Natural Edge Cigar Ashtray Design

- I just got finished with a new cigar ashtray design and I thought I would make a video showing how I made it. This design had a couple firsts for me. It was my first project working with elm, my first natural edge cigar ashtray and also my first attempt making deeper grooves for the cigar rests. I was really pleased with the finished product. Having a deeper and wider cigar rest compared to my previous designs really allows for a better fit for a wider variety of cigars. I have to say this was a fun woodworking project and it would be the perfect gift for someone who enjoys cigars with friends. This is by no means the only way to make a natural edge ashtray, just the way I chose to with the tools/experience available to me. Feel free to adjust to your own building style.

I use Tung Oil on mine and then I use cutting board wax to seal it. I am going to try Odies oil on my next one once I get it from Amazon.
Thank you for sharing! I love hearing different finishing techniques. Im going to have to try the tung oil/wax combo to see how I like it. I also want to try the Odies oil at some point. Each time I go to the sawmill, it's on the shelf saying, 'Buy me, buy me!' 🤣

How can you tell if your wood is dry enough to start the project? Or I guess how long should I let it sit or dry it?
I picked up the wood from a local sawmill that kiln-dries their wood, so it was already dry enough to use (though I still used a moisture meter to be safe). Depending on your circumstances, it may take quite a while before a piece this thick is ready to use. I'm looking to source my own wood later this year to have some stock when the sawmill doesn't have any pieces that suit my needs. I think it will be a nice learning experience as well.
Where do you find slabs like that?
I found these at my local sawmill. They have a small shelf where they have multiple sizes of these cookies.
What size is the diameter
The diameter of the piece varies a bit because of the shape. The diameter is 9-1/4 inches on the shortest measurement and 10-1/4 inches on the longest measurement. I also just finished a walnut variation with a diameter that measured 11 inches at the widest part. I hope this helps!
