Addressing a Safety Concern
I had someone bring to my attention a safety concern they had with the hybrid mortar rack/cake platform from my Memorial Day video. The safety concern, as I understand it, was that the way the rack is positioned perpendicular to the audience, that should one of the wooden rails fail in the event of an explosion inside the tube, the remaining tubes could then spill out towards or away from the audience and be dangerous.
I guess it's my fault for just showing the design and not communicating how I was going to use it. I can understand the concern if I was going to be fusing this, but my original idea for the rack in the back was to light one or two shells at a time when testing product or the warm up to a show. I could have probably left this with an explanation and been fine, but I wanted to test the strength of this style design with the 2x4 wood rails to better understand for myself.
The first tests I performed were lower tube explosions. Both of the test racks I built faired well in these tests, the only damage being to the tube containing the shell and the tubes adjacent to it. I don't think there was much force transferred to the rails in these tests because the explosions happened in that open space in between the rails. Those results made me want to do a secondary test in which I pushed the limits of both designs I made and try to create what I would consider a worst-case scenario: a shell going off directly on the top row on the very last tube, transferring a lot of the force from the explosion to those top rails. I expected to see some damage, but I didn't expect to see the rails getting blown off. I don't think I would have gotten different result from using a slightly longer screw, but I think I may have gotten a different result from using a longer bolt where I didn't have to remove any material from the 2x4 rail.
I would like to end things by saying I'm not a pyrotechnics expert, and these tests are not intended to instruct people how they should build their racks. I just wanted to test this out so that I could try and have a better understanding for myself moving forward. I also want to say I appreciate safety concerns made in good faith. Safety is crucial when dealing with fireworks.
*Due to the dangerous nature of these tests I strongly discourage anyone from trying to recreate them.

Adjustable Barrage Candle Stand
มุมมอง 35228 วันที่ผ่านมา
I made a simple A-frame style stand that would hold two barrage roman candles as a proof-of-concept design. With this test, I wanted to see whether or not I liked the adjustable feature. I really like the A-frame style legs for their stability on uneven surfaces. I appreciate the simplicity of the single bolt on each side for adjusting the angle of this stand. When the sides are tightened, the ...
Spinning Roman Candle Stand

I wanted test out an idea I had for spinning roman candles. I made a wooden stand from plywood that would hold 28 of the smaller size roman candles. Then I placed it on an automatic turntable that spins slowly, so that as the roman candles are going off they aren't just shooting in one direction but rather 360°. Because the turntable I have spins pretty slow I chose to fuse these roman candles ...

    It’s a good design and using 1-1/2 inch material is more than sufficient. Most racks use one by that is really 3/4 inch or plywood. I know you are testing and putting the shells upside down but your designs are great.

    • @310fabrication

      If the stand I have won't go much faster, then I might make a modified base with a drill attachment before I try looking for a new one. The single rack was more of the effect I was wanting, but I think a double rack has the potential to look just as good, if not better. That's a solid idea 👍

    Sorry i am big on firework safety i dont want fireworks to get banned again. I like that you all have water handy just in case of fire and to wet down hot hot fireworks when done. first of all According to most firework laws, fireworks must be used in the intended manner/purpose of manufacturer and seller. lighting any firework and holding it in your hand is not intended use/Misuse (especially roman candle gun). technically illegal. if seller knew you were using it illegally they should not sell to you. Although most sellers dont care. Also rockets can be risky to use, maybe you have enough land for that, but maybe not a good idea in urban areas. The whole rocket comes back down and can be a fire hazard and its a mess to clean up. Although rocket show did look cool, it is a risk. a remote control system is even safer. Cool roman candle stand/ rack not gun.

    • @310fabrication
      @310fabrication หลายเดือนก่อน

      I appreciate the safety concerns. I try to take safety into consideration first before doing anything. I know people probably don't care for the roman candle holder for the same safety reasons you expressed. I am familiar with the potential for what could happen from the results of a video I have on the channel, that's why I don't recommend people do it. In the worst-case scenario of a blowout or chain reaction, I believe being one step removed from actually hand-holding it would provide the necessary time to throw the holder down, but I could be wrong. Regarding the concern with the rockets, I agree urban areas are maybe not a good idea. However, I think the land we have is adequate. Since the rockets were held at a 90° angle before launch and the wind was minimal, most of the sticks stayed at the launch site. Had there been more wind, I would have waited.
