I learned of this man when I was a hippie. The music would transform you without using any drugs.

The first sitar player that I know of.

This isnt his only sitar, only one of them. It's really beautiful. "At the level of a Stradivarius" - Anoushka.
    Also, a beautiful video.

A perfect place for one of the sitars of the Great Legend. Beautiful presentation. Surely, all must know that the real sitar continues to be played, for more music for the world. Yes, the energy and the source behind those fingers can not be matched by anyone currently living.

Beautiful, in honour of his passing, that had recently added one more year. What a special presentation!

This video is such a nice tribute to one of the best musicians. I liked that you mentioned his intensely deep-rooted tradition. He leaves behind a large number of utter masterpieces. I would make a trip to London just to be in the same room as this instrument.

It is truely a great matter of pride for us who love Pandit Ravi Shankar as mad, are most obsessed about him, to know that Pandit Ji's sitar is being kept in British Museum. Art & artistes are truly being acknowledged only by the genuine connoisseurs. It is extremely sad when the thought comes to mind that even though Pandit Ji is BharatRatna, neither central administration, nor even the state administration has ever thought anything to properly acknowledge Pandit Ji's contribution. Instead, we are remaining indifferent and many of us are engaged in infighting to hail the sitarist of one's personal choice over Pandit Ji. Funny indeed. We can hardly come across a multifaceted musician like Ravi ji in an epoch.

I was about to ask The Beatles question and it got answered by itself through the narration… Very warm, sweet and romantic melodies of India! Brining many recollections of my trip to this very exciting, marvelous, often unpredictable Land…

Thanks very much for posting this.
Just a minor correction - the implication of John Blurton's remark (at 1.42) that Panditji was "engaged with...The Beatles" unfortunately reifies an inaccuracy.
To be clear, Ravi Shankar never played with The Beatles (although he and George are on various recordings together, post-Beatles break up). I came to Hindustani Classical Music as a result of The Beatles' experimentation with variations of the form, but we should be clear what we are talking about here (and, in fact, George played sitar on 'Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)' before even meeting Ravi Shankar).

Much respect for the Greatest sitar player that ever lived. The man that introduced the sitar to the west. After I heard Brian Johns play a sitar on “ Paint it black “ , I had to learn sitar.

He had more sitars, and I believe Ravi Shankar's legacy should be spread. It doesn't belong to England for sure but deserves to be seen by the world. The great man popularised a great deal of Indian music in the western world, so he's not just India's but a worldly treasure.

Anoushka is British and she wants it to be in London. It's safer and more appreciated there, and anyone is permitted to see since the museum is free to enter.

India was for most of Ravi's life a part of the British Empire. Anoushka is married and living in England. I can't help but feel the British Museum is where the family would like it to be.

It should indeed have been preserved in a Museum in India, where it truly belongs. There are many good museums India. It is a matter of great disappointment and indeed shame that it was decided to preserve the sitar in UK.

Your feeling or the family's feeling is hardly what Ravi Shankar would've wanted. His love for India and sincere respect to the classical musical education that India has, most importantly the respect he had for his Guru is unparalleled. His Guru always said that India is the land where they truly understand music like nobody else has and never would.
No hard feelings! Cheers and have a good one, mate! :p

Why is his Sitar with the British museum ? This should have been given to any museum in India. Tne last time I checked , Ravi Shankar was an Indian national who played Indian classical music , and has a huge fan following in INDIA. No one knows him or appreciates INDIAN classical music in Britain, other than a few people of Indian descent. Does Nigel Farage approve of this immigrant sitar?

His daughter should have the instrument. It’s just going to rot in that glass box. It’s part of her family n the British just stole it from them to show it in a museum where honestly nobody will give a shit about it.

    • @rsitarsi4804

Dear Kenneth, I believe Raviji 's daughter is, in fact, British by birth, born in London. All but one other of Raviji 's Nodu Mullick sitars were destroyed in airline transit accidents, so possibly his daughter feels a museum is a safer repository for this unique artifact, rather than her using it and also risking it's destruction in transit. I believe she is playing a Hiren Roy sitar instead, which can be replaced, as Hiren 's son, Barun Ray, is still making fine instruments. Where and how Ravi Shankar's wife and daughter choose to display his sitar is surely their decision alone?

Ravi Shankar: Third greatest sitar player of the 20th century: Nikhil Banerjee, Vilayat Khan, Ravi Shankar in that order. Most people who know this music does not have to learn it from the Briitsh Museum.

    • @rsitarsi4804
      @rsitarsi4804 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Surely, these musicians all played in a totally different manner. Viilayat Khan style shared almost no similar technique with Raviji...... Type of sitar, tuning, fingering, all different. And Nikhil Banerjee drew on both of these styles to create something different again. I do feel it is fatuous to make such comparisons?
