We purchased 14 of these reels for our our two apartment buildings, most have been used at least 3 times per week for the last 4 months. Of the 14 reels:
    * 1 reel - The internal winding spring disconnected after one week, making it useless.
    * 1 reel - The reciprocating hose feeding mechanism failed. It winds up, but builds up in the middle, the last few feet of the hose won't feed in.
    * 5 reels - Feels and sound unbalanced while being retracted, loud and not smooth at all. I've pulled them all the way out and carefully fed them back in, it did not fix the problem.
    * 7 reels - Have worked well with no problems.
The hoses themselves are of medium quality, they will kink if mishandled, one lead hose did bust in the middle but not from movement, there most likely was a flaw in the hose. They're not made with a supple, high quality rubber, is has more of a plastic feel, they will retain memory where something is mounted to them, like the hose stop that you demonstrated.
I did take one of them apart (money was refunded and they didn't want it shipped back), there is a flow restriction between where the water is fed into the spindle, to where it attached to main hose, I'm making a guesstimate that it loses about 8 to 10% of its 5/8" diameter potential, so pressure is slightly less than a 5/8" hose straight to a spigot.
Why did we buy 14 of them? We bought two first and tested them out last summer, no problems at all, so we purchased 12 this last spring, one for each spigot on the buildings.
Pros - A pleasure to use, you don't mind taking the hose out for anything, you will more inclined to water the grass, garden, spray the patio, wash the car, etc.
You stay clean, the hose stays clean, no need to manually keep looping the hose over a wall mounted hanger or using a tiring and dirty hand winding box type reel.
Other people that use it don't leave the hose laying on the ground in a mess.
Easy to dismount from the wall for winter.
Cons - Reliability issues, it remains to be seen how many years they will hold up. The bad ones showed problems early on, an indication of a quality control problem.
Hose durability still a question, if you need to repair it, I doubt the repaired spliced section would feed back in (or out) of the reel without problems.
A slight loss of pressure for the hose diameter size. I think most people wouldn't even notice it.
Would I buy them again? Ask me in about 5 years.

Your hose guide isn’t moving side to side when you feel in/out the hose? I have not encountered that issue so, off the top of my head, I’m not sure how to fix this. Have you contacted Giraffe about a warranty replacement? Curious what they might say.
