    Ok so…
2003 is probably the Most dark, it’s GOATED
2012 is awesome, the 3D animation is really good (it’s even anime inspired with the expressions they make)
And rise is simply Stunning, the animation is gorgeous, and it’s just a fresh take on the turtles.
I recommend all three honestly, they are all amazing.

gosh yes the animation in rise is just phenomenal. I love going thru some of the hand drawn storyboards and just like looking in awe at how incredible these animators are!!! Like the storyboards for the Shredder fight at the end of season 2 are just SO well done. The fight scenes in that show are just always so incredibly dynamic and fun to watch. I always notice something new every time I see them. Especially the fight on Big Mama's train in season 1!!!!

2003 is also the truest to the OG Mirage Comics with a few changes like Shredder being an Utrom which was made to justify the fact they couldn`t kill him off at first like in The Comic because of that notorious 4Kids censorship although it wasn`t as strict as it would later become.

@@ReactZonesoh definitely, I don’t want to spoil anything in case you watch it, but some of the storylines can be fun while others can be so dark it makes you think for a few moments how this is a kids show, each individual turtle has some about them but most the dark stuff revolves around shredder and splinter, there’s also some with April, and to separate it from other tmnt shows some characters die, I won’t say who but this does have a few character deaths, not off screen ether, they actually let you see it happen.

As someone who has watched all the versions of TMNT can genuinely say that 2003 is the best. They definitely dug through the comics to create their storylines and and they weren't afraid to take the show to some very dark places. Don't get me wrong, they still have some light hearted very funny episodes, but the core of the show is a bit more serious.
And Michangelo is always my boy. There is something about the underestimated member of the team showing up, showing out & kicking ass that just makes it so much more delightful, if just because it's unexpected.

tbh it'd probably be best to go through 2003, 2012 and Rise in that order if you're interested in all three anyway, considering that each show uses/re-imagines characters first introduced in one of its predecessors or has other hints towards the previous shows, so the best way to get those may be to simply go through each show chronologically
2012 especially draws from both the 87 series and the 2k3 series, along with other TMNT sources they had at the time to try and combine everything into a well-rounded series
(also, both 2k3 and 2k12 have crossed over with 87 at one point or another!)
Not to mention, as much as I love 2012 the most, 2003 has some really amazing arcs that are definitely a must see

2003 is my absolute favorite. It is darker in tone, actually adapting the comic arcs. It has seasonal arcs while balancing episodic structure. Most episodes are 2-parters.
But 2012 is good too. Every new adaption I feel is good at adapting what was introduced in the previous version but still doing their own thing.

Ok so I present my case for the series you most definitely have to watch:
TMNT 2003: Adapted from the comics and had Peter Laird’s “blessing” so to speak. Since you mentioned liking 2D animation, this would be the perfect one to get you started with. Everyone gets their time to shine, their characters mature and evolve seamlessly, Splinter in this iteration is THE BEST FATHER you will ever see (he’s also an incredibly badass sensei). Their strongest seasons are 1 to 5, seasons 6-7 are their weakest ones because the network got scared. Their main focus at times is Leonardo, who goes through the most traumatic event during season 3 (Donatello also goes through some traumatic stuff for 3 seasons) and it has THE DARKEST, most famous episode (SAINW) in the whole series. This series also has the most BADASS VILLAINS, one better than the other! (The one you found the most jacked is Hun, leader of the Purple Dragons) And did I mention these guys go through one badass evolution during season 5???
Rise of the TMNT: Again, for fans of the 2D animation (and Ninjago vibes) you will absolutely LOVE this one. This iteration only has 2 seasons (sadly), hated by the so called “old school fans” and wasn’t doing good on toy sales (well, how could they, their toys were kinda ugly). Nevertheless it is a fresh take on the TMNT formula. The turtles are all different species, (Raph-snapping turtle, Leo-red eared slider, Don-softshell and Mike-box turtle). Raphael is the oldest brother and the leader until the last season and the movie (which was also very controversial at the time). Their Splinter is… different, but with a good reason! This Splinter has a very interesting take on his life and mutation which explain his behavior for most of the series. Rise of the TMNT also implemented the mystical weapons/power element that already see on TMNT 2003 season 5. Overall this series is fun! Very energetic, lots of family love; the plot is right in the title! They’re rising, they’re growing to finally become the TMNT we all know and love!

yeah i think when they got to back to the future thats when networks started trying to make things more "kid friendly". I mean i still loved it, i loved all 2003 turtles content. i honestly wished they'd have done more with the turtles evil clones and felt kind of let down that it just seemed like they cut it short just cause. the characters art looked cleaner and shinier than the older style which i assume also means they were evolving and adapting the artwork, probably to pull them away from the darker time period of the starting seasons. unfortunately the darker theme was the whole reason the comic's creator wanted to create 2003. I will admit tho that my favorite episode was the one where they fought Viral in the virtual reality dome because if you look at the animatronics one of them looks like Martial Moo Montana from Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa, its a show i grew up watching when i went to visit my aunt and ive just loved it ever since.

