I love that Tom and David seem to genuinely get along and respect each other. I love Tom but he is a hard guy to interview but him and dave play off each other so well.
Tom waits, Bob Dylan, Leonardo cohen are all up the league in poetic song writing, but what sets Tom apart from the rest is the emotional dimension that he radiates through his voice, performance and perpetual creativity. What a legend!
Makes me think of the Hunter Thompson quote "“There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”"
"Frank came to me in a dream... We spoke, well, of many things..." Audience cracks up and Tom looks at them like "did I say something funny?" Love that moment.

George Duvivier on bass on Tom's first appearance is a real treasure. He's one of the all-time great jazz bassists and the fact that so many exceptional jazz musicians (Shelly Manne, Jim Hugart, Pete Christlieb, etc) played with him speaks a lot to his unique talent. He's gone on to other, more eclectic sonic vistas since, but none of that takes away from the majesty of those early years.
He clearly respects waits and Dave is not known to be that warm . He wants waits to be comfortable and respects his talent . Waits is humble and dave is enjoying that he is there and helping the interview as best as he can . Shows waits has talent for dave to show love.
@@jeffreycherep8264 Fantastic . And Dave Clearly likes waits very much. Dave does not help along a guest like he made sure to help along Waits unless Dave respects the guest and respects his talent. Dave is Great & clever with the lines but Tom Waits has the perfect come back response and Dave loved & respected him. Made sure to have him on his final week. 🤗
I admire how Letterman has these great people on his show. The first appearance he is a bit uncertain, then he chats with them, maybe they perform, and BOOM Dave is a fan, and Dave is the best fan they can have. He did that with Tom, and Peter O’Toole, and Richard Harris. Kudos to Letterman for enriching all of us with insights into these great people.
Tom Waits is so refreshingly out of his mind! He has always been one of my all time favorites! A true original American out of his flipping mind musical and creative genius.
interesting juxtaposition of comments. reads almost as one point. I'd amend the original to, "Tom Waits is so refreshingly IN his mind" Tom tastes out of step becuz we're trained to secede from our minds. he refuses. which makes him intolerable to those comfortably conformingly self-seceded
@@oughtssought1198 I share your sentiments on Tom Waits, particularly that he is IN his mind AND that he's not only tolerable, he is beloved. I've admired him and his quirky perspective since I first encountered him on the Martin Mull/Fred Willard Fernwood Tonight show from the '70s. Whether he played a DJ in "Down by Law" or a prospector in the Ballad of Buster Scruggs, his portrayals were as believable and unique as they were a joy to watch. His music is wholy original and fabulous. Thanks for this. I first saw Tom live in 1976 and have been smitten ever since. An American treasure. Musician, poet, and a sharp wit. I hope more get to see this!
Studio musicians from his first albums, jazz guys, were worried about him. In private life he broke character and had a steady 50 year marriage that started before these interviews. His truly amazing stuff started after.
I'm 70 years of age and although had heard the name Tom Waits many times over the years I had never knowingly listened to any of his music. Or seen or heard of him at all. Then i came across this. Not so sure I'm into his music but the dry sardonic wit in the chats is pure genius. And to think I only found this because at the close of a BBC interview with Jordan Peterson by Anne McElvoy the only thing they seemed to agree upon throughout the interview was that they both liked Tom Waits!! So I had to look him up. Thanks for whoever posted this compilation!!
Mr. Waits' musical & poetic style is truly a matter of taste, or maybe one of those things you grow to appreciate over time. No question at all, he's funny as heck, if you like "dry" and "irony" (I love both). I saw some of these performances, hit-and-skip over years of watching Letterman. Only NOW are my feeds (musical and otherwise) populating and volunteering with Waits' work. And I've grown to love most of it. One of the remaining artists of "way old stuff," or things styled after that, or an improvement on that.
Tom is somebody that just grows on you. He didn’t start going on these shows until he gained popularity but his best work in my opinion were the albums closing time and heart of Saturday night. Blue valentine and small change were also fantastic. It’s all good in my opinion but I can see how people wouldn’t be into it.
