mafuyu being able to reach ugetsu with his song absolutely touched me in a way i wasnt expecting. the way he was able to empathize with ugetsu and his emotional connection to akihiko, and how he understood how difficult it was for him to let go despite how much their relationship was holding both of them back,,, mwah chefs kiss. im very glad you enjoyed the movie :) your commentary was amazing as always !!!

Haruki absolutely broke my heart when he desperately told akihiko to just tell him what’s wrong and that he would do anything for him, but then akihiko pushed him away and wouldn’t let him in saying that he wouldn’t be able to do anything 💔💔💔
Then the fact that akihiko chenged himself and put effort into being a better person deserving of haruki’s love 😩😩
    I was in tears honestly

  • @KHMissy

I was genuinely impressed that Given handled Akihiko's story the way it did. It didn't go with a BL token cliche "he's a playboy and casual sex partners with someone [Ugetsu] but falls in love with the guy [Haruki]". Instead, it portrayed a genuine relationship that had turned toxic and was inevitably falling apart. It chose to portray love and romance in a mature way. It even chose to show us the complex emotion of falling out of love with someone and coming to the admition that the relationship is not working anymore.
I also like how their apartments were representative of the state of their relationships. Akihiko and Ugetsu lived in a basement apartment. It's dark, the colors are muted and monochromatic making it feel very cold. There's no semblance of warmth in the apartment at all. In contrast, Haruki lives in an apartmet that has a view where they can watch the fireworks or watch the sun rise and set. His apartment has some color and warm tones, and it feels very home-y. The contrast in these apartments mirror how Akihiko feels. With Ugetsu, he feels cold and miserable. With Akihiko, he feels like a person again.
Not really a spoiler, but in the manga, both Akihiko and Ugetsu move out of that basement apartment. While they live their lives separately, they both have moved into apartments where they can clearly see the sky and let the sun's warm rays into their rooms. This is a visual metaphor to let us know that they are both happy and healthy where they individually are now. Just like what Mafuyu said, "Everything will be okay."

What you said about toxic relationships- that was the part of the movie that I started crying. I had a friend with borderline personality disorder, and we recently broke things off. Obviously the situation wasn't exactly the same, but we just kept coming back to each other even though she said the most horrible things to me. She tried to bait me back into talking to her again, I put my foot down, and she harassed me for months. Contacted my family members, my friends, my social media mutuals, and spammed them with dozens of messages. I had to private most of my online accounts and start over. At the same time, I understand why she was so upset. I miss the good things, but I'm so happy I don't have to deal with her abusive behavior anymore.

I completely agree with your point on Ugetsu I've been reading Given for a long time now and ever since the first glance at Ugetsu's character I had a very strong love-hate relationship with him warning huge paragraph incoming, I get how he is scared of being alone so he keeps Kaji close even tho he let him on he never intended on pursuing a relationship with him in the future but it is so selfish and even he knew that Kaji leaving was something that might happen and you can tell he had strong feelings for him but it was unfair for Kaji who's the one who was getting hurt by that relationship because he had hope that it would change. Kaji is comfort him being there is all he knows and has known for a long time now but hurting him in the process is cruel 😔 I still cried at the last goodbye btw I wish I could be strong enough to face my toxic ex like that haha but I'm too much of a coward for now I want to better myself before facing him then I'll let my anger go 😊

Mafuyu is a God-Muse on high and he's the most emotionally intelligent person out of anyone in this series, 2nd's probably Shizusumi. Yes, Mafuyu is like Ugetsu 3rd friend and it's adorkable as all heck. And since I'm still caught up with the manga (slow to update but she's still going) I can tell you now; this arc is extremely important to Uenoyama and Mafuyu's romantic relationship too. Lessons are learned- how rare is that in any romantic story nowadays?!

