  • What makes the DC Animated Universe (known among its fans as the DCAU) so special? Why do the adventures of Batman the Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Superman the Animated Series, Static Shock and more capture the hearts and minds of audiences of all ages? One show being a hit would make sense, but almost all of them being unanimously loved? That accomplishment is often unheard of when it comes to shared universes. On today's episode of "What Makes It Special," we're going to be diving headfirst into the heart and soul of the DCAU. So whether your favorite character is Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Static, Batman Beyond, Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter, John Stewart's Green Lantern, the Wally West Flash, Huntress, the Question or another member of this masterpiece of a universe, you're sure to enjoy the ride. #batman #justiceleague #dcau

For me personally, I think the fact that the producers, writers etc. very clearly cared about the source material really helped the shows shine. The shows seem like a lot of care and passion went into their production.

The DCAU has some of the best, and I cannot stress this enough, Family story telling I've ever seen. It in no way excludes little kids, but you've got Joker torturing Tim Drake, lots of sexual innuendo and visuals, and well-done psychology.
A great example is Batman Beyond's animal dna splicing, the steroid patches, and Spellbinder's VR tech that he sells to the teens like a drug. All layered and fair explorations of how the youth get ignored, and develop bad habits because of their problems. At the same time they wove in the sci-fi adventure perfectly, with the fantastice alterations of modern problems.
Snobbing that stuff out is exaclty what you'd see with a lot of self-loathing adventure fiction that wants to feel smart and important, like character designs representing a self-actualized entity with no sartorial restrictions, making idealogical battles also physical ones are somehow lowbrow ideas.
The cadmus arc of JLU is easily the greatest take on Superheroes + politics I've ever seen. Build up, layered characters, fair arguments for every side, and characters are allowed to be placed somewhere politically without it ever looking inherentely good or bad. It may currently be the most relevant superhero story that's ever been done. Question gets to say "A is A" (an explicit reference to Objectivism) and Green Arrow says "I'm an old lefty." This is not what happens when you write for kids. This is what happens when you just write, and do so with taste and maturity.
I don't think I need to mention how the arc used plotpoints from all over the series, retroactively making a buildup that went back to 1992, and used the differences of their characters like Superman, Captain Atom, Question, Lex Luthor etc, very well. Basically, it's easily some of the best superhero fiction ever made.

I think what makes the dcau so special and is that it just had the perfect mix of fun and serialization. This universe manages to take full advantg and of the ridiculous world of comic books but was able to naturally build on the comics to create relatable characters and build up on concepts seamlessly. This universe is iconic and deserves so much more love because I wouldn’t be a writer without it

I think the DCAU's Flash deserves his own series. Something in line with the JLU episode "Flash and Substance", showing how superheroes aren't just about violence and punishment, but also about protecting the innocent and trying to rehabilitate the villains. The way Flash "catches" Trickster in that episode was one of the absolute high points in the Justice League series for me, and I'd love to see a series, or maybe just a series of shorts, dedicated to showing more of that.

And I always wanted to get more into this universe, but never really had the opportunity to. I would see Mask of the Phantasm on TV sometimes or Sub Zero, sometimes Mystery of the Batwoman, but that was pretty much all of my experiences with this universe as a child. So I was introduced to the DCAU through reruns of Batman Beyond and then the Justice League series and Static Shock. As I was so young when these were airing, I didn't actually realise they were connected until much later, when I learned that there was also a BTAS and STAS (they came out before I was born). That being said, even as a six-year-old, there was something that drew me to the shows and kept me engaged. I think maybe it was the serious tone they may have had, and the emotion they managed to employ? On top of that there were mysterious and adventures, it was all super easy to get drawn into.

