I absolutely adored this game. I’ve played it a few times. It was actually the game that I saw and thought “yep. I need to buy a PS4.” Totally gorgeous, I was born in 1995 and it reminded me of visiting my granny down in Shaftesbury. I also bought this soundtrack on vinyl shortly after playing.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who related this to real life family. I adore this game due to going on long walks with an uncle when I was a kid (long story short: as he didn’t live too far from the countryside). It was great times.

We need to come up with a new genre name for a games like these (how about "novel games" or "short story games"?). I can't even put into words how this game affected me, and how it still does. It is absolutely stunning with all the story, graphics and especially the music. I spent hours adoring all the details and beauty of Yaughton, playing it over and over again and I can't understand why a piece of art like this didn't get more popular, is it still ahead of it's time so much? I don't know. But I wanted more games like these and there are none these days. That's why I decided to return back to game development myself after a pause of almost 10 years, just to do my part on reviving these types of gaming experiences. If you can't find them, make them I think.
I want more games in the world that move people emotionally as this game moved me, I don't care about the profits as long as there is an audience.

Yes! That's fantastic. I had a similar reaction. I really want to get into game development or at least a game tester situation so I can support games like this being developed. If you ever get to a point you need people to test out your game let me know!

I see nothing wrong with "Walking simulator". Some people use this as a negative thing, I just adopted it happily for everything narrative driven in a first person environment, whenever the gameplay mechanics do not include shooting.

I got this when it was on PSN Plus, at the time, my ex girlfriend who is disabled, loved anything story based. I suggested she got it too. She and I absolutely loved it. We shed tears over some of the characters "disappearances" and the score is absolutely beautiful, moving and deep. The graphics are fantastic. It was the first and only game, I actually replayed again to get all the trophies which got my first and only platinum. I contacted the developers, saying how moved I was with EGTTR, got a very short thanks message back. But still, sure it's no quick paced game, it's not a kill frenzy, but it is a true capture of what life would be like after an apocalyptic event. I have now got it on my PC and replay it from time to time. I love exploring every tiny nook and cranny of the villages and you can play with a toy train set further on (gets a trophy). Quality review of a totally underestimated game.

  • @merryberryjam
    @merryberryjam 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Even 6 years later it's still a fantastic piece of art and storytelling. I just recently discovered the game and have spent endless hours exploring. I still get emotional watching different scenes and I am still crying at the end even though I've seen it several times now. It's just so beautiful. It's my favorite game of 2021 and I am so glad I took a chance playing it. I had no idea what I was in for! I got CHILLS and goosebumps! The music is stunning and the sound design is really creep and scary. For a game without any real monsters it really does a good job of putting you on edge. I played it so much that I'm at a 100% with all the trophies. It's been an adventure. If you haven't given it a chance yet, please do! Just make sure you can take your time and enjoy the scenery. :)

I discovered this game in 2018 and fell in love with it. Playing it again in 2020 gave it a whole different feel and experience for sure. Jeremy especially with his dialogue gives this pandemic reality we are all in now a particular skewer to the heart. Covid has breathed new life into this game and a deeper appreciation of Rapture. IMHO of course. Stay Safe everyone! 💗

lol the irony in this comment when they explain in the game that it wasn't a serious flu and the village were forced to quarantine under a false pretense.

The detail in the game is crazy. So good that when I first played it and saw those tall white flowers I could literally SMELL them and how they STINK :D The Commodore 64 computers gave me so much nostalgia too, having been my first proper computer back in the late 80s. Such a fantastic game. People still discuss and theorise who or what you played as. Don't want to say more, as I don't want to spoil it for anyone who does give it a go but cannot recommend it highly enough.

Well said, it's not only the fact that it blurs the line between video game and narrative experience like you said, or that the voice acting is top notch, or that the story keeps you so captivated. But it probably hits differently if you're from the UK. I can't really believe i have to say this in 2022 but it's the only game i've ever played that felt authentically British, whereas usually the standard is British but through the lens of an American's perspective.
I think any British person would find it hard not to be nostalgic or at least sentimental in one way or another playing through it. I've spoken to people before that have said it brought back memories of holidays when they were kids or that it just hit them a certain way because of the environment that you get to explore. There's just so many small details and Britishisms, that's a rarity in itself with video games and it's almost criminal. It's fresh in a different way compared to the usual sci-fi or fantasy that's completely set in it's own world that UK based developers seem to usually make. And there's some great games being made by UK based developers, but there's so many untouched genres that we could see based in Britain, that actually feel British. We should be proud of our country and inject that into the games being made more often! We do it with film all the time, so why not video games? Take a look at the vast amounts of genres being made in the US, where you can confidently say that it feels like an American game, now compare that to the UK, it speaks for itself.
I'd love to see a Folk Horror game set in a sleepy village in the vein of The Wickerman or Blood on Satan's Claw for example. I feel like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture has a bit of that which is why i bring it up, and you can see where The Chinese Room could have expanded on that into horror, it does already have bit of Cosmic Horror i'd say. TCR should be an example to other UK based developers, i hope it's started something and i hope they as developers continue with this in future games.
This is why i think Dreams on PS4 (and now PS5) has real potential. It's a community based platform where you can create your own games. It's free rein, so i've seen all sorts from a Goofy and Teletubbies based horror, to the recreation of Twin Peaks sets, to fully developed original games in progress with their own foundations. I recently came across a creator that's making games based in Birmingham (my home), he developed a Cyberpunk type game set in a residential area in Birmingham and right now he's developing the whole area of Digbeth. When the freedom is given to the audience, the possibilities are prerry much endless, so that's also something to keep an eye on. We could really do with a BFI equivalent or something for video games.