i really loved given and i loved reading the manga. the scene with aki and haruki tho in the manga, i somehow didn’t even realize aki had actually gone through with something until i watched the movie. on that i’d like to add that it wasn’t actually “sex” (ig it depends on your definition) but the movie doesn’t show or specify anything. and with that part, i’m kind of upset with the wording they used. i wouldn’t exactly call haruki saying “i basically gave consent” as giving consent. aki was over powering him in this situation even after haruki telling him to stop repeated and when he realized aki was upset and wasn’t stopping he said he would do anything. to me it feels more like pressure than real consent, and i’ve been in situations like that so i feel kind of weird about it and i’m not really sure what to think about it. i wish they focused on that more though, like aki having a more heartfelt apology about it because even though i know he felt bad and knew he did something wrong, his apology didn’t seem to be sorry enough imo. i dunno. and i also wished to see haruki more affected by it maybe? i know he was still upset about it but i didn’t really feel it. i just it a bit odd that this show can focus and express really really well the good and bad about their relationships, but didn’t seem to dwell on this seemingly really big thing that happened.
i’d also like to add, that i know that since it’s a movie that some things would have to be cut, but it was pretty much the same as the manga in what was focused on which is why i’m saying what i wished for more of. other than this scene though, the movie was really lovely and i suppose i should go by if haruki can forgive him then maybe i should too?

Lots of people don't understand a lot of things from this arc, and tbh,I think it's mostly because a) they're teens or b) have never been in a toxic relationship. This arc hit me right on the feels when I read it in the manga, it was powerful and just so full of emotions and growth, seriously amazing. The movie cuts some things from the manga, but it still conveys all the most important things from this part of the story, and I agree, that part when they say goodbye, it's so strong and full of emotions it's insane. I could feel the pain from both Akihiko and Ugetsu.

Hiruki deserves better! Akihiko... Has hurt Hiruki emotionally and physically. I guess a lot of people are better than me because I believe that was unforgivable. Shojo and BL have this toxic trope that for some reason I can't get over and I'm sorry if that makes me a bad person. I have been told multiple times that my inability to forgive is a really bad trait,

    • @AquaFoxes
      @AquaFoxes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I totally agree that Haruki deserved better! When someone hurts you, you have no obligation to forgive them. I think the show acknowledges this to some extent by having Akihiko work to "become a man worthy of Haruki's love", but I would have much preferred that the show cement this further by having Haruki set boundaries and friendzone Akihiko at the very least. (Really, I'd prefer this whole thing not happen in the first place, or that Haruki cut ties with Akihiko) This would let people know that it's ok to not forgive completely, since lots of media seems to romanticize forgiveness quite a lot.
I don't think that one's ability to forgive necessarily reflects how good or bad of a person they are. In the end, forgiveness isn't about strict moral coding, where certain actions must always be forgiven and certain actions must always not. Forgiveness is a lot more personal, because it involves choosing who is and isn't in your life, and what boundaries can't be crossed.
Sometimes forgiveness is good, because you want that person to be in your life, they have learned their mistake and won't do it again, and/or it will ultimately make you happier to let go of the grudge. In these cases, forgiveness will allow you to live a healthier life.
However, sometimes a lack of forgiveness is necessary, perhaps for a variety of reasons. Maybe you know that the person in question has not changed, and if you forgive them, you'll get hurt again. Maybe you've been hurt so badly that the damage that's been done to the relationship is irreparable. Maybe you no longer feel comfortable around them, so opening up to them via forgiveness wouldn't end well. In these cases, a lack of forgiveness allows you to live a healthier life.
Ultimately, I don't think it makes you a bad person when you find yourself unable to forgive. While it is true that forgiving too much can allow others to take advantage of you, and forgiving too little can distance you from the people who matter most and make you feel lonely/unhappy, 1. It's ok to not be a perfect human being bc none of us are, and 2. like I said, forgiveness mostly has to do with deciding what role other people have in your life, and that sort of decision is never morally wrong or right - who you allow into your life is entirely your choice, and doesn't make you a good or bad person because you're just trying your best to be happy. It might affect how functional you are, but that's another thing entirely, and no one is completely functional either lol. We all kinda just have to keep learning.
In terms of BL tropes and such, I think it's kinda similar in that you don't have an obligation to forgive or "get over" toxic tropes. Ultimately, you could argue that "getting over" toxic tropes is better bc then you get to enjoy more media, and you could argue that not doing so is better because it's more righteous, and allows you to stand up for your beliefs in real time instead of succumbing to the masses. I think we all need to be nicer to ourselves and recognize that experience is very subjective.
You don't owe a show enjoyment- it just happens or it doesn't. If a problematic trope ruins a show for you, that is completely and utterly valid. If you find yourself able to enjoy a show despite its problematic nature, that is valid as heck. You can't really control how much you enjoy a show, so being unable to ignore problematic aspects in no way makes you a bad or worse person, so there's no need for you to apologize. I think the world would be a very un-fun place if we forced ourselves to enjoy tropes that made us uncomfortable.
Besides, not being able to get over toxic tropes makes sense- not that being able to enjoy a show despite toxic elements is bad. Toxic stuff can be really uncomfortable to watch, and ruin enjoyment. It reminds you of the bad in the world, and that's never fun. It might even remind you of painful moments in your life - a sexist show might remind a person of sexism in their own life and make them feel like it'll never go away. If a show supports a toxic relationship, it might make someone who barely escaped such a relationship feel invalidated.
Sorry that this is way too long. I guess I just wanted to agree with you and say that you're not a bad person for having valid experiences.

