I love makita. One thing I've noticed with owing makita Tools and working on the job sight is that makita is mutually respected by all the other fan boys. A Milwaukee or Dewalt guy will be quick to say the other brand is garbage but hand them a makita tool and they will almost always respect it for what it is. It may not be there color but they will like it and use it and always have good things to say about it.

My favorite thing about Makita. You know who actually owns Makita? Makita does. Nearly every other tool brand has sold out to an umbrella corporation. Nothing good ever comes from an umbrella corporation.
Milwuakee is owned by Tectronic Industries. Who the F is that?
Dewalt is owned by Stanley Black and Decker. Not my idea of quality.

    • @dlloyd6300
      @dlloyd6300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +47

@@superiorbeing95 Well it's quite clear that you knowledge of business is lacking. But what would I know with graduating summa cum laude with a major in business management and minor in marketing. First of your "Mr. Makita" is in fact..... Mr. Mosaburo Makita. Secondly, are you under the impression that banks run, or have any influence in, the companies that they loan money to? A bank loaned me money to buy my house, that doesnt mean they have any influence in how I earn my living to pay back the loan. Neither do investors, outside of taking their money elsewhere. Makita is different and better because they do not have a diversified portfolio. If an umbrella corporation that holds 12 different brands lets one brand slip in quality and folds, no big deal. They have 11 other brands to float the company. If Makita makes bad tools and loses its reputation, then guess what, there is no Makita. Makita has no room for making sloppy products, so they ensure that they don't.

Bingo! I've already been burned by Stanley-Black and Decker with the brand shell game where they suddenly zombied Porter Cable cordless and suddenly revamped Black and Decker and Craftsman cordless tools. Luckily, I was just at the beginning of my acquisition of tools. I bought corded tools because more of the work I've had to do - there's power available, and switched to Makita for the cordless bits that make sense fror me. I chose Makita precisely because they have no other brand - so its one skin in the game for them no marketing shell game to hide behind, and secondly, they actually design their own electric motors for their tools - they do not buy third party. AvE tear downs of some of the Makita stuff also showed the quality of manufacture and use of good components - for example the 18V lithium batteries are Samsung with a sophisticated battery management system and the battery capacity ratings are UNDERRATED. The tools are solid.

When you're starting out getting into using cordless tools, research is a must. I don't remember how long I spent researching and feeling out different brands of tools before narrowing it down to Milwaukee, Makita and Hitachi. I ended up going with Milwaukee, mainly because I went to university in Wisconsin and I currently live in Dongguan, which is where TTI produces most of their tools (I have several close friends at TTI). I do have some corded Makita and Hitachi tools and they work great, so the choice I had to make was quite difficult.
I truly believe that if you're considering going in the trades, Milwaukee and Makita are your best choices. I am not a DeWalt fan, never have been (maybe I just don't like yellow and black).

That 6095D 9.6V cordless drill with the torque settings was an awesome seller and converted so many of us! The fact you could adjust the clutch to avoid stripping the heads of screws and how much useful, controllable torque you could get out of a cordless drill with an actual variable speed trigger made all the difference!
You know the cordless tool market wouldn’t be what it is without Makita showing Milwaukee or Black & Decker what was possible.

Upgraded from an older 18v kit. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.

But one thing anyone using the big three can agree on: the competition keeps innovation and pricing good for all of us. In general, you can't really go wrong with Makita, Milwuakee, or DeWalt. Not sure about the out-there colors but my understanding is that Teal=Normal and Made in China, Black=Sub Compact, Red=Normal and Made in Japan. I think the white was their "consumer" stuff, but that came and went real fast going to teal. I've never seen the other colors out in the wild.
I like Makita, they're highly regarded for a good reason. Quality tools, great reliability. The thing that truly sold me on them though is the ergonomics. They seem to really care about how a tool will feel in the hand. This is especially helpful for me with my smaller hands.

  • @joshthetooldude5775

Regarding the Makita presence in home depot, I've talked to the department manager and he said if I he could he'd downsize the Makita display because he sells so much more Milwaukee, DeWalt and even Ridgid. That's gonna vary by region and store but it does go along with the indication that Makita has higher sales to more industrial customers that don't go to home depot very often. ACME tools and Ohio power tool seem to run some pretty good deals on Makita and I suspect they sell quite a lot of it. I've heard pretty much no complaints about Makita for durability. In terms of performance they're really pushing it with their current top impact driver and their 36v circular saw looks like it's really close to the fastest on the market. One thing that you either love or hate is the 2 battery 36v system. On one hand it allows higher powered tools without leaving your battery platform but in pinch you can't use just one battery to make a couple last cuts. The other thing Makita messed up on is many of their tools such as 36v circular saws and a few other 36v tools is they made the space between the batteries and below them too small to future expansion with 21700 cells. They could probably get up to an 8.0ah battery but anything more would be too tall for several tools. I think that's why they are bringing out the 40v system, so that they have a heavy duty battery that can be expanded upon in the future. But the only issue with the 40v is you have to have a 10 cell pack, or you can't get 40v. In order to get more than 4.0ah in the current cell capacity they'd have to do a 20 cell battery which would be even bigger than Milwaukee's, DeWalt's, and Bosch's 12.0 batteries. Now 4.0ah at 40v is still a ton of power and I suspect most users won't have any trouble keeping a charges battery on hand, I wish Makita would look ahead in terms of their battery systems to account for increases in output and capacity. The other side to that is I like that they're not just copying Milwaukee, DeWalt and Bosch by making a 12.0 battery. Not that 12.0 is bad but Makita is clearly going their own way. Great video as always Bear!

