His music is not for everybody-but if you get it, it’s wonderful and you hear & learn something new every time you listen. And he’s a fairly good actor as well.
I'm SO glad Worldwide Pants, or whomever, is releasing this tranche of high quality videos. This particular one has resonance as I saw its original airing and I'd thought I'd misheard him say he was born in a cab in Valparaiso, Indiana. I've been looking for this clip for over almost forty years! Tom has quite the sense of humor: there are no cabs in Valpo ha ha.
This was TOM WAITS's first ever appearance on the LETTERMAN show.the first of at least ten appeances.I like the fact that both he and DAVE have a mutual friendship.
At first, I thought that tinsel was a fashion statement, and then I realized: "Wait...this is Tom Waits!" His explanation of why it was there was in itself a fashion statement.
Swordfish Trombone was the album Letterman is holding up. This would be a whole new sound for Waits , and it would be followed by Rain Dogs and Frank's Wild 'Year, two of my favorite 80's albums.
@@colinwilliams553 This is just my perception - it seems Waits learned a few things, holds an instrument, can sit at a piano and noodle. He has his act, nothing wrong with that. See the Black and White Roy Orbison show, for example. His voice sounds to me like a white guy performing in a minstrel show. Just my $2. (Inflation).
This man is a genius. Brilliant artist, fascinating person, razor wit, ridiculously cool.
He's a fine actor. People might like his acting job in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
Then there’s Tom Waits
He’s ok.
If you can connect with his music, it's like being part of an exclusive club.

And he’s a fairly good actor as well.
And a kick-ass narrator to boot! Loved his work on the John Baldessari doc :)
The piano has been drinking, not me.
He was absolutely fantastic in Down by Law (and Fishing with John but that's a completely different story)
What. A. Voice. On The Nickel is what of the greatest vocal performances in the history of music. A unique genius.

It was always so great to watch an interview where Dave really admired the musician. Dave and Tom had some hilarious conversations!
I’d love to see a long form interview with Tom Waits on Dave’s Netflix show. They seem to genuinely enjoy each other’s company.
That would be wonderful. Really hope that happens before either of them retires.

I love that he keeps looking for his cigarettes.
Tom's voice is something else when singing. But his music is amazing. He was pretty young then.
The definition of artist
My absolute favorite guest. Always good for a few stories.
down by law - great movie - tom was great in it
Always a great guest.

This same year in 1983 Tom Waits acted in 2 Francis F. Coppola films The Outsiders & Rumble Fish.
This was great . Thank you.
That, kids, is called an album.
Tom Waits an American treasure! Carlin n Zappa clips please !
So far, I saw this interview about ten times.. And I never understood why did he change his voice after the commercial 😂
So strange!
Haha right? Maybe the producers told him he needed to speak up or bring his energy up and that's what came out?
Maybe he smoked a pack in that cut.
Did he sing a song between both parts? That could explain it
Fantastic. Get any of the great Warren Zevon's stuff with Dave up soon please!
Look like he just woke up from his car.LOL
Somebody said Tom looks like a guy who went looking for a gas leak with a candle, lol.
Since 2020 it's become more commonplace for people to be living in car's I can relate to this
Here come the "Heath Ledger based his Joker voice on Tom Waits" comments.
What a head of hair
"Guam" - Tom Waits

Why so serious?
Tom Waits is funny as hell, and he has some great music. He wrote the book on cool.

dave totally outclassed. Tom's IQ is prob over 200 what does dave think he will pull? i like dave but that was uncalled for.
Tom's hair is better than his music
it's even better than your comment
@@rhuephus Hey yooo
Says someone that won't expose his music or his hair. My guess is you don't know music or hair.
my taste in hair is better than your taste in hair

An opportunistic fraud.
huh? why do you think this?
@@s.ebright7620 see Verju9000 - genius, brilliant artist, razor wit - yes! Musician? No. Waits holds a guitar, sits at a keyboard.

Terrific actor and performer. As a musician he’s a fraud.
What the HELL does that supposed to mean???

No more so than Leon Redbone, who's Double Time album I love. Try listening to Waits' Blue Valentine.
