    Want a smoker?

I'm genuinely not kidding when I say this think could win in a bar fight:

As I use the lathe more and more in my larger projects, I'm beginning to realize how cathartic turning is. So I thought I'd test out making this cocktail smoker.

How to make, or how I made this cocktail smoker
    Let’s get into it
I started by squaring a piece of curly cherry
Then cut it down to 4 equal 4 an ⅛” pieces
And laminated them together into a turning blank
Once the glue cured, I used a square to mark center on either face
Then placed it between the headstock and tail stock and began rounding over the sharp edges until the blank was cylindrical
I could have used the table saw to cut away more of the corners before mounting to the lathe, but I just felt like turning.
With the cylinder roughed out, I used the table saw and cross cut sled to cut the smoker down to size as a test cut for cutting the lid away from the smoker
After that, I mounted the lid to the spinded, and turned a slight lip to sit inside the smoker
    Then, sanded it down.
Next, i anchored the smoker to the spindle and carved out the chamber that would hold the wood chips
With that complete, I removed it from the spindle and repositioned the smoker between the headstock and tailstock and got to work turning the chimney
While I get ready to sand it down, let me invite you to check out more behind the scenes content over on patreon, link in description below.
Once sanded I pre drilled the center point for the chimney , then used a 1 / 8” forstner bit to hollow it out. Making sure to drill from either end to avoid tear out
    I’ll save those for later.
With that done, I used a ¼” forstner to drill across the chimney to allow for better smoke collection within the glass.
The, used an orbital sander to tidy up the top of the lid not previously sanded while on the lathe
And finished it off with a food safe butcher block oil.
Once the oil had dried, I cut a piece of fine mesh to fit inside the smoker to act as a debris catch and hold the wood chips that will be used to create the smoke
I sanded down any sharp edges,
    And that’s a wrap.
Also if you’re in the market for an American made, milled to perfection, Shaker that is also hefty enough to take out an unruly bar patron, my good friends over at C&D tools have the right one for you.
    Cheers!
    Until next time.

Came for the smoker, stayed for the jazz. Great work!

cutting the cylinder on the table saw is so dangerous. Even with the sled and small bites. If it grabs, it can take your fingers or throw that block at your head.
Please use a thin parting tool while on the lathe. or use the bandsaw with the round piece in a V sled. both faster and safer.

Really cool! I think you're absolutely nailing the midcentury aesthetic as of late.
I do have to ask a process question: why not part off the lid on the lathe itself? The table saw method obviously worked, but at least you wouldn't have to deal with re-mounting the two parts of the smoker and turning them back to round (which is where I inevitably screw up).

      Aw, thanks so much!
I think more than anything, technical proficiency! I’m going to take some time before doing the small batch orders to try and make one using the parting tool.

Nope. That's been my biggest concern on all of these DIY cocktail smokers. Heat is one thing, but direct fire is another

Buy yourself a glue brush. Silicone basting brush works good. Let the glue dry and it peels right off the silicone bristles.

How did you remove the screw holes from the lid from mounting your faceplate? That is the ONLY part I can't figure out. Nice work!
Since you drilled all the way through the chimney, do you get debris in your drink that slips through the mesh? I'm making my first one tomorrow. Nervous, but ready for the challenge.

Good question, Cody! I trimmed and sanded the attachment holes away. A bandsaw would work great, or a patient sander haha.
And yes, when the carbon got small enough, a little would fall through the mesh, but I’ve actually been upgrading the mesh with both a tighter weave and messing around with chemically etched screens. I messed around with closing the port but found it inhibited the inversion that draws the smoke into the glass more than I’d like.
      Good luck! Send a picture!

@@HonestWorkDesigns I would mount to a wood faceplate with double-sided tape, the bring up the tail stock to secure it. I’m going to try that.