I'd used Milwaukee professionally for years and recently I made the conscience effort recently to switch from Milwaukee to Makita and so far I have no regrets. There is just simply some things that Milwaukee either does not make or their offering just looks cheap. For instance when I went looking for a cordless track saw Milwaukee didn't have one on the market. Makita's was not only available but on par (and compatible) with the WAY over-priced Festool.
I do have no gripe about a comment you made regarding Makita's availability as I just find it not to be true....or at least no more or less true than that same statement would be for Big Red. Here in the Mid-West we have three different home improvement type big box stores; Home Depot, Lowes and Menards. While you will not find Makita at Menards or Lowes you also won't find Milwaukee there either.

I own a ton of Makita tools probably close to 50 just in the 18v/36v LXT lineup alone and have had great success with all of them, but they do come out with those weird items like that coffee maker (1 cup per battery) and that robotic vacuum which runs almost 1k brand new (no thanks). Glad you mentioned that angled impact which is a real dog. I recently spoke with a Makita rep and it looks like they're ramping up tools for their brushless 12v lineup to compete with Milwaukee and DeWalt which is kind of annoying since certain tools like the cordless air compressor (tires) and their laser levels are 12v only at this time. Want to know the most common repair we did? Installing new power cords for guys that got caught on the job site by the provincial safety inspector making cuts without guards in place and had their tool disabled by cutting off the plug. Lol True story, I swear.
Also had electricians and plumbers literally pay to build the old 7.2v cordless drills entirely from scratch with new replacement parts because they would fit where others wouldn't in confined space work and they hated using anything else.

As such high-quality it’s indestructible I’m very large drill one time I was over working and I have smoke coming out of the motor I let it cool down and it was fine and that was five years ago still works great

I use an 18V Makita drill driver at work sometimes even a 14.4V Hitachi drill driver.
At home I have an 18V Dewalt Xr drill driver and impact and a 12V Milwaukee fuel impact.
Next powertool will probably be a Makita though.

The Makita XBU02PT1 is the best cordless leaf blower kit on the market. A dual charger, four 5v batteries and the leaf blower for $320. That's what sold me on the Makita 18V line and nearly all my cordless tools Makita now. Great price/performance across the board.

Really cool to get a US perspective!
Here in New Zealand, all the best carpenters use Makita. The likes of Dewalt (especially their mitre and table saws), Milwaukee and Hikoki (i think metabo in the US) are popular with tradies to. But down here everyone knows Japanese engineering just can't be beat. Great price, quality, performance, and they last waaaay longer then they should in our tough conditions. 11/10.
Also in NZ Makita is seen is cool 😁 its dependable and makes you money. I'd say that's pretty cool.

Makita has always made some fine cordless power tools and if comes down it for me; the choice is either Makita or Milwaukee. I have both.
In corded power tools, it's always been Hitachi (though I have a couple of Craftsman Pro power tools). The Hitachi like the Makita, may not be the most powerful, but they are reliable to a fault and at least till recently, priced at a decent level. As much as I like cordless power tools, I find I'm going back to a corded tool more often than not. Corded tools in general have more power, less maintenance issues and don't have to spend insane amounts of money for new batteries. I use the battery powered tools in the field mostly these days.

    • @hardlyb
      @hardlyb 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I've heard Hitachi currently has the most powerful 1/4 cordless impact driver on the market, although I don't know if this is true. When I went lithium I kind of picked at random and bought Makita, but at one point I needed a cordless screwdriver (I was putting up a gazebo with 1000+ machine screws in it), and since there wasn't one using the batteries I already had, I was free to choose and bought a Hitachi. I love that thing, and it made me wonder why I didn't consider the brand when I got new cordless tools... Not that I'm unhappy with the Makita tools I have, I'm just not sure why I didn't put Hitachi on the list I threw a dart at.

    • @rickoshea7690

Yep, I'm the same way. I only have a few cordless tools and they are a mix match of DeWalt, Milwaukee, Porter Cable and Ryobi . I have many more corded tools of different brands that I use regularly more so than the cordless as I find them more reliable and maintenance free even 20 years later. My biggest gripe with cordless tools is that are obsolete within a few years as well as their battery platforms. I'm more inclined to reach for a corded tool today before a cordless one depending on the job.

