    Stand21 has been saving lives since 1970, bringing safety equipment to Formula 1, with race boots, overalls, gloves, helmets and FHR devices (Also known has HANS Devices). I speak with Romain Morizot about how Frontal Head Restraints came to F1, and how they're produced.

    I would love to see more research about how the driver''s brains behave during crashes. Concussion rates seem to be relatively low for big impacts. For example, Ocon had a huge crash in Miami and was driving the next day. I wonder how that is possible.

    • @durrell246
      @durrell246 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      The lack of head movement for sure helps. The less violent movement of the brain relative to the rest of their head, and the restriction in movement stops the driver from having an impact with the wheel or the headrest.

      @notscaredboochie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@durrell246 Good points. But I am still interested as to how side impacts don't often cause concussions and by putting harsh accelerations on the brain. There is much less space for the driver's head to travel in the cockpit during a side impact, and the FHR/HANS seems to be most effective in frontal collisions.

    • @Stand21Racewear
      @Stand21Racewear 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The foam around the cockpit limits the movement of the head laterally and the FHR limits them ahead but the absorption quality of the helmet liner has also a very big importance as it avoids the brain to have too brutal movements inside the skull (and the standards are more difficult to pass because of this invisible part than because of the shell strenght). Dr. Olvey is a specialist in concussions for motorsport and you can find a video and other videos purely focused on motorsport safety in the TH-cam channel of the "Racing Goes Safer" foundation : th-cam.com/video/sITNlmEYp1U/w-d-xo.html

      @@notscaredboochie The side movement is also restricted through the headrest in open wheelers or the seat in other race cars. The headrest is also made from an impact absorbing foam designed to deform when the helmet hits it. You could see that in Mick Schumachers crash in Saudi Arabia this year.

      Concussions are so wack. You hear stories of how some people could legit get 1 and it fucks them up forever and then we have nfl players getting them damn near once a year.

    Excellent video. Stand21 is not as well known by F1 fans because they do not sponsor any drivers and instead focus on creating top quality rather than marketing. As such the FHR's you see F1 guys using are indeed purchased and not sponsored like their other race kit is. This goes right back to Senna who preferred Stand21 but was paid by OMP to use their stuff.

    Now that you mention Mr. Morizot litting himself on fire, reminds me of Bill Simpson doing the same thing during the 70s at Indianapolis, litting himself on fire to promote his own suits, and it's pretty much thanks to him that all racing drivers are safe from fire.

    Regarding head restraints, I've seen Rally drivers and many touring car racers now use a different kind of head restraint (hybrid systems I believe they are called, manufactured by Simpson y believe). What are the differences with a typical HANS device? As far as I can tell both do the same head restrain job, so maybe it's down to driver preference the use of hybrid or Hans

    How long or how many races is the HANS device rated for? Because of the movement and tension they are put under (overtime) does it weaken the carbon fibre?

    Very sad that the HANS device was already available in the 80's, but it took until the 2000's for racing organization to FORCE people into using it by making it mandatory. So many, many lives were lost to basial skull fractures, so many lives could have been saved.
    On a different note, why are you showing yourself talking, when instead you can use that time to show the THING you are talking about ? Or the person instead ?

    What a dumb title. Of course drivers can race without HANS. They've raced without it for decades. They are not ALLOWED to race without it. And that's due to safety reasons.