The doctors surgery really struck me as well, I also grew up in the 80s in England and I've never seen anywhere in a computer game captured as faithfully as that doctors surgery, the 'feel' of it is absolutely spot on. Looking back at Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is almost like memories of actually visiting somewhere called Yaughton rather than playing a game!

After watching this it put me in the mood to play other games like this so I had a look at what would be recommended and found one on Game Pass called Kona. Enjoying it so far. It has that 'what the hell is going on' mystery vibe that Rapture has with a little bit of survival thrown in (it has warmth and sanity meters). I would say it's like Rapture crossed with The Long Dark. One worth trying if you like story driven investigative mystery type games.

I saw a gameplay of this game and it's absolutely amazing, loved the soundtrack, the details and the story. I think it's underrated because I remember reading what it was about and it gave me a different idea of gameplay, so I was kind of disappointed thanks to that misunderstanding and I feel that maybe that happened to a lot of people too, the info was misleading, almost false advertisement, so the game just disappeared.

couldn't agree with this anymore mate!! this game perfectly captures a shropshire village. the attention to detail is simply immaculate all the way through the game and that's without even mentioning the gorgeous soundtrack, incredible voice acting, amazing storytelling and the immersiveness this game creates. The feeling of loneliness portrayed is almost eerie but yet comforting at the same time, it gives you a real glimpse of how daunting living like this would be. the game feels even more surreal after the events of the last two years and proves what a good game this is when it comes to evoking niche emotions. scary to think that it's nearly 7 years old now too! definitely goes down as one of my favourite ever games and is so criminally underrated.

Thank you. Nailed it with this review. To call this a "game" in the traditional sense of the word, is simply doing an injustice to art. Its a masterpiece of emotional storytelling. Quintessentially the characters are as English as The Archers, genuine and believable. The soundtrack, by composer Jessica Curry, won a BAFTA if I remember correctly. I am from the west country and live in Devon and the visuals are very reminiscent of where I grew up. Also more than worth mentioning is The Chinese Room's prequel (a sort of companion piece to Rapture) is the poetically beautiful Dear Esther (which has Exeter mentioned in the speaking prose, I thin many of the devs were from Dorset??While Esther is not as multilayered with its narrative as Rapture, it is often a criminally under-looked and under valued immersive experience in itself. Great review, I hope many more discover this breathtaking and unique audio / visual experience!

I wish other companies would put this much detail into their open world games. Th bigger the budget, the less they seem to put into the game. That is not true for all companies but it is starting to become a trend. One thing I would say is that I wish you could drive the vehicles as they look realistic. I also like how the inaccessible buildings have the 'quaratine' sign on them instead of just being inaccessible with no reason.

This seems interesting. Gotta admit when I read the title I thought it was going to be about bioshock and thought to myself, "yeah they probably did" 😂

A splitting of the church of people experiencing the real values of Christ's love light giving receiving and manifesting compared to Christian's who favor lies, misdirection, and greed.

The game was okay I guess, but it really fell flat with the characters, none of them explored to the depth I would have liked to, and the overall plot. It was a puff of smoke to me in the end, and I generally enjoy the genre. Maybe I went with too high expectation into it, but the slow walking speed on long roads might be a feature to some, but to me it was a very mixed bag. The town was amazingly well crafted, but not being able to walk through a tiny bush broke the immersion fairly quickly. And I never understood who WE are supposed to be. Who am I, in this? I just walk into town, get a big tour, and feel like a random disembodied camera that has no presence whatsoever. Some of the pacing was terrible, some was amazing. Sometimes it was just bland nothingness, then suddenly it gets interesting ... this back and forth led me to finishing the game, and experiencing a strange blend of tearing up with sadness and getting bored to tears, inbetween.

if it was on rails, id have enjoyed the story more. but its a walking simulator, and i didnt enjoy the walking one bit. Because keys and joysticks are too small to allow for actual nuance in how you apply pressure to them, youre basically always pressing them down to their max. and an action like that implies a "full throttle" mentality, at least to me, and in fps's its often paid off with my character sprinting. but in this game my character just crawls around at a snail's pace despite me doing the same thing to the joystick that catapults my pilot forward at 200,000mph in titanfall 2. considering arcade games - which at their core are basically all intense action games - set the precedent for how a joystick is usually used to play video games, i feel justified in making this complaint. the movement feels too slowed down, and that bores me more than a lack of action or whatever. if the game wants me to pay attention, either restrict me completely and just make it a glorified movie, or allow me to discover the story at my own pace, determined by how engaged ive gotten. but since i can only slug around, i dont want to explore the world in any way that doesnt push the main story forward because it takes far too long. like, do i seriously need to slowly meander up to every car and living room and tape recorder? cant i have a jog option so i can go around town and find out what happened to all my neighbors with more agency? even if the plot can branch in various ways, this is still a video game. i should have various ways of approaching this situation. even pac man lets you clear the board at your own pace. like, imagine pac man with no ghosts, but you move 10x slower and can only move on one set path through the level.

Yeah it's annoying. I'd try The Vanishing of Ethan Carter instead, it's basically like this except with sprinting and character models.