Makita has the best battery, charger, and motor technology in the business. The longest running, fastest charging. I've been running Makita cordless stuff for 12 yrs now, and I never looked back. Everytime I use somebody elses Dewalt stuff, I just gotta laugh. Dewalt stuff works, but the batteries die quicker and quite frankly they feel like a toy compared to Makita cordless tools. In corded tools, I'm not a brand purist, I actually like a lot of Dewalts corded power tools, Bosch makes some great stuff and so does Milwaukee. But cordless, Makita all the way. I've yet to have a cordless Makita tool fail on me. I have some that are 12 years old and I have some newer brushless stuff, they all just work and work. I'm a 35 yr career carpenter that uses this stuff every single day.

I had 18v DeWalt tools for years back when they we NiCad. They worked well but were heavy and the batteries completely shit the bed after 2 years. Other brands were starting to transition over to lithium but DeWalt was slow to show up the party. I took a chance and bought a Makita lithium impact driver kit and was blown away by it's compactness, light weight, power, fast charging and how long it would hold that charge. Soon I either sold or gave away all my DeWalts and made the full transition to Makita. Now it's been about 15 years and I've amassed quite a collection of tools, chargers and batteries. And what's really amazing is the 15 year old batteries are still good but need a little alteration in order to fit the newer tools. The only issues I've ever had with Makita tools were the chucks on my two hammer drills and to a lesser extent, the hex shank chucks on the impact drivers and of course worn out brushes but that's to be expected. Otherwise I've been beating on these things for years and they just keep on working!

I've been a big Milwaukee fan and used their NiCad cordless tools for a long time personally and professionally. I like their M18 line too but they seemed to run a bit too hot and even smoked a hammer drill while just going through a 10 inch brick retaining wall - not exactly abusing the tool but what killed them for me was how they discontinued all battery support for the older Nicad tools. They had a V18 battery that's $150 now (and no charger for it) so all I'm left with are 3rd party ebay/amazon batteries or having to repack them myself so now I'm starting to move towards Makita for my personal tools and love how they work and feel. I still like Milwuakee and use them but the Makitas seem to pay attention to small detail more and they don't run as hot.

A few years ago I got a Christmas gift of a 12V Makita driver and drill. To say I am impressed with this little lightweight driver and drill is a understatement. I done everything with that driver and drill. They make a really fine tool and the one thing I like is the fact it was very comfortable in my hand compared to the other brands. I have smaller hands and these tools have the ergonomics down to a T for me. I had a buddy complain about the smaller size handle size of the Makita 12V line but for me it is the goldilocks of drivers not to small not to big to be uncomfortable. I also like the fact that the battery can be charge relatively quickly. Great brand and none of the overblown hype of the red brand.

My first cordless drill was a Makita that looked exactly like the one the Bear used in his video that he said he bought at a pawnshop. I Bought it new off one of the tool trucks that visited the lawnmower shop that I worked at. It was 7.2 volt NiCd, reversible single-speed. Came in a plastic case with a charger and a flashlight. I believe it was around 1982 or 83. I used the heck out of that little drill, replacing the battery three times I think, before selling it at a yard sale in about 2010. The batteries would STILL take a charge but didn't last long.

And the bear honestly help me choose Makita because I’ve heard him multiple times to say that you know he was a big Makita fan and Makita this and Makita that, and I have never been more happy with the choice I’ve made with going with Makita!!! 110% recommend!!!!

Milwaukee is becoming popular because of the 'cool' factor, I don't know any professionals with dewalt or bosch, but festool is the expensive pick for tradies. Ryobi is a great cheap alternative (I have had the same drill and impact driver for the last 7 years, which are only now starting to show internal issues which are brushed motors, all-in-all pretty happy with that).

I've used Makita on the job, and they're my preference when I buy for home use. However, as you state, I'm not convinced with their new 40v line. I'd rather see some larger aH batteries in their 18v line. Or a multi-volt design 40v (really same as 36v), so we can use those clunky things on our existing tools. I hope Makita isn't officially driving the nail in the coffin of their home user market. I think most prosumers buy kits pretty regularly, so a battery line change would be of minimal concern. I guess we'll see...

You completely missed the reason for the "stealth" black tools. It's to separate the 18V sub compact (which I own and love) from their 12V line. The sub compact line are as small as the 12V line yet with much more power. The other colors were just failures from their marketing team. Which leads me to what you're calling "the ugly". Makita's greatest downfall is their marketing. Seems like their trying to make up for it. Hopefully, they'll catch up. I'm getting tired of see yellow and red on all these TH-cam channels. I honestly have no problem with DeWalt, but I can't stand Millwaukee. Red tools just aren't engineered as well, but they are marketed very well.

The reason Makita has so many cordless tools is because they have a lot of duplicates of the same tool with slight variations. Not saying they don’t have a great lineup, it’s just not as big as it seems and as far as them not being as popular it’s because they don’t have enough offerings here in the states and when a new tool does come out it take forever to see them in any local stores.
