My Dad first introduced me to this music 60 years ago. And now I sit choosing music for his funeral and thought of Ravi Shankar. I feel very fortunate to have had a father of such broad tastes who valued other cultures and their music. I went to see Ravi Shankar at the South Bank many years ago. What a treat!

Ecodiver. My father was in the British Army stationed in Shimla for many years and as a young boy I would sit on his lap and listen to the Sitar records. He is no more as he passed away when I was 10 that was 62 years ago, but now Ravi brings the beauty of India back to me. Bless you Ravi.

On three different occasions, and in three different decades, when Ravi performed concerts in Wellington , New Zealand, my father urged me to attend and even said he would pay for my ticket. But each time I would turn him down. I thought the music was beneath me and not as cool as Western music. Many years have passed. Now I love this music. Now I am sad that I will never get to see the great maestro perform. He is gone from this world. My Dad, however, is still here, but he is now near ninety and is completely deaf. What a fool I was to disappoint myself and of course my Dad, by being so big-headed and closed-minded.

So hard to believe that this Ravi Shankar would later join Mumbai's underworld. Nicknamed 'Rajju Bhaiyya' by the good Don 'Haji Mastan' Ravi Shankar made his name in extortion, kidnapping, bottle leggings, illegal gambling, and managing prostitution dens in 60's and 70's. 'Rajju Bhaiyya' will always be remembered for brokering peace between the Pathans and Dawud bhai's gang which would go onto consolidate Haji Mastan's power.

Just listen his parameshwari raga or manj khamaj with ali akbar khan. They start improvisation where our creativity ends. That is the real beauty of Ravi Shankar. Here, not only are melodic contours known and appreciated by the Hindoos, but also an absolutely new harmonic material, which brings us prisms, clusters of chords, thick chimes, and garlands of garlands. What strikes first of all in this music is, on the one hand, the penetrating charm of harmonic aggregations and, on the other hand, the absolute clarity of intervals !

This Tabla player is of Baranas? what a difficult taal. This player makes the drums alive like Pandit Kishan Maharaj but in a much different way. Whereas Maharaj literally brings the syllables of the godhead and all the forms to life through the drum, the rhythm becomes immaterial. This player instead makes the gods sing from the perfection of rhythm. Pranam.

    Rasia by Panditji.
My first encounter was in 1970. It was a 78 RPM lac record featuring Ahir Lalit on the other side of the disc. Each of 3 min approx. Such melidious compopositions of his own ragas...that to with such perfection! He is one and only one. Beyond any comparison.
    Regards.

I was hunting for this piece. Then a few years back, I found it here. I have heard this Rasiya maybe tens of times. I used to own this cassette previously but I lost it. Then I did not know the Raag as Rasiya, as a result, I could not locate this piece. Then I found it accidentally. Thanks. An outstanding rendition.

Rasiya means "Bhanvra", the honey suckling insect. I believe this is Panditji's own composition because I never heard any vocalist nor instrumentalist ever play it. In the initial part, one can actually sense the happy roaming of the Bhanwra in a flowering garden, to get the choicest honey and in drut part, one can sense that the Bhanwra, having drunk honey to it's own contentment, simply roams from flower to flower, singing merrily. This composition is exclusive in its cheerful tone.

Rag Rashia is not concerned with bhromar. Rag Rashia has nothing to do with honey.
