    • @forceofnatureDGX
      @forceofnatureDGX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Plus the attack clause is relevant, too! You can get someone's pesky utility creature to attack into it, providing it doesn't have an activated ability that requires it to tap. It's not as good as removal, but as a landfall trigger, it's nice.

      @soleo2783 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ich3730 He is a bad draw engine(for the mana cost), attached to a beatstick with no evasion, with his only protection requiring you to throw away your card advantage, which is the reason you played him in the first place. Uncounterable is nice, but not that big of a deal, and no max hand size is so irrelevant that they put it on an untapped land and the result was pretty meh.
      If you want a vanilla body that draws cards at 7 mana in simic, you are better off playing something like zegana than nezahal.

      The one single place where I see place for that Hydra is Animar deck. You pay GGG and basically double the count of counters on Animar. If he has 5 you go to 10(actually it's up to 11, since Animar gets one by himself), which means all your next creatures will be cheaper by 10. But still very situational and limited, and sucks very bad without Animar out.

  • @Mach9330
    @Mach9330 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This upgrade guide doesn't feel very serious, as you would need to take out more than 10 cards to really make the deck work better. Here is how to make the deck better. First take out 9 lands, including Coral Atoll, Memorial to genius, Jungle Basin, Vivid Creek, Vivid Grove, and 4 Basic. Coral Atoll and Jungle Basin force you to return an untapped land to your hand, so they are very bad. There are better ways to draw cards than Memorial to Genius, and the Vivid Lands are tap lands that you don't even need. Put in the following lands : Myriad Landscape, Yavimaya Coast, War Room, Reliquary Tower, Guildless Commons, Arixmethes, the Slumbering Isle, Temple of Mystery, and another dual colored land. Myriad Landscape gets us more lands for Aesi's trigger, Yavimaya Coast is a dual land that comes into play untapped, War Room draws us cards by paying life equal to our commanders color identity, Guildless Commons is a better bounce land that doesn't require us to return an untapped land back to our hand, and Arixmethes is spell technically, but he taps for 2 and is a land primarily for as long as we want him to be, and he will trigger landfall. Temple of Mystery helps fix our mana and lets us make sure our next draw is what we want. The 2nd dual land can be whatever you want, as long as it taps for either green or blue. We are leaving 2 lands out because we still have over 40. Having lands to activate our commander is good, but we need to make sure we have plays to make, so we leave these our for some extra spice down in the other sections.
    Before we move on, let me say something. These guys have lately been complaining about stuff with high cmc. To that, I say, "We are in green." Ramp is our thing. Don't worry about high cmc so much. Trust me, the first time I played my upgraded deck, I played Aesi on turn 5 and the turn after, I had eight mana available and by turn 8, I had 14 mana available. In this deck, which is looking to ramp super hard, you will need high impact stuff to make it worth it.
    Now lets move onto to creatures. Take out the following; Stormtide Leviathan, Sphinx of Uthuun, Sharktocrab, Wickerbough Elder, Fathom Mage, Yavimaya Elder, Shipbreaker Kraken, Elder Deep-Fiend, Murkfiend Liege, Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer, Stumpsquall Hydra and Sporemound. We don’t have any Islandwalk synergy outside of Stormtide, so it’s not a good inclusion and will stall the game. Sphinx is too hit and miss, since our opponent can decide what we get essentially, so take it out. Yavimaya Elder is not as good as other options. You don’t need murkfiend liege, Molimo doesn’t do enough, Stumpsquall isn’t really good, since it would just be a big ol beater. Wickerbough Elder is not repeatable enough to be a worthwhile inclusion, we can do better than Fathom Mage for card draw, Elder Deep Fiend and Shipbreaker either don’t do enough or don’t do anything right away. Sporemound is out because there is a card that is a strict upgrade for the cmc.
