Although after doing some research the helmet used by the majority of the grid (Bell HP7 and similar variants) only describes the protection technology they use as “Advanced multi-density, multi-piece liner to maximize energy absorption and impact performance” which is something just about every helmet says. Most sources say it’s just various density EPS foam. The reason they lack some of the newer advanced technology is probably because the main things the FIA looks for are that it must resist a 225g metal projectile fired at 250km/h and be able to withstand 800°C flame for 45 seconds. Also since the driver is protected by the halo they don’t expect the drivers head to impact the ground or anything similar. They’re great helmets for they’re specific purpose but outside of F1 in sports like MotoGP, Supercross, and skiing they wouldn’t be the best option in terms of protection. Stuff like MIPS is huge for rotational impacts and is one of the first things you check for when buying a helmet. Most helmets are designed specifically to reduce brain injuries from direct impacts where as F1 helmets focus stuff like protection from fire and high speed projectiles.
EPS foam is old tech more commonly used in cheaper helmets. EPP (expanded polypropylene) however is far superior because it can withstand multiple impacts in the same direction without crushing and deforming.
