Seeing this on TV back in the day was a pivotal moment for me. There are certain moments that change you and your perception of the world. Thank you Tom and Co. to show us there is more than Top 40 music out there.
I saw this broadcast when I was 12 years old and didn't catch the name of the singer and didn't know who he was for almost ten years and it completely blew my mind and the lyric and song stuck in my head all those years from this one broadcast before I discovered what it was a heard it again. This appearance and performance to a 12 year old immersed in 80s pop music was psychedelic, like nothing else I saw watching MTV and VH1 and Letterman listening to Casey Kasem every week but I knew it was genius somehow.
In 95, I was pushing plates at at lunchtime LA spot Flora Kitchen that was popular with actors and actresses. Most were regulars and left egos and attitudes outside. I. had the same section every day with 10 tables inside plus the patio in back. When asked who was the nicest I've always said Brendan Fraser who would grab a water pitcher and fill glasses in my section just to be neighborly. Jodie Foster came in weekly and never looked at the menu for whatever I brought was always good. Her only comment was how hungry she was or if she wanted something to bring home for later. like the night before the Oscars cause she wouldn't get a chance to eat making the rounds. She hilariously described the shitty but pretty plates that no one ate out of fear for gaining an ounce. I digress, Brendan was the nicest, Yasmine the sexiest, Spade the best to fuck with (I'd bring him a high chair) Christopher Lloyd the quietest, Brad was the rudest and most improved,o Tom Waits came in every day like it was the first time " wow, thus place is cool" and the loudest while being super sweet, Fra
I get what you are saying, but please put this video in the context of time. This is from (I believe) 1987. A lot of people were just getting a VCR for the first time. Some may have recorded with a camcorder straight from their seat. That was the world back then. For me, that performance was such a crystalline moment, I'm happy that somebody found a way to record this moment in time. : )
I sure do miss my friend David who introduced me to this album way back in 1988. He went full libtard and disowned me over Trump. NPR, trans kid, etc. Full compliance. What a letdown.