    Here is what I would replace them with. Multani, Yavimaya Avatar is a strict and cheaper upgrade to Molimo. Trygon Predator is cheaper than Wickerbough Elder and more repeatable removal. Replace Murkfiend liege with Tatyova, Benthic Druid, as having a second functional copy of the commander never hurt anyone. For Yavimaya Elder and Stumpsquall, add in Sakura Tribe Scout and Llanowar scout, as these help ramp us and with a certain enchantment and a bounce land, equals infinite landfall triggers. Gilanra, Caller of Wirewood in for Fathom Mage, as it ramps us and draws us cards when we cast anything with 6+ cmc. Replace Stormtide Leivathan and Shipbreaker Kraken with Brinelin, Moon Kraken and Serpent of Yawning Depths. I kept most of the sea creature theme in my version of the deck, so Serpent of Yawning Depths make all my big beaters basically unblockable and Brinelin helps us control the board with our high cmc stuff. Swap in Prime Speaker Zegana for sphinx Uthuun, which can draw us more cards than Sphinx of Uthuun could ever hope to. For Elder Deepfiend, replace with Lorthos, Tidemaker, as it is a win condition with how it taps stuff down and they don’t immediately untap later. Zenidkar’s Roil for Sporemound, as 2/2’s are better than 1/1’s, and enchantments are harder to interact with than creatures. Lotus Cobra for Sharktocrab, because ramp is good. Since we didn’t replace 2 lands up top, we have room for 2 more creatures. They will be Kogla, Titan Ape and Thryx, the Sudden Storm. Thryx saves us mana by reducing the cost of our big spells and makes them un-counterable, so we can make our big splashy plays and not have to worry about some jerk holding Force of Will in his hands. Kogla can kill a troublesome creature on our opponents board and is more artifact and enchantment hate.
    For the Instants and Sorceries, I took out Into the Roil and Peel from Reality because they are not good forms of removal, Compulsive Research because we want to put the lands onto the battlefield and not in the grave, Urban Evolution because you may not draw into another land. Fact or Fiction is out for the same reason as Sphinx of Uthuun, we want to draw all the cards, especially if we pull out our win-cons. I was tempted to keep Spitting Image in, since it could be good in the right situation, but ultimately, I decided against it. Simic Charm is also out.
    Now put in Rapid Hyrbization or Pongify, Reality Shift, Broken Bond, and Incubation/Incongruity, as these give us direct ways to kill/ exile our opponents stuff and Broken Bond is removal plus ramp if we have a land in our hand. Put in Return of the Wildspeaker and another land ramp spell, since Return can draw us many cards or pump our whole team. I put in Verdant Confluence for the land ramp since I had a copy of it, but as long as it gets more lands into play, with our commander out, that’s more card draw. For the simic charm, another bounce spell that hits multiple things is good. If you have Cyclonic Rift, put that in, but anything else that bounces multiple stuff will still work.
    For Artifacts and Enchantments, Ior Ruin Expedition, Retreat to Kazandu, Simic Signet and Seer’s Sundial are out. Kazandu is replaced with Retreat to Coralhelm, which part of the infinite landfall combo with the scouts that I was talking about. Ior Expedition, replace with something that lets you play more lands. If you have Burgeoning, put that in, as this one of the decks that card is good in, letting you play lands on your opponents turn and drawing you more cards with the commander out. Replace Seer’s Sundial with Elemental Bond, as we are playing lots of big boys, so this will draw us more cards for free. Jimmy and Josh are Right about needing a win con, so I put in Dragonthrone of Tarkir. Jimmy and Josh complain way too much about the high cmc, and yeah it is a lot to get it on field and equip, but we are in green and all about putting down lands, so this is not an issue. I felt that a repeatable Overwhelming Stampede effect was better than a one of. With even a 4 creatures out, as long as one of them is a big boy, someone is dying if this resolves. You can also throw in Overwhelming stampede as well so you have more chances to get this effect.
    Ultimately, you can do the deck however you want, I just wanted to show how I did mine to show you that you need to do more than take out 10 cards. At the very least, even if you go a different route, at least replace the bad lands that I mentioned and put in some good ones and Tatyova.

