I disagree. You should give in to FOMO and get a Retroid Pocket 5. Sell your Pocket 4. Gell, just throw it away, it's worthless. Get rid of it. Give it to me instead. For free.
I didn't get the RP4Pro but was seriously considering it. I decided to get the RP5 instead. I don't think someone that already has the RP4pro should get the RP5, if they wanna upgrade they should just get an odin 2.
Do devices get that much more expensive to emulate ALL of the ps2 library? There are all these devices in the $150-$220 range, many of which are marketed for GameCube & PS2, but can’t play the entire library. I want a vertical handheld that can play up through PS2, but it seems like I’ll have to get the horizontal Odin 2 if I want that. I don’t need it, but would like the feeling knowing I could play the entire library, specifically rogue squadron.
Technically, the glass ceiling on PS2 emulation is more the emulator itself, rather then the actual hardware by this point. For context, the PS2 emulator dev abruptly gave up on the project. But in its current state, it can play most things. The barrier to entry for PS2 emulation is way smaller now, considering that most Android phones pack a lot of horsepower these days. :)
These kinds of handhelds reliably playing playstation 2 emulation, is something of a relatively recent thing all considered. AetherSX2 was released on Android end of 2021 think? So that's only around three years ago, and now the chips are starting to catch up in the last year or two (even if development of the emulation software hasn't). In any case, it's exciting to see these cheaper handhelds edging closer to that threshold.
Yup the ceiling is the emulator, not the device at this point. That said, Odin 2 will greatly outperform these dimensity chipsets and also has the benefit of being more ergonomic with a better and bigger screen. Much better for game streaming as well because of the control layout. I’ve gotten way more use out of my xbox series s through streaming
I still love my RP3+ and Miyoo Mini Plus. I won't upgrade until a device with the capabilities of the Odin 2 gets down to 150 euros. Or until there is a PS3/Xbox 360 capable device for around 300. Salutari din Irlanda 🍻
Good call. I’m running an RG35XX (not even plus) for the old school stuff and a RP4 Pro for the slightly newer stuff. Hit me up when we hit a RP7 Pro Mini or something along those lines.

I think if a person wants a future proof device for Wii U and Switch, they should buy a Odin 2. The SD865 has better driver support, but the raw benchmark numbers are too close to the D1100 warrant spending another 200-220 with shipping.
I have many handhelds and the only ones i really use regularly are steam deck oled, switch oled, vita oled, and rg505 which is an oled. I also have the lcd of all these consoles as the oleds came out later or I wouldn't among many other handhelds mostly lcd. I have had oleds since 2015 or 2016 i think. I started with the first Sony Oled, now have multiple and have oled laptop. My eyes aren't the best anymore but let me tell you they absolutely are adjusted to oled blacks and color and it does bother me. Point is it's subjective. To some it does matter a lot and i figure it depends how long youve had oleds and how adjusted to them you are. THe best thing you can do is never get a quality oled and then it won't matter as much. I didn't have much interest in 4 pro and as much as I want an odin 2 for its performance I haven't because its lcd. I've learned that for me if its not oled I just won't grab it when its time to play a game so its a waste of money. The 5 seems like a solid upgrade to the 505 potentially to me and i'm waiting to see how the release is. The rg556 I considered but the sticks are so bad and to me its just not great looking.
The OLED battery savings will probably outweigh the difference in die size and screen size. That being said, the RP4P is not worth upgrading if you already have one.
Can the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and 5 handle the Shadow Hearts series, Onimusha series, DQVIII and Rogue Galaxy at standard(I mean at the same speed and resolution they ran on the PS2) or even super smooth? Those are my standards for PS2 emulation because those are the ones I want to play for PS2 games on this handheld. I know there are others I want to play but I even suspect those are some of the most demanding games.
I have bounced back and forth with different higher end handhelds. I have basically settled on a steam deck (I’m trying to convert away from consoles anyway) and I preordered the Pocket Evo. I had a Odin 2 and I loved it but I really wanted the full sized sticks for local streaming from my PC. I know my steam deck can do that and do it well, but I have a problem lol.
