  • ( www.TFLtruck.com ) In this episode of the TFL Truck Cheap Jeep Challenge we have to spend big money on expensive repairs. The transmission is looking worse for wear and must come out to be disassembled. Fixing the bad transmission is a big job and one that we simply aren't good enough to undertake. That's where Zach's transmission comes in to save the day! But did we completely blow the budget?

Zack is rare. There are VERY few transmission guys today with the knowledge and skills to do what Zack does. The two biggest rip-offs in automotive repair are Transmission and Engine Rebuilds.

yep most are parts swappers (not rebuilders). 2400 bucks is well worth it ( i assume 1300 in labor and 1100 in parts). What type of warranty doez Zack offer on the tranny? personally I would have probably swapped it out with a rebuilt ax-15. Woudl make the jeep more marketable down the road once you sell on bring a trailer

"Cheap Jeep" the definition is different for even me. Cheap repairs require you doing the work yourself. And doing the track down at junk yards or somehow wholesale parts or even get lucky to find someone online that has what you need. These "Cheap Jeep" episodes here are never going to be cheap because someone else is doing the work for 1 thing. That is always going to double your budgets. And then as you are re-discovering old Jeeps are like onions, the more you open it up, the more problems you have to deal with. So now you have a "death wobble". Add another 1K easily to fix that issue with diagnostic times and parts. ;) This vehicle will match or exceed the last Jeep in costs easily. And that was OVER budget too. Nonetheless it is very informative for people to know when buying a Jeep you have these issues. :)

"It's in the junkyard for a reason"
I have to disagree. More often than not 95% of the parts on a junkyard car are in working order, yeah you got to determine what failed and maybe avoid that system, but the rest are good usable parts.

      I agree

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sadly 99% of the time you have no idea what the failed part(s) may be....or may not be...maybe just a pissed off soon-to-be ex-wife got pissed and scrapped the husband's car, truck, suv, etc. in spite, maybe nothing wrong at all....someone died nobody wanted the 20 year old car that's in mint condition, so they just send it to the scrap yard....course then there are the ones you walk up to and go well gee they probably blew the transmission and engine up in it by the complete trash pit inside the vehicle so you know it wasn't maintained at all...sadly its so hard to tell on some what's wrong, and the junkyards don't tend to car, nor do they bother writing on the windshield for example, bad engine bad transmission for example. Sure would be nice if they did, so a potential buyer could say oh it has a good transmission, just what I need, or oh it has a blown engine so I'll pass on that, although I'm sure some could be rebuilt, but just saying it would certainly be nice to know what its in the scrap yard for.

Zack seems very good at his job however, rebuilding that French disaster is not smart! Whether you keep it or turn it down the road the Peugeot needs to become a boat anchor and an AX15 installed. I’ve seen brand new ones and rebuilt ones (just as good or better than our friend Zach) grenade themselves in well under 20K used moderately Offroad. This is not a knock on Zach but I’ve dealt with these junk boxes since the 80’s when Jeep started using them. Just drive it like grandma would and it probably (??) will hold up. Good luck.

Renault had engineering sharing agreements with Peugeot and Volvo. That's how the Jeeps ended up with the junk Peugeot transmissions as well as the Eagle Premier getting the PRV V6 engine. Chrysler bought AMC in 1987 but they didn't have the money, engineering, or suppliers to instantly change from French sources parts to Chrysler sourced. There were still AMC and Renault logos on some Jeep and Eagle parts all the way into the early 90's.

I am a red seal certified auto mechanic and have a decade of experience working on jeeps nearly exclusively. They could have bought an ax15 and rebuilt it with better part with the money they spent getting the expensive parts for the ba10 and would have gotten a better transmission for a truck that needed that kind of upgrade.that rebuilt transmission might last this owner but not the next one after the lift and tires are added. the BA10 is basically made of glass. The Comanche needs the easiest mods there are to keep them on the road.

I love my ‘88 MJ if y’all are ever wheelin it in Texas let me know I’d like to tag along. When I had my automatic rebuilt it was like 2400$ too. I went long arm from IRO with 35’s after that and haven’t had a issue since.

This is the OCD, but when I tear into something, I make sure it's clean. Tearing apart that trans while dirt was compacted on the outside was just ridiculous. That would've driven me nuts. Also, a paint job on the outside would've been a nice touch.

That's really interesting material for synchros. This might be one of the reasons Peugeot cars do well in Africa.
It's kind of funny saying it's a 'car' transmission. Lotus put a Citroën 'truck' transmission in the Esprit.

Why would anyone put one cent into the BA10? Chrysler switched to the AX15 midway thru the 89 model year for a reason. Also need to address those renix electronics. I de Frenchified my 89 Comanche as much as possible.

$2400?!?!? You can buy a fully rebuilt BA10 for $1450. Even if you can't do the swap yourself, should cost about $500 to have a shop do it for you.

Need more techs like Zack. Agree with him on the maintenance and actually have done the 30k services on all my automatic transmissions since I started driving, usually do 60k services on my manual transmissions....sure a hell of a lot cheaper than a transmission rebuild.
$2400, that's what it cost me to have the A4LD in my Bronco 2 rebuilt with all the upgrades and updates done, should be good to go for another 30 years since I actually maintain my vehicles unlike the previous owner of my Bronco 2 who towed it behind a motorhome improperly and caused severe transmission damage. My Bronco 2 now has a rebuilt engine/transmission, next up some new paint.

William Todd had an 86 in high school. The previous owner had swapped the 2.9 for a 3.8 from a t-bird. Ran like a champ but the added power took out the overdrive (making the 4-speed auto a 3-speed auto). Other then that it shifted great.
Lost it in the rain on a greasy road and rolled it after the l/f tire caught a drainage pipe. It was black w/ red interior.

Zack is great. Video itself may be worth $2400 spent, but for my Jeep I’d rather have swapped in a junkyard AX15 for that cash. Some junkyards will give you a 30-day guarantee on parts so your mechanic can check it out and service it before installing it.