Tbh as a manga reader, I was disappointed. The execution of scenes could've been more emotional. The tension delivered was just not that good as it did in the anime. It was rushed and was somehow out of context. They skipped a lot.

So you'll hate this first sentence but...
    As a manga reader xD
I loved the movie. Haru and Akis relationship was HANDELED WELL yk. Like you are supposed to do.
    BUT! BUUUUUT
They totally skipped of Mafuyu and Uesama xD
Yorugaakeru is a song about moving on. Which is what Mafuyu does throughout the course of Haru and Akis relationship, like during the time they are getting together.
It is small clips and snipits of just Ueonoyama and Mafuyu spending their time together but it really shows Mafuyu actually loving UESAMA and not YUKI.
But I still do love the movie alot xD

But take away from the number 1 given fanboy. Fav moments was the 1 scene we got with Mafuyu and Uneoyama by the river/pond thing and my overall fav moment was the confession at the end and the noise of disbelief/dying that Haruki came out with

I just finished watching it. This popped up on my suggestion so thank you. I didn't know it had dropped. I liked it, but having read the Manga after seeing season 1, there's a lot missing. Still it's good. I give it a B

Having watched it a 2nd time, with my headphones.... Take-chan is just AMAZING. I've thought that since season 1. One of my favorite characters ever. Hats off to his voice actor. Sato's substitue lyrics and Haruki's reaction was LEGENDARY. I laughed so hard I had to rewind and pause for a minute. I'm still laughing. Haruki cut his hair because he gave up on Akihiko. In season 1, he says he was growing it out as a silent prayer for Akihiko. I don't think his personality changed at all. Maybe his confidence, but that's a very different thing. There really is a lot of stuff they left out making this as a movie. This should have been a 2nd season. Then you'd understand why they lost, and why there isn't much of Uenoyama. But.... since this is what they chose to do, okay. I think they did a great job. The song wasn't spectacular. It was great, don't get me wrong. I think it speaks more to the actual song writers to make a song this good, but have it be purposefully understated so it's not as impactful as the song from season 1.

nooo don't be unfair to my baby ugetsu :(((((( he is just a fragile and lost human being... actually his motivations were much clear in the manga. i can't say that his methods are correct but he was just trying to do his best. idk i guess him being a flawed, sometimes selfish but also very delicate artist hit me close to home haha i agree what you said, it is very well written and i really enjoyed the movie. thank you for the video btw

Unpopular opinion…I don’t like Akihiko with Haruki. Call me a dramatic bish, but Ugetsu works so much better with Aki.