    Crop Rotation, Animist's Awakening or Nissa's Pilgrimage for a better land hunt (swap with something like Search for Tommorrow) ~ $1.05, $0.90 and $0.25 respectively
    Ruin Crab for making opponents mill cards (Note: not great against graveyard loving decks)~$1.10
    Rogue's Passage for getting the big creatures past their defense ~$0.25
    Mana Breach for the land bounce that also forces opponents to land bounce ~$2.55
    Druid Class for lifegain and extra land play ~$0.40
    Wizard Class to have no max hand size which is key in this deck ~$0.65
    Broken Bond for target destruction (swap with something else with destruction in deck) plus land drop ~$0.30
    Parcelbeast for land drop and card draw ~$0.25
    Horn of Greed for extra card draw for everyone (because why not) ~$9
    Tada! Look how far I stretched that $25 budget to upgrade this deck!
    Also, do NOT remove Nezahal! Can't be countered, no max hand size, card draw that forces opponents to be picky in what they play, AND can be bounced/recast by discarding 3 cards? Sorry Command Zone but you just don't know what your talking about when you say remove this one.

    Not bad. Given the style of the deck though, I’m also adding in a mod of my own, a Blackblade reforged. Combined with the ramping capabilities of the deck, the sol ring and swift boots already in the deck, and all of these other modifications, this combo has the potential to swing in for 10+ commander damage on turn 4 or 5

    While I agree on a lot of this, they severely underestimate Nezahal. It is 7 mana, but it is very likely to draw its controller a lot of cards, much in the same way Consecrated Sphinx does. And unlike Sphinx, it'll replace itself in most cases, given the spell used to remove it usually triggers its draw. It can also dodge removal in ways Sphinx can't. I don't think Nezahal should be one of the cards cut.

    I must say that the tone of the show changed toward a more competative way of building decks. I miss the "If you like to play the big spells like Tomokratis than you can do that too" in the show. Not only in this episode, but in the whole podcast. I only hear " It#s not efficient enough" or "It doesn't do enough Y for X Mana". I'm a volthos-player and in these days sometimes I don't feel represented anymore in this podcast and I am sad about this. You guys brought me the essence of the format. In the early days, you've would have said to Aesi: "Wow, what a powerhouse! The only downside is that you really can play him at turn or six, when all your opponents played their commander already". Today you 'sell' this info to the people like you talking about a heap of unworthy dirt. I really miss the times you've said "we turn this deck from a power 4 to a power 6 or 7 deck". Today it's actually mor a 8+ if you put more than 20$ as a relacement budget on the table.
    I was looking for a proper way to integrate the color green into my Slinn Voda deck, asking myself if this would totally change the tone of the -to that point- mono blue deck. How can I keep the spirit of a seamonsters deck, when I put green in it? For me, Aesi is gift! I through out all the green powerhouse-card like Avenger of Zendikar and put in Charix.

These decks are made to make big expensive splashy plays and is put together for someone who wants to slam big sea creatures after making a bunch of mana. Also, the board wipes not being damage based? And there being way more ramp and card draw than the boros deck? This is a simic deck.. duh? Come on guys. Yeah, their philosophy of trying to shove every deck into the 7 or 8 power level is kind of getting old. Big dumb durdley idiot creatures and stupid impractical combos are the reason to play commander. This stuff just doesn't work other places. Them constantly leading the charge on the community making stronger and faster decks rubs me the wrong way sometimes. Why couldn't the additions have been to make a moderately functional themed deck or something? It doesn't always have to be about powering it up...

    • @chrismarlow9585
      @chrismarlow9585 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree they've gone down this route too much in the last year. This deck is a fun big mana deck while the boros one is a fun voltron equipment deck. I've heard the boros deck is actually better because it is fast and powerful if it's not hit by removal quickly. This simic deck durdles then does splashy plays and big stuff later. I wish they'd leaned into those aspects and made the upgrades for casual players looking to make the decks they've bought a bit better at what they do.

    Got the deck and made a sea monster bounce deck. The return to hand board wipes are imo pretty good, gets around hexproof/indestructible/ward and makes them waste their turn setting up again. Throw in a eternal witness and mystic sanctuary and you can get your board wipes back and do it again every turn, play your board wipe, play EW, bounce all non sea monsters, get EW back in hand, play EW get board wipe back and repeat. Build your board full of sea monsters and bounce everything else and attack directly. Make your opponents choose between building their board or stopping you. Aesi is just there if you want to dig through your deck even faster. Add in unnatural growth and your sea monsters hit for 10+ per creature or Imoti and cascade into other sea monsters.

    Arixmethes- 2BG: Starts as land that ramps you until you've cast 5 spells with it on the table... and turns into a 12/12 that still ramps you
    Stormsurge Kraken-3BB: A Hexproof 5/5 BUT as long as you control your commander gets +2/2 and can draw you 2 cards if someone blocks it
    Nadir Kraken- 1BB: 2/3 Kraken that can get a +1/1 and make a 1/1 Tentacle Creature Token every time you draw a card if you pay 1 Generic
    Tidal Barracuda-3B: 3/4 Fish Any player can cast spells as though they had flash AND
    Your opponents can't cast spells during your turn
    Koma, Cosmos Serpent-3GGBB: 6/6 Serpent that can't be countered and makes a 3/3 Serpent at the beginning of EACH upkeep.
    You can then sac a serpent to tap a creature and blank its activated abilities for a turn OR make Koma indestructible

    Nezahol was a bad cut. It can pull a ton of weight and is basically an unintactable card draw engine, because as along as they have to do something to it by playing a spell, you get card draw and they waste resources. More often than not, I see the danger noodle sit around and draw its owner 7-9 cards before being forced out of the game one way or another. added with the extra land plays and potential for recurring discarded lands, Nezahol holds its own here.