The one I know the most is the 2003 series thru Saturday morning cartoon blocks. As for how dark it is; one episode was never aired on tv until the dvd collection came out but a handful episodes are considered dark. The one I mentioned earlier contains elements of body horror and mental illness. Fans of this series will know what I'm talking about. If any of you can give this series a better critique than I can, then go for it.

The opening of Rise is especially amazing due to it happening in _one single shot._ The Oner is an honestly tricky thing to do in animation. Take "The Bad Guys", for example. The opening scene is done in one continuous shot with no cuts lasting two minutes, 25 seconds and seven frames. The longest one-shot in Dreamworks Animation history.

Rise is a lot closer in tone to the 87 series than 03 and 12. It’s one of the many things that turned many people away from it when it came out; it was very comedy focused and purposefully set out to break some of the expected ‘rules’ of how the previous tmnt shows went, which was very polarizing the the fans of the 03 and 12 series. I absolutely adore all three shows but am actually going to suggest against watching them in order of how they aired. After binging a total 12 seasons of overall pretty serious and dark 03 and 12, the tonal whiplash of rise might ruin the experience. I would recommend either starting with rise as a transition from what you know of 87 and then go into 03 then 12. OR watch 03, then rise as a fun little pallet cleanser(rise is only 1.5 seasons and a movie) and then go into 12.
    Hope that helps!
Side note I’ve seen you’ve ask other people to explain why they think 12 is ‘darker’ than 03 and usually not get an answer cause they don’t want to spoil, and I feel I can answer why spoiler free. In both 03 and 12 some pretty dark messed up stuff can happen and in both it’s treated very seriously when it does. But for 12 the ✨Trauma(tm) lingers✨ and you can feel the characters stress and turmoil over stuff long after it happens. 12 feels gets in your head man, it’ll mess you up

    • @gothic_ace2037
      @gothic_ace2037 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

i dunno man, i felt like the stress and trauma lingered in 2003 but in a different way that made it seem not as impactful as a whole, more mentally buried but you knew it definitely left lingering impressions, i know leo couldnt seem to get over his issues of needing to be the perfect leader (you can see him crack under the scrutiny when they were training to fight tengu shredder because everyone else was succeeding yet he was failing). Raph was always angry and resentful about not getting to be the leader, feeling like his sensei saw him as lesser to his brother and like his brother only saw him as just a flunky to boss around. Mikey is good at hiding his feelings but you can see the doubt slip out from time to time when he feels like he isnt contributing. As for Donnie, he feels the pressure similar to leo but in a different way. He has to be the smart one, if he isnt smart enough to be the glue that holds them together, if his gadgets dont measure up then he feels its his fault if something bad happens to his family.

Well of the 4. 1987 och 2012 the fav.
Darkest: 2023, 2012 and sometimes ries of the tmnt.
Closest to the comics: 2023 and 2012.
Rise of the tmnt, more of an action comedy but some of the stories are definitely darker.

As someone who's watched every iteration of Turtles (yeah even that live action one they did) here's the breakdown
1987: Takes massive liberties with the source material so it'd appeal to kids more and be a Saturday morning cartoon.
2003: Follows the original comic story closer for about 5 seasons then goes into its own tangent from season 6 onward.
2012: Does its own thing, but pays homage to just about every concurrent turtle source available at the time it was airing.
Rise: Again does its own thing, very contained and has some fun ideas on how the turtles are portrayed. Also has a movie on Netflix since the series only had two seasons.
If you wanted an idea of how the original comic book from the 80s told the story I'd recommend watching 2003 first. Just keep in mind as mentioned earlier it goes off on its own tangent starting with I think season 6. 87 has some nostalgia for how cheesy it was, but it also has the least amount of Casey Jones which is why I struggle recommending it to anyone. 2012 seems rocky because of the 3D animation, but it has some great storytelling and heartfelt moments throughout. Rise definitely goes for more of a comedic tone, but when it's got some very endearing character moments and great fight choreography.