Slightly on/off topic. I recently bought the "X-Men: The Art and Making of the Animated Series" book. In it, the authors who wrote some of the show talk about how X-Men broke all these records and helped Fox go from this distant fourth who could never beat the Big 3 networks to having the highest ratings on Saturday mornings to the point where half of America's televisions were watching X-Men. The authors talked about how Batman: TAS had 18 months of prep time before the first airing and X-Men had half that. The makers of the show told Saban (apparently a cheapskate) that they needed B:TAS money put into it. No one shrugged at the idea of putting money into Batman because he had just had two major films come out in the last two years. Now, I never watched X-Men nearly as religiously as I watched Batman and Spider-Man, but when I hear about all this praise for X-Men (which I think is good too), one thing I can never agree with is the idea of it being the best superhero animated show ever. That's Batman. X-Men never invented a character for the show that would go on to be as big as Harley, who Jim Lee called "DC's fourth pillar". X-Men never had the voice actors come back for many projects the way that DCAU (and B:TAS) voice actors have over the years. X-Men never had animated movies that continued the continuity in the way some DC animated movies have. The DCAU and Batman in particular, are truly the GOAT in superhero animation and the blueprint for all. I'm glad we got X-Men, and Spider-Man (which I LOVED), but (IMO) it's small potatoes to the DCAU!

“I’ve got Batman in my Basement” is not a bad episode. It’s just one of those stories almost exclusively geared towards children.
I remember seeing it as a child. The main kid was a closer POV character than Robin could ever be… A nerdy kid, dealing with bullies, obsessed with Batman, with no magical powers, or training to beat up adults twice their size.

Good question, I think it’s because not only did the shows help a TON in character development, the way the writers took on the story was one of the best ways possible
And they explored the DC universe here in the dcau in a few different ways, with the origins, justice league, the future, the teens, the villains, the non-humans, the lesser known dc characters, and the way they told us the story of superman in his show made me love him, back when I was not really a supes fan
And it actually told me what happened to make Dick nightwing lol
And of course not to mention the incredible animation style that is one of the best styles ever, imo
Also the fact that the DCAU show’s filler episodes are actually worth my time, unlike most other shows

I believe some of the confusion as to whether or not Teen Titans was apart of the DCAU comes from the casting choices for Speedy & Kid Flash. Speedy was voiced by Mike Erwin who then reprised the role for the JLU episode "Patriot Act". Michael Rosenbaum was cast as Kid Flash who at the time was also voicing Flash in Justice League/JLU possibly leading to some belief that they were connected as the depicted alter-ego of each character was Wally West.

Also just look at the order of things they did. They started off just making a Batman series that stands on it’s own and then before they can move on to another show they were offered Superman and then they did that which was the opposite of BTAS and then they did another season of Batman while doing Superman and then Batman Beyond was created out of a ridiculous futuristic Batman toy pitch meeting from WB and they turned that into gold. And then Justice League and Static Shock happened without any rush in the world. They just took their time and created an evolving vision. Not a clear one like the MCU or the DCEU. And evolving one. That chance of discovery.

I just stumbled on this video, doing a dirty 'dcau' search. Youre so right about the emotional content of the DCAU. Ace's death? baby-Doll? Joker's torture of Robin? 'I wasnt supposed to be happy' from Mask of the phantasm? So many emotional moments throughout the DCAU. I once grabbed my 19 yr old daughter, and showed her the Ace's death clip. She started bawling like a baby.
The DCAU had the best versions of these DC chars outside of the comics. Hands down. Which is why the live action movies have been so depressing. They have this template to work with, and we get thos awful movies. bah.

But at the same time I relaized that even as a kid, I got some of the adult oriented jokes and puns... weird thing. In any case, this universe made me appreciate the "B" team's far more than I would ever have in general. People like Question, The Huntress, Fire, Ice, Livewire etc... they rarely get enough time to shine in the comics or any other media for that matter. Especially not the Original Question. I dig Renee as the Question but Vic was the first and still is the best. And the relationships... don't get me started on those. I knew Green Arrow and Black Canary for instance... yeah, still is one of the best pairings even in comic book lore, let alone in the DCAU.

I still watch it with my dad all the time, and one of the things I think you say that really stuck out to me was “less is more” I always wanted this universe to be “adultified” and there be tons of gore but it doesn’t need that. I just think it needs more death (in terms of them showing death or at least having death being a crucial factor, something I feel that is missing from the universe) and a bit more advanced dialogue and it’s perfect.