While I agree and I feel like the RP4 does still have a place and should be considered, I feel like the general move to surplus snapdragons is a SMART play. Snapdragons have gotten the most development time, excellent driver support, and MANY high end android devices ALREADY used for emulation have been using snapdragons. For the longest time (even since the days of the GPD-XD) I have been talking to reviewers like ETA, Russ from retro game corps, and Techdweeb saying "When are we going to get an affordable snapdragon device?" Well that time is now and I am ready for it. Many I have talked to have agreed that these processors should be easily sourced as surplus and that is ok. Phone manufacturing is INSANE in terms of volume compared to the Chinese handheld market. It's easier to adopt a 3-5 year old SoC that has been in EVERYTHING and give it a shot as a handheld. I feel like this is a better future. Now if MediaTek and Rockchip and other want to make budget friendly gaming SoCs in the future and make NEW handhelds affordable? Then that will be the day, but until then we get the OLD-but still good SoCs.
I was actually more interested with the RP Mini, thinking it would be a good complement to my Odin 2 Pro. However, it's too expensive for what I intend to use it for, and I've heard that RG40XX H's D-pad wasn't great. Since I wanted one that's dedicated to emulating Gen 4 below, I went for the RG35XX SP. But if the RP Mini goes on sale somewhere down the line, I'd most likely buy it.
Just got the RP4 Pro after doing some research. Runs great! Buttons are great! Worth selling the old PSP I don’t use anymore. A great PSP substitute, but slightly large in size but it is comparable to a big smartphone. I always got interested in RP5 while thinking about the RP4 Pro but I found out that D1100 is slightly better than the SD865. It is worth getting the 4 Pro and worth the 9 month wait after the… launch unit failures.
Seeing as I'm not going out that much, I settled on the second-hand RP4(standard) and handgrip. When I need to play a more demanding emulation, I'd just moonlight stream from my pc. This is enough for my usage; no need for more powerful devices.
I was waiting for a flip version of rp4, or rp5, but after 5 was announced, you showed us some awesome deals on rp4pro on Aliexpress and I had to buy it! Was trying to decide about pre-ordering rp5, but after tax and shipping it would have cost me like $250 (and for what an oled screen?)and who knows when we would get it, but because of you Vlad I got a blue rp4pro for $165! And I am loving the heck out of it.
Still proudly rocking an RP3+. For me, it's too soon to upgrade. Also, we are seeing new hardware but, where are the emulators? Like a new PS2 Android emulator would be gold....
Was really confused when I saw this in my notifications because I vividly remember you being absolutely ENRAGED about the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro before, lol.
Yup, you're absolutely right. When it was announced, I really expected the SOC to underperform in PS2. It still does in some games, but it runs the Legacy of Kain series properly, so I'm happy. 😄
I now have an odin 2 pro, and a steamdeck, and that's my endgame for higher end emulation, like ps2 and the big N recent systems (wink wink). From that downwards, and I have a mix of 2.8 and 3.5 devices, that I rotate. I happy with those, and I have no interest in the retroid pocket family atm. I had a pocket 3 plus, and it was great, but the odin is way better in terms of performance (and bigger, but we can't win all the time :D ).
Those are cool but not really portable there to big for that those are more like only at home game devices u can't play those on the bus or a train in my opion way to big for that so retroids anbernics miyyoos those are all better devices for the portable gaming experience. I've also seen many people show that u can play hundreds of ps2 games and GameCube games one guy literally went down the rabbit hole showing tons of them. My point is the steam and odin is more home use for pc and things that require higher graphics etc for everything else the handhelds they have cover it. So all are good but for different reasons. The size of odin and steam is why the others flourish a lot not to mention its pricey.
@@daranget.v7432 I agree, I like Retroid for the price and size/portability. Then you get people like dnamobilegaming who despises RP5 and keeps saying just get an odin bro. I like the 200ish price and the size.

It's really just the battery that has me hesitant. How does the battery life compare between the two devices in your experience?
There's no choice for me. I just bought RP4P.... can't use the 5 because it has a OLED screen and my old eyes are sensitive to PWM. I'm upgrading from the rg353p to the RP5. I was always concerned that for 4:3 content, the RP4P's screen would display at 3.8, and that just didn't seem like a big enough leap in size. Same reason I went for the 5 instead of the RP Mini.