Grateful to have seen Tom Waits many times in early 70’s at Richard Harding’s club, The Quiet Knight, on Wells in Chicago and another terrific club, Harry Hopes, west of Chicago, in Cary Illinois. @@MrDougpro He hasn't released a new album since 2011. I wish he'd record something new!! He is INCREDIBLE!! But he was great in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, released last yr on Netflix. He's also in the new Jarmusch film.
Can we take a moment and appreciate that Tom Waits never stopped making music even as he was getting older. The fact that he never dropped off and stayed true to himself and his style is absolutely amazing. There never was nor will there be another Tom Waits! Even if you wanted to, you could try to be like him but that wouldn't work, you could try and be "inspired" by him and that wouldn't work either lol. You would have to do your own thing that doesn't sound anything like Tom Waits and then... maybe then, you might channel Tom Waits's energy.
That was actually sort of emotional, seeing the whole journey. And then for Tom to end with "Take One Last Look at the Place That You Are Leaving." 😭 Getting old sucks. But it's also beautiful. I think Lettermen always liked Tom's unusual wild style. You can tell there's a very genuine fondness there.

or for the last time, we share this moment together and I am grateful for this
Holly sh!t, I fell upon this gem at midnight. This will be a night well spent! I grew up on his music, but I never saw these images. Thank you so much for posting this!
Love Tom Waits! Sometimes he sing just like Marlene Dietrich 🖤
Tom Waits can increase your intellect.
Tom is a sharp tack in a loose package.
kick ass collection of Tom Waits... A one of a kind!
For those who get Tom Waits no explanation is necessary. For those who don’t get Waits no explanation is possible. I know what side of the tracks I’m on…
I'm right in the middle of this compilation and I must thank you for this generous treat. BIG THANKS
Two American classics Waits & Letterman never to be copied. Thanks for this trip down memory lane, cheers
The man had a face that was almost impossible to climb but BOY ! the view from the top was worth it.
Great comment dude.
What kind of a person would give a thumbs down for this? And thank you Don!
don't sweat it, I have it on reliable evidence that those thumbs, besides being imaginary, have zero baring on reality (such as it is)
TH-cam auto adds dislikes to every few likes. Stupid but they do. Also they add likes to trending videos so you really can't go by that on anything that gets traffic.
@@kvonkirk2340 lol wat
A person who trapped his or her thumb in the door and is taking it out on the world of musical greats ...and it gives them a break from being stuck up their arse all day Amin ...all the best now..
@@kvonkirk2340 Wow I did not know that. Do you know the reasoning behind it as well as the source? Just curious. I will say too that some phones are more sensitive than others so I am sure there are times that people click thumbs up, thumbs down, like, etc. accidentally. Many times when I read comments a box will come up for me to type a comment or reply when I had no intention to do so. Do you know of any other platforms that automatically place remarks?
Absolutely tremendous, Tom is artistic genius personified.
This guy! He's a national treasure... Spread the news!
Love Tom Waits, he tells it like it is, and a good interviewer. He’s very entertaining.
Nicely done! So interesting to watch the chronology unfold. Tom Waits is a total original.
Yes,he had his unique style...Hes funny and cool! Whatever happened to him? I dont hear much about him anymore
@@MrDougpro He mostly acts these. Three films in the last couple of years.
@@pearlynx Hes a VERY talented man! Whats he doin these days? I havent heard much about him recently
@@MrDougpro He hasn't released a new album since 2011. I wish he'd record something new!! He is INCREDIBLE!! But he was great in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, released last yr on Netflix. He's also in the new Jarmusch film.
"attempting to cook my dinner on your stove"
everyone else can just stop trying
Got to see him live once in Eugene, OR. Was super sick and still the best show I’ve ever seen!!!!!!!
Tom is truly one of a kind. Love that man. Hope he releases another album.
Tom has such a sense of humor. I have 28 Tom Waits CDs and never knew that!
Thanks for this compilation.
Glorious. Thank you for assembling this.
Yes and on the Nickle is one of my many favorite Waits songs
