The way you felt about Akihiko in vol 4, is how I felt about Ugetsu. He was so toxic, toying with Aki’s emotions and not even being subtle about how he used him. Of course, Aki knew this, but it was still tragic. Especially when we learn his parents pretty much left him on his own at what, 15-18? If you’re up to date with the manga, the last few chapters had me scared thinking Ugetsu would hit on Mafuyu, since I think he could easily be at his level (will most likely reach it). But, thankfully, much like how Akihiko has grown to be great in his now non toxic relationship, Ugetsu has turned out to be an amazing friend to Mafuyu.
25:20 and on is how I interpreted those panels. At first of course, I was mortified, but when Haruki’s triggering point is Akihiko not opening up to be vulnerable or allow himself to be helped/ listened to even, I realized it goes back to the recurring issue everyone struggles with. That is, lack of communication. Misunderstandings can go so far, lack of openness and communication can lead to terrible outcomes, like that of Yuki. Mafuyu was able to get closure with that song and spoilers with the latest chapter, Ue finishing the song Yuki started, titling it, “to the sea.” Akihiko admitting he was wrong & then later asking for Haru’s consent shows that lack of communication has been overcome. More so, our baby Haru got closure over that frisky scene 🥹
I loved this. Thank you for sharing, because the one thing about this show/manga is that it just makes you feel and not all of what you feel is meant to be good and that is just so magical. I remember starting the show and just being so caught of guard at how deep it went with its portrayal of different kind of relationships and my heart just breaks for Mafuyu who had to deal with and abusive parent and then lose the person who he not only loved, but who saved him from that abuser...T-T. Also the show often portrays Mafuyu as not being good at expressing himself, but why would he be good at it when so much of us live is essentially shaped by sadness and still he is willing to try again with Uenoyama. It was just so beautiful. While they were beautiful, I feel like Ahihiko and Haruki was meant to portray how bad and toxic things could be. How we can love someone so much that we would be willing to sacrifice a great deal of our own happiness just for the chance to be with them, how such a person could take advantage. While in the show and manga things turned out okay, I do not believe that it would have in RL. But still a good counter to Mafuyu and Uenoyama. Loved the show and your take on it.

I loved how you expressed your emotions over all the characters and volumes and how relatable your experience with this content is. Also I really do like your pronation of the characters, it’s cute. All I ever want from a book/manga/comic is to feel the inherent need to risk it all for the characters. If I have that, I will be a ride or die for any story/series 😂 I could not talk about this series without talking bout my struggles with BL. For real.