@@christophergarcia6064 how big is 4:3 content going to be on the rp5? I'll probably have to get the 5 since DS and PSP will be rough on the eyes on a 3.7. But I love mini handhelds.... Fudge!
The RP5 will display 4:3 content at just under 4.5in (like 4.48). PSP will be much better on the 5, and DS too, as you can still keep the screen a very good size while seeing both screens at once.
I have a rp4 pro, and I like the design way more than rp5, but I still buy a rp5, cause streaming decode time in 865 is WAY LESS than any device else, even less than 8gen2, so this is a must buy for me.
865 decode time is about 2-4ms, while 8gen2 is 7-9ms. Of course wifi connection(stability) will not better than odin2, but decode time is more impactful in low latency streaming.
Tbh retroid pocket 4 pro seems like the best budget handheld and the golds standard. I also like the design way more. Just need a new one that is similar but with better specs, maybe 6 because 5 ain't that.
Agreed, the SOC is not enough on the RP5. If you're getting into the hobby just now, the RP5 would still not be my recommendation for a new handheld. The Anbernic RG40XXV or RG MotherFlipper or the Miyoo Mini or even the RG Cube - absolutely but it does depend on preference and use case but those would need my pick. As discussed on Discord, I'm skipping this generation of Retroid.
You bring up a lot of great points, which is why I have been hesitant on buying these glorified Android phones. I buy glorified Linux handhelds instead.
odin 2 base model at 299 is better purchase, 6 inches display, 8000mah, can play nearly all of ps2 with 2 or 3 x display and can also emulate nintendo switch wow :)
Not for me. I already have nintendo switch so getting Odin 2 for switch is an obvious no. Playing psp on the rp4pro is amazing, wouldn’t be the same on Odin 2. I like Odin, but the only thing it’s offering me is bigger screen which idc about since it makes the device heavier and less easy to carry around.
Unless you're also in taking it with you on the go, too. The Odin doesn't fit in a pocket. Granted, the Odin 2 Mini, RP4P and RP5 are really pushing pocketability too...
I covered this at the end of this video. :) When it was initially announced, I thought it would play way less things because of the SOC. Turns out it handled emulation better than I expected.
I love your videos, but the crt filter was making the rp look like it was 3d printed on my tv 😅 Maybe only use it for when you are talking, so we can see the device in all its glory! Much love and keep up the entertaining content!
RP5 is a significant upgrade for anyone who plans on using winlator and exagear, both in terms of qualcomm compatibility and brute performance. Street fighter 4 is laggy on the rp4pro, will be perfect on the RP5. If RP5's 865 works as well as most sd865 phones, then there's a ton of windows games that will work great on RP5. Street fighter 4 alone is enough to sell me on the upgrade. Winlator is awesome on android phones, and its only getting better. Bigger oled screen, and linux development are also meaningful upgrades.
@@VladNerd Just type "winlator sd 865" on youtube search. If that's the performance we can expect from RP5, its something to look forward to. And it'll only get better as winlator gets better.
Performance-wise, I don't expect to be too much of a difference. What I'll (personally) keep a close eye on is the difference in battery life compared to the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. Both have the same battery capacity, but they have different transistor node sizes (in their respective SOCs) and different screens. I think that's super important for these types of handhelds. :)
@Watamel0n lmao I saw that, I think it's mostly marketing nonsense. Although that slide is for the OLED display specifically, and technically compared to "standard" (lcd) displays it's more efficient

I have much sympathy for your channel, vlad. But about the RP4 pro, you compare its ergonomics to a device not in your hand? If the D1100 on the paper is similar to the snapdragon 865, even topping it in some benchmarks, for emulation the SD 865 is superior both in performance and for its graphic drivers that are supported by the community. The screen alone makes the RP5 the superior device in my book, notably if you play outside or in a well lit environment. Now about the frontend you suggest. It's a paid app, unfinished, far far below the quality of a free frontend like daijisho. I don't understand this advice. Ok it's fast... And empty. 😅
My counterpoint is that life is short and there's lots of great new games out there. Spending the bulk of your time playing retro games that you've already played before instead of having new experiences could to some, be considered a wasted life
What about playing all those games from your youth that you didn't get to play? Many of the older games are better than the modern games (in some people's opinions).

