in the first episode - you see the back of his head swinging just a bit as Mafuyu stares up at him. And you get another, slightly better, glimpse of it in a later episode as well (and the same in the manga - it is there). He did get drunk first, so if you missed the visual, it is easy to assume he somehow drank himself to death.
This is a BL, I think the reason you guys struggle with calling it that is perhaps you associate BL with raunchy/NFSW stories? I’m only assuming. There is a lot of wholesome/romantic BL out there that doesn’t seek to fetishize gay men, but rather normalize gay relationships.
Hey if you guys want to read another musical manga I reccomend Shiori Experience it's about a teacher haunted by Jimi Hendrix as she wants to make a music club. THAT BEING SAID if you could be haunted by someone famous and dead who would it be and what would the be training you in
Volume one is kinda a band dynamic. Mehgan: the funny one, the heart and soul of the band Cody: the bad boy, smart and level headed but always speaks his mind Josh: Volume one-Chan the mysterious one. And with that singing voice, definitely main character material. But in all honesty I’d love for y’all to do a volume redone or volume done on Vinland saga. I remember josh saying something about his journey with sobriety in a previous episode, and I started reading Vinland saga after y’all’s episode. I feel like thorfinn’s journey in the manga is really a story of struggling with sobriety and uses war and killing as a metaphor for substances. Maybe just be me looking too far into it, but I’d love to hear Josh’s take on it!
When you're talking you look like Chris Evans in Fantastic 4 but when you're not you look like Sid from toy story. Also you guys should check out "The Climber"

Manga suggestion - I sold my life for ten thousand yen per year. Only 3 volumes. 18 chapters. Based on how much you guys liked fire punch. Personally I didn’t like fire punch as much but I enjoyed the review and perspective. Also got a lot of respect for Cody for sharing his story, therefore I would highly recommend this. This manga really hits you in the feels. I believe you guys would have a blast talking about this In the podcast.

Literally just discovered this channel, listened to 4 episodes already xdd. I liked Given, but after some point it got boring, I really liked the potential of a music manga/anime so I started searching and I found an anime called Beck, its about a boy who discovers a dream in becoming a musician in a band, and the anime is great with awesome ost, but where it truly shines is its story after the anime in its manga. I suggest you atleast give it a try, its my favorite story ever and I found it appropriate to mention it because its also about music (not BL tho).