      Playing Aesi T4 is just as easy as playing Tatyova T4, but you get a free Exploration effect and much better P/T instead of basically meaningless lifegain.
      You could make an argument for T3 Tatyova, but that's a hard one to pull off, especially consistently.

    I know this is a year late but Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle is a great card for this deck. I find it works better as the commander. Stumpsquall Hydra can put the counters on him while he is a land, and with him being a 12/12, if you play it right, you can one shot someone after a board wipe. He triggers landfall and is immune to those boardwipes too. And being a land makes it harder to destroy, until you need him as a creature.

    i agree with all of these except
    35:45 why...why would you cut the budget alternative to consecrated sphinx plus did you not read it you get to draw every time someone cast a noncreate it also gives infinite hand size and there's a lot of ramp in the deck and plus it can protect itself eons better than the sphinx can

    Reshape the Earth and Scapeshift are two good cards I am thinking would work well in this deck.

    If I run the reap the tides deck, could I just swap aesi into the deck and put uro as the commander? I have a foil uro I really want to use as a commander, but in this deck idk if it will be good without modification. If I do need to modify the deck to make uro suitable as the commander, then what should I swap out and put in?

    In the case of these decks, while on the face they seem to be made for new players, from my experience with playing them for the past week they seem to work incredibly well if the player fully understands the deck. In the case of this one, using the various tap/bounce to help protect against threats while keeping a full hand is the way to play.
    With the other, if the player knows the common sunforger strategies it's very easy to make Wyleth a persistent threat while keeping advantage. I really hate to shit in the hands that gave us these, but a good deck and an intuitive deck are not exactly synonyms.

    Josh and Jimmy sound so ready for the year of commander to be over. The shift the team puts in to get these episodes out must be insane.

    My favourite deck to this day so many ways to build it the commander boring yes but simple and good can’t go wrong even as a precon

    What they need is a special, magical, two headed commander. 6 players, each in 3 2h giant pairs, playing two-colour only decks that share a colour with their partner (get it... commander partner, not partner commanders hehe) so if one of the 2h plays Gruul, the other must contain red or green. It'd also help showcase commander with 3 instead of 4 (as not everyone gets a fourth player for it)

    What's better than 1 Tatyova? 2. And also Arixmethes. I'd slot those 2 before cutting all the sea monsters that are still around after you Whelming Wave.
    Which you then plop the Archeomancer you just bounced back to your hand and get the wave back.

    14:09 “scourge of fleets requires you to attack”…um no, that’s just incorrect. I play aesi not only for the additional land but bc sea creatures are cool and quite viable. It also makes landfall easier to swallow for other players at the table.

    My first game with this deck I replaced a forest and an island with Shark Typhoon and... some kinda counter I think? Either way, minus those two lands, it played beautifully

    These prices for the reprints seem way to high.
    I know the american market is crazy overprized but we talking about triple the price from last month in europe.
    And Nezahal was 50c last time I checked.... before the precon was even spoiled.

    Coiling Oracle and Explore may not guarantee a ramp, but even if they don’t ramp, it’s a minimum card draw for 2 CMC. However, in Simic and its draw/scry capability, the odds of dropping a land with them is pretty good.

    Placed a big order on cards (for me that is) and forgot to add the command zone in the website to give you all credit. I had to call customer service over an issue regarding the order and they were able to add or give you credit or whatever helps when we add command zone to the link.

    Spitting image a nyxbloom ancient a few times and make your lands tap for 81. Throw in a braingeyser, blue suns zenith and a pull from tomorrow to dump that mana into and lab maniac out while also playing cards like body of knowledge and sturmgeist to play voltron need be. Also can play a ton of counterspells to make sure you can keep doing what you want. Not really budget but still lol

    Tireless Tracker is relatively cheap financially speaking, I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned right after Courser of Kruphix.

    I play tested it out of box and honestly removing high CMC isn't the issue i took out 6 basic lands and that was the best thing for the deck

    Maybe its just me but there feels like a missed opportunity for this. Hear me out.
    When doing a video like this why is there not a link to cardkingfom with these selected cards in a bundle type "buy it now" option.
    Card kingdom should have a page with link dedicated to "as seen on command zone" section. Not only is there the affiliate link but also using the creator code at checkout making it a double dip for command zone marketing.

    Unless it's been confirmed otherwise, Aesi might be from Kaldheim. Viking mythos is no stranger to massive sea serpents, not straits as geographical formations in seafaring. That, and those houses on the coast there look norse in their design. Just a theory, but it could be so; I'm seeing Kalheim everywhere I go.

    being simic. I think keeping with the sea tribal is a better way to go. There are A LOT of cheap green/simic ramps and wonderful themed cards that could be put into it.