The RP5 will display 4:3 content at just under 4.5in (like 4.48). PSP will be much better on the 5, and DS too, as you can still keep the screen a very good size while seeing both screens at once.
@@christophergarcia6064 sweet
On the other hand... an Anbernic RGARC with a T820..... umh.....

I have a rp4 pro, and I like the design way more than rp5, but I still buy a rp5, cause streaming decode time in 865 is WAY LESS than any device else, even less than 8gen2, so this is a must buy for me.
Where's the numbers??? This won't have a better wifi chip than a o2
865 decode time is about 2-4ms, while 8gen2 is 7-9ms.
Of course wifi connection(stability) will not better than odin2, but decode time is more impactful in low latency streaming.
I noticed my odin 2 seemed to have more streaming lag than my steam deck... Makes sense why
Tbh retroid pocket 4 pro seems like the best budget handheld and the golds standard. I also like the design way more. Just need a new one that is similar but with better specs, maybe 6 because 5 ain't that.
Its definitely a great console but I am spoilt. by the 556 I want that RP5 massive OLED screen to watch movies on and game :D
One word. AMOLED.
Someone send this man an odin 2 mini to review
Heck yeah!
does xbox work ?
You just killed my fomo with facts and logic. Ok that’s a lie I still preordered a 5 but if the 4 pro price drops it’s a steal for sure.
you've raised my hopes and then dashed them quite masterfully. Bravo! 😅
The price of the 4 and 4 Pro DID drop, just a few days after preorders started. They have been $135 and $185 for a while now.
I wish they become cheaper here with the 5 coming out.
They did. It's $135 and $185 for the 4 and 4 Pro. It has been like this since almost right after the 5 went on sale
But Vlad i already bought the rp5 😅 i'm a fomo kind of gal. ❤
It's ok. Do whatever brings you that happiness, nerdette. :)
odin 2 base model at 299 is better purchase, 6 inches display, 8000mah, can play nearly all of ps2 with 2 or 3 x display and can also emulate nintendo switch wow :)
I think it depends on each country. There's no way I can get that good deal in my country because of added up tax after tax and shipping fee.
Odin 2 has the D-Pad lower. I want to play older games with the D-Pad at the top, that's why the Retroid Pocket 5 looks perfect for me.
Unless you're also in taking it with you on the go, too. The Odin doesn't fit in a pocket. Granted, the Odin 2 Mini, RP4P and RP5 are really pushing pocketability too...
Liked firstly because of size reference cat
Previosly video you said rp 4 scram?
I covered this at the end of this video. :)
When it was initially announced, I thought it would play way less things because of the SOC. Turns out it handled emulation better than I expected.
how the ghosting
I love your videos, but the crt filter was making the rp look like it was 3d printed on my tv 😅
Maybe only use it for when you are talking, so we can see the device in all its glory!
Much love and keep up the entertaining content!
I'll take the feedback into account. Thanks. :)
It's like the retroid pocket 3 again not much of an upgrade.
This video is funny i enjoyed it
RP5 is a significant upgrade for anyone who plans on using winlator and exagear, both in terms of qualcomm compatibility and brute performance.
I never actually tried Winlator. You just made me super curious about it. I think I might dive in this rabbit hole and see where it takes me. 😄
@@VladNerd Just type "winlator sd 865" on youtube search. If that's the performance we can expect from RP5, its something to look forward to. And it'll only get better as winlator gets better.
@@VladNerd Do it my King of the nerds! ❤
I can't wait for it to come out and for some people to eat their words when it turns out that the RP5 DOES perform better than the RP4.
@VladNerd I agree, it will be interesting! The OLED screen might help with the battery life, but it's also a lot larger so it's uncertain...
Retroid has a graph on their product page, which shows, that the rp5 has lower power consumption, than "standard" (products). Whatever that means.
@Watamel0n lmao I saw that, I think it's mostly marketing nonsense. Although that slide is for the OLED display specifically, and technically compared to "standard" (lcd) displays it's more efficient
ALL TRUTH.
❤❤❤
Many of the older games are better than the modern games (in some people's opinions).
typical dillema buy retroid pocket 5 or wait for pro version
I think Retroid said they are doing away with releasing Pro versions
